It's very useful if you're into hydroponics to keep a stable pH as well. Worth it.
I had to buy the Fruit Roll sheets separately for my dehydrator, but that's how you keep it from falling through the openings. :-)

the stove top light i have, it might only be a 50 or 100w bulb, but it's enough to raise the temp of my fermentation jars by 5F just sitting on the stove top.
