Hmm, played around for a few min in PCpartpicker and $600-700 would do pretty well.

EDIT: Put in a better link with the new Ryzen 2400g; due to ridiculous graphics card prices atm, it's probably better to use the integrated for now (which isn't too awful) and it can always fit an actual card as needed.

This certainly would work but 256 GB may not be enough storage for people, mandating another drive of some kind. It might be possible to just get a regular spin drive, but in 2018 I think SSDs are a good idea even for non-gaming computers; being able to load Windows and games faster saves a lot of time.

The video card is kinda eh; it's in between minimum and recommended requirements but it's cheap and a whole lot better than doing integrated.

Fun Fact: The current generation of Intel has more cores than their older counterparts thanks to AMD giving them a swift kick in places. I3 used to be dual core, now it's quad core. I5 used to be quad core, now it's 6 core. So there's reason enough to equate old I5s with the new I3s-- Do not just see I5 and assume it must be better!

Truly minimal,:

This prebuild at $599 would be good too. Probably a better choice at this price! (but dunno about quality stuff inside) https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-IdeaCentre-GeForce-Windows-90H2000DUS/dp/B06X1F8KYH/ref=sr_1_8?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1520874649&sr=1-8&keywords=computer&refinements=p_n_graphics_type_browse-bin%3A14292273011

If you have someone of getting an OS for cheap, that'd be good too.

Also, I'd advise against going too cheap with prebuilts as oftentimes they come with crappy power supplies. They might literally explode on you, and I will say this from experience with a cheap Dell.

Edit: Come to think about it someone I know has a fairly budget PC (old I3 with an old graphics card). I should find an excuse to do "research", errr... screw it, I'll just tell them I'm going to play Civ.

You're absolutely right in that competition undoubtedly drives innovation. That is one factor that affects the pace of progress. However, we shouldn't discount the creative potential of benevolent monarchs simply because the idea of totalitarianism doesn't sit well with modern democratic westerners.

History has been filled with terrible dictators, of course, but there are also a number of notable "philosopher kings" (as described by Plato), who achieved great feats as a result of having absolute control over vast resources and populations. Sejong the Great, Hadrian Augustus, and Süleyman the Magnificent all come to mind.

EDIT: What I mean to say is that in the right hands, a vast and powerful empire can push the boundaries of science, art, architecture, human rights, etc much further than any individual can through their personal achievements. Unfortunately history is mostly defined by conquerors. Napoleon and Hitler were most certainly NOT philosopher kings, but perhaps one would have succeeded them.... Or perhaps not and we would all be living under an oppressive authoritarian rule. There's no way to tell.

> Then again, one of the most important things in advancing science in Europe was really good Venetian glass...

Ah yes! I too, have read "How We Got to Now".

Haha thanks for the gold!

How to get into exploring Greek Mythology:

  • You need a good book for Referencing, I suggest "The Greek Myths" by Robert Graves.
  • Architecture was almost as important to Greek mythos as philosophy. Check out the temples, arenas, and statues they created.
  • One thing that always baffles me though is the worship of Artemis. While she's an insanely interesting Goddess, she represented some extremely contrasting morals to Greek culture (chastity being the biggest one.) Greeks absolutely loved their orgies, yet they constructed an elaborate and gorgeous temple to a virgin goddess.
  • Zeus is merely the leader of Olympus, not the godhead of Hellenistic faith. The creators of the universe are much more complex in Greek mythos than, "The god of thunder made shit."

Amazon currently has a sale for Civ III Complete + Civ IV Complete + Civ V complete, all for $17.

Pretty certain III&V have Steam codes, while IV might have a redeemable CD code (it's unclear.)

Honestly I'd just go with that, though really, IV Complete on its own is something like $5, right? It's definitely a good game, especially thanks to all the huge mods available.

u/johnnythornton · 1 pointr/civ

Start with Civ V with all expansions. I was a diehard RTS guy until a friend of mine got me drunk enough to experiment with civ. My life hasn't been the same since.

I haven't played Civ 4 but Civ V is awesome. I don't know why you wouldn't start with the most recent game, I mean it got rave reviews, GOTY awards, sold millions of copies, etc. etc.

http://www.amazon.com/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-Complete-Edition/dp/B00I4C2EKA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1405389397&sr=8-3&keywords=civ+v

25 bucks for .... at a minimum hundreds of hours of entertainment. I've probably put around 600 hours into civ at this point, and enjoyed every second of it.

u/memoryspaceglitch · 2 pointsr/civ

Come on, it's not that bad to live in Sweden. Try amazon.co.uk if you want the boxed version, they're usually quite good priced and ships for free over £25 :) I hope that goes for Civ BE as well :)

u/Alathas · 3 pointsr/civ

Civ V was my first strategy game, and I will say it probably has the best tutorial in any strategy game I've found, it tells you what you're meant to be doing as you play, so playing the game should be fine for your first time. Perhaps play Rome as their bonuses are solid, yet dull, in that they don't change the way you play particularly, so it's a good civilization to start with as there aren't any extra civ-specific things to worry about on top of the game. I would suggest also buying Brave New World if it's on sale (at the moment, you can get everything that isn't civ: BE at crazy low price: http://amzn.to/1Emjd4Q). BNW makes Civ V go from a merely decent-good game to an excellent game. That said, you might want to try playing Civ V without BNW first, so you don't get overwhelmed by all the new mechanics.

u/disco_biscuit · 2 pointsr/civ

Can anyone help me out here? I didn't see a link on the main landing page, but I found these two:

BNW - Amazon - $14.99

G&K - Amazon - $14.99

I just bought vanilla during the last Steam sale (this game is amazing BTW)... what's the difference between these two expansion DLC's? Are there others? Is one better than the other? Do they both add different content, should I buy both?

u/SovietShark · 2 pointsr/civ

Yes, but it looks like you can activate the disk's CD key on steam

I'm pretty sure it's what I did but I think I bought the CD and activated it on steam for vanilla Civ 5 before buying complete edition years later, so I'm not sure if it's different..

This is on amazon and says $12.50 for PC download

u/drakeonaplane · 1 pointr/civ

Gold edition is on sale. It will give you a code that you put into steam, and you get the base game and all dlc, including g&k. I highly recommend g&k since the religion mechanic and new civs make the game far more interesting. This is probably the best sale you'll find on it. If you already have the base game, the code will just add all dlc and g&k, which is still worth it IMO.

u/Phoolis · 1 pointr/civ

Personally I'd just get it whichever way is cheapest in the long run. If there's a nice save on the bundle (like the Gold edition which has G&K) I'd get that and worry about BNW later. The Gold edition includes a bunch of previously released Civilizations, which really freshen up the game.

As complete beginner to the whole series, I had a blast with just the vanilla game at start. That being said, the two expansions really tweak an already good game into perfection. I wouldn't be able to switch back to vanilla after playing with them both.

EDIT: For example the base game is 20 dollars on amazon right now. You can wait for a sale on Steam for the Gold edition upgrade, which will be around 2-5 dollars, and get BNW when it's on sale etc.

u/starkfield · 3 pointsr/civ

Oh definitely start at Prince. I had very little experience with Civ (see previous comment) or really any similar games outside of Pharoah/Caesar and starting at Prince made it a lot more fun/challenging to start. Civ is REALLY boring if you start winning and stay winning (after like the first game...the first total domination game is pretty satisfying). And yes, wait for the epic sale! I actually got this for $20 recently (even though I already had most of IV and base V) http://www.amazon.com/Firaxis-Complete-Pack-Online-Game/dp/B00CPBZDPE which had IV and V complete and XCOM as well...great deal if you didn't have any of them. Unfortunately it's over, but keep an eye out on other sites besides Steam for good deals!

This bundle on Amazon is 20 bucks and includes the Civ 5 Gold Edition which covers all content currently available for the game (G&K, all DLC Civs, maps, etc.) as well as Civ IV and XCOM which are fantastic games. Brave New World is currently 27 bucks to preorder the downloadable version.

u/mattspire · 155 pointsr/civ

Thanks! Well, I didn't want to come across as spammy. I really had no idea about this until this morning and am honestly just surprised and happy to be a very small part of something enjoyed by so many.

Here's my book: https://www.amazon.com/Caligatha-Realm-1-Matt-Spire/dp/0692506098

It's a very tough book to summarize, but it examines what happens when humans have the means (nanotechnology, virtual reality, gene therapy, AI) to fulfill their wildest wishes or ease their deepest sorrows, and what the consequences may be. A scientist loses his wife and child, and tries to bring them back, inadvertently opening a sort of Pandora's Box of consequences.

u/Jewtheist · 2 pointsr/civ

Salt is probably the most important of the luxury resources throughout history, so it's very accurate that it's the best one. There's an interesting read on it.

u/Kremecakes · 1 pointr/civ

You can wait for the winter sale, otherwise the best I can find is amazon for $22.84, then buy something for around $2.16 to get free shipping.

u/supadoodles · 3 pointsr/civ

Generally, whenever I commit to a game series, I do it the right way. Like you, I'll be waiting until it (hopefully) becomes a Daily Deal..

If the GOTY edition becomes a Daily Deal, I'll definitely get it. There's a lot of extra content, and I think you'd probably feel like you're missing out if you didn't get them all. It doesn't seem like that much extra money anyhow.

$20 for GOTY and Civ IV on Amazon

u/KJAZZ · 7 pointsr/civ

You can spend twenty bucks on Amazon and get both Civ 4 complete, Civ 5 GOTY, and The Stronghold Collection - this is probably the most bang for your buck at the minute.

Unfortunately does not include G&K though.

Alternatively, you could spend $12 for Civ 4 Complete and normal (not GOTY) Civ 5, found here.

Gods and Kings is 25% off at Greenmangaming, and if you "buy" their free game today, you'll get a coupon for 20% off anything until the end of July, so you could pick up Gods and Kings for $18 even...

The choices are yours, and yours alone! Good luck.

u/SenatorVreenak · 2 pointsr/civ

Even with the Summer Sale, Steam is no where near with best deal right now.

Much better deal for the GOTY
US$20 for Civ 5 GOTY (All DLC) & Civ 4 (everything) & Stronghold series

Better deal for G&K
US$22.50 for G&K

Note: all of the above games come with steam activation codes.

u/gensolo · 2 pointsr/civ

You can get V GOTY plus IV Complete as well as the Stronghold collection on Amazon for 19.99: http://www.amazon.com/2K-Games-40897rategy-Pack3-Strategy/dp/B006OF1BCG/ref=pd_cp_vg_0

IV and Stronghold activate on Steam as well as V.

u/vizualb · 3 pointsr/civ

It's definitely still a complete game and one you can have a lot fun with. It's sort of a case where you don't know what you're missing. Many people played hundreds of hours of vanilla prior to the release of Gods and Kings two years later.

My advice would be to refund your purchase in Steam if you haven't played 2 hours yet, then purchase a code here for the complete edition for $10.

u/lessmiserables · 5 pointsr/civ

Well...OK, maybe I worded that poorly.

Food preservation was much more important for military applications than it was for everyday life. I.e., salt allowed provisions to last significantly longer, which meant that military excursions could last longer and go further (and cheaper!). Whereas from a civilian day-to-day standpoint its effects were significant but relatively smaller.

There's a reason in Rise of Nations Salt reduced the cost of infantry units.

I recommend this book: Salt: A World History.

> Why did you suggest Zenpad ? It is an android tab, right ?

Yep, it's arguably the best 8" tablet right now (trades blows with the Mi Pad 2) and the base model can be had for very cheap (I've seen it as low as $160)

> My budget is quite low, and only Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 (windows version) seems to be in budget. I think I'll go with it

It's a nice device (USB Type-C and everything). Can be a bit hard to get though.

It also has some odd features missing (like GPS, microSD, and front facing speakers) and can be a bit small (8" is pretty small for a tablet. It's more of a reading device, and less of a gaming device).

If you're willing to lug around a keyboard, there are some cheap 10-12" devices that flip, or even some cheap devices that detach.

The ASUS Transformer Book T100HA in the $299 MSRP config has:

  • A fully detachable 10" IPS tablet (only 1280x800 though)
  • 64 GB of storage
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • Windows 10
  • Intel x5-Z8500
  • dual-band wifi
  • decent camera (nothing crazy though)
  • USB Type-C
  • USB Type-A port
  • MicroUSB
  • micro HDMI
  • microSD
  • microphone/headphone jack

PCMag, Trusted Reviews, and Notebookcheck all liked it.

There are higher end models with 1920x1080+ displays for a bit extra.

GE amazon EUR49,95 = £39.82

Actually you can straight up buy the "complete edition" on amazon right now for $30.
So for 30 you can get all dlc (G&K+BNW+all the little dlcs) and have an extra copy of Civ.

EDIT: Here is the link

u/Carpe_deis · 6 pointsr/civ

You are so right! Modern IRL civs don't just ban random luxury goods (kinder eggs, pot, heroin, horse meat) that gameplay feature is totally unrealistic.

Salt and citrus, so unimportant in the modern world, film and luxury jewelry are way more important.

Film industry: 38 billion in global sales, 2016

Jewelry: 70 billion in global sales, 2016

Citrus: 100 billion in global sales, 2015

Salt: 21 billion in global value, 2013. This is just for NaCl, MgSO4 or magnesium sulphate is another 7 billion (in 2015) and there are a number of other "salts" out there that "salt" in civ undoubtedly represents, since there are no sodium bisulphate, potassium dichromate, or calcium chloride luxury resources represented, and are these key pieces of historic and modern food and chemical production. If anything salts are far more important in a modernized industrial world than in a pre industrial world.

If anything salt should be a strategic luxury, required for most classical through modern era units.

For further reading, check out market data reports (if you can find ones not behind a steep paywall) and this book: https://www.amazon.com/Salt-World-History-Mark-Kurlansky/dp/0142001619
