In all fairness, you don't need anything but pen and paper to write. When you're ready to start drawing, don't make a huge investment if you've never done it before. Good tools will not make up for lack of skill and/or experience. You also don't want to spend a lot on something that won't match your own workflow style.

That being said, if you're looking for a self contained tablet, your options are slim, but I just picked this up and it's super nice for the $200 price. It's a full blown laptop/android tablet hybrid.

Stylus is an extra $20 and it's pretty responsive. I haven't gotten the keyboard yet.

If you just need a drawing tablet for an existing computer, look into Wacom products.

If you want to get into Modern Thor I highly recommend Thor: God of Thunder. It has some amazing arcs and pretty much all of it is great.

Rune King Thor I think came from Avengers: Disassembled issue #80 - #85.

Absolutely read Y The Last Man by Brian K Vaughan at some point in your life! It's 10 volumes. One of the best stories I've ever read, which I binge-read in a weekend the first time. Post-apocalyptic, scary & humorous too. Really, just everything BKV writes. (Edit: I should clarify. Only scary in a chaotic society/socially relevant way, it's not horror.)

Sandman by Neil Gaiman is probably the closest other series to Fables. Very rich in mythology & folklore.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore is very similar in nature, being about literary characters. Just forget the craptacular movie ever existed. The book is much better.

The Maxx by Sam Keith is one of the best 90s books IMO. Trippy, weird, and whimsical. A psuedo-superhero story that explores mental illness & abuse.

Edit2: Oops, how could I forget Bone by Jeff Smith which at 1,300+ pages is certainly epic -- a fun, fantastical adventure for all ages. And couple that with the fact you can often find the One Volume edition used for under $20, it's an amazing value. Do note the paper is very, very thin though, so artwork bleeds through. If that's a deal-breaker, try the more expensive single volumes.

Hey,
So I use the following tablet for inking and coloring, and it's super reliable and on the cheaper end. Really good for just starting out

Software, you can start off with whatever the latest Manga Studio version is (I think 5 right now?) and then move on to Photoshop if you got the money and really enjoy the digital artform.

later on you can move up to Wacom tablet or Cintiq, and such.
You can easily do it all under $100-$150 for starting.

You should read Preacher! It is one of the most intense, twisted, and hilarious comic series you will ever read. The TV show is also pretty good.

Y: The Last Man. I know /u/Gurloes already mentioned it but I just need to second it. It is absolutely one of my all time favorite series ever put out.

Check out the Fantastic Four series by Mark Waid. He recaps the origin at the beginning, it's a great place to start.

While I'm not even remotely knowledgeable of Doom, I highly recommend Doctor Voodoo vol1 for Doom lovers. He plays an extremely key role due to his disdain for Doctor Voodoo becoming the Sorcerer Supreme.

[Spoilers](#spoiler "Doom basically saves the world by being prepared in ways Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo weren't. He, arguably, might have actually been a better choice for Sorcerer Supreme after all.")

So for spider man I would suggest the Bendis run. I think its a very solid modern version of the character and would be an interesting follow up to the classics.

Regarding venom, I'd also like some suggestions, since all I really know is Venom Space Knight and that was not for me.

Spider-Man: Birth of Venom - Collects the first few stories with the black costume and Venom.

If you want to read Venom as a hero then try Venom by Rick Remender: The Complete Collection Volume 1 and Volume 2

Journey into Mystery by Kieron Gillen (Gillen wrote stuff that she likes) or Grayson by Tim Seeley and Tom King (Already one of the best Nightwing series ever)

There is a solo series that is just called Psylocke that was enjoyable
