If you haven't gotten to try it yet, the newest version has starter set for about $12.

Comes with an abridged rulebook (the set is designed for characters up to level 5, so it doesn't give you any spells they wouldn't have access to, or monsters that they wouldn't be able to face), a pre-written adventure, a set of dice, and some pre-made characters (Obviously, you're free to make your own instead though)

I highly recommend it for anyone who's interested in getting started with tabletop RPGs. The newest version of D&D is designed to be very beginner friendly. This set lasted my group almost a full year, playing about twice a month for about 3 hours a session, so you'll definitely get $12 of enjoyment out of it if you can get an eager group together.

To see Dan Harmon respond so quickly, so consistently whenever the show evokes a strong response from the audience, I really appreciate and enjoy it. I'd love to see it all printed in a book as a companion piece, or if the show makes it through and at the end there is a special complete series collection, incorporate it in there. I don't know if they'd do something special, I wouldn't mind them mimicking http://www.amazon.com/Freaks-Geeks-Complete-Linda-Cardellini/dp/B001B73PTO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320522571&sr=8-2.

Agreed. Not only that but the translation also does a pretty good job of getting across most of the jokes, so it's a pretty valiant effort.

And for anyone who's watched Community too many times and is looking to study/brush up on their French, I definitely recommend getting the DVDs from Amazon France. They're a bit more expensive but you get the French dub plus French subtitles, so they're a great way to replace boring textbooks :p

I enjoyed reading your introspective perspective and how you relate to Abed. I relate to all the characters, but I associate most with Abed because of my need to obsessively catalog things and worry over minute details. He also has an affinity to pop culture that I find kindred to my own.

I, like you, also see no point to diagnosing AS. It feels like pseduo-science, and as you say there's no benefit to diagnosing it. I applaud you, however, for seeing a therapist. I am against those who dissuade you from therapy because they rely on stereotypes rather than fact. Therapists are just like any other profession, and I'm glad you found one that is helping you. Here are my opinions on a couple of things I noticed:

> But people also baffle and exhaust me, and I don’t trust most of them. They generalize and assume based on very limited data sets. They touch me. From behind. In crowds. They ignore the words I have so carefully arranged to say exactly what I want them to say and project their own insecurities and needs and prejudices. They treat me like an extension of them; they subsume who I am and what I say into whatever role they want or need me to fill and then punish me when I fail to follow a script I can’t see.

I definitely see you as carrying many of the properties of an introvert, especially when you say people exhaust you. An introvert thrives on being alone and has to recharge after social situations. An introvert doesn't hate people and isn't anti-social, but sees social interaction as a chore at times. You say you're self-employed and content with that. I would check out /r/introvert just in case you'd like more on this.

You also limit yourself by saying "I am not ever going to be an elite athlete or the CEO of a fortune-500 company." I read the book, "Quiet" by Susan Cain, and it is truly empowering to know how many introverts are in high ranking positions. I don't consider myself an introvert but there are parts of the book that I strongly associated with, like how quiet leadership is not an oxymoron. I recommend reading that if this jives with how you feel.

Sony already has a streaming service. It's called Crackle. It's also not doing that hot. There's also (technically) Playstation Vue (which is more for live TV then streaming). They don't really have any plans to combine the two, and neither are doing that great.

What Sony is trying to do is to sell the Streaming Right to Community to someone who is doing hot, much like they did with the rights to Seinfeld. The numbers being talked about for other sales are huge, so Sony is probably hoping for another large payday with the sale.

As for the movie: a bit more complicated. Theoretically yes, depending on what it sells for and who gets it and if Dan wants to make it (last I heard most everyone wants to be involved, it's business stuff that's complicating the matter). But then there's also the issue of who has the rights to the movie (I don't know if anyone has even talked about that, which can get complicated) and who will produce it (would it be the future platform or would it be Sony? Would they split the costs? Remember Sony just got done with Disney and Spiderman on a rights issue so they may be a little gun-shy on that question).

TL:DR buy the Blu Ray or DVD

I totally see how it could be used to break down boundaries. It's like how, if your brother becomes an A-list TV actor, he's still your brother who happens to be a celebrity. He never becomes a celebrity who happens to have been your brother for fifteen years. Sites like Reddit give us an opportunity to see everybody like a member of big, adopted family (just like the study group).

The thing is, we know our family are ordinary people we can talk to because we've seen them from all sides. To trigger that revolution, you'd need to introduce a new culture among the upper/creative class, where it's okay to be transparent about yourself. Sites like Reddit could enable that culture, but peoples' inclination to do so would need to be there, regardless, for the site to work. Before Instagram, people were already showing everybody at the table what their food looked like. Until they start physically zapping our brains, computers alone are never going to change people's behavior.

Letting your insecurities and flaws be part of your public persona, letting strangers see you as a fully fleshed out person with depth... that's a pretty terrifying thing. It involves spending several horrifying nights doing nothing but unrelentingly hitting yourself with your own big fuck-ups. Most people are afraid of showing that stuff to one other person, even when they've known and trusted them for years. Showing it to everybody, including lots of people who would have liked you if they hadn't known small parts of the worst things you've disclosed - especially in a field like mass media, where the most adoration-dependant personalities gravitate - is... not an attractive prospect.

Without that culture, our idols seem like perfect points of light and positivity, which is why people feel starstruck if one of them should stoop so low as to say something to them. Closure fills in the gaps that when they're away from us, they're doing what they do in front of us, rather than considering the idea that they're sitting on a bed with their face in their hands wondering if anything about their personality is their own.

\
I'm using "closure" in the Understanding Comics sense, which, Dan, I'm assuming you've read based on my third-hand understanding that you've read the biggest books on the structure of media you work in, and knowing that you wrote La Cosa Nostroid. For anybody who hasn't, you really should, even if you've never read comic book in your life and never intend to.

There are a bunch of free D&D clones built on the fact that Wizards of the Coasts released the third edition of the game under the 'Open Gaming License'.

A well-written, simple and cheap (the PDF is free or you can get a paperback for about $5 from Amazon) one of these is Basic Fantasy RPG. It's written with those new to the concept of pen-and-paper RPGs in mind.

Its simplicity means it'll be a bit closer to the way they play in the episodes, whereas the current edition official D&D can be quite rules-intensive. Their website also has a bunch of free supplementary materials (extra races, classes, and even adventures for the Dungeon Mater to run if they don't want to write their own).

It's tough to capture, but I think this one is clearer - three different ones, top I pumped up the blacks in the image, bottom I pumped up the contrast and toned down the brightness, middle is a direct capture from VLC playing the DVD itself.

If you watch it frame by frame, it is easier to read, as the light plays across the gun, the EL becomes blurrier in the shots where the TIGRE is easier to see, the shot I grabbed was about the best full shot of the name plate on the marker.

By the way it's a Tippmann TPX Pistol and the portion showing "EL TIGRE" is where the brand name normally is found, so that is most likely the reasoning for replacing the nameplate.

Dan Harmon, creator of Community, is a student of Joseph Campbell and the use of the hero's journey in storytelling. Dan wrote about Story Structure on the channel101 forums years ago. The article's images seem to be missing, and he was writing to inspire 5 minute episodes for channel101, but it's still a great read.

same mug but on amazon I've been using the mug for two years and love it.

u/sloecrush · 9 pointsr/community

Jeff had just said, "Balance restored, I guess," which is a line from Chapter Eight of Pauline Baird Jones' WWII time travel novel, Out of Time.

EDIT: Just so everyone knows, this is a true fact — but totally irrelevant. lol

u/SecretCupcakeEater · 2 pointsr/community

It's here for £23 (€30) plus delivery. Which is kind of expensive for a dvd but a lot cheaper than the one you found. I don't know if that's any help but thought I'd share just in case.

Aside from the VCR, strongly reminded me of the card game BANG!

http://www.amazon.com/Bang-Wild-West-Card-Edition/dp/B001Q4XWB8

Similarly steep learning curve. Way too much fun.

Looking it up on Amazon shows that these guys like to use movies and tv for their books: http://www.amazon.com/Organizational-Behavior-Improving-Performance-Commitment/dp/007802935X?tag=ap0a7eddd0-20

Surprised they haven't gotten in trouble.

Blu-Ray Dvd whatever.

It's one of the many thing's that got squirreled away for xmas.

though i am starting to run out of room in the house for DVD's :(.

3 3m long shelves plus about 6 100cmX30cm Cupboards that are all full

---

EDIT: Yeah your right it's a DVD and according to the receipt 6 weeks ago i paid 30AUD for it.

Amazon want's 30USD for whatever quality their standard copy is.

Actually kinda curious what quality it is since they have normal and HD.

6 episodes over a dual layer 8.5Gb disk and even assuming some it is encypted. Is still at least 1GB per episode data wise. meaning that most likely their SD rips are worse quality. Actually found some info. Amazon seems to suggest 456mb per episode for SD. And 1Gb for HD.

My guess is that in this case HD ends up being equivilant to the DVD's. Especially if their is no Blu-Ray copies anyway

u/jkua · 20 pointsr/community

They’re still listed on Amazon from a third party for about $15 (plus another $5.50 shipping in the US).

u/CaptainRaph · 14 pointsr/community

Just double checked, looks like there are still a few left on amazon.

u/bluecalx2 · 2 pointsr/community

I don't have a problem with the fact that people watch the series online when they have no other way to watch them. I live outside of the states so I have to do this myself. But since you're interested in having the DVDs, why not buy them online?

u/Chroko · 1 pointr/community

I rented the season 1 DVDs from NetFlix, it included some outtakes (although I don't know if it included all of them.) The only time the extra content isn't on NetFlix is if the studio makes a special "rental" version of their disks - which tends to happen just for the bigger Hollywood movies. I've not seen any TV shows do this yet, it would probably be too expensive - and not worth their while.

The outtakes are all on YouTube anyway, but you should totally just buy the DVD so you can watch the show forever.

u/BobcatJoe · 6 pointsr/community

I bought mine from Amazon this weekend, and I basically spent the same amount as you. Here are the links I used: Season 1 and Season 2.

In stock. So, either you are new to this whole internet thing, or you were looking for someone to buy it for you. Or possibly a third option that I won't bother coming up with.

I reccomend this box set for anyone if purchasing DVD's/BluRay's is a green light.

Amazon has one for $15. I’ve broken several of my husband’s mugs so I’m known for ordering them from Amazon before telling him.
