The PSU is (mostly) fine, the extra 4 pins on that motherboard are for LN2 cooling so no worries.

Longevity should be a non issue.

Though i would not get that 1TB NVME ssd, its overpriced and 1TB will be eaten alive by any games so you may want.

SSD's only make game loading faster, they do not give you more FPS

Here: I made some modifications to your build

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KfP3FG

This shifts the budget to a better power supply while shifting to a smaller capacity SATA SSD yes but NVME really isnt worth the price premium IMHO and i will be honest I think 1TB SSD's are still a bit too pricey.

NVME is only better for fast data transfer and or if you are going to make this into a media content creation PC but otherwise I would skip it.

Its still better to pair a traditional SSD with a HDD for mass storage, SSD's are great boot drives yes and having them is a great boon indeed.

But as having games on them..... eh its nice to have but not needed.

I mean if you still want a NVME 1TB ssd well there are cheaper options such as this:

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-1TB-NAND-NVMe-PCIe/dp/B07J2Q4SWZ/ref=asc_df_B07J2Q4SWZ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309818716690&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=973939605986231758&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-561975664289&th=1

Far cheaper and will work fairly well

There is also this:

I hear good things about the sabrant rocket, a fairly affordable NVME SSD.

Sabrent isnt like samsung (they are a bit of a off brand) but its not a bad deal there :D

Ok. SSD in an enclosure for temp work. HDD for storage.

Got a Samsung 860 QVO 1TB. Its a cheaper 1TB drive while still being higher quality. Because its not complete mission critical info (meaning it not something like stored photos, old stored files, ext) ill keep you with the QLC flash. Goes with an USB C enclosure that you can just plug in separately from the HDD dock.

Got a 4 drive bay. This is all USB 3.1, but USB 3.1 can handle even the SSD without an issue. Also Thunderbolt docks are expensive.

Going for a 6TB WD Blue drive for 3 reasons:

1: I've known WD drives to be very reliable and of high quality.

2: Value wise, its good to go with the 6TB drive.

3: Adds more expandability.

24TB of storage total whenever you get to buying all 4 drives.

About $416 total assuming you get one 6TB drive.

In my opinion, the best place to start would be to pick up a CompTIA A+ book. I believe the most current versions are the 901&902 (included in a single book).

This is where I started before getting into the IT field. It may be a little overwhelming at first, but this book will do a great job covering a lot of the fundamentals and logic in computing.

Also if your boyfriend feels comfortable after reading this book, he can take the certification test. An A+ certificate looks great when looking for an internship or entry level IT job.

Best of luck!

DONT BUY A MAC BOOK

lol, just my opinion with little to back it up

I don't like Lenovo just because how cheap their stuff can feel sometimes, but they can be a cheap business option. I would say depending on versatility needed, a surface laptop could be a good option. they are small, tend to have good battery life, and a plethora of options to choose from

https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-Intel-256GB/dp/B0727VQLGM/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=surface+laptop&qid=1571879885&s=electronics&sr=1-4

for instance the 16gb of ram and 1tb storage could be good for someone doing massive amounts of editing. where as the i7 with 4gb or ram and 128gb storage would be better for someone doing menial tasks on it

hope this helped.

RAM: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005T63BJM (Replace what you have)
GPU: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07115GPN7

That's about as close as you'll get, but if you're wanting to play newer titles at graphic quality settings above medium, you'll need to increase your budget. If you're wanting hardware to play "high end games on great graphics" and 2 8GB sticks of DDR3 RAM, you'll want to save up at least $600 (accounting for shipping and tax).

u/Trey5169 · 2 pointsr/computers

It looks like it does not support Wifi, googling the specs tells you this. You can bet that if it did have WiFi, they'd use it as a selling point somewhere obvious lol.

Really, any PCI-e wifi card will do. Just get something with a PCI-E x1 connection, make sure it has specs that you like (as well as decent reviews), and slap it in there. I'm personally using this adapter from Gigabyte, since I wanted Dual-Band (2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz) as well as bluetooth functionality for my VR-capable rig. But if you don't need all that, feel free to shop around. I recommend at least a Dual-Channel card though, so check to see if it offers 5.0 GHz connectivity.

The only thing I really dislike about it is that the antenna is a magnetic mount; it sticks to the (out)side of my computer case and just kinda sticks out like a... well, like an antenna. Most of the cards that I've seen around have antenna that just stick out the back of the card, and therefore the back of the PC; out of sight, out of mind.

u/LeInfiniti · 1 pointr/computers

Thanks! Happen to know any good PCI/PCIe cards to use? Oh yeah, would a PCI be better than a PCIe or vice versa? Not quite sure what the difference is..

Edit: I think I'll get this one, it seems to have some pretty great reviews!

u/jongery · 1 pointr/computers

Nothing will beat a wired connection. And you will never get that download speed on wifi... You have no access to your basement or attic to run ethernet? 100 feet is cheap.... Pair it with a 5 port gb switch for your desk would be a nice upgrade if needed...

With ~40 feet of distance, and everything in between like walls and doors, even with the best USB or PCI adapter, there will be signal loss.

A good way to test and see connectivity is to use your cell phone where your PC is located... speedof.me in your web browser, or the Speed Test Ookla app... Also, I know on android, you can see the properties of the access point you are connected to and see the current speed you care connected at, ( n130, dual band n300, ac900~ish)

The Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I you linked would be a decent choice, especially being it has a better positionable antenna... Anything PCI and that type of antenna would be better than usb.

TP Link could work as well

Hey I might be able to help you out. For 600 dollars you can build a pretty beastly machine. The touchscreen will not be available for a desktop unless you buy a monitor with the pc built in meant for touchscreen use https://www.amazon.com/Acer-C24-865-ACi5NT-i5-8250U-802-11ac-Wireless/dp/B07CY79CKZ/ref=sr_1_5?crid=17XWFZVKKY756&keywords=pc+with+touchscreen&qid=1564634502&s=electronics&sprefix=pc+with+to%2Celectronics%2C129&sr=1-5 Your only other option would be a laptop and you dont want that. Now you will not get your moneys worth buying a prebuilt system such as a ibuy power ect. So you are gonna want to build your own machine. Its pretty simple, apply some thermal paste here, insert some ram here type of deal. so because you want portable your gonna want a micro atx system or a micro ITX system. Now for memory, Im assuming you mean storage to download games onto. If not your referring to ram. From your needs im gonna say 16 to 32 gigs is enough. 64 to over 100 gigs is not in your price range. or storage a 1 terabyte drive is pretty cheap. So based on the case you can keep adding more drives or buy a bigger drive. A 14 terabyte drive could be a future goal. Now for specs, for your price range I feel AMD Ryzen may be your best bet. Intel gets better the higher the budget. I will see what i can find. I will also send you a private message to talk more. For 600 bucks I can pick out a system with 16 gigs of ram a quad core processor and more then enough storage, but i will also try to make multiple builds for you. I will take you the intel and AMD rough and let you choose. I will send you links to info about the two and let you choose. Just know the cpu choice will determinate other factors of the build. This includes the motherboard. I will link you to a system builder folder just for you with build picked out I picked just for you. I will also send a link to a pc build guide. I will also look for good pre builts for you. Be expecting a private message.

Dude get this. My sister has the exact same computer and we got that for it. It's super easy to install (take off the side, plug in to PCI port, plug Bluetooth cable in to available plug on the moherboard if you want Bluetooth, put the side back on and then screw the wifi receiver on to the back. Boot up computer and use the disc to install drivers). This thing works perfectly for both wifi and bluetooth and I'm very happy with it.

u/Superpickle18 · 1 pointr/computers

> Before you ask; the reason I'm going for 3 monitors is because right now, I often have moments where 2 monitors just doesn't give me enough space.

Thats why I said two 2k monitors. It's essentially 3 1080p monitors that take less power and less outputs. And my r9 280 had no issue driving that at 60fps.

And they aren't that expensive. I have two of these, and they regularly go for $200.

Also, as a software dev... 3 monitors is nice, but honestly its overkill as two is perfectly fine too.

u/Crystal_Snake · 2 pointsr/computers

Check this out
A very good laptop for this price point.. The only downside of course is don't expect any heavy gaming performance outta this (don't know if you're a huge gamer or not) other than that, this can handle things like web browsing, watching video, word processing, etc. With ease. Hope this helped :D

u/DarkSideOfBlack · 1 pointr/computers

It is pretty weak. You'd probably want something like this EVGA 500B, since it's low cost and relatively decent for low-power rigs.

It looks like DDR3 RAM has had a pretty severe price spike recently, so I would look around on Craigslist for an 8GB set. Alternately, r/hardwareswap is probably a good place to find some reasonably priced 8GB kits. Don't go for anything above like $35 though.

EDIT: Scratch that, PM this guy about the DDR3 if you have $40 to spend on RAM along with the $40 for the PSU.
https://www.reddit.com/r/hardwareswap/comments/5on83m/usatx_h_asus_z87_pro_motherboard_4x2_gb_ddr31333/

EDIT pt2: Never mind, this guy is in WA (cheaper shipping) and is selling 8gb for 30

u/tyler_robotnik · 1 pointr/computers

$700 is a bit tight for some of the newer games, this is the best i could come up with that fits reasonably close to that.

AMD FX-8350

Corsair H75

Gigabyte AM3+ 990FX

corsair vengence pro 2x4

MSI radeon rx470

corsair r500

EVGA 500w

i would recommend you wait a month or so in case the price of AM3+ stuff drops due to the ryzen being released, if that happens you might be able to afford an rx480

u/johnnyp42 · 2 pointsr/computers

It looks like that drive isn't SATA, it's IDE - the back of it looks like this, right?

SATA to usb won't work you'll need something more like this

u/-_Lost_- · 2 pointsr/computers

Any other requirements than that? What are you using it for?

I'm very impressed with how nice my monitor is for how cheap it is:

I found 4 pretty good ones for around that price

  1. ASUS F556UA-AB32 $389.99
    https://www.amazon.com/F556UA-AB32-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01LX0KIGB/?tag=aboutcom02lifewire-20&th=1
    -Has a 15.6 inch 1080p (HD Screen)
    -Wireless internet
    -Average 5 hour battery life
-1 Terabyte hard drive (Thats 1000Gb)
    -Doesn't have a DVD/CD drive
u/leo_nears_jerusalem · 1 pointr/computers

This would allow access to the files inside:

https://www.amazon.com/Generic-Adapter-Converter-Optical-External/dp/B002OV1VJW

There are many like this, simply search for "IDE to USB adapter" or "PATA to USB adapter" on whatever site you're shopping.

u/cris036 · 2 pointsr/computers

If you're picking out of those three I would go with the second one. Your links are from eBay and they dont give the best descriptions so it might be a diff model from what I found.

I'm looking at Amazon Canada. That should ship to where you live.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B011KFQASE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480128373&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=laptop&dpPl=1&dpID=41uXvMCE9UL&ref=plSrch
This one is alright. When you said you had 500 for it. Did you mean Canadian currency? Also, do you really want to spend 500 or would you rather spend less?

u/eim1213 · 1 pointr/computers

That works! If you're not planning on getting a second GPU, id go with this 500w model: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DZ6R9GE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_UXmxybCJPYVFV.

They perform really well for the price.

u/Silver_Foxxx · 2 pointsr/computers

Something like this. It's a 3.5 inch SATA drive if you were wondering.

u/thunderhayes · 1 pointr/computers

The computer is around 10 years old. I'm just looking for a temporary, short term solution.

My other option would be to use this type of enclosure that would make it connect via USB.

u/Bobsupman · 10 pointsr/computers

Get an external drive kit like this one, then remove the hard drive and connect it to a different computer using the kit.

Take it to a pc repair shop they can unsolder the battery and reset it within a day usually. Getting a new hard drive won't do anything since your locking the BIOs bootup for the machine. The laptop is locked from even booting at this point.

Another option is to remove the hard drive and use one of these adapters.
