I was just reading about this! The Idea Factory is a great book that tells the story of Bell Labs.
It's not a good resource for the technical side but I think you'd like Bruno Munari's Drawing A Tree. Here's some images.
I started with Flash back in the late 90s. This is the book that really got me into creative coding and of course the bible of Flash animation by Robert Penner.
Yep, I've used one like this and it worked brilliantly. No drivers needed, full HD, hardly any lag. Only real downside is the price!
