Funny story, I bought one of these the first time they showed up on /r/creepy a few months for my girlfriend. In my head I figured she would like it because she's an artist and she's drawn animal skeletons and amethyst multiple times in the past. However when it arrived I stared at it and thought ".....this is an actual dead baby animal. Why? Why did I think this was a good idea? Who would like this?"

So I told a couple friends about it and they agreed that I might have really poor judgment and maybe I shouldn't give it to her. I was on the fence for a while, couldn't figure out what to do so I just sent out some weird pig snapchats to them in the meantime.

http://imgur.com/a/30DId

but then word spread and all my friends except my girlfriend knew about it and they started making jokes and references to pigs in front of her. She knew something was up and I couldn't go the rest of my life hiding it so I knew I had to fess up.

On Easter, she cooked me some roast pork, and I figured that since she had given me some pig as a gift, it would be a perfect time to return the favor and explain that I had gotten her a rather horrifying gift.

Thankfully she found the whole thing mostly entertaining, but definitely found it weird. However it was such a funny and weird story that she really likes him now. We call him Iggy the Piggy and my friends always ask how our baby is doing.

Edit: The poseable doll thing is the Art Buck drawing model, there's a female version too. The fetus feels and smells like hard, slightly flexible plastic. Obligatory pig in a blanket

There used to be some great ones, but a lot of them were removed when the authors decided to get them published.

This was probably the best one I read on there, and it looks like the guy has done pretty well for himself

It's from their book Our Dumb Century from 1999, with faux front pages from every year of the 20th century.

They've made some good books (and some not-so-good ones), but this is by far the best IMO. And the design is great, it really really looks vintage. That makes the jokes work on a whole new level for me.

Puck was first introduced on page 6 of the first chapter of the manga and he's pretty integral to the story. There's even at least one joke that I can recall about how the manga couldn't continue without him because it would be too dark. I don't know how the anime handles him since I have never watched it but I can't imagine they completely changed his character. It's probably just hampered by horrible animation, direction, and sound design, just like the rest of the anime. Maybe they changed some dialogue and plot-points as well, I wouldn't know.

Honestly I would suggest just reading the entire manga from the start if you have never done so before. All of the adaptations including the original one from the nineties have take liberties with the plot in order to deal with constraints imposed by the adaptation. You can read it for free illegally online or purchase the officially licensed version published by Dark Horse.

It's only the Old Testament, but [this book] (http://smile.amazon.com/Good-Book-Hilarious-Disturbing-Marvelous-ebook/dp/B001TKD4VC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1421367610&sr=8-3&keywords=the+good+book) pretty much consists of a comedian irreverently going through the Bible for the first time in his life. It is damned funny and worth the read, especially if you're considering the task as well.

I read it in a book called Red Victory, a pretty good non-history major friendly work about the Russian Civil War. It's a long read, but fascinating if you enjoy the subject.

There were more examples of KGB atrocities, of course, but this one...stood out.

If you like it, you should check out Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison and drawn by Dave McKean. The game of the same name is loosely based on it. A lot of Batman fans don't care for McKean's art because it is too abstract for a story and he should stick to covers. Personally, I think the comic is awesome and would love to see McKean collaborate with Morrison more.

I love his art style—if you guys are interested, check out The Metabarons comic book series written by Alejandro Jordorowsky illustrated by Giminez. It’s like Dune mixed with Star Wars and LSD. One of my favorites that I can not recommend enough to comic book lovers

Edit: here’s the amazon link to the complete saga. I want to reiterate that the art to this series is something to behold in your hands.

Aye! There's a really fantastic book that touches on the shift for a chapter, The Shock of the New by Robert Hughes. That point in art history is one of the most radical and blindingly fascinating shifts we've ever undergone culturally.

edit: Actually, $20-40 on Amazon is pretty steep. If you'd like, I could type out the relevant pages.

That was a good creepy story. There's a great book that uses actual, weird old photos and builds a story around it. It's a pretty quick read & I wish he'd do a sequel.

u/hnirobert · 2 pointsr/creepy

Not really a children's book, but this was pretty creepy. The artwork was superb.

I'm generally not one for posting promo stuff on Reddit, but the Dyatlov Pass story inspired my latest novel, The Shuddering. At the end of the day (and after many, many revisions), most of the Dyatlov influence was removed to streamline the plot, but the influence remains the same. For those that are interested, this is from a book called Barlowe's Inferno.

It is amazing, not only are there gorgeous depictions of hell, but they have complex explanations of why they look the way they do. Souls are compacted into bricks to be used to build walls, or torn apart to be turned into sashes for demons.

Also interesting is his other art book Expedition, where an astronaut travels to an alien world and documents the flora and fauna in great detail and their life-cycle.

Nice anecdotes that have no relevance to our conversation topic on the current views of the Islamic State.

If you believe the Mongol conquest of West Asia circa 1200 AD is causation of radical Islam we see today, I will not only continue to laugh at you, but encourage others to do so as well.

EDIT: If you're actually interested in learning.

five minutes of research tells me it isn't an "internet myth". the burns archive, for one, not to mention the 3 volume Sleeping Beauty book series, which was published in 1990 and is what brought post-mortem photography back into the public consciousness.

I mean it wasn't beanie baby levels of popular, but I feel like you're downplaying what it actually was.

that said, I absolutely agree that this woman likely isn't dead, but I can see why people would make the comparison.

I'm sorry, I don't have a link to give you, but the man that sold it to me told me about the huge recall of this tape when it was released. The recall was covered up really well, though. Apparently this is the only recalled copy left as far we know. It came in the normal box which looks just like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Goodnight-Moon-VHS-Justin-Arnold/dp/0783116640/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=8-1&keywords=goodnight+moon+and+other+sleepytime+tales+vhs

But the tape itself has stains, scratches, broken plastic and a cracked casing. As you can probably tell, it barely plays. The title sticker on the VHS is missing, and just reads GOODNIGHT MOON in jagged, nearly unreadable writing.

Sometimes the VCR won't even play it at all. It ejects it immediately. I was lucky enough to get a capture on Sunday, but it may not play again for a while.

I don't know what else to tell you, but I'll update here when I find more information. Thanks.

Oh I will!!

Usually I just search for what I'm looking for specifically, like I'm into sea horses right now, and gather lists from that. I'm not into wet yet, even though I so so want to be. Once we have a bigger place and more money, I'll get my creepy room, just not yet. But currently I don't even have room for a creepy cabinet haha

But if you want real biological acrylic samples I highly suggest

I'm in the US and it's worth the hassle and extra shipping.

BUT if you're just getting started, honestly Amazon and etsy. Both have small and quality stuff.

I remember seeing this picture in a book I used to get at the library in grade school all the time.

The book was all about werewolves and there was another one about vampires I used to get that had a bunch of woodcuts like this in it.

I wish I could remember the names of those books. They were pretty graphic and I couldn't believe they had this in our library when I was about 8yrs old. We used to fight over who got to check them out every week.

*EDIT: searched and found the book, here is a link for those interested in this one.

On the Blu-ray, or perhaps it was the DVD since I rented it, The Haunting In Connecticut is a short documentary about how it was once normal in America to keep deceased relatives in the home for a funeral and it was common to take photos with them. The author that narrated the short had done a picture book on the topic, now out of print and selling for astronomical prices on Amazon used. The documentary is only available on one version of the film, not sure which, and IMO it's better than the film. Here's the description.

Memento Mori: The History of Postmortem Photography" (10:26) has author Stanley B. Burns talking about this odd practice.

Here's the book. http://www.amazon.com/Sleeping-Beauty-Memorial-Photography-America/dp/0942642325?ie=UTF8&keywords=Stanley%20b.%20Burns&qid=1465467096&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

Here's someone looking at the photos online describing the once popular phenomena.
