> The bra-ket notation is literally just a way of notating linear algebra. The math doesn't change because of how you write it down.

You've obviously never taken a quantum mechanics class. It's taught as one or the other. I'm not arguing it's different, hence why I said the bra-ket "notation". It's simply the way chemists and physicists prefer to represent the schrodinger equation because it makes their math look better for their most commonly used applications.

I present to you, a perfect example.

This here is a book generally used by chemists when being taught quantum mechanics.

https://www.amazon.com/Physical-Chemistry-Molecular-Donald-McQuarrie/dp/0935702997

And now here is a book generally used by physicists when being taught the same thing.

https://www.amazon.com/Principles-Quantum-Mechanics-R-Shankar-ebook/dp/B000SEIXA2

Do you see how one book works almost exclusively in the linear algebra space while the other works almost exclusively using bra-ket notation? It's a choice, made by professors. Yes, you can learn both, it's not hard. This is why I know you've never taken a quantum mechanics class because this is made extraordinarily clear to everybody in the class. "These two things teach you the same stuff but in different ways. We choose to use this way."

> As for physical chemistry defining how everything works, how much particle physics do you do as a physical chemist?

Well considering I'm a spectroscopist, and a mechanist, quite a bit actually. And sure, I'm sure particle theory absolutely can explain pretty much everything.... in the longest most roundabout way possible. I wasn't aware, however, that the interactions of quarks (other than the electron....) came into play for the typical, everyday chemical reactions that occur constantly. In fact, are there not very few reactions that humans can achieve that actually have enough energy to split a proton or neutron into their constituent parts? I'm pretty sure that once the big bang cooled down everything pretty much settled into the subatomic particles we know and love today. So I mean, unless you plan on replicating the types of heat seen in the big bang.... that level of detail is... well... superfluous. Sure, it MAY be useful in SOME nuclear reactions, but even then, not always. If particle theory explained everything, why is it not used to explain everything? Go on.... explain. I'm waiting.

Also I find it funny that you assume that we didn't learn about subatomic particles smaller than the proton and the neutron. We simply know that they aren't really that useful for most normal situations. In theory? Sure. In reality? No. We're chemists, not theorists. We get shit done.

> Edit: it's also worth noting that bra-ket notation is typically introduced at the undergraduate level of quantum mechanics.

Congratulations! You've discovered the meaning of the word "introduced!"

You can get a PSP 3000 used and in great condition on ebay for as low as $60. If you don't care about finding the best deal, you could easily find one at an average price of $80. From there, you can go on Amazon and get a 32 GB memory stick in the form of a dual-adapter that combines two 16 GB microSD cards into one stick. Even if you stop playing your PSP, you'll still have two 16 GB microSD cards to use for a phone, camera, computer, etc.

Anyways, so it'll come out to about $100. I've done software mods for a fair amount of electronics and I have to say that the PSP is by far the easiest. It's an extremely fast and simple mod that can be reversed at any time by simply restarting the system. It can then be reapplied by running a file that literally just restarts the console as modded.

You can play NES, SNES, GB, GBA, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega CD, PSP, PSX, and more. I played a bunch of GBA, GB, and SNES games on mine and they all ran flawlessly. You can keep the games at their original resolution, fit it to screen, stretch it, or anything else you want. It's awesome. You can even play PSX games perfectly. I played a bunch of Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, and Tomba. Don't forget that you can obviously play anything in the PSP library too. They're uploaded all over the place and you literally just copy/paste them into the Games folder on your memory stick, and they run perfectly.

Seriously, if you want to play emulators on-the-go or even chilling on your couch, get a PSP 3000 on ebay. The screen is nice and big, the buttons are comfy, and everything is simple when it comes to software modification. Here's the basic mod. For $100, it's an awesome setup and I highly recommend it.

Edit: I almost forget to mention that you can use a computer monitor as the display for the PSP if you want. I never cared to, so I can't say whether it's simple to set up or comfortable.

> After consuming my daily provided intake of orange-dusted snacks and Mountain Dew, I always like going online and reading about the true Amerikkkan society that our brainwashing capitalist media doesn't cover (I'm looking at you Faux News). Mr. Kirk, known by his YouTube pen name TheAmazingAtheist, delivers brave insight on the corrupt state of affairs in the United States and the facade that the Christian Right carry over all of our affairs. His message, as encapsulated within this novel, delivers a brave and euphoric message that has indeed proven controversial to the nation. Only these brave media warriors in the blogosphere can say what really goes down in the Western World; it is only with the help of nonreligious middle class white teenage boys that we can hope to educate the masses on how other demographics are the true causes of our problems. As a whole, I am enlightened by this book; not because of some phony critic's blessing, but because of, T.J Kirk's intelligence.

lulz.

Hey folks, awkward host here. Glad you've "enjoyed" the video. To answer a few of your questions/comments:

-The video’s production values are not as good as I wish they were. This was shot four years ago, before (most of) the influx of cash into online media/video. TechCrunch invested in video but it was nothing compared to what you see today (the fact that our cameras weren’t even HD drove me nuts). It was edited by one talented guy on super-fast turnarounds. The fact that this was one of my first attempts at hosting anything, ever, probably contributes just a tad (I was hired as a writer).

-Yeeaaaah I can’t watch the guitar scene either. We knew it would be cringe-inducing at the time (though in hindsight, probably not to this degree). The logic was roughly: in the first episode of this series I get β€˜kicked out’ of the office at the end. You’ve got to end it somehow and the show is called TC Cribs (in MTV Cribs the camera guy gets kicked out at the end). We thought we'd make it a recurring thing, hence the guitar sequence, but eventually decided it was too contrived. The YouTube episode has some creepy gnomes at the end.

-I am an awkward guy. That’s just me. It isn’t all daisies but sometimes you can embrace your quirks it can work out okay. For example, I was really lucky and got to play myself on HBO’s Silicon Valley last season (I host the tech conference they go to in the last couple of episodes).

Oh, you want more cringing? You do realize I host 10 more of these Cribs episodes right?
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHRxVckaE8dawZGx5QRttMt19X-lN7K4t
(you gotta scroll to the bottom for the first 11 episodes; I left TechCrunch after that).

Oh, and don't forget the bloopers.

Vinegar works better from my experience, but yes 1:1 amounts of vinegar to water or lemon juice to water will work. Or you can just buy descaling solution (check out the Coffee & Espresso Machine Cleaning Products section on Amazon). You're supposed to descale your coffee maker and electric kettle every month to every few months (depending on your water and how frequently you use it) to prevent hard water and mineral buildup. This descaling solution on Amazon is probably the best deal that I've found as it's only about $5-6 and is good for 3 uses so that breaks down to only $1.50 to $2 per cleaning.

I'm sure that's a nice parka, but something for 10Β°F isn't even close to what I'm talking about. I already have this.

https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-mens/winter-jacket/mountain-hardwear-chillwave-jacket

That's fine for around town and car camping. I wouldn't use that if I had an outdoor job in an area that has long bouts of temperatures below -40Β°F before accounting for windchill.

If I went for a Canada Goose parka, it'd be something that be warm in temperatures at least 20Β°F colder, so we're talking -40Β°F, with tougher fabric, more pockets, fur ruff, wire lined hood.

This Moncler River looks warm enough, but lacks pockets, and costs about $1000 more than an equivalent Canada Goose parka.

This Outdoor Survival Canada Mission Parka looks like it has the right design and may be even warmer, but still costs more.

Maybe the Chenega II. It might be good enough, but I need more information. It's roughly 25-50% cheaper.

In the same price range is the Fjallraven Arktis. Same comments as the Chenega II.

The Triple F.A.T. has a bit more down than the Chenega and Fjallraven, and is less expensive too. Still far from being 25% the cost though.

They can ask the person who made the comment, like you just did :)

The difficult aspect of recommending headphones is preference. Personally, I do not like "bass-heavy" sound. If I did, Beats would be the place to go. If you prefer a flat response where none of the frequencies are emphasized by the headphones (which I do), I recommend dropping $100 on the Grado SR80e. Others will often recommend Audio Technica, which are also fantastic! Just find a pair within your price range, and they will be better than $300 Beats. Sennheiser is also highly recommended. If possible, go to an electronics store and try them out to see which ones fit your listening style.

Elizabeth Smart actually wrote a book talking about the whole ordeal, like how it started, how she was treated and how she felt, and then how she got found and the aftermath of it all. It's a really moving read if anyone is interested. Amazon Link

It's quite pricey but I found it fascinating. It's remarkable how well she came through it.

u/2OQuestions Β· 2 pointsr/cringe

I agree. I see it happening with many of my favorites. Drawings are definitely more abstract, sexualized and do not match the way the character is described by the author. The Kindle edition of Anne of Green Gables portrays her as a gorgeous model.

http://www.amazon.com/Anne-Collection-including-Exclusive-Features-ebook/dp/B00CBM2TZY/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1393871482&sr=1-4&keywords=anne+of+green+gables

I am in agreement with you. If it gets my nieces to read....

u/LivingLeper Β· 14 pointsr/cringe

There's actually a huge body of research suggesting both of these points are wrong. Check out Susan Pinker's The Sexual Paradox. A basic summary that wouldn't be doing Pinker justice is that women aren't that high up in the corporate ladder simply because they don't want to be and (a lot of the time) can't. They complete graduate degrees much more often and much more effectively than men and are given considerably good opportunity in business, but they lean towards careers centered towards human welfare/healthcare and they're preoccupied with children. It would be remarkably hard to give this nuanced of an answer to this question in 30 seconds though, and nobody likes to hear that women are actually given more opportunity than men...

I've used these Dyson hand dryers at my university and they're pretty awesome.

I enjoy Titanfall 2, it'd be weird for me to wear a backpack with the cover of the game on it (think child's backpack) but it's okay if it's a themed backpack that just looks like something from the game, like this one

Yeah I don't have an amp :(. Just my phone. I'm not an audiophile really but I do appreciate a good pair of headphones.

u/ranma08 Β· 1 pointr/cringe

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm not an audiophile by any means so I'm wondering if you tell me if my equipment is high end enough. The reason I'm asking is because when I took the TIDAL quiz to tell the difference between regular and HiFi quality, the best I could do was 3/5. Anyways, here are my speakers and headphones.

Why is there a bottle of olive oil on the table? Is it supposed to be a symbol of the olive branch references in the bible? This dude couldn't be any lazier could he? I mean you can literally buy a nice decorative olive branch on Amazon and have it delivered in one day. Praise Jesus!!

i watched all his videos before he took them off youtube, there were only like 7 total or something, but some of them were ~30min long. they seemed to be from several years before his notoriety, because he had a lot more hair.

there were a few called "college truth" about how college doesn't really help young people, and i think at least one about his business ideas.

there was also one of him as a young man, thinner and bearded, dancing in front of a green screen (i think with city scenes projected onto it) to hip hop.

here's some of his writing.
