Hey all,

Finally got around to reorganizing my DVDs and Blurays and here's my collection of criterion titles, along with the questionnaire. And what good is a Criterion post with a few bonus features at the end?

The Questionnaire:
Where are you from? NYC originally but currently living in LA

How old are you? 33

When did you start collecting Criterion? 2011, about a year into film school. Although I had seen and enjoyed many Criterion releases, it was when I started studying and making films that I wanted to have as many great films on hand to rewatch, study, and steal from!

Do you collect Blu-ray or DVD? Bluray

What is your favorite Criterion release? Probably a toss up between Persona and In The Mood For Love. Both are so beautiful and haunting in very different ways, and as pivotal films for the directors the special features are interesting and insightful.

What is your least favorite Criterion release? I Vitelloni because I adore the movie and it's not on Blu-ray yet!

Who is your favorite director in the collection? Hard to top Kubrick

Who is your favorite director outside of the collection? / Film to get the treatment - Lina Wertmuller and Swept Away for one! Her box set (which I included on the left of my photo) is excellent, albeit DVD. First female director nominated for best director. Her films are so smart, funny and surprising. Highly recommend.

Big Lebowski, Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood and Midnight Cowboy would be great additions as well. Oh and how come Husband's didn't make it into the Casaavettes box set!?! It's a masterpiece!

Which Criterion do you most want that is not in your possession? - Life of Brian / RoboCop because they are brilliant and out of print, Seven Samurai and 8 1/2 because I should already have them as a cinephile, and La Haine because a friend loaned it to me and blew my mind!

How do you organize your collection? I know I said I reorganized my collection but that meant collecting the boxes strewn around my living room and putting them neatly on a shelf. It's very common for me to hunt for a specific film, find the box, and realize I've misplaced the disc! So organization is not my strong suit.

BONUS FEATURE:

You may have noticed another DVD in my collection that isn't a Criterion Release: it's a film I made called It's Better In Italian, which is a short documentary about the Italian doppiatori--the voice over actors that dub English-language films into Italian. While I don't expect it to be a Criterion release anytime soon, I hope one day it could be one of the supplemental materials on a film I have yet to make that will get the Criterion treatment. It does have a Kevin Bacon game connection to Criterion--the great Peter Weller of RoboCop and Naked Lunch narrates the film!

Until then, if you're interested, the entire film is available on Amazon (free with ad-roll or ad-free with Prime) here:

https://www.amazon.com/Its-Better-Italian-Roberto-Pedicini/dp/B0756P7ZZY

And if you want to see some of my more recent comedy work, check out my series Arun Considers ( www.arunconsiders.com ) and Dr. Rabbi Moishe Dovid Bernstein ( https://youtu.be/CSRWsNqhiIQ )

So enjoy, both my collection, my movie and web series!

Here's my take:

Wheels on Meals - it's basically a Canto-Comedy with sporadic action bits that builds to a low key but really good fight scene at the end. I say low key because there aren't a lot of stunts but the fight, with Benny "The Jet" Urquidez is considered one of Chan's best, and his "brothers" Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung get to strut their stuff as well.

Project A I & Project A II - essential. These are two of the best movies Jackie's ever made.

Police Story I & Police Story II - the first is better than the second, but again, these are essential Chan films.

Dragons Forever - Jackie, Sammo, and Yuen Biao made several films together, and this is their best. I'd put it in the top five for Chan. Sammo Hung directs and he truly is the great modern action director, so his editing and choreography mixed with Jackie and Yuen's incredible physical abilities, on top of a supporting cast featuring some of the heaviest hitters in Hong Kong history, delivers a movie that has great chemistry between its three leads, comedy that actually works, and amazing action.

Crime Story - Jackie got a lot of flack for this intense movie from director Kirk Wong, which was a deliberate attempt to change his image in the Nineties, and a lot of people feel like the "realistic" action was disappointing. Those people are jerks. Time has been kind to this movie. It's a definite change of pace for Jackie, but Wong's storytelling, the fantastic supporting performances, the sheer Michael Mann-esque scale and scope this simple kidnapping story gets thanks to the schedule and budget a star like Chan commands, and even the action sequences look absolutely fantastic today.

Miracle - I'm torn on Chan's remake of Frank Capra's Pocketful of Miracles but ultimately I think it's terrific. Jackie directed and it's got absolutely amazing cinematography. He puts as much effort into his shot composition and camera movement as he does in his action. There are fewer fight scenes but the ones that are here are deeply intricate and among his best. The comedy can be really broad and there are parts that will baffle Western audiences (did anyone ever think it was a good idea to give Richard Ng a five minute scene just to do his schtick?), but I think ultimately it works despite being hopeless corny. Sumptuous, heartfelt, and probably should have been directed by someone else.

The Protector - nah. I mean, it's got some Eighties action charm, but this attempt to turn Jackie into Dirty Harry is pretty disappointing. It's interesting to compare Glickenhaus's version to Jackie's reshot and recut version but ultimately it's not very good.

City Hunter - very, very long and full of broad comedy and really tacky sex jokes, I really love this movie but your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for early Nineties Hong Kong cheese. Wong Jing is HK's evil genius of bad taste and here he applies himself to a goofy adaptation of a manga where Jackie plays a James Bond kind of private investigator. But there are so many great touches that I can't help loving it. Is it a good movie? No. Is it the kind of thing you'd show at a party with a lot of beer to melt people's faces? Yes.

And if you can find a good Blu Ray of Armour of God I & II you should grab them. It's Jackie doing Indiana Jones and while they have their rough spots, they're also kind of amazing in terms of their scale and scope.

Hey there. You got a lot of recommendations for the channel but since you mentioned your love of Lynch I thought I would throw a couple films to that may interest you and reminded me a little about Lynch.

Under The Skin-is an incredible, somewhat minimalist sci-fi film. It doesn't have the wit of Lynch but the alien scenes have a little bit of an abstract, horror bent that reminded me of the more intense red room/bob scenes. In some ways I feed this is how Lynch would portray aliens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcR5KHjoc-0

Second is Holy Motors. This is a wonderful film that to me mixes the humour, bizarreness, and creativity I love in the best of Lynch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWu9WjEcdbk&list=PLCJeOyMTQAFiSgL22VKyOf1Ug22nZgIVI&index=17&t=0s

Finally if you love Lynch, I'd suggest exploring his art and writing. The recent book giving an overview of his work is wonderful and really a great price: https://www.amazon.com/David-Lynch-Someone-My-House/dp/3791384708/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=someone+is+in+my+house&qid=1566404356&s=gateway&sr=8-1

If you really want a copy but don't want to break the bank, you can get the StudioCanal Blu Ray, which has a lot of the same extras as Criterion. There are some exclusive extras to the Criterion version (e.g. the Steven Soderbergh commentary) so if you want to be completionist, you could also get the Criterion version on DVD from somewhere second hand, like eBay or something.

This is the StudioCanal release:

https://www.amazon.com/Third-Man-Blu-ray-Joseph-Cotten/dp/B00X7RHT5C/ref=tmm_blu_title_1?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

It's region free, although Amazon seems to list as Region B for some reason.

You could get the Criterion DVD for probably around $20 and the above for around $15.

u/grapthar · 3 pointsr/criterion

This is the Anchor Bay DVD mentioned previously. If you just want the disc, there are a few ex-rentals for $20 + shipping. I actually have a complete one with slipcover and insert listed on amazon for a ridiculously high price, but if you are interested I would happily sell it to you directly for much cheaper (or even just trade it for something).

There are also a few listed on ebay for about the same price, but one of the listings has conflicting photos (the disc is not what should be with that cover art), and the rest have no photos or description at all. Be careful, there are alot of "region free" and "import" versions with terrible quality.

As far as the blu ray goes, from what I've heard the American Herzog set, while certainly a step up from the DVDs, is not that great quality wise. I've heard the set to get is the BFI one from the UK/Europe. I have seen neither, and am only repeating internet speculation.

Hope this helps!

u/Nevtendo · 2 pointsr/criterion

the poster above me linked the thread just about that topic. I didn't contribute to the thread, but I bought this https://www.amazon.com/Seiki-SR4KP1-Up-Converting-Blu-Player/dp/B00MB54M9W

I got it for 60 dollars while it was on sale (forgot the site, Buydig?) One annoying thing about it though (and with most region free players) are that you gotta select the region code when you switch what disc you use to a different region. Not a big deal, thats just me being super lazy and not wanting to press literally some buttons.

Once you go region free it opens up Arrow Video/Academy, Eureka/Masters of Cinema, BFI, Indicator and some more boutique labels that are doing releases ranging from almost as good to equal to better than Criterion releases. Surf their catalogs! there are tons of stuff people are screaming at Criterion to get!

u/producepat · 3 pointsr/criterion

If he's a fan of Wes Anderson, there's a book I was gifted by a friend for Christmas one year and I loved it https://www.amazon.com/Anderson-Collection-Matt-Zoller-Seitz/dp/081099741X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479769976&sr=8-1&keywords=wes+anderson+book

Another interesting idea that my girlfriend did for me, she made a picture frame into a little drop box for ticket stubs you get at movie theaters. Fun way to keep a hold of them and document every movie you go to at a theater.

It’s one of my top 3 of all time as well. If you like the music, Riccardo Chailly just released The Fellini Album ,which is a collection of Nino Rota’s music for Fellini films. It’s amazing.

Just a heads up, StudioCanal did a 4K restoration a few years back, which looks arguably better than the Criterion release. There are a few different releases with the new transfer, but I prefer the French Digibook that you can pick up on amazon.fr for like €12. The transfer was never released in the US, but the French and UK releases are region-free.

I would've preferred they used the same height and length as the Bergman set so you could at least use the same shelf space for both.

I'm planning to get something like this to mount it on the wall, almost like a poster.
