Hi! I've heard this is a good collection with a good quality translation, but being Mexican I've always read his work in Spanish. I'll ask a friend and let you know if she comes up with anything better.

I would recommend Ficciones (I think it is named the same in English) as a Borges starting point. It has some of his best stories (Tlön, my personal favorite by him, among them). Also without spoiling anything, I'll just say his themes are, most of the times, related with truth, existence, loops, time, and the universe.

Let me know what you decide and what you think of him.

If you want specific titles from his short stories that I would recommend:

Tlön Uqbar Orbis Tertius if you love fantastic worlds and have a soft spot for linguistics.

"There are more things" (that's the original title, yeah, in English). Won't say anything else about it.

The book of sand is actually a great story.

The Garden of Forking Paths is a bit of a thriller and a puzzle.

Happy reading!

Into the storm was great! Kinda off the wall, so it gets a smaller audience than it deserves. I loved the trick that the sister and the human sailor played (names escape me). The scene with giant paleolithic monsters in a ferocious primordial sea attacking fucking WWII Destroyers was scary awesome, great way to kick off the book.

So you like alternative universes with talking animals? Try this little known gem.

[Here's another dusty treasure, set in the far future.] ( http://www.amazon.com/Starbridge-C-Crispin/dp/0441783295/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1344184739&sr=1-1&keywords=starbridge) It remains the best First Contact with aliens story that I've ever read.

I am still trying to wrap my brain around the ending. the significance etc... The writing was always good. The further you read and the older the main character gets the cleaning and easier it is to interpret. Chapter 7 where Eiji gets a job in the pizza shoppe and Yakuza's interaction with him are a bit over the top. If you think about it. Why would they spend that much time and energy bothering him and trying to make him pay his debts.
Eiji's relationship with Ai is sweet and they should of let that develop more. My faveroite character is Buntaro his landlord. But he plays such a minor role. On my goodreads I gave it 4 stars.
My next book "Off to be the Wizard" is totally random amazon buy. Hopefully it is good
