Yup! The Gestural Origin of Language is a very interesting theory. There's a great book on this, if anybody is curious about it.

I've found similar problems.. I wanted to get a wooden block puzzle for one of my nephews... and I was really disappointed that the once simple wooden puzzle for a toddler now has sound.

I'm the only deaf person in my family but I refuse to buy a toy that unnecessarily has sound. It's a puzzle not a see-and-say.

To answer your question any toy that builds motor skills are fine. Simple wooden blocks are great toys. I found a great deal on a set of wood blocks but just keep in mind some block sets might have pieces that are too small for a 1 yr old. I had to cull the set and the ones that are too small will wait in storage until he's old enough. (An easy way to check: if it can fall through a toilet paper tube, it's too small for a 1 year old.)

For anyone curious, this is what I found.. the theme was different but the concept and brand was the same.

This is a difficult thing to recommend, given the restrictions your friend is up against. Most of the books I want to recommend depend on a supplemental DVD, which I understand is out of the question. A couple more that I know of are spiral-bound, which I'm assuming would also be disallowed in a prison setting.

The American Sign Language Phrase Book is really the best one that I can personally think of that doesn't rely on additional material and would probably be allowed.

I beta-tested the /u/Biblos_Geek headphone and pretty much I found the same positive results listed by the other reviewers I just read here.

I will mention what I purchased to pair up the 2E1+Vibe to make it work. The headphone to me was free but I purchased these parts to make it work (costs may have changed on Amazon since my purchase).

Class D amp at $22

3.5mm audio splitter $5

3.5mm male to male cable $5

So my costs out of pocket were under $35 (give or take). Set up was fairly simple - no more difficult than wiring up a TV with external speakers. I am profoundly deaf in one ear and somewhat normal hearing in my other working ear. I would be willing to beta_test for this again if asked. So a positive experience over all.

I lost the hearing in my right ear years ago. This is what I use at the gym, and it is pretty sturdy. Good luck

Flashing timers!!! They exist. They’re fucking amazing.

Edit: here is one on amazon for 10 bucks

Your HA probaly has the T function. In that case you can use these earhooks. I have the exact same ones. I paid 20 euros for them. They seem quite pricey on Amazon I'm sure you can pick them up cheaper elsewhere. http://www.amazon.com/Maxi-Aids-NoiZfree-Audio-Binaural-Earhooks/dp/B000TJUOVM/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1463003947&sr=8-6&keywords=hearing+aid+earphones

I always use two layers. One thin layer like these:

Then another layer of thick gloves. This has served me well during skiing, camping in the snow, and cold South Dakota winters.

I've seen some use these:

Flip the mittens back when you need to sign, then flip them back on when you need to be warm.

Thanks a lot! I'm thinking of this one which is $50 (somehow a third of the original price)

I like this one because not only it flashes, it also vibrates when the time's up. It also has a fastener thing so we can clip it to our pants/shorts/belt so we can forget about the timer and walk around freely. The device's vibration will remind us when it's time. You can also use your phone's clock app as well.

You could buy a really cheap I-Love-You-shaped cookie cutter and bake her a plate of gifts. It's low-cost and delicious!

I'm not a doctor & never tried to be, but perhaps a good read: When The Phone Ring, My Bed Shakes.

Zippered Wristbands - slide exciters in. By the way a deaf purchaser of my vibe belt out of the blue also mentioned somehow embedding exciters in clothing item or gloves, etc.

Could buy an ASL book... I (hearing) grew up referring to The Joy of Signing once in a while.
