Don't throw with gloves on. Put a nice warm insulated mitten (not a glove, mittens are FAR better for this) on your throwing hand. When it's time to throw, simply pull your throwing hand out of the mitten, throw, and then put your hand back in the mitten afterwards. If it's cold enough, stick one of these hand-warming packets inside your mitten and I guarantee that hand will be nice and toasty. Feel free to wear a glove on your non-throwing hand since you won't be constantly pulling that glove on and off. Why a mitten? Because they're just better insulated to start with, plus with a mitten you can ball your hand up inside the mitten to warm it faster. If you use a hand warmer packet inside the mitten you can grab onto it with your bare hand as well.

I played a round in the middle of Nebraska winter, when it was 18 degrees and windy, and my hand was actually so warm inside of the mitten with the warming packet that I had to pull it out occasionally even when I wasn't throwing just to keep it from sweating.

  • Keep one of these in your pocket, and always keep your hand in your pocket with it.

  • Or get the much more bad ass Zippo version. It's more expensive up front, but after the initial purchase, the price drops dramatically. This are also warmer than a Hot Hands.

  • There is a guy around here that makes this Mitten thing that is open on one end. It's hard to explain. It is a sheep skin mitten with an open end. You wear it on your left hand all the time, and when you are walking or standing around, you put your right hand in the front of it to warm it up. Kind of like a quarter back hand warmer, except you wear it on your left hand. The best part is that is has a thumb, so you can still use your left hand to pick up your bag or hold a disc. I have seen them sold at D-Town Disc Golf in Doylestown PA, and I think he sells them out of his trunk at tournaments, but I don't know if he has an online store or anything.

I played this past weekend and the temp was close to 0 before windchill was factored in.

I wore these pants, which /u/afropirg recommended, with a pair of longjohns underneath. It was the perfect amount of warmth and very nonrestrictive. On top I wore a few long sleeve layers (underarmor cold gear, thermal, thin cotton hoodie) under a wool softshell. Again, I had full range of motion and wasn't bulky. The only thing I'd potentially add would be a wind resistant layer, but I wouldn't say it's necessary.

The only parts of me that got cold were my feet, I had only worn a single pair of wool socks in my waterproof boots. And my face when playing into the wind.

The takeaway here is, warm socks x2 and a face shield if its windy.

Also, one thing I learned is that when you take your hand out of your gloves to putt, if your hand is warm it will stick to the cold soft plastic of putters. Causing some awkward releases. I remedied this by taking my hand out early to give it a chance to 'cool off' for a clean release.

u/Royalhghnss · 2 pointsr/discgolf

I use auto settings for aperture, it's really useful when the disc goes from an open area to a shaded area. Auto focus works great on camcorders for tracking discs.

The main difference is that with a camcorder I have to track the disc, and zoom. With a DSLR you need to focus, zoom, adjust aperature, and track the disc. It's near impossible to do all 4 things at once perfectly. The best at it is McFly, and even he has issues at times.

The ring on my camcorder can be set for aperture if you want to do it manually.

Lens is not interchangeable it's fixed.

Also Bokeh is not for round coverage, it's for artsy vids/highlight vids. When's the last time you saw bokeh on and NFL or NBA broadcast.

Thanks! BTW check out neewer shoulder mounts on amazon. 25 bucks, and they're amazing.

I just got a Zuca recently and love the shit out of it. However, I really really suggest getting one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BOCA44/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and cutting it in half, and replacing the tube in your tires with it. It still rolls great, but you'll never have to worry about a flat. And make sure you use something to cover up that valve hole in the rim with some sort of adhesive to prevent water from seeping in and soaking your foam tube. There are some great places online for Zuca mods where people modify their carts, a lot of them look fucking awesome.

Play night golf in backyard course few times/week and tried almost everything.

-Glow discs vs lights vs tape, generally the lights will be the best option, and generally by a large margin. Discs are ok if open field, tape is meh, but lights work in any environment, and even when buried in long grass. It's actually easier to find a disc with a light in 2 foot grass at night than during the day.

-Glow discs themselves, if it isn't Kastaplast, it doesn't actually glow worth a shit, don't bother.

Using these for baskets thanks to another redditor (just order some cheap carabiners), and don't look directly at them when not expecting it, frigging bright

Bought this as charging light, it's ok but a bright ass tactical style light with pocket clip charges them just as well honestly and serves the dual purpose of avoiding snakes etc and navigating around, personally I'd skip it and buy a $20-30 fenix

Tape, it's ok but expected better, maybe try gorilla brand etc

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DH8I8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Each basket gets a lantern, each kastaplast gets a battery and 2 led's both top and bottom, tactical light with spare battery in pocket, and we're off.

Personally doing Grym X, Gote, and Berg if want a bag or hands full, or just a Kaxe Z if 1 disc'ing it.

DD Trooper Bag @ $40 is probably the easiest entry level backpack style bag to get into

Then DD Sniper Backpack is up from there with more storage, and a streamlined boxy look at about $80

Upper Park Designs Shift @ $130-$140 is popular, but often sold out.

MVP Voyager Slim can has a huge price range depending on color from $115 to $175, which seems odd

After that you're into 200$ and up for bags, or real cheap no-name chicom stuff from amazon. Some of it may be good, but still at the same price point as the Innova and DD I just went with a name I associate with Disc Golf already.

I personally chose the Innova for cost to storage ratio at 80 bucks seemed like a good bet. It's been good so far, but only time will tell.

u/jonbush404 · 2 pointsr/discgolf

Commented this on another glow golf thread a while back but here is what I do and I've tried about everything that has been mentioned so far... hope this helps!

>I don't really care for having to charge a disc every other shot or so, we normally use those little Mini Fishing Glowsticks and a small piece of Clear Packing Tape they glow super bright, don't have to be charged and really don't affect the flight of the disc that I've noticed. Definitely not PDGA legal so won't work if you're playing a tourney but it's much brighter than a glow disc and pretty cheap in bulk. You can put one on top and one on bottom for non see through discs.

u/PolyPill · 3 pointsr/discgolf

bestdiscgolfdiscs.com suggests a Valkyrie, Roc, and Aviar for 3 discs. They do use Amazon Pay but you can't use a gift card for that, which is why I assume you specify Amazon.

The problem with buying a set is they're just going to give you what ever they have but it will be cheaper than buying individually.

This Innova Set is decent, The TeeBird is my favorite Innova fairway drive and one of the best all around discs and it has a recommended Roc. I can't say anything about the Rhino but I think when you're starting out putters don't matter much. A similar Innoa Set This one is Leopard, Roc, and Aviar. So maybe this is a little safer as most players will agree that Roc and Aviar are solid discs. Then maybe throw in a GStar Valkyrie and you're just over $40 but you've got some solid discs.

This set of 4 Discraft goes right up to your budget but there's no listing of discs so it's a gamble. In the photo you see a Nuke which is a horrible disc for beginners.

This DGA set Is notable because they're all 150 class discs. Lighter discs can be good for absolute beginners but if you did play a little and can throw then light discs might be more of a burden. It all depends on your arm speed, I'd probably suggest this more for women and children. The Squall is a great beginner mid and the Reef is a solid putter. In normal plastic I'd say the Rogue is not good for beginners but being so light it might work.

If you were to put it on your wall I would get a shadow box or something. Whirling Circles makes a good shadow box that I think is available on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HLYGWS9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537734553&sr=8-1&keywords=shadow+box+disc+golf

It would probably be pretty cool and my area's tournament leader gets his in bulk from Amazon. Each tournament in my area gives out a display case as the 1st place prize for the winner to hold a trophy disc or an ace disk. I would check out Whirling Circle.

Find some five ten guide tennies for $50. They are approach shoes (Semi-technical rock climbing). Or another approach shoe.

I got red size 13 for $50. They look brand new after 1.5 years. They are also a bit ugly until you wear them a bit and knock the brightness down a notch with some mud and grit.

They will take a few rounds to break in, but then they feel comfortable. Switch to gym shoes after the round. Approach shoes are stiff, so not the best for driving home. Great on Rocky fairways and protect your foot really well.

They are showing pictures of two different baskets. As each basket has different chain configurations. One just has 24 outer chains, while the other has a set of inner chains.

The one with inner chains, has heavier/beefier chains. Looks identical to an MVP Black Hole Pro. They retail for about $140.

The basket with just the outer chains look like the baskets sold under the name Yaheetech. They retail at Amazon for about $100 each.

I'm not sure I'd order 10 or more of these baskets directly from China. For 10 baskets, I'd expect shipping to cost $300 to $500, more than what the baskets are worth. Maybe if I owned an import business, where I had my own shipping containers being shipped regularly. Maybe then it would be worth the hassle and the wait.

Anyways, you could probably get the Yaheetech on sale for about $85. Black Hole Pros are sometimes on sale for about $120. These aren't very heavy duty baskets though, and probably won't do well, if you keep them outside in the elements. Guess that's why they are considered portable.

If you search and asked around locally, maybe you could find some good USED baskets. It just matters where you are located. If it's a popular disc golf area, you may be in luck, as some courses get new baskets every 10 years or so, and they sell the old used ones for a nice discount.

u/paperclouds412 · 2 pointsr/discgolf

Columbia North Plains WP are the best affordable option out there. I paid like 50 for mine. I've worn them all winter along with wet rounds. I recently got a pair of waterproof socks that are amazing just as added protection.

Here they are for $33. Here are the socks.

u/zoidbergular · 3 pointsr/discgolf

I've played some rounds in the low 20s this season, and a couple in the snow. Waterproof shoes/boots, layers, gloves, handwarmer packets, and maybe a face mask/balaclava are about all you really need. An extra pair of socks would be a good idea if you're playing a couple rounds. Layers are key for me because I typically find that I'm sweating after a few holes and have been moving around. It's lot more work tromping through the snow for a round or two.

A friend and I also bought those handwarmer sleeves like NFL QBs use, and they make a huge difference if you're willing to drop the $20-25. Just make sure it has a Patriots logo, otherwise you're wasting your money.... ;)

Growler filler would work. I keg almost everything but a growler for travel is great sometimes. Maybe like this: https://www.amazon.com/Bev-Rite-Extraordinary-Jug-Growler/dp/B003FW6BA8

u/puckhead · 1 pointr/discgolf

I just made the jump to a backpack recently and went with the Sniper. It's quite a bit cheaper than most of the other options and after a couple months it seems to be holding up great. One thing I like about it compared to ones I see other people using is that it has a pocket that can hold a light jacket. That's been really useful this time of year.

One of the options there looks like it might be Aviar/Roc/Valkyrie.

I got a 4 piece set with a bag that was aviar/roc/tee-bird/beast that I really like, but the only seller left has jacked the price up.

Through my first 30ish rounds, they've held up nicely though. Would recommend Innova.

https://www.amazon.com/Innova-Mini-DISCatcher-Disc-Golf/dp/B01E4C19EA

I purchased this last week. Not for kids but for myself. It comes w/ 5 discs and is amazingly fun. The kids can do it around the house and maybe bangin' them chains on a small scale will help get them into bigger discs

u/YourSnarkyFriend · 2 pointsr/discgolf

This has been a big hit at our house in addition to the backyard basket. 😁 5 year old daughter loves to join in on rounds (if it’s not too hot because, Oklahoma 🥵)

u/greensmurf30 · 2 pointsr/discgolf

i have no idea! but hopefully people will be able to give some feedback about this one, the fade crunch box, as that is the one i am debating getting. some better pictures are on the fade website and some reviews are on amazon.

i don't really want to end up carrying a bunch of discs, and i just want something that can switch between carrying a full 12 discs, or a half load and some brewskis. what kind of bags are you eyeing?

u/chason_htx · 6 pointsr/discgolf

The Fade Crunch Box will fit that bill for around $30 (more colors around the net if you look). It's marketed as a 12 disc bag, and has a divider. I bet I could fit 10 discs in (2 in the putter pocket) and a six pack without much coercion. It's not insulated... but for the money, I'd just toss a few ice packs in there.

It's very well made, I routinely carry a 2L of water with me on the course, no signs of wear on the bag yet.

As for straps, I got the LC-1 H-type military suspenders for about $15 shipped. I can't justify spending $50 on straps... these do the job quite nicely.

u/Afropirg · 1 pointr/discgolf

I use these tucked into my hoodie. Fits perfect, keeps my hands warm, especially with a hot hands inside and is out of the way when throwing.

I have Nike Hyperwarm winter running gear base layer to wear under my 4ucycling pants. My legs never get cold. Feet I have a pair of winter hiking socks.

u/Dalek_Genocide · 1 pointr/discgolf

I bought one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Innova-Champion-Discs-DISCatcher-Traveler/dp/B008RU1UV8/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=innova+disc+golf+basket&qid=1566831074&s=gateway&sr=8-4

It doesn't catch as well as a normal basket but it's fairly obvious when you would have nailed a put on a normal basket and when you wouldn't have.

I like it because it folds up into just bigger than a camping chair. I like to take it camping or on family vacations where there is a lot of space so it fits easily into my van.

u/DGJKJ · 2 pointsr/discgolf

If you have a ton of power especially if you grew up pitching or playing baseball an Aerobi Epic 100% is the best tomahawk disc you can throw. I would put any amount of money that it will go further than any other disc you can tomahawk. I can easily get 400 feet from a tomahawk out of it. The way it works is it will throw like a normal tomahawk disc but then if you can throw it hard enough and high enough it will do a barrel roll mid air and then glide for everrrrrr on its way down and its straight as an arrow. The only problem is good luck finding one, up until recently you could get them on Amazon or wherever I recently looked to pick up 2-3 more and I found a used one on Ebay for $5. Other sellers are asking $100? (lol) Keep an eye on this link hopefully they get more in stock as they sell it for 12-14 bucks.
https://www.amazon.com/Aerobie-Epic-Golf-Disc-Colors/dp/B001EYIQZW

Edit: I did find them on this website but I'm not sure it looks a little sketch like a website right out of the early 2000s. https://playground.epicsports.com/prod/74175/aerobie-epic-golf-disc.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwkoDmBRCcARIsAG3xzl_RIOvhR0m40yiHdFDHROVMTyxQ8p6_EDRR8HRFJA8IwGX8OvkIVVwaAuseEALw_wcB

(Also when they are new they are very very hard to get them to flip over horizontally and will often flip and come down at an angle killing some distance. Either change the angle you release at to compensate and get it to flip correctly or just throw it a bunch let it fall from the sky and break in.)

u/Mostrodamus · 1 pointr/discgolf

I was in the same dilemma and after long debate on which one I should buy I ended up going with the Innova Discatcher Traveler for $122 on Amazon and don't regret it for a second.

The quality is so much better than the Franklin Sports and it has real chains. Folds up nicely and includes a carrier bag and all accessories needed to set it up. Spend a little more, you won't regret it.
