I went to Iceland this past February and took my Mavic Pro. Some tips I have for you are:

  • Keep your batteries warm! The color temperature can really kill your battery life, or prevent the drone from turning on if the batteries are too cold. I put some of these hand warmers (https://www.amazon.com/HotHands-Hand-Warmers-Odorless-Activated/dp/B0007ZF4OA/ref=sr_1_3?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1536981832&sr=1-3&keywords=hand+warmers) into a sock and placed them next to my batteries in my backpack. They did wonders to keep things just warm enough to maintain charge, but didn't make me worried at all that the heat would damage the batteries or anything else in the bag.
  • Be careful of the wind! The wind in Iceland can be super unpredictable, especially as you move over steep drops or cliffs. I saw someone lose their Phantom when they flew it up over a ledge (we were standing below a cliff). My best guess is the wind gust above the cliff was much stronger and took the drone in the opposite direction from where we were standing. He tried to throw it into sport mode (I think) and fly it back, but the wind was too strong up over the cliffside.
  • Be prepared to bring your drone back from flight at a moments notice. Again, the weather is unpredictable and can change in minutes. I arrived at a landmark and it was bright/sunny with barely a cloud in sight. I took the drone up and no joke, ten minutes later it was full on snowing with sleet and the entire sky above me was overcast. Just be aware and be ready to bring the drone back when things change. In Iceland they say if you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes. This is 100% true of my experience in the winter.
  • Be respectful to others. Icelanders are SUCH nice people. If there's a no drone sign I'd really encourage you to respectfully keep the drone in your bag and just enjoy the amazing scenery.

>The gimble, it appears to be VERY fragile, should I be concerned when making tight banking moves, and should I always keep the gimble lock on when transporting the drone?

-Yes, always lock it in while transporting. I feel like all it would take is one good drop or catching it on something while storing it and it could rip a cable or part off.

>I saw someone had a DJI app that showed them their flight time, like a data logger thing, it showed them their 'level' etc., (assuming its based on their stats), I can't seem to see this info anywhere within my app though?

  • http://forum.dji.com/thread-38789-1-1.html

    >What cases, other than the official DJI one, are you guys using?

  • I am highly considering this one, but still need to make sure all the measurements line up. It looks like it would hold everything from a fly more package: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CF5OHZ2/

    >Photo settings, again anyone have a good combination for these?

  • I've had great results with stock settings. All editing would be post, anyway.

Going from a discovery to a Mavic, how ya like that left stick? LOL That's the hardest thing for me to get used to is not always controlling the throttle.

Fresh into getting into drones, I pick up my Mavic Pro from Target today after work. However, I have a couple hundred hours of experience with R/C flight with airplanes so I've got experience there. I'm flying out to Kauai on vacation tomorrow morning and will be learning all about the new toy while heading out to the island and hopefully be able to get good enough at it to capture some decent shots of the island.

My questions is regarding gymbal filters for the Mavic Pro. I anticipate I'll be in some pretty bright daylight conditions, do I need to pick up some gymbal filters? The very little looking I've done says PolarPro filters are what folks recommend.

Would this 6-pack cover everything I need? I don't know that I would be able to get these in time for my trip tomorrow morning unless I can find a camera shop that carries them.

How important are these filters?

Will I be able to get decent shots / footage without them and edit in post?

Which filters do I need or don't need. I live in Washington so overcast weather is very common. But would love to be able to shoot in direct sunlight and have good results also. Polarized? UV?

Cheers

I think if you go modular instead of all in one you'll be better off.

If you use something like the flymore case it is what it is, always having to pack around its dimensions. If you go modular you can put what you need where you need.

I got one of those hard shell cases that they sell on alibaba (but I got it for $1 more on amazon, as alibaba doesn't take PayPal and I don't trust them) so I can pick whether I want to pack lite or not. Think that would work great for you. There is one for the Mavic and one for the controller.

Edit:
Here's the link on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Hobby-Signal-Controller-Transmitter-Hardshell/dp/B01NB1Q06G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1488133239&sr=8-3&keywords=DJI+Mavic+case

Getting to the right pack for the Mavic for me has been like finding the right gun holster. Don't know if it's right till you buy a bunch! Started with the flymore case, then tried the water bottle molle case, then a cheap Pelican 1400, then got a nice Mountainsmith camera bag. Really liked the Mountainsmith bag but then I outgrew it a month later after a bunch of accessories started to show up :-)

I'm on the lowepro Tahoe BP 150 now, and I really like that one. I can fit the Mavic, batteries, ND filters, mavmount, VR goggles, 2 different sunshade hoods, lanyard, landing feet extensions, propellers, iPad mini, various cables, and a GoPro kit with some various mounts. I like to accessorize!

Thank you! Yeah I agree my gopro leans more towards the cooler side of the spectrum. The Osmo Action's on board stabilization is super cool to mess around with. Almost feels like it's on a gimble without the hassle of extra weight and size.

The selfie stick is this one

SOONSUN 3-in-1 Aluminum Telescoping Selfie Stick Monopod Pole Handheld Grip with Tripod Stand for GoPro Hero Fusion/7/6/5/4/3+/3/2018/Session, AKASO, SJCAM Cameras and Cell Phones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L3BWK5J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_DtUjDb0XZ8A32

And I also had a monopod for my dslr that I threaded into the selfie stick more reach

Manfrotto Element Aluminum 5-Section Monopod, Red (MMELEA5RD) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTLH408/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_StUjDb1Y1CXNG

Check out this video if you want some more info on video settings:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFQI5HLz6ek

I followed it and my videos looked a lot better afterwards. If you don't have video editing software and don't want to spend a lot of money on it, I use Shotcut (it's open source / free), and it works pretty well:

https://www.shotcut.org/

Also I think that video above mentions this, but using filters also improves picture quality when it's bright outside:

https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Pieces-Filter-Mavic-Quadcopter/dp/B07C9RMGRT/ref=sr_1_4?crid=QXXWHIXEQJ4U&keywords=dji+mavic+air+filters&qid=1563385846&s=gateway&sprefix=dji+mavic+air+filt%2Caps%2C194&sr=8-4

I usually use the "8" or "16" depending on how bright it is.

One last tip that's not related to picture quality: if you're landing the drone due to low battery (btw I recommend lowering the low battery warning from 30% to 20% -- this gives more than enough time to land and it delays the annoying warning beeps), and you're having trouble seeing/controlling the drone either because you can't physically see it well or aren't comfortable flying it by looking at the video feed, try using the map instead. The triangle is the drone and the green line points straight back to home, so all you have to do is rotate the drone until the triangle is pointing towards the green line, then fly straight until it's home (make sure it's high enough to avoid trees, etc.). There's one other related setting: by default the Home location is recorded when you take off, and it doesn't move. I can't remember the exact name of the setting but it should be obvious when you're looking through them. You can change it to something like "Follow" where the Home point will always follow the location of the controller, so if you move then the drone will always come home to you.

Anyway, enjoy your Air! There are a bunch of other YouTube videos on it that I found very useful to watch, in case you have more questions.

I used the remotepilot101.com website. At first, honestly, I thought it was a total rip off because of the price. However, I will note that the guy running the site is actively updating it and does promise to provide that $150 as a resource for as long as he is in business for your renewal memberships. In essence, you're paying a lifetime membership for his course for a certification you have to renew every two years.

He is very good at listening to feedback and his questions and courses were the most thorough I could find. However, his teaching style is of a type some people may not like. He repeats basic information, A LOT. Some people love that, other people hate it.

He also provides real time practical feedback via e-mail on his website which is nice. After considering the fact he responds to e-mail and the fact he keeps this up to date for life I feel it's worth the $150. If I had known those two things I would've felt better about paying it. I will, however, note that the weather section and the regulation section were a tiny bit lacking and I had to supplement them with this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1619544687/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Book which my test center proctor mentioned was a reputable test resource producer. The remotepilot101 guy did not explain the "pilots operating handbook" does not exist yet. He also did not explain squall lines and fronts to the detail the exam wanted, nor did he explain the procedure for entering an air traffic pattern from the pilot perspective.

I ended up with a 98% using both of these for about a week and a half.

I bought this range extender on Amazon for less than $20

It has performed very well over the last few months! The extender significantly increased my maximum range. It also has massively decreased the amount of "Strong Interference Detected" warnings that I receive when the phantom is well within its range. The build quality is good and it is easy to put back on to the antenna before every flight. Best accessory I bought for my Phantom 3 Standard.

If you're flying near maximum range, be very aware of which direction your controller is pointing. Turning the controller can cause it to immediately lose signal.

u/drdiddlegg · 2 pointsr/dji

I use a Think Tank Photo Airport Helipak. It is definitely one of the more expensive options, but I love being able to carry my P3P, GoPros + Accessories, DSLR + Extra Lens, etc.

It also works as a carry-on, so it is great for traveling with your equipment.

u/expansivevrts · 1 pointr/dji

Well if your budget is extensive, sure you can go that route. I find polar pro expensive for almost no reason. I am sure they are a quality and trusted brand but ND4-16 for almost 100 bucks does not seem worth it to me. If you can get the ND+PL combo, I would recommend that over just separate PL and NDs. Sometimes you can only get a PL lens but its so bright out that you have to raise your shutter pretty high which I don't think you should do. I got these and they work well, this is the .ca site fyi:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07MR69742/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But the company is a little sketch.

u/NearEarthOrbit · 1 pointr/dji

Probably doesn't need to be said but, be careful ! Always stand upwind so if it kicks up the bird will get blown away from you.

If it's very windy, probably better to just land on the ground and clean up later vs. risk your fingers. You can still hand-launch and get the shots with a clean lens. I like this thing.

This is what I use, Manfrotto MB BP-D1 DJI Professional Video Equipment Cases Drone Backpack (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017AED18Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_mqb1xbHDRMPV6

It's pricey but definitely worth it. Great craftsmanship and I can leave my props on while I go to my shooting locations. Highly recommended. 👍

u/BourbonFiber · 1 pointr/dji

I've had people talk to me (while I was flying) about their discomfort with and suspicion of drones, but it was always in kind of broad terms, not that they specifically objected to what I was doing at the time (and they usually came away with a greater appreciation for them).

This was the first time I've had someone approach with clearly hostile intent, and I feel like I could probably have handled it better.

I can't believe how small the Mavic folds down to. I'm keeping it in my backpack in one of these.

u/kuhcd · 3 pointsr/dji

I just snagged this a few weeks ago, taking it to Mexico next week: https://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-ViewPoint-BP250-Multi-Purpose-Backpack/dp/B014CKVZWU/ref=sr_1_3

It is pretty fuckin awesome. Mavic fits great in the smaller bag, with two batteries and controller in there. Can also take my laptop and kindle, and random other work stuff. I now have my Mavic with me at all times!

u/Gur814 · 1 pointr/dji

I bought [this set](http://www.Neewer.com/ 4 Pieces Filter Kit for DJI Mavic Pro Drone Quadcopter Includes: ND4, ND8, ND16 and ND32 Filter, Made of Multi Coated Waterproof Aluminum Alloy Frame Optical Glass (MC-16) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XYL8RW4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_5ns8AbQHZD7W0) for my Mavic Pro. They work well so far. The construction is definitely cheaper than the Polar Pro from what I understand but they fit my needs fine. I haven't had any problems with them and I'm happy with the quality for the price.

I have no idea if these work on the air.

u/parkerjh · 3 pointsr/dji

Prop Guards: There's lots of pros and cons. Frankly, I don't use them as I feel the cons far outweigh the pros. There's plenty of YouTube vids and Google hits if you want to see these reasons and then decide for yourself.

2nd battery is absolutely necessary. Who wants a 15 minute flight and then done? Especially if ever going to do real estate photography or the like. I have three and sometimes wish I had four.

Other accessories: I would absolutely buy some filters including ND for your lens is you want to get better photos and vids. THIS is a good set.

u/kadinshino · 1 pointr/dji

Ones for the mavic will fit the spark Signal booster

They boost the signal to help quality when flying within range of your bird of choice. Mavic or spark

u/yanknet23 · 1 pointr/dji

If you are asking about airport checks, i would suggest taking off the wings, store batteries in lipo packs, and keep everything in backpack- i bought one of these for my Mavic which i stored in my backpack-

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KN66QRQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I didn't fly anywhere that was populated. Definitely didn't attempt to fly around Hanoi. Ninh Binh had more open space and i kept it in range all the time.

You will have fun with the shots you'll get. Enjoy

u/Sliw · 3 pointsr/dji

This, the greatest carrying case for it by a mile:

Orca Tactical MOLLE H2O Water Bottle Pouch Hydration Carrier (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KN66QRQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_aigQ87ZUVQPJ2

It fits almost perfectly, hold everything and then some.

u/Mhinc · 2 pointsr/dji

I have gone through, literally, 6 OTG. They all work, but some were too small, some too big.
When I got my NVidia K1 Tablet. I went with this and I love it. It's perfect. Keep in mind this is amazon.ca

CableCreation Micro USB to Micro... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B076HGJGPK?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I am not seeing a lightning connector version.

u/vr6oom · 3 pointsr/dji

I use something like these for my phantom and they work well. I see a 20-30% distance increase with them on.

I use lens filters for my digital camera, I would look into seeing what you can use on a drone.

EDIT: Here is a video to explain it for drones. Just buy some off Amazon and test it out.

Cheapest Amazon filters I found:

u/thehackerattacker · 1 pointr/dji

Also, do products like these actually work? Would this solve my problem?

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/dji

There's not much you can do apart from getting closer, restarting or simply waiting. Sorry.

You could always buy parabolic reflectors that you could install as soon as you lose connection. These things make the signal very directional, increasing it as long as you point your antennas towards the RC. This is what I'm talking about, it only costs about 10 buck https://www.amazon.com/Threeking-Controller-Extender-Parabolic-Accessories/dp/B072HFCC2S
