To expand on The Wizard of Oz, they released it on Blu Ray in 2009 with an entirely new HD transfer from the original negatives, definitely give it go even if you already have the 2005 remaster! There's also a really big edition that even comes with a watch lol. The new DVD edition is just the 2005 remaster again though.
The Sound of Music has a really nice HD release too, but it was filmed on 70mm and in good condition, so they didn't have to do that much to make it look good. It's also got a bigger box set version, but no watch lol. Both have an incredible amount of special features. I can't really think of another musical release that was as big a deal as these two, but if I do I'll just edit this post.

My Fair Lady's DVD is great because it lets us hear Audrey's actual singing on a couple songs, I'm hoping they'll have it as an audio track option on the upcoming Blu Ray. Singin' in the Rain is getting a big release next year, and an anniversary edition of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory later this month, something to look forward to.

I don't know if these releases changed anything or not, but they're sure awesome editions. I kind of think the success of the Wizard of Oz big set inspired the Sound of Music, Willy Wonka, and other big sets, but I can't say for sure.

u/beertastic · 7 pointsr/dvdcollection

They look crazy good. So much better than what you are most likely expecting. But more importantly, they sound great too. If you've ever watched these back in the day on TV or DVD or Netflix, etc. they have a very heavy hiss in the audio track. There is very little hiss on these. To me that makes the world of difference, more so than the video.

I feel like I'm over selling it, keep expectations in check for 1930's movies, but given the age of these they look and sound great. Some look better than others, but well worth the upgrade over DVD imo. It's like $23 or something shipped to the US. Do it, Halloween is approaching.

u/CorneliusCardew · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

Yeah I transfer them myself.

I buy these:

https://smile.amazon.com/Plastic-Sleeves-Non-Woven-sleeves-StarTechDeals/dp/B014Q8XTZE/ref=pd_bxgy_3/142-6081281-7259919?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B014Q8XTZE&pd_rd_r=d50c8b42-5d1e-422c-8cc3-90db649edec6&pd_rd_w=FM49M&pd_rd_wg=nqI3W&pf_rd_p=a2006322-0bc0-4db9-a08e-d168c18ce6f0&pf_rd_r=FV64X32MDRTK6NVBNGVW&psc=1&refRID=FV64X32MDRTK6NVBNGVW

If you have a 3/4 disc set, two inserts and cover art will fit in one sleeve.

The initial transfer will take you a long time but after that it's not too bad to do as you go.

Pros: the space saving and ease of accessing your movies is immeasurably easier. I live in a small apartment and didn't want to have this hobby take over the space or to have to stop collecting so this was my only option and I've been happy.

Cons: They look fine but don't display well on a shelf so I would recommend switching to a box system where they are stored away. If you like displaying your collection, I don't think you'll be happy with this method.

u/rib_eye_b · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

I don't own the 4k release yet but I'm pretty sure it has all the bonus material that is included with this set.

Edit: According to DVDcompare.net the best choice is the UK 4k Special Edition which includes all five cuts of the films and the additional extras (including the "All Our Variant Futures" documentary) as well as the final cut in 4k.

u/Gigafrost · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

Almost forgot about this! I should be about 1.5 hours before deadline?

Picture

Since I don't have access to my whole collection I can't take a picture of all the rare stuff I'd prefer but these will do.

MS Gundam Igloo DVD 1 is rare simply because the copy I have now is the only one I've ever seen. There's two potential pages it could be listed on Amazon: here and here. I've also searched for this one via Google Shopping and E-Bay. The only reason I was sure it actually existed was because Chris Beveridge lists it in his collection.

The Garden of Sinners blu-ray box is next. It's easy to find but expensive. (Some even higher prices in Japan...)

Finally, I added One Piece Season 2 Fifth Voyage because I've been asked about it a couple times. Apparently, unlike the other One Piece collections, this one has become pretty expensive. (The prices outside of Amazon are comparable.) It's much like Dragon Box 2 which I was talking about briefly with df619 in another topic.

I probably could have included Megamant NT Warrior DVDs 7 (not in stock) and 8 ($100) but decided not to for whatever reason.

With my entire collection I would have included Pokemon DVD 47, Dragon Box 2, and Maison Ikkoku Set 8. Maybe more but those are what come to mind at the moment.

u/awesomeness0232 · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

This is the region free player I have. It's a pretty popular one and works well. It can be bought cheaper on different sites but I'm not sure exactly where, maybe someone else can help out with that. Generally you can't get them for as cheap as your basic bare bones player.

No, they are not illegal to my knowledge. They advertise blu ray players as "region free" on Amazon sometimes. As far as websites, you can always just go to the Amazon page for the specific country or find distributors you like in other countries and buy directly from them if they ship internationally.

u/gecko5313 · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

Another option, instead of a binder, is using these plastic holders: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014Q8XTZE?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
You can put them in these storage boxes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005XXGT7C?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

I have easily 200 movies per box and it also lets me save the artwork and inserts from the DVD case. I also have a binder, but I like being able to save the original covers easily.

I believe these are on sale till July 6th 11:59 PST. Check the series out during the 4th of July marathon on the Sy-Fy channel. It's a great deal for all 156 episodes as well as special features. There is a great extra of Rod Serling on the "Tell it to Groucho" show with Groucho Marx. Well worth the price admission.

Oops. I misunderstood what specific editions you were talking about. I read your original post as the Masterpiece Collection and the CLASSIC Collection. The Essentials Collection contains identical remasters of a few of the films in the Masterpiece mastered by the same team. That being said. You NEED the Masterpiece Collection. And the Classic Collection fills in a few important gaps:

  • Where do you live now? North Carolina
  • What is your favorite genre? I like films regardless of genre, but based on my collection, I'd say comedy.
  • First DVD I ever bought: I can't remember the first DVD I bought, but the first DVD I ever owned was Gladiator. It was a Christmas gift.
  • My guilty pleasure movie is: Out of the ones I own, The Return of the Living Dead, but I can't really say I have any guilt.
  • My least favorite movie I own is: That's a tough one. Probably GoodFellas but only because I have to flip the disc to watch the whole movie. I love the film and need to upgrade it.
  • My favorite director: It's a toss-up between Martin Scorsese, Sergio Leone, and John Landis
  • What I'm most proud of: My Twilight Zone Complete Definitive Collection
  • What I'm looking for: More money and better pawn shops in my area. ;) I'm not really looking for anything that is hard to find (a "holy grail).
  • Software/app I use to keep track: I use Delicious Library 2. It's sorting options aren't without flaws, but I love being able to scan the UPC on my movies and them being entered automatically. You can see my library here.

My collection doesn't include iTunes Store purchases, but it would only add a few films anyway. I can't really call myself a DVD/Blu-Ray collector, I just acquire things here and there. I bought most of the films for myself, but I sometimes buy DVDs for others and they get "left" to me, as you can see.

    Edit: Removed an extra "I"

Nice collection and welcome to the subreddit!
Alfred Hitchcock blu-ray collection releases next month, and as far as Disney movies go the Disney Movie Club is pretty awesome

u/bongobill9821 · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

As everyone has already said, I highly doubt there is a dedicated site for collector's editions, but as Kirah has pointed out with her examples, you're best best is to find them on amazon, for most of them anyway.

I technically only own two. I say technically because I have the Spider-Man 2 Limited Collector's Edition, but also I have the Willy Wonka set coming in soon, but don't have it on me.

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009GGC4B2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1404441253&sr=8-1

I bought a pack of those a while back for $15 and I've been happy. I'd gladly buy them again, especially with the lower price they've got now. They seem sturdy enough, they've got embossed Blu-ray logos on the front. There's a review complaining about covers not fitting but I've not run into that, mine all fit perfect. They do have areas on the front and back that use thinner plastic but that doesn't bother me, still better than the retail cases with the holes cut in them.

u/dustin_slothman · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

Ah wow! So is the 2004 worth having at all? Whats on the bonus disc? Are any of these worth checking out? There's a couple dozen different options

u/hoverboarder · 3 pointsr/dvdcollection

Just bought this shelf and really happy with it. Tedious to build, but holds SO MUCH. Great price too.

u/949paintball · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

Here is the link, if you want to buy it. I have the collection and it's pretty awesome. Expensive, but awesome.

u/moiax · 4 pointsr/dvdcollection

I think Aniplex stuff in general has always held it's value pretty well. They at least tend to take the 'Limited' thing pretty seriously. Not only that, but Bakemonogatari is an incredibly popular series so it may be worth it.

Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection

Fantastic box set. It's the US version hansorg has. The UK and Australian version comes in a fold-out digipack style case.

u/Duals902 · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

DO WANT!

Also this link is probably more friendly for users. Plus if people preorder this set through that link money is generated for gift cards that go back to the subreddit each month.

u/FuneralDog · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

Dude, this hurts. You gotta invest in somethin'. There are some decent media shelf options for, like, $30 on Amazon. I've got a couple of these, and they do the job pretty well.

u/Z0MBGiEF · 4 pointsr/dvdcollection

For those interested in the stand, I picked up a set of 6 on Amazon for $9.99. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XSJ2VCN/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The stands are awesome, they are adjustable, it will accommodate different sizes as needed so it will even work on larger cases.

I definitely recommend it so far. Stores a ton without breaking the bank. We're living with my folks, so we only have so much room to work with. But we'll definitely invest in one or two more of these once we finally move into a new house!

u/LegendarySpark · 3 pointsr/dvdcollection

I thought it was a worldwide release but it appears to be UK only. But it's region free and Zavvi charges pretty much nothing for shipping so still worth checking out.

I got it from amazon. Here is the link if you are interested. It does a pretty good job of handling weight, the only problem I really have is the top shelf of my left one, but I have one too many steelbooks on it haha.

u/BlueVelvetUndrground · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

Even if you get the standard version without all the bells and whistles, the artwork is a lot better on the region free version than the Region 1 version, even if it does come out a week later. I want this a lot.

u/oneofthesevendwarves · 7 pointsr/dvdcollection

https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B008RLD1VY This is the best set, specifically the UK version because it's often FAR cheaper than the American set. Also, it's region free so you should have no issues. It's missing North By Northwest, but even buying this set and North By Northwest at full price would save you money.

u/Panabag · 3 pointsr/dvdcollection

I'm not too adventurous unless it concerns things I love. But it would be something to put on the "mantelpiece". Although I am willing to go all out for something with swag, the most "swagtastic" thing I've boughten was a gift to my father.

Damn, I traded that version to my brother for this version. Looks like he got the best of me on that deal, just from a dollar value perspective.

u/DrDoak · 3 pointsr/dvdcollection

Well, I detailed what's in the Blu ray set here I know that there are other versions where Lucas has altered parts of the original trilogy about 3 times now... I guess it depends on which one you might want. I have this version which adds some changes that were made on a third VHS release about 11 or 12 years ago. There's also this version but I honestly don't know much about it.

I finally picked up the Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection thanks to it currently being on sale on Amazon. Now I need to sale my Alfred Hitchcock: The Essentials Collection. I have it up on eBay right now for $30. If any one is interested just shoot me a message.

The Island of Lost Souls steelbook and Shogun Assassin through one of Eureka's flash sales a few weeks ago. I made an error with the title. The Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray is from Zavvi's Buy One Get One Free Disney sale. I also picked up Fantasia, but they shipped them separately.

Off of Amazon. It was something similar to this:

Sauder 409110 Multimedia Storage Tower, L: 32.44" x W: 9.41" x H: 45.35", Cinnamon Cherry finish https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002RRH23W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZnprDbGDHW3MX

u/AstorReinhardt · 1 pointr/dvdcollection

I used to store them in boxes/tubs on top and under my entertainment cabinet...but I ran out of room lol.

Getting rid of nearly half of my collection because of the space issue...I'm going to dump the stuff I never watched/just didn't enjoy and upgrade to blu rays the stuff I love. I'm not sure on storage. I have plans for some sort of shelving unit but not sure which.

Leaning towards https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KW0BDI/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_63?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER because it seems to be able to hold around 600 standard blu ray cases.

If I limit myself on what movies I want to own...I should be able to fill that up and call it good.

I will be cheating some and putting my big box collections/steelbooks somewhere else. I'll also be getting multipacks of movies in one case. So a whole series of movies in a single case pretty much. Cuts down on space taken up drastically.

u/CaptainGibb · 2 pointsr/dvdcollection

Buy the UK Masterpiece collection, its a LOT cheaper than the US version.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Alfred-Hitchcock-Masterpiece-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B008RLD1VY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=hitchcock+blu+ray&qid=1566590440&s=gateway&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&sr=8-1

Then get this set as a companion, it has 3 important films missing from the set

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Alfred-Hitchcock-Collection-Northwest-Strangers/dp/B006LMILRK/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=hitchcock+blu+ray&qid=1566590569&s=gateway&sr=8-5

They fit dvd's nicely, and take up minimal space. It can be a pain though if you need to file something that starts with a number or early alphabet and you have to take out section after section to rearrange everything else. Still, for the convenience of not building something myself and space I like em.

Strangely cheaper than the 6 film edition

Remember the set might go out of print eventually. If it does, and if you're unlucky, the used prices on these things can get ridiculous. Like right now the Friday the 13th Series set on blu ray goes for over 300 used on amazon. I'm a classic and modern horror nut so this makes me want to rise from the dead to take vengeance on my enemies.

You can buy the additional more complete series as they come out, and if they all are announced with release dates, you might be able to sell it used for more than you originally bought it.
