>Don't you often celebrate your love for people who have a little good and a lot of bad in them?

Well, no, not really. If they have only a little good but a lot of bad then there's not much to celebrate. I hate to risk Godwinating myself, but they say even Hitler loved dogs and children. The question is how much good and how much bad has the US caused, and at what scales? That is probably not possible to reasonably measure now. Maybe 100 years from now, if any of the transhumans remember what the US was, then we can take a dispassionate look at the historical situation and see how it all worked out.

>it's possible to love it for the good while still hating the bad

Fair enough, but there is no mention in the song of the bad, only the good. I need to have God Bless the USA coming in one ear, and People of the Sun or something coming in the other. :-D

As far as my ambivalent feelings go, that's just the way I feel. I've traveled a fair amount in Europe as well as the US, and it is always a relief to get home. But on the other hand even when I lived in New Jersey, it was never "home" to me, even though it was in America. And I felt a lot more alienated when I was in the deep south than when I was in Germany, say.

A lot of my ambivalence stems from reading books like The Politics of Heroin and A People's History of the United States, and general background reading I've done on stuff like the firebombing of Tokyo and the Banana Wars, etc. Ah I said I wasn't going to go tit-for-tat here, sorry, I'll leave it at that. Anyway, loving America in a realistic way seems to me like what it must be like to have a close family member who beat you as a child or something (maybe not quite that extreme, but you get the picture). It's a complicated kind of love, with a lot of caveats, and to express only the love and not expressing the other part makes me feel a little weird.

Thanks for sticking around and having a civil conversation about this though, it's an interesting subject to talk about.

How about music that shouldn't be pay to download, i.e. music that has been around for 100s of years?

On another note most of the music I like is nigh impossible to find to buy. Basically I can download it or I can buy it from a website where I have no assurance that any of the money -- usually an outrageous amount for import CDs -- actually goes to a particular artist, that is if they have the artist at all. Sure there are alternative means like getting an itunes Japan/other country card, (there still is the language barrier to deal with) or waiting until a domestic version is released, which will never happen for most bands/artists, or even from certain people who bring imports over to sell at conventions, none of which are in a relatively close distance.

Even if I import music I have to worry that it won't play on my computer, some Japanese CDs have "we must contact a server in Japan" DRM and other such silliness, or even customs confiscating my package.

Sure it's easy for you folks that enjoy domestic music, or just music in English, you can just get online to some place that is easy to navigate and find what you want, however for me most of the time it is difficult to find music I want to download, let alone buy.

Sure, if music I wanted was readily available in a easy to access way to buy, I would do it, but it isn't so I'm not going to go through the rigmarole and inflated import prices just to make myself feel better about burning a hole in my pocket.

Now, some foreign artists have had releases over here and I've bought them in order to support more coming over, but they are few and far between, also itunes US does have some music from places that I might enjoy, but not in the sheer quantity I can find on the internet.

I have only bought things that I have already listened to and enjoyed, I figure that is the way most buy music, and until there is a radio station with music I would enjoy listening to I will still download just to get a preview and see if I enjoy it enough to buy.

Just as a few examples:
This is a relatively cheap import. That is from an older band and most of the newer CD imports are a bit more pricey, like here, here, and here.

Well like I said starting small is really the best way. Try doing one vegetarian meal a week, which will give you the opportunity to try new recipes, so you can start learning new flavors, without being overwhelming trying to do it every night.

Italian or Chinese noodles would be a great place to start!

You can always do a pasta with veggies and marinara sauce. Even with just jarred sauce you can bulk it out a bunch by sauteing fresh onions, garlic, carrots, peppers, zucchinis, mushrooms in a pot, then add the sauce and simmer them for 10 minutes before adding the cooked pasta.

Chinese is also a good starting point. Many Chinese restaurants will have all the same sauces and veggie combos available with fried tofu instead of meat. Or at home you can buy bags of frozen stir fry vegetables. Stir fry with garlic and ginger and some chow mein noodles and finish with soy sauce for a super simple dish to make at home.

The beans/lentils are good for protein which is why they're so common if you're really going full vegetarian, but if you just want to try starting vegetarian cooking one night a week then don't worry about it, you'll get plenty of protein the rest of the week. If you want to some you can try a vegetarian bean chili for a familiar flavor profile (unless you're from Texas and find this to be blasphemy lol). Here's a recipe, this whole blog is all vegetarian recipes as well: https://cookieandkate.com/2015/vegetarian-chili-recipe/

If you want to you can try putting 1/2 cup of dried red lentils into the marinara and veggie sauce and simmering for 20 minutes. It will look a bit like a pseudo bolognese. Also if you want to start branching out and your grocery store doesn't have things you want to try, like bulk beans or spices or sauces, you can always order things off good ol' Amazon, such as https://www.amazon.com/Arrowhead-Mills-Organic-Lentils-Packaging/dp/B00CLATJMW/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1541553946&sr=8-4&keywords=red+lentils

I don't have cable but I was checking out the free videos on Amazon and came across the first two episodes (so if you want to know what it is like, check it out at your leisure). I was hooked from the start. It is a little slow at times but the cinematography is really good and the tone of the show is very interesting. They don't rush to drop details and clues on you and you get a wider sense of how the events unfold/impact the various characters.

Overall I would say that I really like it. I wish I had waited to discover it until the season was already complete - I am having a hard waiting for the next episodes to air :)

I visited Paris two years ago and since hearing how hip-hop was done over the ocean, I've all but given up on American hip-hop.

I personally am particular to Marseille groups. IAM is an outstanding group. Saison 5, their latest album, is absolutely fantastic. Fonky Family and 3ème Oeil are also outstanding.

Sniper and MC Solaar are also fantastic.

I will say, while Sinik, Booba, Rohff are more of the same 'thug rap', it sounds a lot better than anything produced in the last five years in the U.S. ("Mauvais garçon", "le duc", "TDSI" come to mind).

To anyone interested in this movie, you might want to check out In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan:

Also, Iowa's DNR Director Rich Leopold has some great ideas when it comes to ethanol and crop alternatives. Please don't think that we're complacent about our situation.

p.s. southern Iowa is a pretty good model for small farms, let's hope they're able to keep it up. Support your local farmers market!

That's weird. Do you have the '1-click' buying or whatever they call it turned on? If you do, maybe try turning that off.

If you purchased it by accident and haven't watched it they should give you your money back.

FWIW, it's $1.99/episode for SD and $2.99 for HD. If you do the 'TV Pass' option (buying the whole season and Amazon auto-charges you for each episode once it's released) you save 5% per episode.

Amazon VOD isn't perfect, but I think it's the best alternative to the apple ecosystem. It integrates perfectly with the Roku boxes etc, and also works great (in the browser) on both macs and windows machines.

It reminded me a lot of 'ghosts I'(I never got to hear the other 'ghosts'). Maybe a bastard child of 'Ghosts I' and 'Broken'? Personally; I could have sworn there's a touch of 0304 in there somewhere, but I could be mistaken there, and I'll need more listens to be sure.

I can tell that even these speakers, which are the best I have access to, don't do it justice, though. Mind you, while there's some interesting soundscaping going on, it's nothing earth-shattering. It's fast, cheap, and it's there when you need it. It would probably fit right in my playlist, and more importantly, would serve as great material to put with your existing NIN collection, to keep you from getting stuck in a rut listening to 'The Fragile' on loop for the rest of your life if trent were to suddenly get hit by a CIA-hijacked airplane or something.

"Letting you"; I mean, I can stand listening to it, but it's just not up to normal NIN standards. ymmv.

"Lights in the sky" is very quiet on my setup, I know large dynamic range blah blah, still, I could have inserted silence in it's place and wouldn't have changed much.

Corona Radiata - The Four of Us are Dying
work together in a similar way to the last two or three tracks on 'With Teeth', in the 'Let's screw with our headspace a little, and then bring things up to a nice, tight, close' -- although they aren't as powerful/together, at least on this setup. Maybe, however they just aren't obviously as good, and there's something else at play that I haven't heard in my 3 or so listens so far.

It's hard to pin down these sorts of things, so apologies for almost intentional vagueness.

If you were bored with Ghosts, you may, or may not want to avoid this one. I'm not sure. But definitely go see the tour if it comes near you, since the stuff in 'The Slip' will probably add to that

edit I should note, that I don't actually 'get' lyrics, so if you normally listen to lyrics when you listen to NIN without straining yourself in order to do so, your experience will differ from mine.

Right. So. Always Sunny is higher-rated on the following sites:

  • IMDB
  • Metacritic
  • TV.com
  • TVRage
  • Amazon.com
  • Amazon.co.uk

Of course, smaller sample sizes are actually advantageous. A few high scores have a large impact on the average and the people who vote are more likely to be fans. Larger sample sizes tend to even out the score as a single enthusiastic fan has much less of an impact on the average.

Oh, and while I was searching I saw Flight of the Conchords pop up in a list of recommendations. Somehow I'd completely forgotten about that show, even though I have the DVD case just a few feet from me. That's also a superior show.

edit: I also checked Netflix. After 27,971 ratings Peep Show has 3.9 stars (out of 5). It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia has 4.3 stars after 533,560 ratings.

It's also higher rated on Hulu, and I honestly can't think of any more sites that can be checked.

Have you watched it?

I haven't, but I plan to because the trailers look interesting, and I've learned to ignore the critic gangbanging of popular films that seems to run rampant on the internet. If I listened to the reviews on imdb or rotten tomatoes, I would have missed out on some of the best movies in my collection. I'm not going to jump on the bashing train until I see it and develop my own opinions.

Aside: For anyone who is interested in trying something they may not have seen at their local blockbuster, I enjoyed Dead Birds.

I had a modest portfolio that was guided by a traditional broker. He lost money for me every year. So finally I figured out that if he could lose my money, so could I and I started picking my own investments. I've never looked back.

The trick to making good investments is to make small investments at first. Get used to losing a little money. It's important that you don't get spooked after your fist 10% loss... or even your first 50% loss. I usually buy a small amount of a stock that I like and I'll buy more if I still like it later. Especially if the price goes down and I still believe in the company. The best time to buy is usually when everyone is selling.

A great way to get started "buying stocks" is to buy them with no money - Sign up for a free portfolio tracker at Yahoo finance or Marketwatch. It's free. You can add stocks with phantom purchases and "buy and sell" to your hearts content. After a couple weeks, you can see if you like it. Spend a few months doing this, you'll eventually get the hang of it. Use real investment amounts that you might make.

When you do finally decide to invest, make sure to only invest what you can afford to lose and you'll be ok.

Oh... BTW. These are great books. I'd buy and them before you start. They won't teach you how to invest, but they will show you the psychology behind investing, which I think is more important.

Not that much it looks like actually. This is the camera he's using:

Lumix DMC-Gf1: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/330756766170
And this is the lense: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-14-45mm-3-5-5-6-O-I-S-Thirds/dp/B002IKLJV4

B and H Photo has a sold out set for both of those together, but can't view the price. He probably paid 550 tops for it and is doing some interesting things in my opinion.

EDIT: Also, his site/Tumblr is much nicer to scroll through than this shitty linkbait photo gallery: http://terrysdiary.com/

READ THIS BOOK - it is one of the best books I've ever read. Just amazing vision and scope. I had no idea they were making it into a movie. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.

By far mostly non-violent, in fact.

Have a read of this book: https://www.amazon.com/Divide-American-Injustice-Age-Wealth/dp/081299342X

The USA truly does have a two tier justice system at the moment, worse than in the recent past.
