The Vargas 'Faceting for Amateurs' is kind of dated now. A much better and up-to-date book is Amateur Gemstone Faceting It not only tells how to faccet, but there is a lot of info on what to look for in a machine, what tolls are needed, etc.

The Vargas 'Diagrams for Faceting', however are very good. I recently found all three for about $60, but they are very hard to find for a fair price.

An excellent source for modern designs is The United States Faceters Guild site.

The Gemology Project Has photos of the finished gems as well as diagrams.
