Oh, I felt myself getting angrier as I read thru this, perhaps as a professional and boss in an allied field If I had overheard this I would have fired her on the spot, and publicly, too. What she said and more importantly, what she did was absolutely positively totally unacceptable under any and all circumstances. It was at best, mean, and at worst, elder abuse. If anything, I think you handled yourself with tact, class and grace..and furthermore, you could have not only kicked it (and her!) up a notch or two, but then taken it to DDL's supervisor, which I would strongly encourage you to do so. Then, I'd like to offer you a job. I pay very well, too.

It's hard getting old and losing what you had as it indicates at some point there will be nothing left to lose which is the terrifying part. The people charged with understanding and being sensitive to and supportive of that should do so, there is ever and acceptable level of teasing.

As someone who has awful family all I can offer is a hug. I am so sorry you are going through this. You can offer your mom advice to not enable their bad behavior. You can love someone and significantly distance yourself for your own sanity. They are all adults and have to make their own life choices. I highly advise reading this book it was life changing for me:

Don't "pick up the gauntlet" is a phrase that a counselor told me on how to deal with my bi-polar mother. If I accept her emotional weight and her challenge then she's won.
If she is upset that a chair is crooked your friend can say something like "I understand you're frustrated with the crooked chair, that must be a difficult situation." - this way she's not apologizing for something that makes absolutely no difference in a normal persons world view and she can acknowledge her mothers frustration without being a punching bag.
I'm no expert, but that simple tactic has worked okay a few times for me. I remember buying this book for my brother a while back. I'm considering buying another copy for myself, might be helpful.
