Personal opinion, buying a gaming laptop for XI is all kinds of overkill. The game is from 2003ish and doesn't need anywhere near that kind of power, even with what updates it has gotten over the years.. That said, you did say you're planning to return it.

XI is very playable on the integrated graphics. If you really want to play XI, and only intend to play that on the laptop, I would just get a weaker laptop for a fraction of the cost(with the intent to play on integrated graphics), and put the rest of your money towards something else you want.

When I do play on my laptop, I play it on Intel HD 5500 and get decent frame-rates. I do turn a few things down in settings so I can bump up the game's resolution, but the game is still completely enjoyable.

If you do want to play it on the GPU... just about every laptop that is coming out at the moment uses a Nvidia GPU. There are a handful of AMD GPU machines out there, and one of those should be able to play the game as they just use the AMD GPU (as far as I know) and don't switch between it and integrated. AMD is supposed to be releasing new laptops later this year with their new Ryzen CPU line and updated GPU's in them as well.

You may also want to check your local classifieds and craigslist as well just to get something to play the game. Personally I would get a cheap option, and then wait for the AMD Ryzen ones if you want a modern gaming laptop. Otherwise, find something like these:

It's not a modern gaming laptop by any means, but it should run FFXI like a champ. I can't vouch for any of the machines, but I ordered them getting sequentially weaker and less expensive.

The biggest challenge you're going to face is understanding character and gear diversity. This is a text-based game so there's a lot of typing out commands and making sure you're timing you're macros correctly etc etc.

In WoW you have one toon that wears one piece of equipment per slot while playing one class for the entirety of their duration. In XI you're going to have one character that can play every job with dozens of pieces of equipment for each slot (and you'll find the more jobs you enjoy, the more that gear just starts to pile up). You'll be doing lots of gear changes to optimize your attack speed, your weaponskill strength, and various job abilities - and those would just be the basics for melee jobs.

You're going to want the original game plus all the expansions and mini-expansions. You're going to want to find an Ultimate Collection Seeker's Edition... this can probably be found cheaper somewhere I'm sure. Monthy sub is $12.95 for 1 character, tack on an extra $1 for additional characters.

I have some friends who will be joining up in the next couple of weeks on the Bahamut server. I'll be going through aaaaalll the old content and getting them up to speed. Let me know if you'd be interested!

HP Elite Desktop Computer, Intel Core i5 3.1GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB SATA HDD, Keyboard & Mouse, Wi-Fi, Dual 19in LCD Monitors (Brands Vary), DVD-ROM, Windows 10, (Renewed) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P14TFWJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ddpYDbSNBM62K

I bought this one to play at work when I didn't have customers, like I say, it plays ffxi, just not well. I plan on buying a slim gpu to add to it later, but right now I've just been lugging my Alienware A51m back-and-forth to work since it's my main rig now.

The one you originally posted seems fine but I would pair it with a cheap, low form factor gpu so your playtime will be more enjoyable. Playing with 5-19fps drove me crazy after a few hours.

EDIT: Something like this card added to either the PC your looking at or the PC I bought would be perfect for FFXI, I'm sure they would run FFXI @ a solid 30FPS.

MSI Gaming GeForce GT 710 2GB GDRR3 64-bit HDCP Support DirectX 12 OpenGL 4.5 Single Fan Low Profile Graphics Card (GT 710 2GD3 LP) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DOFD0G8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_lxpYDbNM041CK

Literally anything with a dedicated graphics card will work. (If the only GPU is an Intel GPU, don't buy it. Nvidia or AMD GPU only.)

Unfortunately, the really cheap PC market is dominated by the two worst players in the industry: HP & Lenovo. HP's consumer level computers use low-end components and usually break down within a year or two tops, and Lenovo has literally been caught (multiple times) selling PCs with pre-installed spyware and adware on them.

So if you want something for less than $500 you're mostly going to be faced with a list of HP & Lenovo machines.

If I were you, I'd probably just try to find a good deal on a low-end Dell, Acer, Asus, or something like that. This one looks like a pretty good deal. I also like Wyrmnax's idea of trying to find a used one.

  1. Yes, FFXI was designed for the PS2 so a controller works fantastic in the game.

  2. Yes

  3. Yes, each year it becomes more solo friendly. Trust NPCs are the newest addition.

  4. Both?

  5. Yep. It's looking like an influx of players right now around the Trust system and fixing myth weapons to be upgradable.

  6. You're looking for this: http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-Ultimate-Collection-Seekers-Edition/dp/B00B23MODA

It's likely no longer published because of the low number of 360 players. Try getting a copy from someone you know, or used. You need the discs I think, but you can buy a PC copy for the CD keys.

Now that said... I would never recommend the 360 or PS2 version to a friend. If you literally don't have a PC, the $100 you're thinking about spending could go to a new one.

Anyone have experience running this game on an Intel Compute stick? Something like this : https://www.amazon.com/W5-Windows-Computer-1-83GHz-Bluetooth/dp/B06WWKY426

I know the CPU/GPU aren't great, but considering this is a 15 year old game, I'm assuming it would be passable? Looking for a cheap/portable solution for the holiday weekend. Thanks.

u/Nightroad1 · 1 pointr/ffxi

If you are looking to get all the newer expansions, check this link out.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AWEMODK?cache=685d2dc8f960c5cbee78fd12e6bb3d44&pi=SX200_QL40&qid=1407822953&sr=8-1#ref=mp_s_a_1_1

You can just add the code to your current account to unlock everything. That's what I did. It also give two bonus items that help with lvling pre 30. And if you want to wait and make sure you will still enjoy FFXI as is, you can hold off and maybe catch the collection on sale. I was able to get it when it was $12.

u/eberehting · 1 pointr/ffxi

How cheap is cheap?

Can't really provide good links without a price range, but I can give you a bit of important advice:

Get something with an AMD/ATI card, do NOT get a laptop with an nVidia card for FFXI. nVidia cards don't support the older directx that ffxi uses, so you'll have to either run it on the onboard graphics or use something like dgvoodoo to force it to run on the nvidia and then there's still conversion issues.

This seems like a decent option, but at 4gigs of ram you're definitely not going to want to have it multitasking much: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-80XV009CUS-A9-9420-AMD-GRAPHICS/dp/B0772VN88B

I used something along the lines of this guide:

http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/1l21zb/playing_with_a_ps3_controller_on_pc_a_setup_guide/

But now I just use a controller that I bought off of Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/HORI-PlayStation-Gem-Pad-Sapphire-3/dp/B00EOI2MRS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407247762&sr=8-1&keywords=hori+gem+3

I didn't have to install any drivers or run any software for it to work with my computer. Not sure if that was because I had the stuff from the old method or what. It's a pretty inexpensive controller and definitely is my favorite (you can turn the lights off if you don't like them, its in the manual. :D)

u/pizzapal84 · 1 pointr/ffxi

I got this one:

ASUS TUF Thin & Light Gaming... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BP9QG2J?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Works great. I triple box FFXI as well as run CAD software simultaneously.

Can purchase it via Amazon & Steam, at the very least. There is a monthly subscription and it's $11.95 then $1.00 per each character and another $2.00/ea. for Wardrobe 3 & 4*.

(*There are 4 Wardrobes in all, the first two you can get by linking a security token - hardware or software (Android or iPhone - excuse the lack of link for the iPhone version) - to your Square Enix account, which you should totally have anyway.)

Is it worth it? Hell yeah, I'd say so after having returned in June when I was gone for years. (You could always try a private server, although I know nothing about them and I plan to keep it that way since while I loved the ToAU-WotG era myself, I love how the game is now.)

u/Birkin07 · 1 pointr/ffxi

Just a suggestion. If you play on a laptop from a couch or a comfy chair, consider this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0097GMHXG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I just replaced my old stand with it, and it’s perfect.

u/Pikagreg · 2 pointsr/ffxi

I bought my copy from Amazon Japan. They ship to the US and always pack their BD's well. I originally picked it up as a "Priceless Remembrance" to the game I played for 10 years and then ended up playing again.

https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B014HZSQV8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You also get a code you can use for a rainbow mog pell, gold mog pell and 5 green mog pells if I remember correctly also.

u/woried · 6 pointsr/ffxi

The last "ultimate collection" was Seekers of Adoulin, and was only available as a physical copy for XB360 for $200 USD.

I've searched for as many of the game boxes as I could on Amazon, you might find them at your local game store. Hope this helps get you started.

PS2 controller via a Super JoyBox 5 Pro. Mouse should absolutely not be used with this game. It is keyboard-only or controller+keyboard, and if you set keyboard in-game to Compact, you can customize your controls.

FFXI launched on Steam with the Abyssea Collection, which had the first 4 expansions and all 6 add-ons. Seekers Collection updated later, and is automatically half price for anyone with the Abyssea Collection on their account. There was no edition on Steam that just went to Shantotto Ascension.

I play it from time to time on the xbox, usually when I just can't stand sitting in my office chair and I want to play on a bigger screen. The only real downside I have to it, other than some issues I have with a keyboard I have to hook up to the 360, is that the initial load-time from POL to the FFXI client takes a bit longer than I would like. The other issue would be that some people might be used to pressing the xbox button in the middle of the controller to go back to the dashboard. That's a big no-no with ffxi. I haven't done that myself but I heard it can f-up the install on your 360, and I find that it takes ages to install and update for some reason compared to the PC.

If you happen to live in Canada, you can get it from here for about 17 dollars or so.

I was going to make a complaint about how I'm not using the 360 version primarily because all of my macros are on my PC and it would be a headache to type it all back into the 360 version but as I was writing that as a negative, I actually googled it and what do you know, You can save your macros to playonline's servers and restore them to a different platform.

This. changes. everything.

$30 for all: http://www.amazon.com/FANTASY-Ultimate-Collection-Seekers-Download/dp/B00AWEMODK

Or you can wait for a sale on Amazon or whatever. It has gone as low as $9 before, but has dropped twice to $20. http://camelcamelcamel.com/FANTASY-Ultimate-Collection-Seekers-Download/product/B00AWEMODK?context=browse

Probably can get it on sale on Steam cheaper and more often. https://isthereanydeal.com/#/page:game/price?plain=finalfantasyxiultimatecollectionseekersedition (looks like you missed a sale for $9 by 9 days)
