That's the most common to use. Punk is a wood based stick, a lot like incense. It works faster because something is actually burning.
I would try a different USB to Serial Cable. There are some cheap ones with converter chips that are not very good. I have this cable that I use for more finicky stuff and it works really well.

Highly recommend the Dottie 15- in 1, if you're going to be working in this field any length of time, it will be essential to fire alarm, cameras, access control, and other fields.
