Making Things Move: Actionscript 3.0 Animation by Keith Peters was the most fun instructional book I've ever read. Seriously. As in, I'd read it on the subway just for kicks, because the tone was so friggin delightful. It's designed for both novice AS3 coders and AS2 old hats. They have it used on Amazon for like $2.

If you have Java experience you should consider learning ActionScript 3, since it is very similar to Java. If I remember correctly, Flash 8 only has AS2, which is more like JavaScript syntax.

If you are strapped for cash, there are some cheap/free tools out there for AS3 development such as FlashDevelop.

Depending on whether you go with AS2 or AS3, I would recommend Essential ActionScript 2.0 or Essential ActionScript 3.0. These aren't really game-oriented books, but they are indispensable for language reference.

you can always drop questions here in /r/flash, but if you want to get into as3 (which assume is what you want) i strongly advise buying this: http://www.amazon.com/Essential-ActionScript-3-0-Colin-Moock/dp/0596526946

edit: dont know why but it seems to be here: http://cmdstud.khlim.be/vier/WebTaVe/OReilly.Essential.ActionScript.3.0.Jun.2007.pdf

Also, Keith Peters used be the Flash genius. Check out his Making Things Move books http://www.amazon.com/Foundation-Actionscript-3-0-Animation-Making/dp/1590597915. They maybe a bit complex for new Flash devs but you will be taught OOP from the start.

For iPhone? Get a book. This one is ok. Not great though. How is your programming? Are you a programmer just looking to learn AS3? Or are you a non-programmer?
