  You need that charger to get the full life out of Eneloops. If you take care of them, Eneloops will last at least a decade, maybe longer. They achieve maximum longevity when you charge any time before they reach 60% depth of discharge (40% remaining capacity). So, if you charge them when they're half discharged or sooner, that's easy to remember.

I see beam angle, intensity, and throw that might be useful in filtering for that kind of feature, but I'm not sure if it's actually possible to filter that way.

  The Armytek Tiara lights are similar, and imitate many of the features of Zebralights, so although I haven't used one myself, they get recommended often and they might be equally versatile as a handheld light - I just don't know if they come with a pocket clip. The quality of Armytek is good, but is praised less often than Zebralight. They might have some features that are different from Zebralight, in addition to a lower price, so they're worth considering.
  
  I almost always use my Zebralights without the headlamp strap, although I do use the silicone holder because it makes it easy to swivel and point the light. I put some zip ties on it for a lanyard so I can attach it to the exterior of my EDC bag, without risk of losing it. It's tiny, so it's convenient to always have it ready. I don't need to fish around in my bag or pocket to find it. I just tap the on-button, and go. I don't need to fumble with it or even bother to put it away when I'm done using it. I think in your job, that would be ideal for you too, because it will save you a ton of time, which adds up every time you use it.
  
  They do have some spill light, but you have fine control over the brightness, so you can dial it down to only the amount of light you need, and you can make the light on time very brief, even though the button isn't quite a momentary on switch, which would be ideal. The way you select brightness by clicking the button might be even more useful than a momentary on switch anyway, so you can minimize the amount of light you use to the point no one will notice you, even if they're nearby while you're shining your light.

There's pretty much 1xAA, 2xAA, 1xCR123, 2xCR123, and 18650 (not all 18650 flashlights take CR123s!). CR123 is, IMO, a nicer form factor, for handling, but rechargeable energy density is crap, TBH. AA gives you the most versatility. But, avoid alkalines whenever possible, for flashlights. For AA size, depending on flashlight, either go with 14500, or Japan-made Eneloops (Duracell and Amazonbasics both have rebranded versions of these at good prices).

AA NIMH have a nominal voltage range of 1.0-1.25V. 14500 fit in the same space, with 3.6-4.2V, should a single AA flashlight allow greater voltage. Often, that will give you greater max output. OTOH, you'll have to be really careful if lending the light to anyone else. Today, though, most get pretty good output on AA NIMH. Japanese Eneloops are the best rechargeables out there, and can be found under Panasonic's name, Amazonbasics', and Duracell (if buying at a B&M store, look for made in Japan on the back). I've had those, and knock-offs (like Rayovac's), and over time, with real world use, the difference is not subtle. I have not used Chinese Eneloops, myself, but largely because reports by users, and tests on them, indicated similar behavior to the knock-offs I'd had. The Japanese ones just keep on going.

18650 is a little bigger than 2xCR123, and has a nominal voltage range of 3.6-4.2V. 2xCR123 have a nominal range of around 2.5-6V. 18650 has the most R&D going into it, being the most popular size (it's what is in laptops and power tools, among other things), so you get the most energy storage for the size, weight, and money. But, it does not have a comparable primary cell to swap it with, so make sure the flashlight in question can take 2xCR123 as backup (if not stated that way, make sure it can take at least 6V input).

You can get good chargers and batteries for $15-20 total, for about any handheld sizes (make sure to get a charger that has independent bays, if going AA NIMH - example), so your $75 budget is pretty realistic, and honestly, gives you tons of options.

Also, if you keep up with your rechargeable cells, costs of Lithium primary batteries (including AAA and AA) will not be much, in the long run. A leaky alkaline AA can do a lot of damage, so I would advise against using them if there is any other option; and the actual costs over time are fairly small, when you're usually just partially discharging the rechargeable cell(s) in between top offs, 90% of the time.

Panasonic-made CR123s are the quality ones to buy, if going that route for primaries. They can be had online for around $1.50/ea., so comparable with, or slightly cheaper than, AA Lithiums. You can also buy them at not-exorbitant prices at hardware stores and outdoors stores, and probably gun shops. Surefire, Streamlight, and Duracell, are all made at the same plant, and are all good quality. Some cheaper ones, like the popular Tenergy, are known for aging poorly, and getting unbalanced quickly. If mainly using rechargeable cells for day to day use, I don't think saving money that way provides good value.

While I'm not a big fan of their UIs (though the Pro does seem nicer than non-Pro, IMO), I think Armytek's TIR lights have the best balanced beams for EDCs, in the $40-60 range, with a wide spot, and plenty of flood.

I wouldn't go for quite the same size. There's not much point to the length, and the weight makes it unwieldy. The thickness is good though. We have what we call soda can lights because they're about the size of a soda can, and I think you'll like that size.

The BLF Q8 sells for around $50. It's a great light. It costs more on Amazon right now, but occasionally it goes on sale. I'll warn that this light was created to work very well in ways that you can't see without taking it apart, and to avoid other lights that look the same because they took a lot of shortcuts that make them perform horribly that can't be fixed without spending more than it would cost to buy a Q8. There's also a Sofirn version of the Q8 that's legit, but it has a colder tint that I recommend against if you want to see rattlers.

The next light I'd look at is the Emisar D18. It's a little skinnier, and twice as expensive, but twice as bright. The best thing about it is the LED options. I've found that rattlers are easier to see with a light that has a slightly rosy tint, so I'd get warm white 3000K LED's. That one also has great CRI, so things will look more natural. I think the D18 would be a better match for you than the Q8.

You'll need batteries and a charger, and you'll need to be careful where you buy batteries. The type of battery you get is a big deal too. The "30Q" is a solid battery. Mtn Electronics is a safe source, and he lists some other batteries that will work at the bottom of the page. Illumn is also a good source. Note that these are button tops. You can find cheaper batteries elsewhere, but they will probably be flat tops that may not make a solid electrical connection.

These two lights will blow you away. They're also side clickies like the Maglite. Honestly, if you've only used that Maglite, then you'll probably be very happy with this Wowtac A1S that only costs $26, and it comes with a battery that can be charged via usb. Make sure you buy the NW version.

I've mentioned tint a couple of times. Even if you don't buy any of these lights, you should pay attention to the tint. Avoid cold white lights. Those are about 6000K or higher. A neutral tint (4000K to 5000K) should be okay. Warm white is around 3000K or lower, and makes the colors on a rattler pop more.

Pretty much any single cell 18650 light will do that with the utmost ease. The best way to describe the performance of a single 18650 1000 lumen light that hasn't used one is that it's brighter than you expect it will be multiple times over.

The wowtac a2s in neutral white is a great low cost high quality light. It's a headlamp, but it can be removed from the headband for handheld use. Being able to do both is very useful.

Someone else reccomended the wowtac a1s. It's great too. Its handheld with a better user interface. Better at handheld use. I just reccomend the headlamp since it does both and you might end up using it more than you expect.

Make sure to get the verson with the s at the end, the plain a2 is a 500 lumen cheaper model and the amazon page tries to merge them for some reason.

It comes with a usb rechargeable battery, but i consider it a freebie, not something to depend on permanently in my opinion. The charger built into the battery gets kinda hot and the cell is of unknown quality and true capacity. The ones i gifted to people at Christmas are still going strong though with heavy use. You could very well just buy the light and see how the included battery does.

If you decide on a higher quality battery get an NCR18650GA and an xtar ant mc1 plus. This light needs long protected cells so that one is perfect.

May I recommend my two lights (I walk 1-3hrs most nights) that I use in heavily wooded counrtyside:

• Thorfire S70S - very good throw and decent flood, rugged and a serious heavy light, 3960lm, 2x18650 or 2x26650 (my use), fast shipping from Amazon at $56. You will need batteries and charger (VC2 for me). I run mine on High (1800lm). IMO the advertised Turbo setting at 3960lm is not worth the heat and reduced run times, and barely noticed output improvement. I use flat top unprotected batteries but most say to use protected ones.
  
  
• Wowtac A2s right angle Neutral White My essential light, great for its size decent throw and flood, light and comfortable to wear, ~1000lm 1x18650 button top protected included, which charges via USB port. Same criticism running on Turbo; I run on High (~400lm) and still seriously bright which does 4-1/2 hrs it is said. Again, fast shipping from Amazon and an amazing $30 value. Note: For best results, use button top batteries. Flat tops cut off with vibration.
  
  How I use my lights: I walk a lot, and wear the headlamp and carry the S70S on the included sling. My hands are free. The headlamp is on all the time (High) and when I need huge reach, it's one button press away on the handy S70S. No fumbling around. The headlamp lights the way for my feet (especially important because of where I walk), and about 40 yards ahead. The S70S is great for seeing the wildlife (deer, coyotes, etc) across fields. My observation on distance: If you can't make out details you care about, at 500 yards in the day time, don't expect it at night with any light. Your eyes are a limiting factor.
  
  Finally, a headlamp is a no brainer if you need to work with your hands in the dark.

I'm going to start with battery recommendations, basically the best combination of power and size is a cell called the 18650. It's slightly bigger than an AA, though one of them has the power of about 5 AA cells. They're are a bit fatter, but nowhere near C size. A light that uses one of them is likely your best bet for both EDC and a weapon mount.

For the EDC light, assuming the single-18650 is small enough (tons of people carry them with no issue) I'm going to recommend a Thrunite Neutron 2C. It has as ramping interface, hold the button down and it will gradually increase to the highest level, then back the other way. Let go to choose exactly how much light you want. Additionally, it has shortcuts to the lowest mode (hold down), last used mode (click) and highest mode (double click.) It comes with a battery, and has a built in charger. While it has a strobe, you have to deliberately try to get it, it isn't in the main modes. It's a very commonly recommended first light on here, and I think would serve you quite well.

If that sounds too big, we have a bunch of recommendations for AA-size lights as well. Any of them on this list are awesome.

For a handgun light, I recently picked up an Olight PL-Mini Valkyrie, and it's awesome. It's a great, compact fit on my Carry-length Sig P320, has as built-in battery with magnetic charging that does a pretty consistent 400 lumen for about 80 minutes, has a good beam shape, and intuitive controls.

For an AR Mount, we're going to use a bit of your leftover pistol light budget. An Armtek Predator would be a good way to go, it has an optional remote switch. It's a ~1" body tube, so it fits into any mount (theirs isn't the greatest.) Here's a cheap option for that, better are certainly available.

With that light you'll need a couple of batteries and a charger. These will also be compatible with your Neutron 2C. I like getting batteries from Illumn, as Amazon has a not-insignificant danger of getting sketchy counterfeits.

Alright, that at least gives us a little more information. Seems that you want a light for general lumen cannon work, right? Something with a big battery and a large head that can light things up for as far as you need to see?

I like recommending Convoy lights due to their quality for their cost. The L2 will carry very similarly to your Maglite, with its wide and robust head and long handle. The one I linked has a CREE XHP50.2, which is a larger LED that should give you a ton of light out the front in a decently wide area while maintaining good throw (in case someone makes a run for it). These should slot well into a Maglite ring holster and hang from your belt. The L2 can run on either one or two 18650 or 26650 cells (the latter are recommended for their capacity and better fitment) and you will get plenty of runtime out of it provided you don't use Turbo all night. If you go for this, I am a big fan of the 4000K color temperature range, though others may chime in with different opinions.

Convoy also makes a decent holster for their C8-style lights, and so I will suggest the Luminus SST-40 version of their C8+. The C8-style chassis has been around forever, so new bits and mods are available for super cheap. Like the XHP50.2, the SST-40 is a larger and floodier LED. In order to make this a better general-purpose light, you might want to drop an orange peel reflector into this guy. It'll take one 18650 cell, but backups are easy to carry and swap in the field.

In the event you want something smaller I am a fan of dual-switch 18650 lights. The Wowtac A1S BSS v2 has been in my pocket for a year now and never let me down. The interface is awesome - you can adjust modes using the side button when the light is on, or a quick double tap on the tail switch from off takes you right to turbo. Super handy when you need a lot of light quickly. I cannot suggest a holster for this outright, although I am certain Streamlight or Fenix will make a holster that will fit it brilliantly.

In that vein, the Fenix PD35 and Streamlight ProTac 2L-X are both of similar size and very popular with law enforcement, but for far more than the Wowtac.

No. You should avoid 3xAAA for all of the reasons you've mentioned. It's a stupid way of powering a device.

Black Diamond and Petzl are liked among climbers because they're lightweight. For literally any other purpose, a headlamp from another brand will be better, mainly because of better battery types. We won't recommend any no name headlamps, but I'm sure they'll be brands that you haven't heard of. These headlamps might also surprise you with their prices after seeing what BD and Petzl headlamps cost, but trust us, we know what's good.

All that being said, it seems like you're after some sort of rechargeable headlamp. Great choice! What's your budget? The Wowtac A2S is a fantastic value, and definitely worth looking at. Good headlamp for a great price.

Some people have some good information here but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyways.

Flashlights are no better for self defense than sturdy sticks - it's not what they were designed for. Some companies put 'tacticool' strike bezels on their flashlights, like the Wowtac A1S BSS TAC, but it's kind of ridiculous. If you really need to defend yourself, pepper spray will do a much better job as long as it's legal where you live.

18650 pushes what can fit in a standard pocket, unless you're wearing cargo pants. Most lights using these batteries have a good amount of heft already, so I'd strongly recommend trying one of the single battery recommendations in this thread.

As previously stated by others, zooming lights suck at being waterproof and add a lot of weight. They aren't our favorite around here.

Even though most lights recommended here don't zoom, the brightness is adjustable. Lower moonlight modes are perfect for tasks that are close up and indoor use without waking anyone, and high modes throw a long way.

Spill is a good thing in a lot of cases. When I go hiking at night, the hotspot shines far down the path and the spill illuminates at my feet so I don't trip and to the sides so I still have some peripheral vision. Perfect for watching out for those rogue raccoons.

RECOMMENDATION

The first 18650 light I got, based on a recommendation here, was the Astrolux S1. It's way under your budget, throws quite far for it's size, and has a really solid build. It's waterproof, and if you absolutely insist on bludgeoning someone with it I'm sure it will hurt. Most people prefer the 3D tint option, which is a neutral tint that's not too warm or too cool. Here is a beamshot to give you an idea of the throw and spill from this light. It doesn't have built in charging, but that really helps keep it waterproof. If you pick up two 18650s, they will easily last you a weekend camping trip even with extremely liberal use.

This is a great tube light to start off with. I find it perfect for hiking, and it has given me an idea of how high-performance lights work and what I want/don't want in my next lights.

I'd suggest getting a single AA light as a backup. I recently picked up the Thrunite T10 and have been quite pleased with it.

Someone mentioned a bunch of 90 headlamps which all of those are great but don't have built-in charging. Is built-in charging a must?

The Klarus AR10 seems like you're best option technically because of the 90 swivel head and built-in charging but the modes really suck on it. No Moonlight mode and the 10 lumens to 150 lumens is a huge jump. I would easily suggest any of those other non-rechargeable headlamps over this light. Sure you'll need to bring an extra battery but technically those headlamps are half the weight of the AR10 if it means anything.

The advantage of those headlamps are the better modes. The HC30 has 5 excellently spaced modes and can be had for $50. The Wizard has a few additional modes and a lower low and great durability. And the H600Fd has even more amazing modes on it with excellent Firefly modes and enough levels of output for every situation (durability is also excellent). I do have experience with all three of these headlamps which I ended up sticking with the H600Fd because of the excellent modes. Let me know if you have any questions.

I've been researching this myself. I do think you need to specify a few things first though:

• Do you ever need to use it as a headlamp?

Fenix has great build quality, but most of their lights fall short on things enthusiasts like, such as good sub-lumen low modes for preserving dark adaptation, color quality, and user interfaces with shortcuts from off to useful modes.

The LD02 breaks with some of those habits, having excellent color quality (CRI is 90+), very warm tint resembling an incandescent, and a pretty good low mode. It's not the bigger, higher-output light you're looking for though.

Consider the Sofirn SP36 BLF edition for a bigger light. Make sure it's the Samsung LH351D version, which has excellent color quality. The other version of the SP36 has poor color quality. Here are more recommendations - you're probably looking for the high-performance section near the bottom.

For an aesthetically pleasing and small light, I'd recommend the ReyLight Pineapple.

A beautiful brass light that takes either standard AA's or rechargeable 14500's if you want higher output. High CRI out of the Nichia LED, and isn't too big. Most people will recommend that you get an 18650 light (and so would I honestly) but a lot of new people to the flashlight world don't want to have to get a light with special batteries or one that is as large as an 18650 light.

If you want a buy once/cry once option, there is the Zebralight Sc64w which is pretty much the smallest 18650 light on the market, and practically the best. But then you'll need at least 2 batteries and a charger, so factor that cost in.

So, right off the bat you've got two criteria that tend to start fights around here:

• Starting fires is entertaining, but is extremely inefficient. You waste a huge amount of battery power to do it, and can only light certain materials like dark paper. It's a party trick, not a camping tool.
  
  
• The best use of a flashlight for self defense is to make sure you don't trip while running away. The second best is holding the light in your off-hand while your gun is in your dominant hand. Other than that, if it's possible to disorient someone with light, just about any flashlight we like will be good enough.
  
  Ignoring those criteria, I'm going to suggest a Thrunite Neutron 2C. Click the button for on/off, push and hold to smoothly raise or lower brightness. Includes a good-quality 18650 and charges on USB.
  
  And grab a BIC lighter for your fires. If you want something fancier, get a Zippo and a butane insert that won't dry out every three days.

Do you mean put the whole light in/on some kind of charging cradle? Those are available, but you'd be limiting your options greatly.

USB charging is more common. There are a number of great lights that'd meet your requirements that have USB or magnetic charging, so you plug a charging cable to the light. Again, your options will be more limited than if you were okay with removing the battery and charging it in a charger, but you'd have more options than if you require a cradle.

For a light with built-in charging you can buy on Amazon, and considering you can probably fit a 1x 18650 light in your shorts pretty easily, I'd recommend the Thrunite Neutron 2C Neutral White. Up to 1,100 lumens with useful lower modes and smooth brightness ramping.

EDIT: Although, the Neutron 2C is closer to 5 inches long than 4. If you want something really small (3.64" by 1") and high quality, you should take a look at the BLF FW3A (not on Amazon and not USB-rechargeable though).

You are in luck, "standard" batteries are already rechargeable. Here are some rechargeable AAs and a charger.

And here are AA powered lights that aren't black. The Klarus Mi7 is a popular option. The Olight S2A even glows in the dark.

Are you sure you don't want a headlamp too? Most of those activities mentioned would be better served with both hands free.

I understand where you're coming from by wanting to run alkalines in it, but I, along with many others here, would highly recommend a set of Eneloops for regular use. I'm going to assume your reason for wanting an AA-sized light is for the availability of the batteries, which is just fine, but they do have a tendency to leak (although probably not anywhere near as likely as the folks here would have you believe). I own lights that take all sorts of batteries, and for actual "emergency" situations, I keep some Energizer Lithiums handy. They're shelf-stable for a very long time, can handle pretty extreme temperatures, and don't pose any danger to the light. They are fairly expensive for regular use, though, and that's why I tend to use Eneloops.

People have recommended a few good lights, but, from my personal experience, I would say a Thrunite T10 is a solid candidate for what you want. I EDC'd it for a few weeks, and it was pretty good. There isn't any brightness setting between the "low" mode and the "turbo" mode, which was a little annoying for me, but it was still usable. It comes with a diffuser, as well, which makes it very good for emergency lighting. In terms of durability, I haven't thrown it around too much, but the driver and all is glued in pretty solidly (at least on mine), so I'd assume it wouldn't mind a bit of a beating.

Anyway it seems like there are some lights out there many would skip over because of better a little more expensive alternatives, but those lights also seem to fit your needs pretty well so there may not be any need to spend the extra money. One such light is the Wowtac A2S I saw reviewed not too long ago. There's also the A2 for ten bucks cheaper but it's half as bright. It's your basic angled 18650 XP-L headlamp that comes with a battery with the built in microUSB recharging port. Again, not the best light for the price range, not the best included battery, but it sounds like you would get good use from it in an all inclusive package.

Reylight Pineapple V3 for 54$ on amazon, yeah it's a AA light and pretty heavy as it's brass but for it's size it far outperforms any AAA light that I'm aware of and a lot of AA lights too. If brightness is your main concern this would be my choice.

Edit: If you grab a 14500 cell too it doubles the already impressive output, I currently use Eneloops in mine and even then this is an excellent light in a fairly compact size.

The Folomov EDC C1 is also a great choice from what I hear and cheaper, they had some QC issues before but they've apparently resolved them, I have one coming

I am one that uses a flashlight a lot. I don't have a dozen different lights in my collection, I have 2. Those two are very similar, but there are a couple of differences.
The Thrunite Neutron 2C V3. I like this light a lot. It's my "use it 10+ times a day" light. It runs off of 1x 18650 cell (battery), 2xCR123, or a couple of other options. It has built in USB charging, it comes with a 18650 cell, it has adjustable brightness (ramping), and goes from .5 lm to 1040 lm. This thing is bright! Or dim, whichever you want. It just feels good.
My only 2 gigs against it: It takes a while to get used to finding the flat side switch in the dark. I no longer have any problem locating it, but when I first got it, it was a bit challenging. Second gig is that the lens is not replaceable. The lens being broken on mine has not affected the operation in the least, but I would like to replace it. My other light is a Thorfire TK18. It's pretty similar to the Neutron, but it has a tail switch. It does NOT come with a battery. It does not have On-board USB (or any other) charging, which means that you would need to buy cells and at least one charger. It feels ok in my hand, but I prefer the feel of the Neutron.
It is also adjustable brightness, but also has a Low/Med/High/Turbo mode which I prefer on this light. ~$29 + cell & charger.

I highly recommend the Thrunite TH20 headlamp. Durable, fairly lightweight, simple usage, waterproof; perfect for camping. It can get pretty bright if you need it or has very low levels, too. More floody but with a defined hot spot. I recommend the neutral white version. Uses a single regular AA battery or you can use rechargeables if you like. A single battery gives decent run time unless you run it on high all the time. For camp use, I generally don't use it past 15-25% brightness. $29 on Amazon.

Edit: the TH20 isn't bulky on your head like an 18650 based headlamp, but if you need lots of brightness for longer run time, you might consider one of those instead. I use it in pitch black backpacking situations and don't need anything brighter, in fact I've mostly used comparatively very dim headlamps for over 20 years, until getting the TH20.

As for less frequent or lower prize value. My thought would be less frequent. When I first joined they were every few months which was amazing. Frequent enough they new people would happen across them, not so frequent as to (hopefully) bankrupt you. I can imagine the big sub 10k ones wont keep going as big as some of the previous ones. I'd rather see great giveaways at every 25k than mediocre ones at 10k.

I incorrectly assumed that you had to go in and do a closer check like acute care facilities do.

With that in mind, the Nitecore I recommended earlier probably won't work for you since the red LED in it is pretty low power. You might be better off getting a Solarforce L2M host (runs 18650, or can run stubby with 18350 with the extension tube removed) and a red LED drop in like this one from KAI Domain.

Or just get a white light that will take a screw in or slip on red filter, like Fenixes linked by u/ImALittleCrackpot. The Wowtac A1S BSS includes a screw in red filter and is complete package for $40.

Is available on Amazon a hard requirement? Can you estimate "last a long time"? What type of charger do you have and do you have? I ask these questions so the people more knowledgeable than myself (still pretty noobish) can better help you out.

If Amazon is a necessity, the thrunite t10Nw is a nice option that runs on AA and (possibly) supports 14500 for better runtime and higher output.

I'm assuming the 100 USD budget is for both lights combined. It's probably easier to get a light that includes a battery and charging solution. Wowtac are a well regarded brand that include USB rechargeable batteries with each of their lights.

For a headlamp (floody light) I'd recommend the Wowtac A2S for $30

For a normal flashlight (for more reach) get the Wowtac A1S It's definitely not the throwiest (longest reaching) light available but it should be good. Also $30. Make sure when ordering both to buy the neutral white (NW) version for each as it will cut through fog better than cool white.

That's about 60 USD, if you need spare batteries $40 is more than enough to cover spare batteries and a charger. Let us know if you need recommendations for those.

I believe an angled light is better for camping in general(you need two hands when cooking or setup tent), it can be used as both headlamp or hand held, also can be clipped on belt or backpack. If you dont have any experience with 18650, a wowtac A2S is the best starter package I believe. Or if you are more interested in the straight option, a Nite Ize headband can mount any straight light less than 1" on your head.

For another 18650 option A: Zanflare F1 4500-5000K from Gearbest with usb charging + get a protected battery from either Ilumn (they have a protected 3500mah MJ1 for $6.50 + shipping), IMRbatteries or liionwholesale.
For another 18650 option B: If the fog is dense I would suggest the Sofirn SF36W with a 2800mah battery from aliexpress, which it's available on 3000K warm white and should penetrate better the fog.

You can't really go wrong with the Armytek Wizard Pro, it's my favorite light by far. Apart from a lot of other good stuff I like that it doesnt have these cooling rings that tend to get stuck on pants pockets when EDCing it.

The Thrunite TN12 is pretty nice as well.

Whatever you do, don't buy any plastic flashlights. If you wanna buy some flashlights at a reasonable price, try getting some Maglites. They can be serviced if need be and will last a long time. If I can't afford expensive flashlights at the moment and would need to buy a bunch of them, Maglites can be purchased on the fly at the box stores.

But if you want the real deal, then get a state-of-the-art tactical flashlight that can fit inside your pocket. ThruNite, Nitecore, Fenix, and Convoy are the kings of flashlights. Personally, I recommend the Thrunite TC12 V2 as the reviews on this flashlight praises its durability and reliability. Not too many people had trouble with this flashlight, except with the V1 because people complained about cycling through modes to get to the one they want.

Since power is an issue. Rechargeable batteries are the way to go. 18650 Lithium batteries will last you 500 charges, but you can pick up rechargeable batteries in AA, AAA, C, and D-Cell Nickel Metal Hydrate as well. Since the flashlight kings have torches that run off of 18650, there are adapters that you can use in case you can't get a hold of them. If you want to stick with primaries and AA/ AAA batteries, then get Energizer Ultimate Lithium cells. They're pricey but they last a long time and can be stored up to 25+ years.

Since this is a third-world nation you're sending these lights to, then USB rechargeable lighting an absolute must. If you want true independence, get a solar charging kit, portable energy storage, and a USB rechargeable battery system. You can use the solar panels to charge your flashlight and your rechargeable batteries without ever using the power grid.

Might be worth considering a headlamp as well. The Wowtac A2S is probably your best headlamp option under $50.

If you want a regular light, I tend to like the Convoy S2+ as a work light. It's cheap, fairly indestructible, and parts are easy to get. Otherwise if you want to stick with ThruNite, the Neutron 2C V3 would probably be a good option for you.

If you get the convoy with biscotti firmware you can configure it for a variety of different modes, so you can exclude strobes. Also on the Neutron the strobe isn't in the regular mode group, you have to double tap the button to access it (If I'm reading this right) Don't know if that still counts for you.

You can find this type of light for less than $3 on AliExpress. Probably not a terrible light for the price. It will have an ugly tint and it's certainly not waterproof, but that's what you get for the cost of a soda.

You didn't list the features you want, but I'm sure there are some other lights out there that will satisfy them. Maybe something like this ThruNite T10? Have you checked the stickied post on lights that get recommend a lot?

I recommend the WowTac A1S, it produces an honest 1000 Lumens, has great modes and the battery is reliable and easy to charge (uses a cellphone charger). It includes a pocket clip as well which is convenient.

As others have stated, Sofirn SP36 BLF edition with Anduril is probably the best option in that range. You can get the light with stock Sofirn branded batteries for $70 or get it without for $50.

If you want slightly better than the stock Sofirn batteries, you can get 3 of the popular and budget friendly high drain 18650's like the Samsung 30q for $16.50 + shipping.

I can see how in your case zooming is beneficial. I’m a security supervisor, in my case I use flashlights for patrols and searches. For a throwy light I’ve convinced one of my officers to get the BLF GT Mini it’s a great searchlight type light that can fit in a jacket pocket.

I convinced another to get a Wowtac A1S it’s a good EDC sized floody light with 1100 lumens output. It’s great for those who haven’t used higher end lights as it comes with an 18650 that has a build in micro USB charging port.

I haven’t come across a zoomie that I’d be willing to recommend to anyone but maybe someone else will chime in.

I will recommend the Wowtac A1S bss v2

Its very bright (1100 lm 19200 cd), durable (check out the torture tests on youtube), and it has a detachable bezel for defensive purposes. Im a big fan of the two button UI as well. Definitely great value at this price point.

The ThruNite TH20 (neutral white) is right in your range, but I think something with an optic/frosted lens would be better suited for working on cars. So...

It's a bit over your stated $30, but I think the Skillhunt H15 (neutral white) fits the bill. The TIR optic should spread the beam nicely and work very well for working on cars. There is a group buy thread over on BLF that might knock down the price some as well.

Both of these are AA/14500. If you'd be willing to go with a 18650, you could get something with more output/runtime, but that'd be up to you.

I think smaller, more frequent prices vs bigger less frequent prizes kind of depends on the intention of the giveaway.

For people who spend a lot of time on this sub, I would guess that if there was something that they want that is less expensive they would have already picked it up or just generally be less excited to win. If you’ve already got a zebralight it’s a little less exciting to win a wowtac a1. They would prefer bigger prizes.

However, if the goal is to grow the subreddit and bring people in, more frequent giveaways is a better way to accomplish that goal.

I think making the giveaways smaller would make more sense than fewer giveaways, though realistically you could do both and I doubt anyone would complain. There's lots and lots of great lights available for smaller dollar amounts, and more chances to win would keep the excitement up for a lot of people. Just my 2 cents.

Definitely the most recommended budget friendly headlamp around here. Bright, tough, waterproof, good UI with shortcuts to firefly and turbo, can be used handheld or on a headband, comes with a battery that has a micro USB port for charging, so it’s perfect if you don’t have 18650s and a charger yet.

Wide area while also 300+ meters of throw? That’s gonna be a beefy light. And complete overkill for camping and hiking. Most folks are better served by using a smaller headlamp for flood, and a handheld thrower.

But you know what you want, and the Thrunight TN36 might be a good fit. If you already have batteries and a charger you can save some money buying the light alone, rather than the full kit.

Alternatively a Sofirn SP36 is cheaper while still almost matching your request. Provide it with these batteries to get the best performance out of it.

And maybe look at some beam shots from legit reviews. The lumen ratings on some of those “military grade tactical” things are straight up lies. 2000+ lumens in your pocket will set your pants on fire. (ask anyone with an Emisar D4)

Just a suggestion from personal experience but I don't need a light stored in my car because I now have a keychain light that is bright enough for most purposes.

I also have a D4v2 but I wouldn't stick it in the glove compartment. Its too "flashy" to be relegated to that.

Do you have any more info on what you'll be doing with it exactly? Is this a "take the dog out" kind of light?

The Wowtac A1S or A2S are both good, bright lights. The A2S is a headlamp, but you can take it out of the headband and use it normally, and a headlamp can come in handy sometimes. They both come with a removable battery that has built-in microUSB charging. The "neutral white" version of either light is recommended for more pleasant light.

For the small giveaways we could have a set prize like a Convoy S2 and then for the milestones like 25K etc there could be a bigger choose your own prize.

Thirded. Wowtac A2S is at the upper budget, but it's a spectacular deal and pretty much perfect for what you want. Can't charge it while you're using it, but you can get more batteries, and it'll run 14hrs on the ~100lm medium mode, which is plenty of light for hiking.
