They're meant for concerts and clubs or any loud sustained activity where you still need to be able to hear and make out audio like at a concert. Otherwise, you just wear regular earplugs if you're operating a machine or something but regular earplugs are useless at concerts or events because they muffle higher frequencies even though they're stronger. Concert earplugs are better at decreasing all frequencies equally instead of one over the other.

It's uncommon for people to wear concert earplugs at the cinema HOWEVER, modern movies have gotten very loud and cinemas are often playing films at above 90 or even 100 dB according to people that measure this. You aren't going to damage your hearing watching a few movies an year at this volume but it does decrease it over time. Modern action films also have far less quiet and are constantly filled with noise or music. This is why I generally wear concert earplugs, it also makes the audio a bit clearer for me when it's so loud that it's crackling. I use these, they come with three sets of filters, the highest filter (one that blocks the most audio) is the one I use at the theatre and I can still make out the dialogue:

The Mastershot series of books are okay. There are some cool suggestions of yoi browse similar items

If you want less pictures and more educational, the Five Cs of Cinematography is a staple for everyones bookshelf.

Otherwise, id just recommend are books for individual films. I thinks theres one for every Miyazaki, Pixar,...

Sounds vaguely like an episode of Jim Henson's Storyteller series. Are you sure it was a feature-length film?

Edit: formatting

Well, if an appeal to authority counts as an actual argument, then here is a book of 100 cult films that lists Star Wars. So now what? Are you now honour-bound to agree with these two film professors?

I've only read short stories out of this collection (look how amazing that collection is, it's my treasure), and I got about 50 pages into Mason & Dixon before getting distracted, but I bought Crying Of Lot 49 right after the film, which looks like it'll be my first proper Pynchon novel.

Probably this version, the limited edition from 2006. The theatrical release is a "special feature" on disc 2. They did this with Empire and Jedi as well.

> The 2006 limited-edition two-disc release of George Lucas's epic space fantasy Star Wars is not only the first time the movie has been officially available by itself on DVD. It marks the first-ever DVD release of Star Wars as it originally played in theaters in 1977. What does that mean exactly? Well, for starters, the initial title crawl proclaims that this is just Star Wars, not Episode IV, A New Hope. Second, the film is without the various "improvements" and enhancements Lucas added for the theatrical rerelease in 1997 as well as the DVD premiere in 2004. So no more critters and droids scurrying around the port of Mos Eisley when Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi first arrive, no meetings between Han Solo and Jabba the Hut and between Luke and Biggs (extraneous scenes that were cut in 1977), no enhanced explosions during the final reel, and--most importantly to some fans--no more of Greedo shooting first in the bar. Instead Han is free to be the scoundrel and not even let Greedo squeeze off a shot.

>What do you lose by watching the 1977 version? Dolby Digital 5.1 EX sound, for one thing (only 2.0 Surround here). Digital cleanup for another--Tatooine looks like it's been coated with an additional layer of sand cloud. But for home-theater owners, the biggest frustration will be from the non-anamorphic picture. On a widescreen TV, an anamorphically enhanced (16x9) picture at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio will fill the screen with the exception of small black bars on the top and bottom. The original edition of Star Wars, however, is not anamorphically enhanced (sometimes referred to as "4:3 letterbox"), so on a widescreen TV it will have large black bars on the top, the bottom, and the sides unless you stretch the picture (and distort it in the process, especially considering the substandard picture quality). If you're watching on a standard square-shaped (4:3) TV, though, you won't notice a difference.

They're long out of print, and copies from online retailers are pretty pricey. Maybe people have had better luck at yard sales and used record shops. In my experience, they're fairly readily available at public libraries, too.

You seem to understand all the formats well, so let me ask. In the new Criterion bluray of Police Story. They advertise it as a 4k transfer, but are selling it as a regular bluray. So is it 4k or 1080p? If its a 4k transfer, why not sell it as a 4k film, why put it on a smaller capacity format? Heres a link.

> 90s when Christian parent groups

I think you mean Al and Tipper Gore.

No one is more responsible for censorship of music, television and movies than Tipper Fucking Gore.

Check out Writing About Movies. The bulk of it is an introduction to the different critical approaches followed by exercises that help you generate and develop ideas for what to write about. It's a textbook geared toward new film studies students, but it's concise (~200 pg) and I think it fits what you're looking for.

> so why spend upwards of $30 on a Blu-Ray copy of a film

That is quite an [exaggeration] (http://www.amazon.com/Taxi-Driver-Blu-ray/dp/B004IFYMYI?SubscriptionId=AKIAIY4YSQJMFDJATNBA&tag=bluray-021-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B004IFYMYI&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER). That particular Taxi Driver bluray was actually under $10 when I bought it. Most blurays are much less than $30 new.

You can get Possession on Bluray for $10: https://www.amazon.com/Possession-Blu-ray-Isabelle-Adjani/dp/B00CZB8IOW

However, the Mondo version for $40: https://www.amazon.com/Andrzej-Zulawskis-POSSESSION-Special-Digipak/dp/B00RBPYA9O/ is a huge upgrade if you care for that.

Fear, Anxiety, and Depression is truly a rare one though. It's only been released on VHS, but a rip of the VHS is online if you ever change your mind.
