31. Formula D

    Features:
  • ACTION-PACKED RACING GAME: Formula D is a high stakes Formula One type racing game where the players race simulated cars with the hope of crossing the finish line first. This updated version of Formula Dé features boards that have an F1 track and a Street Track on the other side.
  • STRATEGY BOARD GAME: The game mechanisms are a simple race, get to the finish line first! However, players have to use a significant amount of planning and rely on quite a bit of luck. Each turn, players may move up one gear, stay in that gear, or move down gears. This forces players to match possible rolls with the optimum distance for that turn, and hopefully plan ahead.
  • CHALLENGING AND COMPETITIVE: Players must manage their car’s health, plan for their best path and have good luck on their dice rolls The higher the gear you are, the bigger the dice you throw. Players take penalties if they miss their roll, bump into another car, are blocked by other cars, have to brake heavily or have to downshift several gears.
  • HIGHLY VARIABLE: Customize your cars, use a pre-generated character, add Slipstreaming rules, road debris and change tire types to modify your distance rolls. Variations allow single lap races or multiple laps with pit stops to repair some of your damage points. Advanced rules provide a deeper F1 simulation and Illegal street racing adds even more excitement - anything goes!
  • NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This fun racing game is made for 2 to 10 players and is suitable for ages 14 and older. Basic rules quick to learn, easy to play.Children as young as 8 can play with the help of an adult. Average playtime is approximately 60 minutes.
  • 2-10 players
  • About an hour to play
  • Auto racing fun
  • Fast paced board game
  • Easy to learn but a challenge to master

This is long, but here is a quick lesson on some of the principles of photography. I think this will help you understand how to get the shots you're looking for.

Make sure you have a lot of memory, batteries and shoot in RAW. Exposure issues, levels, white balance and temperature will have a greater range of adjustments when you go into editing.

Use the burst feature like crazy. It may be a bit of a cheat, but I would compare it to shooting arrows. When you start off, about 1 in every 100 shots will result in a bullseye until you get about 1000 under your belt.

It has been mentioned tons, but you will definitely want to rent a better lens, ideally a K lens (though they are VERY expensive).

One of the things that will make your pictures look more professional is to have some good "depth of field" to where the background is out of focus. The K lenses are very "fast" which means they have a very large aperture (this is your f stop). The 18-55 kit lens has an f stop of 3.5 which frankly is a bit pathetic considering how wide the camera is.

The canon fixed 50mm lens has an f stop of 1.8 which will give you some amazing looking pictures without even trying. The problem is that the lens is really only good for close up shots such as face portraits. I'd say pick one up after F1 for your own personal use. Great lens for beginners to play with. Here is an example of how a great depth of field can make your pictures look "professional"

The depth of field will help separate the cars from the background and create a much cleaner look. It gives you less to look at, so the picture doesn't look as "busy". Wow... I'm using quotation marks like crazy.

Anyway, long range lenses typically don't have the same depth of field, but there are some fast lenses out there. A fixed lens is almost always faster.

I don't know much about lens rentals, but I think your best bet for an all around lens that will give you great shots would be the 70-200mm 2.8 if you can get a hold of one. The long distance range isn't spectacular, but if you can get close enough, the depth of field will help make them look great, and at 70mm you can still get some reasonably close up shots.

If you have no choice but to shoot long distance, the 100-400mm lens will give you a good range. With 400mm, two cars should fill the frame at the start from up in the stands at turn one.

Since you'll be outdoors, having the f stop all the way open will allow you to use 100 ASA settings with a medium shutter speed and your images shouldn't come out blown out. 100 asa will give you great quality shots with nearly no noise. Here is an example of a noisy picture taken with a high ASA setting. If the images are getting too blown out, you can try setting your exposure levels to -1, though it will increase your shutter speed which can take away the feeling of motion from the picture.

So, TL;DR

  • Rent a lens, find the lowest f stop you can
  • Pick your range. 100-400mm with a 4.5 f stop or the 70-200mm with 2.8 are good choices. The higher the number, the greater the zoom.
  • Shoot with your f stop as open as possible to get some depth of field to separate the cars from the background (shooting in AV mode will probably be best. Fixed f stop and the camera will adjust the shutter speed to compensate for exposure).
  • With an the f stop set so low, make sure your subject is in focus (USM lenses are extremely fast at focusing and will make your job easier)
  • Set the ASA as low as it will go
  • Shoot in RAW and find RAW photo editing software for editing
  • Shoot in burst mode as much as you can to help get to help ensure you get a good shot or two
  • BRING EXTRA BATTERIES AND MEMORY CARDS (you can find high capacity batteries on amazon for cheap and get them shipped overnight)

    GOOD LUCK!

Here's a link to the official F1 store Red Bull section: click

Go there and get into the Red Bull section to find all kinds of things. Most are high priced but there's something like a Mark Webber hat that costs under your price range.

Also check if he has the F1 2010 official video game that came out this past September. If he doesn't then find out what game system he has and get him F1 2010. It's made for all systems save for the Wii.
Here's a link to the Amazon page which is selling the console versions for only $40 US: click

Here's a good one we're all waiting for: click

It's the official season review for 2010 that ended just weeks ago. I would love to be surprised by something like this. It's coming out December 14th so it'll be out in time for Christmas.

Awesome shirt

And last but not least, my personal wish.
I'd love a subscription to F1 racing magazine. I'm in the US and it gets pricey and inconvenient to have to go to the bookstore to pick up the import priced copy every month, which comes in weeks later by the way.
It's hard to go wrong with this one. It's seen by most as the best, most interesting and worthy F1 editorial out there. I used to just buy it for the amazing photography, but now regularly enjoy reading through hall the stats and articles.
Click here for their page to get a subscription

Hope you can decide on something awesome for the person in question. Nice of you to ask around for them.

This question has been asked a bunch of times, but the one post I've found the most helpful was /u/that_video_art_guy's response in this post. For quick reference, here's the copy/paste:

I've read many of these books, I'm partial to the mechanics and team member books but find all of them to be very enjoyable.

Watch some of the documentaries on F1. There are some fantastic ones out there. Here are a few that you may want to look at. (Caveat - Despite the fact that these are documentaries, they are made by people with opinions and agendas. All are informative, but some are more... let's say biased, than others)

Welcome to an amazing sport with one of the best fan bases out there! Enjoy!

Oh, and try to find some friends who are into F1 if you can manage it. There aren't a lot of us in the U.S. but we're around.

He left because Bernie wouldn't offer Williams the new Concorde agreement until Parr had left. Parr is a very astute businessman who came from a background without motorsport. That he climbed pretty much to the top of one of the most respected teams in the sport so quickly and made them profitable outside F1 speaks volumes about his business abilities. The succession plan for Williams basically involved Parr taking Frank Williams' place when he was too old. And have a separate team manager who understood the technical side of F1. But he went after Bernie way too soon and got targeted for actually seeing the forest for the trees.

If you have a few bucks and some free time, check out his book. He will be back in F1 one day, and hopefully to fix the shambles that is the governance; he's far too good not to be brought back.

Really any of the Codemasters F1 games are great on PC if you just want to race F1 cars. If you want more realism but also use other cars, you could always try iRacing or the rFactor games. Personally, I've always loved playing F1 2012 and F1 2013.

As for racing wheels, I don't personally own one; however, my cousin has the Logitech G27 wheel which I've used while playing iRacing and I really liked it. It's on the more expensive side though: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-941-000045-G27-Racing-Wheel/dp/B001NT9TK4?ie=UTF8&keywords=logitech%20racing%20wheel&qid=1459282064&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4

It's an interesting book and talks about that kind of stuff in fact. It's worth noting of course that RBR 2010/McLaren 2007/Mercedes 2014-2016 intra-team title fights are generally rare so it doesn't come up much. Priestley discusses that teamwork in 2007 was a laughable concept: they completely, utterly forgot about Ferrari, and a lot of people had to kiss and make-up within McLaren long after Alonso had left.

I've no idea what arrangements are now; they might've done away with it. Irvine I know used to get rewards when Schumacher won, explicitly. I know Mercedes now have a generic win bonus, whichever driver wins.

Alonso tried to personally reward his side of the garage when they had success, but the team did not allow it, conscious that the us vs. them within McLaren was getting serious.

Try and get your hands on the 2010 and 2012 season reviews. Both amazing and thrilling seasons for which the drivers championship went down to the last race. And stick around this subreddit, you'll quickly pick up who's who and what's what.

Just FYI, Howard leight are great because they protect your hearing while also amplifying non damaging sounds (ie talking). So you can still enjoy all the sounds without any tinnitus!

Outdated, but likely will give you some insight:
Flat Out, Flat Broke: Formula 1 the Hard Way / The Original Stig (Perry McCarthy, who did make it to F1)

Also, doing well in the Nissan/Gran Turismo "GT Academy" could get you a decent way there, eg getting to drive at the Le Mans 24hr or in the World Endurance Championsihp as some previous winners have gotten to.

I figured responding would be better than downvoting and what not. Here's a short list of some good textbooks to start with.

Fluid Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications
: This is my favourite general fluid dynamics textbook.

Race Car Aerodynamics: Designing for Speed: Considered one of if not the best textbooks for race car specific aerodynamics.

Race Car Vehicle Dynamics: This is the defacto vehicle dynamics textbook. I don't think any F1 engineer out there hasn't read this.

Computational Fluid Dynamics: The CFD Bible.

PM me if you want ahem links to the digital versions. Sorry if I've been harsh earlier, everyone starts somewhere and some concepts aren't particularly intuitive. You've got the right attitude though, a better feel for aerodynamics will come soon enough.

u/wobblythings · 2 pointsr/formula1

I suggest you actually learn the basic fluid dynamics, then you'll understand how they work when people explain to you. Actual maths involved in proper fluid dynamics is pretty tough but you don't need it to understand the concepts.

Race Car Aerodynamics by Joseph Katz is a good mixture of theory and practical examples. The maths is basic, nothing beyond A level or first year undergraduate level.

I've taken these to a race before. They're my shooting headphones, but have found them to work great at the track.

http://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-R-01526-Electronic-Earmuff/dp/B001T7QJ9O

Automatically blocks noise above 82db, and allows you control how much ambient noise you can hear. Meaning, you can have a conversation with someone and still hear them just fine with the headphones on, but as soon as a noise greater than 82db occurs, they block it.

Also has an external audio jack to plug into.

> Did the movie incorrectly depict him, or simply didn't show his good side?

It showed Prost from Senna's point of view. And Senna's perception of reality was ... different.

If you're interested in their rivalry, there is an excellent book about it: Senna Versus Prost: The Story of the Most Deadly Rivalry in Formula One.

u/stikeymo · 5 pointsr/formula1

that's why i kinda love this sport, from a geeky perspective! if the technical angle of the sport takes your fancy, you can never stop learning about it as it's always progressing.

Huge question to answer. I suggest reading Total Competition: Lessons in Strategy from Formula One by Ross Brawn and Adam Parr. Funnily enough I ordered it a few hours ago.

The one complaint I have and it isn't about the G27, its that I can't use the clutch and stick with GT5.

Actually, as an artist I think you will appreciate another book by the same author: Adam Parr's graphic novel The Art of War

u/White_Sox · 9 pointsr/formula1

Right, I misspelled his name.
You can actually hear part of that story here, by the man himself.
Regarding the book, it's actually "Senna Versus Prost: The Story of the Most Deadly Rivalry in Formula One". Very good read, but sometimes I felt the author was biased towards Prost. Nevertheless, I encourage you to read it.

u/Throwawaymister2 · 2 pointsr/formula1

To anyone interested in racing, the story of Ernst Degner's defection from the MZ moto GP team is probably the best motor racing story ever. It's got everything, friendship, betrayal, the cold war, international espionage. It's awesome. A book was written about it called Stealing Speed.

u/cafk · 4 pointsr/formula1

Classics like:

Martin Brundle - Working the Wheel.

I hate to link to amazon but here.

Everything from Spa to Monaco, Winning Le Mans, nearly beating Senna in F3, his huge crash in Melbourne 1996, commentating with Murray Walker, team-mates with Schumacher - Go buy it!

u/CeeCee221b · 3 pointsr/formula1

I bought it from Amazon from a Marketplace seller. I wanna say it was $3? I bought about six F1 books (autobiographies mostly) from Marketplace sellers and the only thing that really hurt was the shipping.

u/RelevantFuturama · 1 pointr/formula1

Short answer, no. You can't buy exactly what you are looking for.

It doesn't exist because Bernie is a dinosaur. He was against the introduction of HD for a while and he'd be against this. Your best bet is the season review DVD from FOM.

I think they have around 5 hours footage form the races but i could be wrong on that.

u/doomwalk3r · 3 pointsr/formula1

From the book Senna vs Prost I gathered that Prost could be as quick as Senna in the rain, but he chose not to push too hard because of an accident of a fellow driver(I'm having trouble recalling who.)
