>We never see a companion of old giving a cautionary tale to the current companion.

On a different emotional scale than what you're imagining, perhaps, but we do get something of that from Sarah Jane to Rose in "School Reunion." Here's a copy of the exchange (taken from here

>ROSE: What do I do? Do I stay with [the Doctor]?
>SARAH: Yes. Some things are worth getting your heart broken for. Find me, if you need to, one day. Find me.

Whether Sarah Jane is referring to Rose getting her heart broken by the Doctor romantically or even just being unable to return to normal life, that much can be left open to interpretation. However, her very presence in the story and her general meaning to Rose in the above exchange, all of that suggests that although the Doctor's companions walk away from the TARDIS with their lives changed for the better, even the best and most brilliant among them may find normal life "a tough act to follow." There's the suggestion that there may come a day when Rose is no longer able to travel with the Doctor, whether through circumstance or a willing departure or the Doctor's own caprice, but that when that day comes, she may want to talk with someone who has lived through a similar experience.

All of that said, I do think your suggestion for Ace's ending is highly interesting. (WARNING: TANGENT AHEAD) I'd be very interested in an anthology two-part story someday, in which a bunch of old companions simply get together and talk about their adventures and impressions of the Doctor. I feel like an good cast for a story like this would be Ian, the Brigadier, Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan, Tegan, Peri, Ace, and Martha. A couple of those are perhaps odd-sounding picks, but we get a companion from each Doctor and some fairly different perspectives on the Doctor over time, especially from companions like the Brig, Sarah Jane, and Peri who got to know multiple regenerations of the Doctor. As for the format, obviously a television story would be the ideal, but failing that, I could see it as a comic similar to The Forgotten, or else a miniseries of Big Finish's Companion Chronicles series or something similar. (END TANGENT)

>I mean, just imagine the "sliver of ice" line from Hide or "one constant companion" line from Rose coming from someone who actually knew the Doctor? I'd really love to see Sophie Aldred come back for something like that.

Yes, that totally sells your premise to me. I can imagine it almost all too well, and it would almost have to be Ace who would be the one to provide that sort of insight into the Doctor's character. Doing a quick run-through of Doctors and companions in my head, I actually can't think of anyone else who would fit the bill - even at his most dismissive (Jo Grant and the Third Doctor), alien (anyone and the Fourth Doctor), or shouty (Peri and the Sixth Doctor), I feel like a majority of the Doctor's former companions would be able to forgive him his eccentricities given the nature of their relationship with him. Ace really is the only one whose dynamic is complicated enough for it to work, even taking New Who's focus on the companions into account.

I don't think the Last Great Time War should ever be shown. It's better left to the imagination. That said, here are some good ways to get your Paul McGann fix:

  • Big Finish monthly audios. Eight's storyline in the monthlies is mostly continuous, with some one-off episodes more recently. Very plot-heavy. If you want a mostly standalone intro episode to see if you like it, check out "The Chimes Of Midnight": one of the most well-loved episodes in all of Doctor Who.
  • Big Finish New Eighth Doctor Adventures. Same continuity as the monthlies, just takes place later. There are four continuous seasons so far and a fifth one coming out in November. Also very plot-heavy, with very few standalone episodes. "Max Warp", "Immortal Beloved" and "Phobos" are great introduction episodes if you just want a taste of what the series is like.
  • Eighth Doctor Adventures. The novels. Explicitly said to take place in a different timeline from Big Finish (although there are a few exceptions and crossovers). I like "The Tomorrow Windows" as an introduction.
  • "The Forgotten". Has a great little bit in it where Eight reluctantly prepares for the Last Great Time War.

    Have fun! :)

Seems to be working fine now, but just in case it happens again:

> Our good friend the fabulous writer Tommy Donbavand, having overcome throat cancer, has now had the shattering news that he has a tumour in his lung. As a result he continues to be unable to do the school visits which generated much of the income he needs to support his family.

> In 2016, the reading community rallied round when some Tommy’s friends released the original A TARGET FOR TOMMY, a collection of Doctor Who short stories. Now, some of us have decided to release a sequel – A SECOND TARGET FOR TOMMY.

> Including – for the first time ever! – the draft script for the Christopher Eccleston scene in Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary Special, Day of the Doctor, kindly provided by outgoing Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, and stories from over two dozen writers, every penny of profit raised will go to support Tommy while he works on making a full recovery.

> At the moment there are no plans for an ebook version of the book, and we cannot guarantee how long the paperback will be available, so please order now!

> An ebook of the first TARGET FOR TOMMY can however be purchased here: http://obversebooks.co.uk/product/a-target-for-tommy/

> Tommy’s blog, Tommy vs Cancer (http://www.tommyvcancer.com/) is back online too, and the book version of his original battle is still available to buy too (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071W4HX7K). Check them both out!

Thank you. It is generally true. Girls will date the best guy they can land (and believe they can keep), however they define "best." Whether that is looks, athleticism, intelligence, wealth, social status, ambition, or some other trait or, more likely, combination of traits. The girls here in Japan are actually very open and honest about it.

How many girls do you know that have actually said "I want a guy that is less attractive than me?"

It's not a bad thing either (check up on sexual selection, there is reason to believe that this is actually what drove the evolution of things like music and art in humans), it just means that if you are a guy you need to work at being your "best".

I usually recommend listening to the Main Range in release order, but since you're going one Doctor at a time, it might be better to focus on a specific Doctor/Companion era.

---

TELEVISION ERA: Stories set during and between Season 22 and 23.

Davros: An adventure set before Revelation of the Daleks. It focuses on the Doctor's and Davros' relationship, as well as his past on Skaro. I, Davros also explores the latter theme in great detail, and I highly recommend it. (The framing device takes place shortly after Revelation).

Lost Stories: Unproduced television scripts adapted for audio. These audios try to develop the Doctor's and Peri's relationship to the point we see them at in Season 23:

The Nightmare Fair, Mission to Magnus, Leviathan, The Hollows of Time

Paradise 5, Point of Entry, The Song of the Megaptera, The Macros

The Guardians of Prophecy, Power Play, The First Sontarans

Main Range Peri: Mostly stand-alone adventures:

Whispers of Terror, ...ish, The Reaping

Year of the Pig, Recorded Time..., The Space Race, Breaking Bubbles...

---

POST TRIAL: Stories set soon after Season 23. This is generally where the Sixth Doctor's edges are softened.

Miscellaneous: Various solo adventures:

The Wormery, Her Final Flight, I.D...., Peri and the Piscon Paradox, Trial of the Valeyard

Main Range Frobisher: A reunion with the Sixth Doctor's former comic companion:

The Maltese Penguin, The Holy Terror

Most of the single story region 2 discs can be bought on Amazon.UK for 6 GBP after shipping and converting to US Dollars they end up at $12 and change.

I started my collection by buying the Doctors Revisited set, that came with 1 story for each doctor. It doesn't have all the same extra features the regular releases have, but it was a nice booster pack to start my classic collection. And An Adventure in Space and Time came with An unearthly child. then I started watching Amazon and ebay for any stories to dip below $10 inc shipping had 70 ish stories by the time the tolerably priced region 1's dried up.. now i have a region free player and im watching Amazon.US and Amazon.UK for $10 or better region 2's

I don't know about unlocking a ps4, but a lot of DVD players are as simple as googling "dvd region unlock" and the model number/brand then opening the disk tray pressing a sequence of buttons on the remote to unlock a hidden menu and selecting 0 as your region so it will play any dvd region. keep in mind this is only for dvds, bluray players aren't so easy to unlock.

It's called Tales from Trenzalore. I enjoyed it but I would definitely like more, in any format.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but I enjoyed Summer Falls by Amelia Williams. Chapter 11 is the best, you'll cry your eyes out.

First off, PSA for any of you UK fans that need Season 12 and have a region free player (a Playstation 4 also works) Amazon in America still has it in stock, currently on sale for about $37. It’s our boring American packaging, but it comes with all most of the extras, you’re only missing the “Doctor Who Times” special.

Secondly, has anyone else listened to Big Finish’s Space: 1999 release yet? I thought it was really good, aside from the Australian guy’s accent dropping on occasion.

Depends on what kind of chronology you want. If you want chronological from the beginning of the universe to the end of time, pick up AHistory, which puts all of Doctor Who (up to like 2011) in chronological order and makes a lot of informed guesses into the placement of each story. This includes novels, comics, spinoffs, audios, all of it. It's textbook-size and is a great reference book.

There exists a website that attempts to order all of Doctor Who in a coherent chronological order from the TARDIS/Doctor's POV (and the accompanying spinoffs), and I'll try to find it, but there's way too much conflict, especially with stuff like the 7th and 8th Doctor, for there to be a coherent narrative. I'll look for it though.

I highly recommend The Forgotten. It has mini adventures for doctors 1-9 and ten is the main character.

Just a quick glance around eBay shows a number of the vanilla versions and US versions for about $50-70 USD. The US version is even still available on Amazon (even though it says "Tom Baker Years Complete Season One" instead of Season 12). You're not going to find the original LE version for cheap, but if you're just looking for the discs themselves, they're not too hard to find.

Even so, New-Who has set a precedent for the Doctor keeping track of his age, even if it doesn't match up with the Classic series or the expanded media.

Nine says he is 900, Ten says he's 906 when he regenerates. That's too short and too specific a time for him to just make up. Eleven then gives his age as 909 in Series 6, and 1103 after putting off going to Silencio. After this he stops dealing in specifics and his next recorded age is 1200 in "A Town Called Mercy" which he then reaffirms in "Day of the Doctor" with "1200 and something". He then spends 300 years on Trenzalore after sending Clara away the first time ("Where have you been for 300 years?") and then another 600 after sending her away the second (Blurb of this book says he spent a total of 900 years on Trenzalore).

Since "Rose", we know that the Doctor aged approximately 1200 years. How old he was before Rose is conjecture, as 900 could just be a number he pulled out of the air when he couldn't remember, but in terms of the revived series, it has taken 1200 years from his point of view.
