  • Proteus -- Buy Here -- A sort of zen adventure game where you awaken near an island, and it's left up to you to explore it. If you want. But nothing happens and the game doesn't end if you don't. Each island is procedurally generated, and there are no goals. You just walk around and look at the scenery, and sometimes stuff happens. It's pretty chill, though, and I've found it relaxing.
  • Myst Series:
    • realMyst Masterpiece -- Buy Here -- You find a book inscribed with the word "MYST". As you open it up, you find a mysterious moving image on the first page. You find it so compelling to reach out and touch it...
    • Riven: The Sequel to Myst -- Buy Here -- Your new friend Atrus asks for your help to rescue his wife, Catherine, from the dying world of Riven... (Note: may require fiddling to run on modern PCs)
    • Myst III: Exile -- Buy Here (not available digitally) -- You visit Atrus and his family at their new home when tragedy strikes, and you must rescue a stolen book in a forgotten land. (Note: may require fiddling to run on modern PCs)
    • Myst IV: Revelation -- Buy Here (not available digitally) -- You visit Atrus and his family again, but are knocked out by a small earthquake while watching Atrus' daughter, Yeesha. When you awaken, you find she has gone missing, and must find her before Atrus returns...
    • Myst V: End of Ages -- Buy Here -- You find yourself in K'veer, the place Atrus was confined in Myst and the beginning of Riven. As you explore, you meet Yeesha, who gives you a quest to free a slave race from their slavery...but you also meet Esher, a mystery man who hates Yeesha and wants you to know how she is tricking you.
    • Myst Online: Uru Live -- Download Here -- You (IRL you, not the you from the other 5 games) find yourself compelled to visit the desert, where you discover a near-ancient cleft home and a link to the old city of D'ni...
  • World of Zoo -- Buy Here -- You're a new zookeeper. You create animals, add them to each exhibit, play with them, feed them, and get access to new animals. The end. It's cute and kind of dumb. LOL
  • Bejeweled 3 -- Buy Here -- You know this game. It's like all the others. Anyway, there's a Zen Mode in the game where you can turn off the awesome music and instead turn on like ocean waves and shit, and binaural sounds to calm you and all that. That's why I included this game.
  • Kami -- Buy Here -- Fill the screen with a single color in the least amount of moves. The music is calming and the puzzles aren't very harsh. It's nice. :D
  • Knytt Series:
    • Knytt -- Download Here -- You are a knytt. You decide to go on a little adventure, when you're abducted by an alien! The alien proceeds to accidentally crash on another planet, and it's up to you to find all the alien's spaceship parts so you both can go home.
    • Knytt Stories -- Download Here (levels here) -- The story depends on what level you're playing, but you're usually playing as Juni and something happens to make you explore. This is one of the nicest games I have ever played, as well as one of the most relaxing.
    • Knytt Underground -- Buy Here -- You are Mi Sprocket, a mute sprite living in an underground world populated entirely by fairies and sprites. On a very special day, it is tasked to you to ring the six bells of fate scattered around this underground world...and if you don't, the world will end!
  • Tabletop Simulator -- Buy Here -- It's a game where you can play board/card/DnD/etc games by yourself or with your friends. That can be zen. Here are some of the games you can find on the workshop: Tatenoko, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Candy Land, Cards Against Humanity, Hanafuda, Monopoly, CTHULHU!!, Secret Hitler, Triple Triad, and The Hyrule Fantasy. I'd play a couple games of whatever with you, if that makes any difference.
  • Lyne -- Buy Here -- Make lines between all the colored shapes, but you can't cross the lines! It's a quiet little game with an interesting atmosphere. Also the pictures on all the achievements you can get are boxes with letters in them, meaning you can spell out words on your profile.

Hahaha, went through the same thing some time ago. A couple bits of advice:

  • In general, turn-based games will be your best bet, but by no means does this constrain you to RPGs (at the moment I'm playing Dungeons of Dredmor, which can be done entirely with the mouse). I did well with some titles like Gratuitous Space Battles and Dwarf Fortress (which although realtime, can be paused at any time and controlled by just the keyboard).

  • Consider puzzle or puzzle-like games

  • I seem to recall a few DS / 3DS games having alternate button presets specifically designed to allow the game to be played with just one hand, but can't remember off the top of my head which ones...

  • Also, macros/hotkeys can be very useful. Something like Auto Hotkey / X-Mouse Button Control combined with either a cheap gaming mouse with multiple buttons, or a keyboard-heavy game can allow you to map all the keyboard commands to the mouse, or map any complicated commands to one chunk of the keyboard.

  • In TF2 I can confirm from experience that it is possible to play Sniper, run up to a Sniping Spot by alternating between the mouse and keyboard, then just camp out using only the mouse. Obviously wouldn't work for competitive stuff, but on pubs it went surprisingly well. For extra credit, copy to your clipboard some text like, "You just got sniped by someone holding a baby" and hit Ctrl-V + Enter after every kill :D

  • Something I didn't discover for a very long time: any product similar to a Baby Bjorn is an absolute gamechanger. Hours at a time, with both hands free!

side scroller games... but honestly, if you are serious about gaming you need to buy THIS and THIS who the fuck cares about the flowers its artistic ok?

get steam and filter all games by MAC. If you get really ambitious, or have a really nerdy friend you trust. Have him partition your hardrive and install window 7 bootcamp natively onto your mac. you can choose what to start when powering up, and you can install ANYTHING for windows, on the windows side. Its like having two computers.

Yes it all cost money, but, hey, you asked and this is what Ive done. I play everything from borderlands 2, farcry, arma3, mount and blade, trine, just cause, and then I power up my mac side and edit videos with final cut pro. best of both worlds.

I have this. The Sentinel Zero-G from Cooler Master.

I was hesitant to buy a mouse from a place famous for things other than mice, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. It contains a weight set for those who are interested, about 8 buttons in total (the standard 3 for left/right/mousewheelin and a few more), on the fly DPI and profile switching, pretty in depth and unintrusive software for customizing it, and fancy colors (which can be disabled).

It also came with a free copy of shattered horizon when I got it. It's wired, and pretty inexpensive, and it also has a very nice profile so it fits into hands well.

It has a neat little LCD display which shows what profile you're in, along with a clan logo or something. It can also show you what DPI settings you currently have for when you're switching on the fly.

Highly recommended.

I just recently picked up Corsair Raptor LK1 keyboard for $25 from Frys. It's nothing fancy, but I'd say it's a pretty good buy for a keyboard I can roll my face across without getting those pings due to ghosting.

For mice, it's a little harder to recommend due to hand sizes and whatnot, but if you've got relatively small hands (or like small mice) like myself you might want to take a look at the CM Storm Spawn gaming mouse. Right now it's $60 marked down to $35 and has a $15 rebate on Amazon. Planning on picking one of these up for myself when I've got the cash. If you don't like the red coloring, there is a black version, but I don't think the buttons are programmable on it.

Here's some links for the products:

  • Corsair Raptor LK1 keyboard - Corsair, Frys
  • CM Storm Spawn Mouse - CoolerMaster, Amazon

Edit: I didn't feel right about recommending something that I didn't own, so I went ahead and bought that mouse (was planning to do so anyways). Amazon says it'll be here on the 15th, so if you're interested I'll come back and report my findings when it arrives.

You can easily play the other Final Fantasy games on your computer as well, though not through Steam. Square Enix just (like, yesterday) rereleased FF7 for the PC. You can buy that here for $10. FF7 is definitely one of the best FF games and probably RPGs ever made so this is a pretty good place for you to start.

The other FF games can be pretty easily played on your computer as well. You will need to download ROMs from a site like this one as well as an emulator. For FF 4, 5, and 6, you will find the ROMs in the SNES section, which can be played with ZSNES. You could also buy a 3D remake of FF4 for your DS. For FF 8 and 9 they are in the Playstation 1 section and can be played with pSX. The PS2 ones you should probably pay for but the older ones I doubt anyone cares too much since they aren't sold anymore. If you are unsure which to start with, start with 6, its the best.

Someone might recommend Breath of Death or Cthulhu Saves the World since they're the only turn based JRPGs on Steam I know of... don't bother. They've very cheap but very mediocre games and pretty much nothing like the FF games.

I have this one and love it.

However it's not USB. I've heard great things about the U320 as well.

If you want great sound quality paired with a great microphone, Sennheiser is awesome. I sound like a shill but I just really love their products and I've had that headset for almost 5 years with no issues. They're definitely on the pricey side but a good gaming headset is worth the investment in my opinion.

A game that truly I think will fit your bill is one that has been overlooked since it's release.. Bulletstorm. It was truly a kickback to the old school shooter with a modern day feel. It played well, it's story was passable but funny, you got rewarded for hitting "skill shots" things like ripping someones junk off or kicking them onto electrified pikes and "Shish-ka-bobing" them. The trailer that the devs released for their game was tame, and attempted to highlight the story, when I finished the campaign I felt like a "real" trailer should of been made. Shameless plug. But forreal, give it a try. It's cheap as fuck, and Im pretty sure the coop still works if thats anything you feel like trying).

I personally consider the Bioshock series my favorite, and I absolutely loved Metro 2033 and Last Light, and I recommend you play both. The game isn't all that similar to Bioshock, but it shares a claustrophobic feel and the constant dangers that lurk around each corner. Metro 2033 does have a stealth element to it, while Bioshock doesn't really, so if you don't like stealth to some extent, I would stay away. Either way, both of the metro games are amazing and have good stories.

Also, you said you wanted to learn more about Bioshock. If you haven't already, I highly recommend the book Bioshock: Rapture. It gives some more insight to what went into building Rapture, and I found it very interesting because I also wanted to learn more about the games.

EDIT: I also would recommend Singularity to people who like the Bioshock games. It is heavily inspired by it and is in a very similar vein.

Rise of Nations, it's a somewhat old but still pretty great RTS, looks like you can get Gold Edition pretty cheap on Amazon.

It has 24 (18+6 from the expansion) different nations from all around the world and you play from across 8 different ages, starting from the Ancient Age to the Information Age.

You can play it in singleplayer/multiplayer, with your standard random maps. It also has a singleplayer campaign called Conquer the World, which plays similar to Risk, there are five of these "campaigns" dealing with conquering the whole world, along with smaller campaigns such as Alexander the Great, Napoleon, the New World (America), and the Cold War.

Some of the soul-eating games from my Steam library:

  • Terraria

  • Mount & Blade Warband, along with its Napoleonic Wars expansion

  • Team Fortress 2, especially if you get involved in trading

  • Any of the Paradox grand strategy games (Crusader Kings 2, etc.), but I recommend downloading the demo first because they're pretty niche games

  • Civilization 4/5. In my opinion, 4 is a better game but 5 is better for beginners. If you want to decide for yourself, there's a pack on sale on Amazon that includes both, along with XCOM.

  • Dota 2, or really any MOBA like League of Legends of Heroes of Newerth

  • GTA San Andreas

  • Torchlight 1/2

  • The Binding of Isaac, if you're into that type of game

  • Saints Row: The Third

It was actually a light novel that was later adapted into a manga and then an anime, but it obviously draws inspiration from JRPGs and such. Slime enemies are really common in JRPGs, though those usually play the adventurer story straight, with slimes just being minor enemies. The anime you are asking about is unique because it subverts that common trope in a unique way.

[Tales of Symphonia], [Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book], [Recettear: an item shop's tale] and [The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky] are all good starting points for JRPG beginners. Those play the slime enemy straight, but have interesting spins on the fantasy genre in their own rights. Recettear for example is from the perspective of an item shop owner, while Ateier Sophie has you play as an Alchemist crafting items.

As for unusually wobbly protagonists, maybe look at [Snake Pass]. It's a platformer where you play a snake.

And for unusual recommendation, check out this book. It merges fantasy storytelling with RPG-style stats and character levels to form a devilishly delightful romp. Don't be fooled by the weird name and generic description, just trust me.

Oh, and watch KonoSuba.

We have these exact chairs at my work. They do last a long time but i have noticed some issues with the arms having trouble staying where you lock them over time. For a bigger person like myself and the lady described I think this would be a great option. I have had this chair for long hours of gaming. I have had it for about 3 years now and have had 0 complaints: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ETZRW8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
