1. NITOR Lighting LED Flame Effect Light Bulb, Flickering Fire Halloween Lights - Flat Black E26 Base - Vintage Calming Effect Light Atmosphere, Upside Down Function with Gravity Sensor (Pack of 2)

    Features:
  • ★A SMARTER DESIGN★ Our LED Flame Effect bulb has a matte black thermoplastic base so at nighttime, all you see is dancing flames, not a shiny white base. We include air vents at the bottom AND the top of the bulb to increase airflow and keep the bulb cool to the touch, even when operating 24hrs/day. Equipped with an E26 standard base, our bulb is shorter and wider than other flame lights, so it can fit in the vast majority of fixtures.
  • ★COMPATIBLE W/ DAYLIGHT SENSORS & TIMERS★ One of the top complaints about other LED flame bulbs is that they have 3 modes. When a timer or daylight sensor switches a 3-mode bulb on, a different mode will activate each time, meaning you will only get your desired flame effect every 3 days. NITOR Lighting’s LED Flame bulb has 1 mode only – flame. Consistent flow of natural flame effect throughout the entire bulb that truly does look like an actual flame.
  • ★GRAVITY SENSOR★ Thanks to a gravity sensor inside our LED Flame effect light, no matter which way your fixture is situated, our flame animation will always travel from bottom to top like real fire. Perfect for Wall Sconces, Patio Lights, Garden Lights, Home Decoration Lights, Side Lamps, Party Lights, Bar Lamps, Restaurant Lights, Crystal Chandeliers, Salt Lamp & more!
  • ★A BETTER FLAME EFFECT★ Our Flame effect lamp has a longer flame animation than other lamps. Some lesser quality flame lights will look more like a strobe light than a flickering candle, so we spent time creating an animation that closely emulates the calm serenity of a lit candle. You will also not see any individual diodes/beads while our flames dance away. We have smooth transitions that give off the correct 1700-1900K CCT of a natural flame.
  • ★HASSLE-FREE WARRANTY★ We provide quality products and stand behind our no-hassle warranty, plain and simple. If you have any issues with this product, even after the warranty period, email or call our customer service team and we will be happy to assist you. Customer service is our number one priority!

You can [adopt a star] (http://adoptastar.whitedwarf.org/) for her. Just be aware that this isn't an ACTUAL adoption/naming of a star, and it won't be listed with NASA or anything. It's just a nice novelty, but at her age, she'd be pumped.

If you haven't already, check out the [NASA Kids Club] (http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forkids/kidsclub/flash/#.VLIU5SvF-So) site. Lots of space-related activities and education!

You can buy her a [Meteorite kit] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039ZT0KY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0039ZT0KY&linkCode=as2&tag=ufowioutrspcgft2012-20) that also provides educational materials as well as meteorite samples

[Here's] (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/196434533/women-in-science-valentina-tereshkova?ref=related-3) a great poster of Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, to keep her enthused about space exploration.

And [here's] (https://www.etsy.com/listing/156254584/space-explorer-iron-on-patch) a cute iron-on patch to make her feel more official!

There are also a lot of great children's books about space, such as [You Are Stardust] (http://www.indiebound.org/book/9781926973357) and [Star Stuff: Carl Sagan and the Mysteries of the Cosmos] (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Stuff-Sagan-Mysteries-Cosmos/dp/1596439602/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1420958032&sr=8-3&keywords=cosmos+carl+sagan+book). Stephen Hawking also wrote a series of [children's books] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1416985840/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1416985840&linkCode=as2&tag=stephenhaw042-20) with his daughter Lucy that are incredibly adorable. And finally, [Born With A Bang: The Universe Tells Our Cosmic Story] (http://www.amazon.com/Born-Bang-Universe-Sharing-Children/dp/1584690321/) helps tell the tale of the beginning of our universe, narrated by the Universe itself!

Of course, there are also many neat planetariums on the market. She can have a star show every night! Invest in a telescope (if you haven't already), and take her out on a clear night to explore the stars with her own eyes.

It's really great that you're encouraging her in this. It's vital for future space exploration that we keep children's interest piqued when it comes to science and space. Heck, she may end up being the first woman on Mars! Kudos to you, and best of luck finding something perfect for your little space explorer, and I hope she feels better soon! :)

Friend needed some hidden cameras to keep an eye on valuables while contractors were working on his house. This is what I came up with since you may be interested. ^Please ^don't ^use ^for ^creeping

WIFI Smoke Detector Camera If I truly needed one like this with this much viewing area i would get this one. It has a wide angle and is nice. it has a wifi connection. Ok Reviews and most bad ones are it doesn't look real. but who really looks at the smoke detectors and if they are then its likely too late for them. They also make the amazon choice camera below.

Products from LUOHE If i needed more I would for sure buy a couple of these. Great reviews and a lot of them. They are even useful if I don't need them for recording. BUT you can't have too many of these USB plugs in the house or it starts to look odd. The battery would be useful even if not using for a camera.

Mini Micro Cam Portable Security Camera This one is an amazon choice. Its the cheap option and not as convenient. If you need to place a TON of cameras then these would work well. Just will be a pain to check them all. These would also work for an area that has no WIFI as the other one won't be useful without wifi.

WiFi Mini Hidden Spy Camera This is the one I would prefer. It has a wifi connnection. Not many reviews but it was JUST placed on amazon so it hasn't had time for people to give out reviews. Not many LED so its night vision may not be the best. The one above may be better for the night vision. But I would like it because it notifies you if you have someone walk in front of your camera. That would be nice because if that happened you could just call the contractors and tell them to leave. You can only view past footage but that's likely all you care to see.

My Thoughts: when I started to look at these cameras I didn't expect to find things like this. I know how small cell phone cameras are and I'm still surprised at how small these are. I tried looking for some just still picture ones and I wasn't able to find them. All of them can do video recording because its so cheap to make them that way now.

Edit: words

Oi. Disclaimer: I haven't bought a book in the field in a while, so there might be some new greats that I'm not familiar with. Also, I'm old and have no memory, so I may very well have forgotten some greats. But here is what I can recommend.

I got my start with Koblitz's Course in Number Theory and Cryptography and Schneier's Applied Cryptography. Schneier's is a bit basic, outdated, and erroneous in spots, and the guy is annoying as fuck, but it's still a pretty darned good intro to the field.

If you're strong at math (and computation and complexity theory) then Oded Goldreich's Foundations of Cryptography Volume 1 and Volume 2 are outstanding. If you're not so strong in those areas, you may want to come up to speed with the help of Sipser and Moret first.

Also, if you need to shore up your number theory and algebra, Victor Shoup is the man.

At this point, you ought to have a pretty good base for building on by reading research papers.

One other note, two books that I've not looked at but are written by people I really respect Introduction to Modern Cryptography by Katz and Lindell and Computational Complexity: A Modern Approach by Arora and Barak.

Hope that helps.

I used to love my TrackMan FX Marbles (I had two), but for the exact reasons why I hate that evil bastard you linked to. ;\^P

  • Big ball over tiny ball. The small ball means less sensitivity. The large ball on the FX (with the small hole so you could use your thumb as a brake with varied pressure making it easy to vary your control) was brilliant. Small ball means very little control.

  • Thumbs are not good for pointing! There a reason you point with your index finger and a reason you use your index finger on a touch pad. You may have more rotation in your thumbs versus fingers (90° vs 45°) but most people are used to pointing with their index fingers. Your finger follow the natural extension of your arm. It's perfectly line-of-site down the arm. Since the thumb rests on the side of the hand, drawing a + comes out like an X.

Thumb trackballs are among the most uncomfortable methods of control I've ever used.

Of course, this is all personal opinion. Obviously they're popular since they're still selling them. If I could find an FX for under $75 I might even consider going back, but I've grown so accustomed to mice that when I got a finger trackball for work (and at home) recently, I ended up returning one and giving the other away because I couldn't game or get comfortable with them.

> because it says that learning something is a form of punishment.

Not necessarily. Think of it like slide rules vs. a modern off-the-shelf laptop.

Reliable calculators are one of the most basic, readily available forms of electronics. Tools that allow humans to automate work that is of an insane level of complexity are commoditized to the degree that they come packaged with a phone, a camera, and a fashionable Hello Kitty logo case.

Do you really need to understand in detail how to perform such calculations manually, using an obsolete tool? Or can you safely assume that we've advanced to the point as a species where, if you're broadly familiar with certain basic principles, you can rely on tools ("crutches"?) to handle the fundamentals while you go off and do or learn bigger and better things? Sure, there are low-level concepts in every field that form part of a core set of knowledge worth knowing, but a lot of the "in-my-day-we-did-xyz" seems a bit like keeping around a random numbers reference book (the reviews are awesome though).

FYI, for amazon links, you only need the following:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010M9KRHO/

The "OnetwoUSB-Display-Function-Silver-warranty" part can be useful for you to keep track of what each link is to, but the rest of the stuff is tracking and other meta information that's mainly useful only for amazon's data crunching purposes. There can be other info in there, too, like if someone refers you to a product, they can get a referral credit (if they're set up for it), which you may or may not want to support.

In case anyone is wondering "whatever happened to Commodore" I highly recommend reading "Commodore: A Company On The Edge" by Brian Bagnall (ISBN 978-0973864960, Amazon, B&N, Sony, Kobo, etc. etc.). It does a great job telling the story of the birth of Commodore as we knew it, from the invention of the 6502 at MOS Technology to right up to the creation of the Amiga.

I'm wondering whatever happened to Commodore after they were turned into a PC company and promised Commodore OS Vision.

No offense but those battery packs with built in chargers are not great about generating a charge. They will help the pack discharge a little more slowly on a sunny day, but you usually have to leave it in direct sun for 12-20 hours to get a full charge. Get a panel like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EQW0IP4/ref=twister_B019SHMBP2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
with a separate battery pack, and you'll be in much better shape.

So the solution for camping and common power outages are pretty close to the same.

If you live somewhere where the power goes out often, get yourself a 12v adapter for your machine (varies by machine), buy a AGM deep cycle trolling motor battery (~$100) and a Battery Tender. Plug the battery tender to the wall, hook it to the battery, then hook the 12v adapter to your machine. Congratulations: the battery tender keeps the battery topped off, the CPAP runs off the battery, and you never miss a beat when the power goes out. If you're looking to lose power for more than one night (say you regularly have to wait out hurricanes) you'll want a bigger capacity deep cycle battery if you want to run the humidifier.

For car camping just leave the battery tender at home and turn off the humidifier. Fully charged battery should easily last you 5 nights.

If you're more of a backpacker/rough camper pick up a large USB battery pack that supports 12V out. People with Philips Respironics machines report that pack gives them 2 nights without humidifier. If you have a Philips machine it actually comes with the right size barrel plug, so no 12v adapter needed.

>I looked at purchasing a couple of these a few weeks ago and found this issue, I was lucky that I noticed this before purchasing and was able to find one that only had the one setting: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078BYVSKV/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

$0.67 - Aborted Babies in Heaven: Hear Our Stories (Paperback)

Hm.

EDIT: Aw. The (unintentional) interest in this book made Amazon's algorithms bump the price back up to $16.

FYI, for amazon links, substitute "www" with "smile" to have a portion of your shoppig go to charity at no extra cost:

The book on the counter is Tasting Beer. Based on the colours, I would say it's this book.

Note: I'm not a creepy stalker. I just like mysteries. I think that in the case of the upside-down beer bottle spice rack, the solution is a beer connoisseur.

You know how sometimes you try something, and it just feels "right"? You come into contact with it, and something twangs deep inside your gut, and you know you'll never find better than that. My first and only trackball mouse is the only computer component that fits in that category for me.

Logitech's brilliant-but-cancelled Trackman Marble FX(ridiculously overpriced link) is the standard that all other trackball mice should strive to achieve. Amazingly comfortable, no sense-memory learning curve, ridiculously precise -- best they ever made. Used mine for the better part of a decade (though it was terrible for many games). When it finally gave up the ghost, I discovered to my great lamentation that Logitech had discontinued it. I am pathologically unable to use any of their trackball thumb mice, so now I'm back to a traditional mouse. It saddens me to know that I'll likely never have another one, but at least I can tell my future grandkids that there was a mouse like that.

Yes.

These are the drives you want if you're looking for a workhorse that will be doing a lot of rewriting.

I stand corrected, I have two and neither is 35k. I carry the 14k in my purse everywhere, and the 23k in the glovebox. A bit more than the 35k I thought originally, oops.

The 14k is great, and for the price a must have. I get just under 7 charges on it, a galaxy s2 gets right around 6. I imagine modern phones get more like 5, but that still goes a long way.

u/taterbizkit · 1 pointr/geek

I loooooooved my old Logitech Trackball MarbleMan FX. It looked like something out of an HR Giger painting -- but that was a bonus because it scared people away from using my desk when I wasn't there.

When they were discontinued, I bought four of them. The problem is that a small plastic nub that held the ball in place tended to wear out and break after a year or so. So I haven't had one for a decade. And you'll see the "new" price of $399 on that amazon page...
