Why not just get a decent Android tablet? My Nexus 7 has a great receiver in it. CoPilot Live is a great nav app. For amazing accuracy, (~3 ft.) I can use a GPS/GLO Bluetooth receiver with it.
They don't really exist in that format, or if they do, they're extremely expensive and specialized. GPS is unidirectional, meaning a GPS device knows its own position, but can't transmit that position back to anything else without another component, typically a cell radio or something like that. While [a GPS receiver around the size of a quarter is feasible] (https://www.amazon.com/GlobalSat-BR-355-Serial-GPS-Receiver/dp/B000VUFGF8) , the data that such a receiver gathers is useless without some way of storing it (for later analysis) or sending it back to you (for real time analysis). Likewise, the power consumption of most GPS devices is far greater than what a quarter-sized battery could provide for a week. The transmitter part takes up quite a bit more space and a ton more battery life, which just compounds the issue.
Most GPS units are geared towards outdoor enthusiasts, and therefore aim to get as accurate track coverage as possible (thereby reducing battery life). If all you needed was a point location every couple hours or something, the battery life becomes less of an issue, but you'd still need the transmission component and to know how to connect them together to do what you want.
So, in short, relax your requirements for size, battery life, and portability and you may be able to piece something together (with a considerable degree of know-how, considering these things aren't just a single component).
Well, the simplest/cheapest solution might just be to get an external battery for your existing device.
If you really want a separate device, a GPS data logger would be a simple device that does one thing only: track your route and create a .gpx file. You'd then connect it to your laptop via bluetooth.
For example;

The model I have is the Wintec WBT-201. I pretty much don't use it anymore, I use a spare android phone with external battery.

If scaring them is enough pick up one of these $5 microprocessors along with a note about this being a GPS tracking device...etc. Personally I wouldn't want to do this do to possible reprisals.
Maybe buy a burner phone and track location via Google Maps.. at least you would be able to see their route, where they stopped etc..
Get a security camera or repurpose an old phone into an IP security camera - instructions here
With some creativity maybe you could get video of the perps and at least be able to give something to the police or the Postal Inspector.. and you would know what they look like, maybe what type of vehicle and keep an eye out for it.
Also you could rig the box a bit, shaving cream bomb, glitter bomb, dog crap...etc . Nothing that could do damage, but let them know you are done with them... or even one of those cheap magnetic door alarms and moving the box makes it go off...
Good luck OP! I'm surprised you didn't get more replies.
You can try something like this:

It uses the cell phone network to communicate it's location via SMS and requires a sim card and a cell phone plan.
The nice thing about the SPOT tracker is that it relies on satellites instead of the cell network and will work in areas where there is no cell coverage.
