Weight penalty is too high for me that way with no real upsides going that route. You've got the storage of a rear bag with the weight of a rack.

You list the downside of a trunk bag as it swaying, but my revelate terrapin doesn't move at all. The holder / drybag system is pretty ingenious and easy to use too. I wouldn't call it cheap, but you get what you pay for.

If you are going to go that route anyway I recommend some Voile Straps for securing the dryback to the rack. I have a collection of them in different lengths and haven't found many things I can't make stick to my bike or rack somehow with them.

Alternatively you could just get a proper trunk bag for your rack. I've got the older smaller version of this and I find it handy for picnics and beer runs and what not as it's pretty well insulated. That's just a nice bonus though, you could use it for non food items too.

Some ol' SKS Chromoplastic P45's. Originally wanted to get some Velo Orange mudguards, but those were on sale. Was concerned about rattling, but it's been quiet so far.

I feel like they work best when your tire size is 10mm less than the max rated tire size, 35mm is just plush enough for my intended riding. Amazing how much gunk the fenders cover you from.

Thank you!

I wanted race face chesters but I couldn’t find the color I wanted 😩. These have amazing review and are super nice riding.

Cool! After a helmet (I have a Specialized Align, works great) and maybe bike shorts (I've been testing out cheap ones on Amazon, so far I like the Santic ones best https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FF1GML4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ), I'd get a water bottle and water bottle cage. Next I think would be flat tire stuff: patch kit, tire irons, spare tube, and pump. And equally important, instruction how to change a flat. Maybe the shop does classes, or the community bike advocacy group may. That's probably about it! Oh maybe also sunblock haha. Weird places will burn, like the top of your knees.

Thanks! That's what I was hoping for.

> Use fenders

These are arriving Monday! Aside from function, I think they'll look great against the purple frame.

As for cleaning, I'm lucky enough to work at a shop where I can wash it down upon arriving daily.

It's a Giant Revolt 0 with a few upgrades. I swapped the saddle to a chinese carbon one similar to the S Works Power saddle, but with slightly thicker padding. I had a Sram Red Quarq from a previous bike, so I fitted that as well.

The stock rotors were 160mm, but I swapped those out for 140s. I have good carbon road wheels for my Propel which has 140mm rotors and I wanted to be able to put them straight in if I want to do a road ride on it. As a 70 kg rider I've found no loss in braking performance from the switch, but the same may not be true for heavier riders.

This last upgrade replaced the stock alloy stem and flared alloy gravel handlebar which didn't suit my preferred riding position. I played with a couple of different stems and bars to get the right fit, before committing to the setup here.

The headset cap in this photo is also a gopro mount, but I'll soon be replacing that. I'll fit a spoon-style mount with a gopro mount underneath.

Gear Breakdown:

  • Helmet w/ open/close vents, goggles with yellow lens
  • Under Armour Cold Gear long sleeve thermal base layer
  • padded cycling shorts
  • fairly lightweight gloves (used with Bar Mitts)
  • Running Room wind breaker
  • rain pants I'd recommend a more form fitting one, but these also double as my motorbike pants in summer so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
  • technical ski/snowboard socks
  • insulated hikers (not pictured)

Items Right of the Socks Are For When It's Below -20°C (-4°F)

  • Thermal leggings
  • long sleeve fleece

    BONUS

MEC Cycling Backpack The design of this thing is amazing for cycle commuting.

No, I do not wear a balaclava or anything on my face. I find them a pain to breath through. Once it's cold enough my breath just freezes on my beard and creates an ice balaclava anyway.

Yup.

HED belgium, with WTB byways, the tape is the stans tubeless. Seems well. One slow leak from a goat head and old sealant - threw some fresh stans and went on a ride, all good.

HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend some sort of not hand pump or compressor, personally I use the Birzman.

I've been using a combination of a helmet mounted night eyes 1200 and handlebar mounted cygolite metro 850 for night time gravel/trail riding. It's been pretty solid and it cost me less than $100 total for the dual setup. I really feel like the helmet mounted light adds a lot on the trail.

It's this one here

You would need to use 16 ounce bottles anything bigger and it'll be an tiny bit of a struggle. Also thank you 😊

I think you need the 3 pawl version DT Swiss Mountain Freehub Body Black, No End Caps, SRAM XD, 3 Pawl https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZQF6HF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_2d5YCbCCVV7DD

You also might need different end caps.

u/drosser · 1 pointr/gravelcycling

Any rubbing? I got the SKS B53 and found them just too close to the tires for comfort. For over winter, I might get slightly smaller, slicker tires because OMG you NEED fenders in Oregon.

u/GentleHammer · 2 pointsr/gravelcycling

Nope, it's already taped, and taped well they (REI) said. I bought this kit from REI and these stems.

u/blankblank · 2 pointsr/gravelcycling

I have these on my drops. $50 seemed like a lot of spend on a small piece of neoprene with a zipper, but when it's really cold and windy, nothing else keeps the chill off your hands.

With biking, the name of the game isn't bundling up in a snowsuit, it's keeping the wind from robbing you of your body heat.
