Entrusting a hologram to raise your child seems like the logical extension of letting TV "raise your child" today. I can totally see why people would not want to do it. Doctors and Moriarties aside, they're not that smart or human.

The show isn't consistent about it, but I feel like the intention with holograms has always been that people can totally tell they're not real, other than the exceptions above. It'd be like sticking your kid in a video arcade all day.

Also, here's a really good novel partly about a woman who was raised by artificial intelligences. It's technically a sequel but only loosely; the main characters were barely in the first book.

I partly agree with Roderick's "There's no path to understanding it, I don't think."
That said, this mini series may be a good starting point:
The Promise - 2011

Also, all that 70's Western German Radicalism stuff is super interesting, here are a few links:

Not 100% what you're describing, but the John Scalzi novel Redshirts may very well fulfill that fantasy for you. https://www.amazon.com/Redshirts-Novel-Three-Codas-Winner-ebook/dp/B0079XPUOW/ref=sr_1_1

There are still a few prints available :) Mine was from a run that Jonathan England did for ThinkGeek but I don't see those at their site anymore. The one on Amazon should hopefully be the same or similar quality of print.

I’m sorry you lost your pin. That’s such a bummer.

For everyone else with pins on their bags or hats or whatever, get yourself some of these locking pin backs:
