DW-5600E is the basic (but still great!) no frills square.
Tells the time, has alarms and stop watches, counts up and down, an auto backlight, and calendar to 2039. It's dive rated to 200 meters, and has an electronic luminescent backlight, much like indiglo if you have a Timex.

GWM-5610 is all of the above, along with world time, and has the two biggest features for some: solar charging and atomic radio syncing.
For many, this is the THE "square." It's robust, self sufficient, and has a classic look without looking too dated or too ultra modern. The display is slightly different than the 5600E.

GLX-5600 is most similar to the budget 5600E above but has an additional bit of display for tide and moon information. Still as tough, still as cool looking.

GLS-5600 is a more recent, stylish variant of the 5600E. It come in 4 neat colors (black, white, green, and sand) and features a moving seconds complication on the face. Also, it features a "Low Temp LCD," this LCD is rated to go to -20 C. Honestly as you're wearing it on your person, a normal 5600E can go pretty cold as it also has your body heat. Possibly most importantly for some people, this model comes standard with strap adapters and a really comfy clothes NATO strap standard.

GWM-5610-1BJF is the Japanese only, blacked out model of the radio/solar 5610. These can be imported pretty easily through Amazon, so of cost isn't an issue, don't let the import bother you. The Japanese models also usually feature slightly more supple, softer resin straps and a screwback case, like on a mechanical time piece.

While not exclusively a 5600, if you need a big honkin' watch, the GX-56 is basically a thick 5600. Huge buttons and case, has all of the features of a 5610 with a cool moving seconds graphic like the GLS.

Many of these can be found in various colors and feature variants, so as a recap/guide:

5600 - standard square G Shock

5610 - radio/solar square model

GLX - surfing/tide model

GLS - stylish colors, comes with NATO strap

GX-56 - huge "King" G Shock

BB after model number - blacked out model

JF after model number - Japan import

Hopefully this helped. I had a lot of fun making this.

If you want any watch with both a compass and temperature readings, it sounds like you'd be better off with a Casio Pro-Trek. They have more sensors than G-shocks, and are normally cheaper.

Here's one that costs only 50$ and has a compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer. That being said, it's not solar powered, and it has a negative display, which some people dislike (negative displays are slightly harder to read than positive ones).

If you want to go cheaper or really want a positive display, here's a 40$ one, but it does not have a compass or tough solar.

If you have your heart set on a g-shock. The only one with a compass and thermometer is this one, which, at 180$, does break the bank.

If you don't really care about a compass or thermometer that much and really want a g-shock, I can personally vouch for this at 40$, it's a steal. Other commonly recommended G-shocks are this one because it's less bulky and this one because not only is it less bulky, but it's one of the cheapest G-shocks with multiband-6 (for automatically syncing itself to the correct time) and tough solar.

My overall recommendation to you would be the 50$ Pro-Trek, as I think it fits your needs the best for cheap. However if you are against negative displays, it might not be for you.

Edit: Also the watch you chose is pretty cool. I just saw it was only 62$ on Amazon, that's a great option as well.

In that case, I would recommend this Rangeman. Listed at $225 (randomly, your limit) but I'm sure you could offer around $200 and make a deal.

That's much nicer than the regular rangeman, too. Carbon fiber band an a metal keeper. (Those are basically the only two improvements over the regular Rangeman.) That's worth the little extra you'd pay though.

If that doesn't work for you, then in my order of preference for a military bf:

  1. regular Rangeman
  2. regular Mudman (between 1 and 2 might depend on his branch).
  3. This GD-350. Round but not too round. Black with negative display. Bigger numbers, and the updated neg. display (more readable). (also only $100). (this one is on my short list).

There are a bunch of other models, and basically any of them would fit your qualifications. Pick the one you like seeing him in best! :)

I was looking for a Rangeman for a long time. I haven't seen many in Germany especially the Japanese import ones. First, I wanted get a GW-9400BJ-1JF but they are crazy expensive.

I was randomly checking a second hand website and came upon the one that I bought. The price that he was asking for seemed reasonable, we bargained a bit and I pulled the trigger. I am glad that I did. It is Jap spec and had Carbon Fiber band. It only doesn't have a negative display.

I really want to do a Display conversion. I have always wanted to have a Rangeman with negative display. After using it like the way it is for a while, I am going to a Stealth Conversion. I original bezels around 25€, so I will go for it and try it.

But I am afraid of doing the Negative Display Conversion. Because there are somethings that I do not really understand. For example, why can we not just flip the original polarizing film the other way around, and use the original polarizing film? I haven't seen anyone doing a conversion on a Rangeman. I am not feeling really confident to dissemble one either! Did anyone try doing it? Can anyone help me out?

I like the normal classic black DW-5600-E1V the best out of the 5600s. It's cheap ($40), a neutral color to match any outfit, tough, no frills. It was my first Gshock and the one that got me started collecting.

https://www.amazon.com/Casio-G-shock-DW5600E-1V-Shock-Resistant/dp/B000GAYQKY

Be aware that you can also buy different color bezels and straps if you want to customize your watch. Out if all the models the 5600 has the most customizability options.

http://www.pacparts.com/model.cfm?mfg=Casio&model_id=dw-5600&row_start=21&action=search_model

This site has a list and pics of all the 5600s. Click on one you like and you can buy the bezel and or strap. It is also good for browsing for a style you like and getting the model name to search for a site that carrys it.

This site also has spare bezels and bands. It's also UK based I believe so might be a better option for you.

The GWXs I don’t recall if they were declared. To be honest I don’t remember the paper work, if there was paperwork. The second order was declared. The values were in Japanese Yen.

Your GWX is nice. I’ve seen it in person. Shiny black is cool. As for a better place? I’ve only ever dealt with Amazons third party sellers.

If you go that route here’s the link: Casio Men's GWX-5600-1JF G-Shock G-Lide Tough Solar Radio Controlled Watch [Japan Import] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003O68EMS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gi22Cb96P6CMB

The seller “Last Samurai” is the seller of my second order.

Wow i like both of them for sure. I love my gd-400. I’ll def pick one of those when it’s time to retire it. GD400MB-1

Differences... between the 1ER and the 1 DAL difficult to tell from the images but there are a number of sites that describe the meanings of the model codes, here is one;

https://www.watchbattery.co.uk/Casio-Watch-Model-Identify.shtml

And here is another

https://www.buywatchesonline.com.au/casioblog/what-do-the-casio-prefix-codes-mean/

Based on the different elements of the code (1DAL vs 1ER) the codes indicate they are both black (1), and I'm pretty sure that ER means European Release. I couldn't find anything indicating what DAL means specifically but it seems to refer to another 'region'.

I think they are basically the same and just have different designations as they are destined/intended for different regions.

Hope this helps.

u/BKA_Diver · 1 pointr/gshock

Too soon to say for sure. I love how it looks, which if I'm being honest is usually the driving force for anything I buy.

At the right angle I can see the digits perfectly. But they're still pretty small. Granted I'm coming off wearing a Suunto D4i and a Timex Expedition Grid Shock watch which both have huge digits and faces/dials.

About the Timex... I really loved that watch, but when it broke it was completely unfixable. The slots on the body of the watch that held the band pins basically dry rotted out and broke. I wasn't going to drop another $60-ish on a watch that was going to break again in 2 years. I went with a G-Shock because they have a reputation of lasting forever.

The glass it like a flippin mirror though.

I haven't dug into the atomic feature to sync it with whatever antenna is within range of my location. When I set the time I just picked the first city that show my local time.

I don't hate it but I don't 100% love it. I'm actually look at other watches already, but I'll probably talk myself off the ledge before I actually commit to another buy.

The Rangeman is really nice but it's also very large and thick so it can interfere a lot with daily tasks. Slimmer profile watches are better for not getting in the way. I would check out the 5600 or 6900 series watches:

u/mbrown29 · 1 pointr/gshock

Thanks for the reply, reddit455. You were right. The watch just needed more sun time. It's hard to believe being out in the sun all day on the river and at the beach didn't give it even enough to get past half charge. I ordered this charger and it solved my issue. Before using this device, my battery never got past 1/2 charge, according to the dial/meter. After a night of charging on this, the battery meter was at FULL. After a few hours off the charger, the meter said about 3/4 full. That night I put it back on the charger (this was last night). Today, I wore the watch for a full 14 hours and the meter is still sitting at FULL. This is either a huge battery or a slow charging watch...or I'm just expecting too much of the watch. Not sure... But thanks for the advice, stranger. I just needed to charge it more.

I have the green version of the 7900 and like it a lot. The second watch listed i have played with before and didn't like it because i felt like the buttons were kind of hard to press, compared to the 7900 where the buttons are completly exposed.

For that price I'd personally get the G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400. It has all the sensors and features you'll find in that ProTrek, with G-Shock toughness. Only thing is that it's digital only unlike that ProTrek, so if you specifically want an analog-digital watch then it's not ideal.

I couldn't find any information about a PRW-510. The ProTrek PRG-510 does seem decent. However it's an older model, with older sensors. In 2013 Casio upgraded the ABC sensors to new and improved "Triple Sensors Version 3". So nowadays it's worth getting a watch with v3 sensors. The ProTrek PRG-270 is really good value, it's only $100 but you get those latest ABC sensors. The only features it really lacks are solar power and atomic time (which syncs with radio for accurate time, though it doesn't work everywhere in the world). The aforementioned Rangeman has all that. Though again these are all digital and I don't know if you actually prefer analog.

This is a tough question without knowing a few additional bits about what you want/need.

What features on the watch do you want or need?

Why is the frogman so attractive to you?

You can get a ton of watch for half the cost of a frogman. But it's hard to narrow down if you don't have any specific direction to go in.

I'd suggest a rangeman personally

Unless your boyfriend is a watch geek he likely just means that he wants a g shock square, and not the specific model. There are lots of different models and colors. Just google g shock squares.

Edit:
This is the standard model. If your boyfriend is interested technology you have one that is solar powered and syncs with an atomic clock via radio signals, my personal favorite.
