I'm no expert so take this for what it's worth.
I found the antenna is only a small piece of the puzzle. I've been using this PCB antenna indoors for the types of things you mentioned & found it works well.
What made a huge difference for me, with every antenna I tried, was getting the antenna away from the computer, HackRF, and other sources of noise with some quality coax. LMR-400 works well for me. Low quality coax just doesn't cut it.
I found my HackRF worked best with a short USB cable. Anything over a meter & the throughput would start to fall off. This may be more a byproduct of my specific hardware than anything else however. A ferrite core on the usb cable also helps keep the signal clean.
Not sure what you mean in terms of white elephant, but there's good reviews on Amazon detailing some of the good and bad of the device:
http://smile.amazon.com/RF-Explorer-Handheld-3G-Combo/dp/B00GM72CGU
Not much on the 6g portion though. It does appear they are still working on smoothing out the band a little for accuracy, but it's just fine for the sort of work you'd be using it for.
You can see past updates for pc software and firmware here: http://j3.rf-explorer.com/news
You probably want a discone antenna since they're pretty wide band.
Take a look at one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Taurus-D1000-Scanner-General-Coverage/dp/B019UMHNQ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459224042&sr=8-1&keywords=discone+antenna
If you're going to be that close to the transmitter then you might just want to go with a rubber duck antenna. https://www.amazon.com/JEFA-Tech-9dBi-Rubber-Antenna/dp/B006JPCOGI I use this one for simple testing and it works alright
An RP-SMA to SMA adaptor is a must, as is a set of attenuators. You can pick up 3db-30db individually on eBay for less than $20.
You need an adapter. Likely a SMA Male to RP-SMA Female.
So do you see any difference between the one from antratek (linked on the greatscottgadgets site) and the one on Amazon sold by Nooelec Inc (with extra stuff).
They both have the CE Logo on the Aluminumcase (what should only be allowed to put on by the "original" producer).
