OK, this was a pain in the ass. lol I tried super glue a washer to the jack, but it wasn't quite strong enough. With a little force I could dislodge the washer, and I didn't think it would hold up over time. I had to get a different jack, one that would accommodate a bigger hole.

And if I would have bothered to look up a mod guide for these headphones, it is pretty much the only jack recommended to use because of the issues I ran into. It actually ended up working perfectly, and the fit is so tight no need for any glue or anything.

Thanks for the good info! I actually found exactly what I was looking for on Amazon the other day; a USB Type-C cable that's specifically made for my set of headphones. It has a "digital audio decode module" on it, and is listed as working with Samsung, Huawaii, Motorola, Nexus, etc. so I'm hoping it'll actually work with my phone. I've ordered one, and it should be here in the next few days. Will report back if I have any success :)

I'm unsure about the quality of that soldering iron so hopefully someone else can give you advice on that, but I recently did a mod on my superlux hd688b's where I replaced the male jack with a female jack, so that might be something to look into. For soldering, look at tutorials online or just on youtube, and I would suggest to practice making good connections with the wires onto the jacks before you do the real thing. Make sure you fully heat up your surface and the wire to by putting the tip on it and holding it there, then bring the solder to it and let it flow around the connection. Here is a wiring diagram for a 3.5mm male jack. If you have trouble identifying what to connect where, look for a common wire that connects to both speakers on each side, and that will be your ground. Feel free to ask for some clarification on anything, I know this response is kinda all over the place lol.
I haven't seen a locking 3.5mm, but I also haven't exactly looked too hard. You might consider using the mini xlr socket like in the video, and then using a cable like this one, if you really want locking
I'm sure you can find other 1/4 to 1/8 cables, unless you really wanted a custom one like you said, sleeved. https://www.amazon.com/Hosa-CMS-110-Stereo-Interconnect-Cable/dp/B000068O36 And i'm sure you could pull off the 1/4 thing, might be a tight fix/awkward one.
This should work perfectly: https://www.amazon.com/MEE-audio-Replacement-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00K36XWG0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1499026228&sr=8-2&keywords=mee+audio+cable
Just so you know, there are two ports on a plane occasionally, but they are 2xmono - like with these guys: https://amzn.com/B002I9WCWK
I used this one I think : https://www.amazon.com/Philmore-Isolated-Stereo-Female-Headphone/dp/B00OGLCR3W/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=3.5mm+socket&qid=1565848070&s=gateway&sr=8-6 or something very similar. Thank you.
Brainwavez HM5. I use them for just about anything they can fit on. I have had them on my DT990s for about 3yrs now, and the only problem I have is the black velour picks up my cat's white hair like the mother of all magnets. Otherwise, stupid comfortable.
I also have them on my HD280s and ATH 50x.

Just a clarification here, those are the oval pads. Brainwavs makes round pads that properly fit the Beyers (like these https://www.amazon.com/Brainwavz-Round-Hybrid-Memory-Earpad/dp/B07FT9BM4L/).
I have the Brainwavs, Dekoni, and others btw. I would personally try and get some Beyer T70 or dt-1770 pads if you can get a decent price.
I also tried some ZMF leatherpads on them and didn't like what it did to the sound.
Link to the appropriate sized shaft collars for anyone interested I used two each side, but I’ve seen people just use one at the top as well. Personal preference.

I don't know if I've seen one with a screw that's small. I've used a smaller circuit mounted one and glued it instead of soldering it to a board. That's the smallest footprint I can think of.

Just those, pulled apart. I cut off the end I didn't need and stripped enough to solder. Obviously not headphone/speaker wire, so hopefully r/headphones doesn't crucify me, but it's better than killing a driver.
