I did this a couple of times for some of my really old pocket/micro games. These are perfect candidates because they tend to have smaller paper maps and a low number of counters. I have a very big magnetic whiteboard. One of the games we did was Ogre. This is the perfect game because we were able to keep track of the Ogre systems on the white board to the side of the map.
I used printable magnetic strips. For example https://www.amazon.com/Cricut-2002744-Printable-Magnetic-Sheets/dp/B00X5O9DWY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1499116827&sr=8-3&keywords=Printable+magnetic (note: I don't recall if this is the brand I used. This is just an example of the sort of thing. Look on Amazon or at a local craft/hobby shop for a bigger selection)
I downloaded an image of the counters from BBG or an Ogre fan site and printed them on the magnetic strips. All I had to do was cut out the counters. I used standard magnets to hold the map up. I will say that sometimes those printable magnetic counters had a hard time sticking through the map, especially near the folds.
I also did this with one other small task force games micro game. I can report that it worked but it was a bit flakey for us. Maybe a little research into printable magnets can help you find stronger stuff. We decided we enjoyed playing across a table top and gave up with the vertical approach. Also, any counters that are double sided need to now be 2 counters. Keeping track when flipping a counter can get cumbersome. In a game where a counter can flip back and forth several times during the game it really slows down game play.
I originally looked into mounting my counters but 1) most of my games have double sided counters, and 2) these printed counter barely stayed up. I imagine glueing actual counters to the strips would make them even heavier.
So I can report that it is doable. I only did 2 small games and gave up. YMMV. I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone made it work and what their approach was. I'm not sure how well it would work for a monster game but if it's your only option....
If you have zero experience, I'd suggest this instead:
Battle for Moscow, you can get a free print and play version here
https://grognard.com/bfm/game.html
or a nice printed version pretty cheap here
https://www.victorypointgames.com/battle-for-moscow.html
If you like that, pretty much all the concepts in that game are also used in The Mighty Endeavor, but you have a lot fewer units to deal with at first.
Another option is a old game Onslaught: D-day to the Rhine, which covers the same ground as The Mighty Endeavor
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002Y89YL2/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all
The one advantage of The Mighty Endeavor is that it's part of a series, if you like it there are about a dozen games that have very similar rules, but if you are starting at ground zero and dont know what a ZOC is Battle for Moscow is a better start.

A review from 2016 (not me):
I'm a hex-and-counter wargamer, heavily in to Advanced Squad Leader. The Darice 1157 trays provide the absolute best storage solution for the thousands of counters that span the many ASL modules. I used 13 of these trays for the counters that come with Beyond Valor. That's 14 counter sheets, about 2000 counters. I've got them sorted with very little mixing of counter types. The 32 compartments are just the right number and just the right size. By the time I have all of the counters sorted for all of the ASL modules, I'll happily own over 150 of these trays.
I've replaced an AH ASL pile with an MMP pile - the old Planos and tackle boxes are now for minis.
Some people use foam mounting tape. It's like two-sided tape. Half-inch counters fit perfectly. Here's a link
This is the one I have. Expensive but super heavy duty and makes consistent clean cuts

I clipped all my ASL counters(12,000+) with finger nail clippers and a jig I made from a CD case. I bought one of these back when he was selling them for 5 dollars, it works well also. Last year I bought this corner clipper it works ok, but you have to be careful when using it or you can mangle the counters. Clipped counters just look better on the maps/boards to me. It also makes the counter much more uniform for stacking purposes.
Looks like the same one I have (although there are 3 different radii styles). I have the 2.5mm which I use for everything - works great. If you're real picky you'll want all 3 depending on the counter size.

I use an Oregon Lamination Corner Rounder, 2mm size. Absolutely worth the price if you want to have perfectly rounded corners on your counters. Once you get the hang of it, it's quick and consistent.
Here is the same model I purchased on Amazon
User error. You have to make sure the counter is properly aligned against the stops. Which model cutter did you get, the completely handheld one, or the one that sits on the table and you push down the top handle?
I use this one because you can hold it upside-down and clearly see how well the counter is aligned before you punch.

This one is worth the little bit extra. QC has slipped recently, but they will ship replacements.
