Aside from the obvious (gear), some great gifts/accessories under $50 are....

Antibacterial spray. Spray this stuff on after every use while the gear dries. Helps reduce the stink. Everyone should use this stuff.

For those of us that sweat, these liners are a godsend. I played once without one the other week by mistake and sweat would not stay out of my eyes. These are a must.

Superfeet carbon or hockey comfort. I was skeptical at first, but they really are great. Worth the price of admission

I enjoy stick wax. Helps keep my blade a little cleaner, tape lasts a little longer, and I get a nice smell.

Too much volume in the toes of your skates? Bauer clearly realized this as their latest lineup has an anatomical toecap which effectively does exactly what these do.

It’s a personal preference, but I switched to Tacki Mac over a year ago in place of traditional hockey tape. It really does extend the life of your gloves and lasts a lot longer.

Jills: just go get on and wear it even if you're not ready for the sock set up yet. The jill part does feel a little weird but I wear one less because of a puck to the groin but for "cup checks" or "sawing the nuts". Not all players are "awesome" and will put their stick in your crotch and some players think a board battle is the right time to punch you in the cup. It's not a common issue but it's one you mise well protect against.

I'll link the jill I use as the Bauer one that came with my pants wasn't up to par IMO. If I'm going to wear one I want one that I actually think will protect from pucks, sticks, and punching. Just take off the harness part and put it in the cup part your pants/shorts come with. The silicon that goes around it makes it pretty comfy. It can get out of order just like anyone's cup can but once I'm on the ice I don't notice it.

Hello! I am a girl so I am normally a size 7/8 shoe and I am a size 3 skate. The toe box has a bit of space but I plan on using powerfoot. (https://www.amazon.com/Powerfoot-Hockey-Skate-Performance-Insert/dp/B01A9EMLR6) to cover the bit of extra space. Definitely swing by your shop and get fitted. My toes brush the end lightly and it feels perfect on the ice!

u/Buddhas_Keeper · 3 pointsr/hockeyplayers

Welcome back! I recently got a pair of Powerfoot Hockey Skate inserts https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TFY490E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sNjjybR42A2BK for my new Bauer skates and LOVE them. They fill the negative space above your toes and I noticed a difference the first time I skated with them. Granted, I am not a great skater but it definitely helped with the fit of my skate and stability.

u/hockeygains · 8 pointsr/hockeyplayers

I use Sex Wax, but get the cold water surf wax like the 2X here. It's softer and stickier than usual hockey wax.

Plus it smells fantastic.

Skate Fenders are really nice to have and not part of the default gear load-out.

An accessory bag (something like this) is really useful for keeping small loose stuff like tape, wax, honing stone, extra laces, etc contained instead of rattling around in your bag.

A Boot Dryer is great for after the game keeping your skates and gloves from getting nasty and helping them last longer.

Air Freshner/odor absorber for the bag. Especially if you dont air your gear out. Even something as small and simple as these can help a lot.

A multi-tool. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. Just something to tighten up loose screws with, cut tape or torn bits of gear, and maybe occasionally open a bottle with.

u/puckOmancer · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

Sorry, I just need to confirm that's the side of your big toe? If it is, is the bump soft or is it firm? If it's firm, you might be developing a bunion of some sort, but regardless, it's probably because of rubbing against the side of your skate. If you feel inside your skate, where the toe cap meets the rest of the boot, there will probably a noticeable ridge or noticeable stitches or rough spot. That's probably what your foot is rubbing against. It's probably only on one foot because one foot is always larger than the other, so stuff like this often only happens to one foot. It's either been happening slowly, and you haven't noticed, or as the skate ages, the foams inside will compress, making the skate more roomy, so now there's room for your foot to move around enough to do that.

If that is indeed the problem, its an easy fix. Just add some padding to the skate. The bump may or may not go away. I've used heel blister pads to pad rough spots like that in my skates. Just cut to size and use the self adhesive to stick to the skate. You can also just put some padding over your foot instead.

Hope this helps

You know what else has Lanolin that works well on hockey gloves? Some women's shaving creams like Skintimate in the pink can: https://www.amazon.com/Skintimate-Therapy-Moisturizing-Lanolin-Butter/dp/B0032ANCYG?th=1

I'm think the pure lanolin cream may be better, but I've tried the women's shaving cream on gloves and it does condition them well.

u/burnie08 · 3 pointsr/hockeyplayers

Got these off Amazon. They aren’t perfect by any means but I think they help.

XCEL Foam Rubber Padding - 16-Piece Acoustic Damper Anti-Vibration Closed-Cell Pads w/ Adhesive, 3"x3"x1/4" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07483R2GF?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

If it's on the lower butt (right where your butt touches the chair when sitting), getting better pants is not going to really help since that area isn't usually padded.

If you're looking for the heftiest protection, I'd go with the Tackla 9000 pant or Reebok 9k girdle.

I have a tendency to fall right on my sit bones where hockey pants aren't padded well, so I wear butt pads under my pants. [link] I bought them "used - like new" so >50% off.

u/Chester555 · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

I'm intrigued! Do they come in something other than Nashville colors? ;)

Edit: wow you were serious, they're actually called that.

You could try these and see if they help. Worth a try before jumping straight to new skates.

u/EastWhiskey · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

Sounds like a pressure point issue. Baking or punching the skates is probably the best option. Might also try a couple different kinds of socks. I haven't tried these before, but I've heard good reviews online, Bunga pads. They're supposed to reduce pressure points. There's a bunch of different styles available on Amazon.

u/liquinas · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

Don't know what the deal is with everyone saying it has to stink. It's all about timing. You have a few hours after a game to hang the stuff to dry before the stank sets in.

I usually just hang everything from a tree in the backyard when I get home from a game, spray this shit on it and call it a day. Just avoid leaving it in the sun for more than one day straight so you don't get sun damage. Never leave helmets (warrior krowns will fall apart). gloves (will crack), or top-tier skates (can heat mold) in direct sunlight.

The gloves I usually put inside on a windowsill or in front of a fan for an hour.

If you don't have an outdoor area just get a cheap fan and air it out. As long as you don't let it sit without airflow it won't stink.

I play 3 times a week and never had a problem with smell. When the gloves start to smell (about 2 months), toss the shit in the washer with some oxyclean and done.

There's potential for a system of metrics in this book Complete Conditioning for Hockey. In chapter 2, Tests for Hockey Fitness, I believe they have some on ice tests that can be recorded, the data could be tracked for progress, and used toward developing individualized goals.

u/letsgotocanada · 6 pointsr/hockeyplayers

This book explains a lot about the differences between distance running (aerobic fitness) and its benefits (V02 max IIRC) and anaerobic fitness (doing wind sprints for the amount of time you'll be on the ice). Running is good for overall endurance, but you'll also want to factor in sprints as that is what hockey is all about.

u/Tossmeoutatwork · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

I got a pair of these (https://www.amazon.com/Absolute-Bunga-Pads-Ankle-Sleeve/dp/B000289XWQ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=bunga+pad&qid=1556205967&s=gateway&sr=8-3) when I retired my first pair of skates because the stiffer boot was putting more pressure on my ankle from the top of the boot. It's just a bit of gel padding and stays in place pretty well

u/sparkycircuit01 · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

I wear this pelvic protector and have found it really comfortable. I wear compression shorts, and then just slip that over them under my hockey pants. I don't have the shorts with the velcro and to be honest have yet to have problems with my socks falling down (knock on wood). I just tape them over my shin pads.

u/lukemese · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

I've heard good things about these pads, though I haven't tried them myself. Maybe give them a shot?

u/TwoBallsagna · 2 pointsr/hockeyplayers

Good point. My current skates need toe caps as they were too tall in the toe. These have a world of difference.
https://www.amazon.com/Powerfoot-Hockey-Skate-Performance-Insert/dp/B01A9EMLR6

u/clipper377 · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

I've been playing in these for a while:

https://smile.amazon.com/Skate-Fender-Pro/dp/B005RSHOPY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500576116&sr=8-1&keywords=skate+fenders

Doesn't really change my skating style, and it's an extra something between the puck and your skate. I've taken two pucks off of them (but to be fair, no serious clap bombs) and it does seem to make a difference. Seemed to spread out the impact and deaden the impact some. Wish the velcro straps were a little neater, they seem kinda cheap.

70 bucks and some ribbing in the locker room or an ER visit and a few weeks off. No brainer for me.

u/breakingbeauty · 3 pointsr/hockeyplayers

for me it did after i changed my lacing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D671VgevDcg&t=131s

you can immediately feel the difference. while i was recovering, i used a gel pad:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073BZJQXJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

but after recovering after a few weeks- i don't need the pad anymore.

also i skip an eyelet near the top of my lacing

u/stoplight · 1 pointr/hockeyplayers

For a cheap gear bag I recommend this. It's a simple 16" x 40" duffle bag. I got this one and it fits all my gear.

If you have a garage, the simplest way is a couple of these bike hooks, of course I only used them for like 2-3 sticks at a time, but I imagine there'd be larger hooks you could use.

Check these out. I was having the same problem. Bought this and it's helped significantly. The package only comes with 1 but you can very easily cut it in half and it still provides plenty of coverage where you need it.
