I have both the valor bd-7 power rack+dip handles as well as the FG pro utility bench. They're solid, budget pieces of equipment, offer good bang for your buck, and get the job done. Both the rack and bench are more lightweight than other options out there, but as long as you won't outgrow their weight capacities, they should be fine (I think 500 lbs for the rack and 600 lbs, weight and user combined, for the bench). Keep in mind, the lat pulldown gets in the way of incline benching inside the rack. If that's going to be a problem, you can elect to get just a rack without a lat pulldown and attach something like this for pulley work. There are definitely more luxurious options out there in terms of racks, like ones from Rogue (and they have the option of a bunch of cool attachments) but it all depends on your budget and goals. There are some flaws to the rack, like the storage pegs getting in the way of benching inside the rack when loaded with plates (I ended up removing the top pegs and am thinking about moving the pegs to the front by switching the front and back posts so I can actually store plates on the pegs). Overall, the rack gets the job done for me and I like having the option to do pulley work. Here's a thread on the bench that helped me decide on buying it. Definitely happy about it, especially at the price I got it for. Dick's always has 10% off when you sign-up for emails here. At the time, I was able to stack the 10% with a 20% off coupon to get the bench for $140.77 after tax and free in-store pick up.

I got a package that included the triceps rope and single handle here for $21 that are working fine if you want to save some money on attachments.

If you're interested in doing olympic lifts farther down the road, this barbell is generally considered the best bang for your buck barbell and comparable to more expensive options out there. It all depends on your needs, the Dick's set might work just fine.

Let me know if you have any questions.

u/MadDuck- · 2 pointsr/homegym

That bar is pretty junky, but you're basically getting it for free with the weights. It'll get you started and you can upgrade that later if you get serious about it. It'll also give you a beater/landmine/superset bar in the future if you upgrade.

Chances are, if you got the $95 one you would probably end up wanting to upgrade it anyways.

this one is is a decent starter bar (they have one for $120 as a warehouse deal, which is how I bought mine). It has decent, but not great bushings and ribbed sleeves so the plates and clamps stay on better. The sleeves are also held on by a circlip instead of pinned like the cheaper ones. The bar isn't nearly as strong as some of the better and newer bars, but it's still pretty good and a lot better than those cheaper ones. The knurling isn't that aggressive, but it's much better than most cheap bars. It also has a black oxide finish on the bar.

Black oxide is one of my favorite finishes. Unlike Zink plated, chrome, or ceratoke the black oxide doesn't take away from the sharpness of the knurling. They dunk the bar in a bath of nitrates ect. and it creates a very thin (I believe only a few millionths of an inch) oxidized layer that does an ok job of warding off rust. It can still rust and it's not as durable as other finishes, but it'll feel very much like a bare steel, or stainless steel bar, which imo are the best feeling.

You should also check out titan fitness and maybe rep fitness. They might have comparable bars.

Alright well I've looked up some stuff, your going to want a power cage with olympic weights and a bench at the bare minimum.

Some stuff I've found about $950 before shippping:
cage 390: https://www.titan.fitness/cages-and-racks/t-3-racks/titan-t-3-series-short-power-rack-36-deep.html
Titan cages aren't as nice as rogue, but they are still very nice cages that has a wide variety of attachments you can have. Since your on a somewhat limited budget and this will save you $400

weights/bar 190: https://www.walmart.com/ip/CAP-Barbell-300-lb-Olympic-Set-Includes-7-Bar/27137654?u1=V1c5ZTFRb0tNcXdBQVNnclhqWUFBQUND&oid=368707.1&wmlspartner=NKa3hZyYoHA&sourceid=32308939332914019695&affillinktype=10&veh=aff
This is a very cheap set, but this will get you some starter weights and a starter bar. Since your a complete beginner, this bar should be fine for a while. Most bars will bend before they break so you'll know when you need to replace it, but probably around a 315 squat or deadlift.

bench incline/decline 300: https://www.amazon.com/Rep-Adjustable-Bench-Capacity-Incline/dp/B00YNS7D9G/ref=sr_1_17?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1500496016&sr=1-17&keywords=adjustable+bench
I don't know a lot about this bench, but I like it because it has a high weight capacity and it is incline and decline. This will give you a much wider range of stuff to do vs a flat or just an incline bench.

landmine attachemnt for cage 30: https://www.titan.fitness/landmine-rack-attachment.html
A landmine is super nice for rows and I even use it for shoulders

adjustable dumbbells 41: https://www.amazon.com/Barbell-Solid-20-Inch-Dumbbell-Handle/dp/B0010YOBB4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500496213&sr=8-1&keywords=adjustable+olympic+dumbbells
Adjustable dumbbells, more inconvenient than individual weights or the quick change sets, but this gives you a lot of flexibility for very cheap and you can re use the weights you already have.

EDIT:

Since I'm still about 800 short I'l throw some more suggestions:

Maybe upgrade the bar - this way you don't need to worry about it bending on you or you growing out of it while your in college. The rogue bars are suggested a lot on here because they are good quality for their price. They should hold up for a very very long time and be a nice bar. When looking for a bar, the only thing you really need to look at is weight capacity and the knurling (groves in the bar for grip). You probably want center knurling for your squats. There are other factors with bars like the amount of whip, how much the collars spin and such but you'll pretty much want a good quality general purpose bar.
$275
http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-ohio-power-bar

Lat pulldown / cable row machine $200
https://www.amazon.com/Akonza-Machine-Fitness-Attachment-Pulldown/dp/B01FYLE7OY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500497021&sr=8-1&keywords=cable+pulldown+machine
I know nothing about this particular machine, but it looks like it has decent reviews. This will allow you to do rows and pull downs.

You may want to build a platform for your cage, you'll want to do this with plywood and horsestall mats so that you can do deadlifts without breaking your floor. This will probably run you 300, probably less, but lets go with 300.

u/sixout · 1 pointr/homegym

I started with about the same budget as you. This is what I did (minus the flooring because I'm in the garage and just threw down mats).

http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rubber-mat-black-4-ft-x-6-ft?cm_vc=-10005 6 horse stall mats - 35 bucks a piece. $220

http://www.titan.fitness/short-power-rack.html - Titan short rack, because of the clearance thing. I wish I would have gotten the taller one so I could OHP in it, but it's not a big deal. $269

http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/body-power-deluxe-multifunctional-power-tower?repChildCatid=3077414 Power tower, on sale still. $129

http://www.ironmaster.com/products/quick-lock-dumbbell-system-75 - Ironmaster dumbbells - best purchase ever. $499

Found 205lbs of rogue bumper plates, and a flat bench on craiglist for $300 Had another 175lbs of bumper plates previously. If you don't want bumper plates you can find metal plates for much cheaper on craigslist.

That had me at about $1600 after taxes. I also got a Xebex rower/decline bench/med ball from GetRXd on a special for $800 but that was bought because it was a great deal. Awesome rower btw.

If you want a good incline bench instead of flat, go with the ironmaster one. It's $299 I believe and very solid. Ironmaster dumbbells are way, way better than the Bowflex ones. They're solid metal. I toss them around and they're fine. They also don't rattle.

I also got the Cap bar from amazon for $160. Awesome 1000lb rated bar. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006R4EOXM/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687562&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001K4OPY2&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=044DMW43KCXP3YXFA73M

u/sin-eater82 · 9 pointsr/homegym

I have the rep fitness flat bench and really like it. I got it for about $100 during black friday, but it's $129 on Amazon. And it qualifies for prime shipping if you have it.

https://www.amazon.com/Rep-Rated-Weight-Bench-Lifting/dp/B00NLPZGU0

Rep has it on their site for $100, but you'll have to pay shipping. https://www.repfitness.com/rep-flat-bench

I'm not sure which would come out cheaper, but that $100 amazon giftcard would only work for amazon obviously. I can't imagine that the difference would be much once you add shipping to ordering it from their site.

It'd be nice if the rep fitness bench had wheels like the titan bench does, but mainly for my fiancee. Having to pick it up to move it is not an issue. And I prefer the 12" wide pad to the 10" wide pad of the titan bench.

I think the titan bench would be fine as long as you're good with the 10" width. If you care about such things, the dimensions for an IPF approved bench are 48L x 12W x 17H. The rep is 47L x 12W x 17.5H. The titan is 47.25L x 10W x 16.25H.

So they're pretty close in dimensions. The padding on the rep bench is pretty good. I can't speak for the titan bench.

I can't agree more with your gym sentiments. Walking through a sea of resting bitch faces at the gym just to see that two people were already waiting for the squat rack tended to ruin my somewhat fragile motivation.

I would recommend against the FT2, having an enforced straight up and down bar path will not help your form and will make your workout less effective for your core/stabilizing muscles. If you're thinking you want something safe for home workouts alone, you can still do that with a free weight barbell setup, spotter arms are wonderful thing.

I haven't tried that many options, but I can tell you what is working for me. I got the titan T3 squat rack and I love it. I highly recommend the spotter arms, I try for bench personal records all the time by myself and I've never had issues when I failed. This rack is stable enough for pull ups but you don't have to screw it to the floor to install. I did have to take off both the weight storage arms so that the plates on the storage arms didn't impede my bench press. http://www.titan.fitness/cages-and-racks/squat-rack.html

For the barbell I got the CAP OB-86B, it's reasonably priced and I'm not doing anything too fancy with the olympic lifts. I expect to get another, better bar and keep it as a beater bar eventually. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2

My plates are a mix, I recommend getting some bumper plates off craigslist or a local shop to get started then adding bumper and iron plates as needed. Another option is to get the $300 iron set from Dick's as a starting set, but from what I've heard the bar is fit only to trash/resell. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/fitness-gear-300-lb-olympic-weight-set-16fgeu300lbstwth7brb/16fgeu300lbstwth7brb

For bench I'd recommend getting something strong and adjustable. I got the flat Adidas bench and it's fine, though I now want an adjustable bench so I can do incline/decline. https://www.amazon.com/adidas-Performance-Flat-Training-Bench/dp/B00WHIG6X8

Appropriate flooring, resistence bands, and dumbbells are also incredibly helpful.

Here's the details on the stuff:

Power Rack. Had this about 6 weeks and I'm extremely happy with it. Looks fine, feels very sturdy, no feeling of tipping or instability even when I hang from the bar at front. Paint scratches when you move and insert the spotter bars but what do you want for $350 shipped. It's held 215 on multiple occasions with no issues. If you lift significantly heavier than this (300+) you may want to read reviews first, or invest in a less-starter rack, but for many/most people this will be fine forever. It's dead easy to assemble if you have a socket set and if you don't, great opportunity to get one, they're cheap! Assembly can be done mostly solo but the final bits really need a second person to hold stuff in place while bolts are inserted. Rack comes shipped in 2 or 3 (can't remember) boxes which are pretty unwieldy and heavy.

I went with this CAP barbell. This suits my needs very well with great knurling and came without bend, and I'm unlikely to put a bend in it with my sub-300 deadlifts. The barbell ships in a fun 7 foot cylindrical tube which caused the dude at the mail place to nearly topple over because he expected it to be light for some reason.

I also got this plate tree which holds 2x 45# bumpers, 2x 45# plates, and 2x 25#, 2x 10#, 4x 5#, and 2x 2.5#. Does the trick but paint scratches off the pegs like crazy but is easily cleaned up. Single box, about 30 pounds.

The bench is this one by Marcy. I wanted a simple bench and that's what I got. Great bench for the price and I haven't had any instability problems. Had this for a year and used up to 70# dumbbells and 215# barbell with it (I'm 215). Most weight total that's been on it was a 270# friend benching 185# for sets and he found it fine.

Assorted stuff: got these puzzle mats which do the trick for the right price and are stowable unlike a permanent mat. As I mentioned elsewhere the 45# bumpers are meant to mitigate any floor impact, and I'm not terribly concerned with keeping this floor perfect anyway (it's 10 year old laminate on top of concrete, and the "path" is linoleum). The plates were from a sale at the local FitnessDerp store (not its real name) and were 85 cents a pound -- I never saw any on Craigslist for less than that in the month I looked. Finally just some collars.

The cat in the picture highly recommends this crinkle tunnel.

u/Eat-Sleep-Lift · 4 pointsr/homegym

You don't expect to lift more than 250lbs? You wholly underestimate your strength. You should be able to pull more than that on a deadlift before you max out on SL 5x5.

IF you really want to stick with lifting and not just a program but being dedicated to lifting regularly, then buy quality. Being thrifty doesn't mean buying cheap. It means getting the most out of what you spend, and good quality stuff will last you a lifetime.

Titan racks are great value, If you can't bolt the T-3 to the floor or a platform, look into getting the free standing T-3 Squat Stand with spotter arms. The T-2 cage isn't as heavy duty but still more than enough for most people.

There are other options but Titan's a good value.

As far as bars, get the CAP-OB86 which is a highly regarded barbell for it's price whihc regularly goes on sale for as low as 100 dollars.

As far as plates go, buy used if your local area has a good craigslist base. Get mostly 45s with a pair of 25s and 10s

Buy the Adidas flat bench which is a cheap but sturdy option to the more beefier $150+ dollar options

u/theking4u · 3 pointsr/homegym

All this advice applies if you live in the US (don't wanna waste your time).

For a full power rack, I would recommend just waiting for a good deal on craigslist. Even this rack on amazon is pretty good deal

I'm sure if you look long enough you can find a better deal on craigslist. I bought that weight bench a few years ago, but if I had known better I would have just gotten a power rack. As a beginner (less than 300lbs on squat), this solution works for me. Also, try to find one with a pulley system if possible, cause I love some of the exercises that are only possible with a pulley system, especially if you are beginner. Also, remember if you decide to upgrade you can always sell something professionally made and get most of your money back and even make money if bought from a really good deal. Of course, void all this if you love building stuff and have the time.

u/druunavt · 2 pointsr/homegym

I got the Titan HD rack and love it. I won an auction on eBay for it for $326; they run one at a time, it seems, so you might want to see if you can save some dough that way. Some are listed w/dip bars included.

What about the adidas flat bench? Solid weight limit, gets great reviews for sturdiness. You can get an adjustable later; do you even need it for 5x5?

I also just snagged a CAP OB-86B barbell and man, that thing is nice. I would definitely spend the $142 on it.

I have gotten all my Oly weight plates on craigslist for cheap so you might find that works for you to save some money.

Have fun!

u/easye7 · 1 pointr/homegym

I'm 6'1" but with a 7" basement ceiling, I don't see pullups happening unless I'm gonna stick my head between the joists each time lol. Same with OHP unfortunately.

I'm looking at normal height racks now, I assumed that with only 2-3" of clearance I would have trouble assembling the rack, but it sounds like that isn't the case. The Powerline PR200X is the current frontrunner.

I don't have a fear of falling backwards or anything, I've been lifting for quite some time and I know my limitations. It looks like I could certainly get a squat stand for much less than a full cage, but I still have concerns about stability. However, I am fairly certain I can just bolt a stand into my basement slab, which would cure stability issues I would think. Also, a cage would allow for some attachments, like dip bars, which would I would definitely want. I'm wondering if I can actually get a good squat stand with safety arms for less than 400 shipped, which is what I'm looking at for the Powerline.

Copied from a previous post I did

Ask and you shall receive (keep in mind this isn't anything special). Most of the information I used to build it was from the following post/user: https://www.reddit.com/r/homegym/comments/59phrd/anyone_rig_up_a_pulley_attachment_to_their_titan/d9ctoqe/?st=j2v2cxxe&sh=42f06b7e

Another thing to keep in mind is that I went the route of using swaged sleeves instead of wire rope clamps because I hold the belief that they are safer for working with moving loads and I would very much not like to die– if you have no idea what I mean you can read more in the post above. Also please keep in mind that the weight limit will be limited by your weakest item (so if you buy 6 things rated for 800lbs but cheap out on a carabiner with a limit of 200lbs – you’re limit is 200lb or less, probably less)

An unintended beauty I found with building a home gym is that because of budget restraints for most of us, you're often forced to boil down your routine into the basics early on. To me that's a wonderful thing. I've been a far more productive lifter focusing on more basic lifts and forgetting about all the ancillary isolation exercises. Granted, your lifting routine doesn't seem to get cute with the iso work. So I guess my point is, get what you need for the big lifts now. You can figure out alternatives to your complimentary lifts with what you have. For example, using different pull up grips, or using inexpensive bands as support in your pullups if you need to go high reps (in place of lat pulldowns) are possibilities.

In time, you'll get pieces here and there to add further variety. Many of these gyms you see here have evolved over time. Be patient, you'll be accumulating complimentary pieces in no time.

My advice is to put money in:

  • a decent rack that has a lot of supporting accessories (Titan is a good brand for this)

  • a sturdy bench (I like my Rep Fitness adjustable bench)

  • some horse stall mats - I personally think a platform may not be necessary unless you're doing olympic lifts, and dropping from up high. I've deadlifted 500+ on 3/4" horse stall mats alone, with no damage to the concrete beneath.

  • Dick's runs great deals for 300 lbs olympic weight sets (I've seen as low as $179). The bars that come with this are crap, but could last you 6 months if you're not going to heavy or beating on it until you get a good bar. Some people have been able to flip the bar immediately for money on Letgo or Craigslist.

  • Solid barbell... look for deals, I got this one for $80 after some weird instant rebate on Amazon last July. It was posted in this forum. There's plenty of good barbells out there, just a little research should land you a decent one.
  • Landmine - Best bang for the buck in my gym. I got one like this for ~$23 around the holidays. You can add a ton of variety to your workout. Just google 'landmine exercises'. You can put that cheap bar that came with the Dicks' set in there.
u/MagesticSSS · 1 pointr/homegym

Wow, thanks, this bar looks awesome! I'd just gone with the one recommended in the FAQ, but this is even better!

What do you think of this bench? It costs $150 + $15ish for tax/shipping/etc. Though it says it's rated for 300lbs on Amazon, the company site says 600, and it's been tested for up to 1000. Also, it has plenty of reviews so I'm pretty confident about it. Just wanted to see if you got a better deal :)

u/HeroboT · 1 pointr/homegym

I would suggest building a platform for deadlifts - my top sets right now are around 330, I don't drop the weight and use bumpers and I don't feel like the stall mats are gonna be enough for too long.

I don't see a weight limit on that bench, but most of the Marcy ones I have seen are pretty low, like 300-500 lbs. If you're gonna be deadlifting 500 I assume you're gonna be benching at least half that, added to your bodyweight will probably exceed the weight limit, especially under a dynamic load.

Instead of the bench and rack you have chosen, I'd spend a little more and get something like this rack and maybe the Titan fitness flat bench, which has a 1000lb limit.

And the link for the Olympic bar you posted doesn't work.

Edit: that fitness reality cage has an option with a bench too, that might be a good way to go too because it's adjustable and I think it has a pretty high limit.

u/Rhynegains · 4 pointsr/homegym

So, why all the dumbbells?

The price depends on the stuff you want. There's plenty of cheaper options. I spent around $650 to start and did fine. My current set up now may be $3000.

Here's the beginner sets I usually recommend:

  • Dicks Sporting Goods 300lb Weight Set which is currently at $199. It also includes a bar. I do not recommend dropping these for Deadlifts, though. Decent price for weights, but the bar isn't great. May want to pick up a Rogue bar but isn't necessary. I love the Chan Bar.

  • Fitness Reality Full Cage which is currently for $234. I have this cage and love it. Only thing I dont like are the chrome attachments. They run off on the knurl.

  • Fitness Gear Bench which is currently about $90. That is a budget bench, so if you want to spring for something better, that's a good idea. I have this bench and it works fine, I just have to tighten the bolts every couple months.

That'll probably run you about $650 after taxes. Other supplies:

    Additional items:

  • Weight Storage Tree which should hold everything from your set.
  • Bar Weight Locks currently $9.
  • Floor Protection which are for walking around, not weights to land on. Make a platform for your cage.
  • Pull Up Bands
  • Back Extension/Sit up Bench
  • Platform: 5 pieces of plywood (1 of those can be "pretty" to be stained and coated), 1 4x8 horse stall mat, 1-1/4 in wood screws, wood glue, stain of choice, polyurethane, brushes.

    For the other questions:

Mine is set up in a spare bedroom. I love it. I dont have to deal with temp swings. Just protect your floor and make a platform.

I am a big fan of the Ohio Power bar, and I went ahead and picked up one from the USA. you're right, its $$$$ but IMO worth the money.

if you are looking for a cheaper "Canadian" alternative you could try this bar http://www.strongarmsport.com/product-p/bar-bos.htm it's from Bells of Steel and has great reviews. This is their last gen bar, but reviews are saying its better than their "new and improved" version. its comes in at $370 shipping and taxes inc. the Rogue bar comes in at $390 shipped so its a no brainer to go with the OPB.

the only other option I found to be cheaper was the Cap Power Bar from Amazon (Free ship with Prime) https://www.amazon.ca/Cap-Barbell-Weight-Lifting-Olympic/dp/B006R4EOXM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520517760&sr=8-1&keywords=ob86pbck

currently at $193 ($218 taxes in and free ship) is your cheapest option for a decently reviewed power bar. http://capbarbell.com/1500lb-solid-power-squat-bar-with-central-knurling/

Posted this for someone else last week for the pulley I made.

As i mentioned before i stole the spud system idea and used soft loop straps http://i.imgur.com/ieEZAYW.jpg

Add quick link from http://www.homedepot.com/p/National-Hardware-1-4-in-Zinc-Plated-Quick-Link-3150BC-1-4-QUICK-LINK-ZN/204606888?MERCH=REC-_-rv_gm_pip_rr-_-100192336-_-204606888-_-N this specific one is rated at 800 pounds

Next is a pulley i got the 3in swivel pulley https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-National-Hardware-3211BC-Plated/dp/B000BD6BSQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1497150073&sr=1-1&keywords=3in+swivel+pulley

Combine it for something like this: Strap + Quicklink + Pulley http://i.imgur.com/Tq2qTsf.jpg

Next for the cable i went to home depot and got 62 inches of "1/8 in. Galvanized UNCOATED Wire Rope" obviously if you want a more piece of mind you can get thicker Ropes for a bigger work load but you can go to your local homedepot to check what they have and can cut as much as you want. It only cost me $2 for 60 inches. Just make sure you know your measurements as i gave the loop an extra 6 inches each side.

Then you are going to want 2 sets of crimps and thimbles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K881w8xqNKE There are cheaper options but i wanted it right away. You can always order them online just make sure the measurements fit your Wire Rope. As for the tool i dont have a Crimper or Swager so i used the one at homedepot. If you're not very handy with tools you can use Wire Clamps but these are not as safe and i wouldnt recommend using a lot of weight with them.

Get two Carabiner anywhere online or homedepot make sure the weight rating is good enough for what you want to do and that it will fit through the loops you make http://i.imgur.com/HTGVdFh.jpg

Combine it http://i.imgur.com/XuK8t6I.jpg

*Note that you will have to have the cable threaded through the pulley before you clamp both sides of the cable.

Final piece the Loading Pin. You can either buy this http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-loading-pin?prod_id=3800&gclid=CNb7wKTqtNQCFduEswodhi8PnQ

OR buy a 3/4in x 18in Black Steel Pipe and 3/4 in Floor Flange combine it http://30thandweldon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2620.jpg and drill a hole at the top on both sides to hook an Eye Bolt. Its not as professional but will cost less then the rep fitness one.

u/reyomnwahs · 5 pointsr/homegym

I have a Valor BD-7, which is nothing special, but there's two things I like about it that might be worth considering for power racks.

  1. The majority of the random rack accessories out there seem to be 2x2, so for example I've added extra spotter bars, another set of long spotter arms so I can bench outside the rack, and some better J-hooks than the ones it came with.

Sure, accessories exist for 2x2.5 or 2x3, but 2x2 with 1" holes gives you a lot more stuff to choose from in my experience.

  2. I like having an upper / lower cable pull, personally. A lot of people end up fabricating or buying one of the Spud sets but having it built-in is nice.

Bench wise, it may not matter to you, but if you're already getting something with a leg hold-down, you might as well look for one that has a modular leg extension and a preacher bench that you can swap in and out.
u/dweezil22 · 5 pointsr/homegym

At that weight basically anything you get will be ok, that said, safeties are still nice to have, so consider the value of a full rack or a half rack instead of just a squat stand. As always, Craigslist or your local alternative can be a lot better deals (and your realism about weights may mean that some of the less popular cheaper stuff will be great for you while everyone else is chasing expensive Rogue gear).

If you do want to go new, Slickdeals just pointed me towards this $250 prime shipping rack on Amazon that looks like one of the cheapest options at the moment: https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-810XLT-800lbs-Capacity/dp/B01N4I8FOY/ CamelCamelCamel is amazingly reporting it sold for < $150 a few times this year (though I dunno if that included shipping)

u/elementwrx · 1 pointr/homegym

Not sure what you plan on doing and how much weight you'll be using, but I'm finishing up assembling my frugal low-space garage gym. I got a few new items because they were not too expensive and hard to find on Craigslist (squat stands and bumper plates namely).

  • Beater barbell off Craigslist ($45)
  • Squat Stands new off Amazon ($70) - if you're doing a lot more weight and/or space isn't an issue, I'd recommend something like this or this
  • Bench off Craigslist ($50)
  • 180lbs Diamond Pro Bumper Plates from Walmart 160lb set + 2x10 set ($227) - with free shipping, it's easy to add on in the future
  • 4x5lb + 2x2.5lb steel plates off Craigslist ($20)

Total Cost: $412 (or 3.2 months of my CrossFit membership)

It's not the most awesome home gym, but fits in the corner of my garage, and is heavy enough for me to do my Starting Strength routine and progress a bit before I need to add on.
u/fitzgerh · 3 pointsr/homegym

I have the SuperBench. It is great. It is a little pricey, but I love the space-saving attachments that you can buy for it. I have the situp, dip and GHD extension.

I have the PowerLine PPR200X Power Rack, which may be better suited to your needs. I know you said that space is a concern, but you get a lot out of this piece of equipment. It comes with a pullup bar and the safety bars adjust easily for squats and bench-related activities. The weight limit is a bit low, but that won't be a problem for a while (in my case, at least). I built a rack plate holder last weekend and now my weights hang conveniently from the back of the rack.

u/kmolch · 5 pointsr/homegym

Couldn't agree more regarding the purchase of a rack that includes plate storage. Its more space efficient and leaves more open floor space. I have a fitness reality rack (https://www.amazon.com/FITNESS-REALITY-810XLT-800lbs-Capacity/dp/B01N4I8FOY/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1520431497&sr=1-1&keywords=fitness+reality+810xlt+super+max+power+cage) with T-2 plate holders, but if I were to buy again I'd think hard about getting a titan T-3 (T-3 over a T-2 because there seems to be more accessory options). However, from personal experience, I'd have to disagree regarding getting a flat bench and a "good" bar.
Regarding the bench, do you plan on doing incline bench/flys/curls/ rows/etc? The general sentiment of this community is buy once/buy forever. If that's the case, buy a good incline bench and call it a day. Otherwise, you buy the flat bench, then buy an adjustable bench down the road, and you're trying to store both of them in your 10x10 room. I got the el cheapo fitness reality (https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-Super-Adjustable-Weight/dp/B01CR4XFIK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520431386&sr=8-1&keywords=fitness+reality) one for ~$80. It does the job, but isn't super heavy/wide. While it doesn't feel rock solid, I've had people throw up 250#s on it no problem, so for many of us it should do the job. Looking back, I would look into Titan's adjustable bench, as well as the Ethos one from Dicks. The Ethos is a little steep at $250, but is super study and heavy duty feeling.
As far as getting a "good bar" goes, why rush it? What are your numbers currently? I got the Dick's Fitness Gear 300 # set (https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/fitness-gear-300-lbolympic-weight-set-16fgeu300lbstwth7brb/16fgeu300lbstwth7brb) for ~$180. It can be had for cheaper if you sign up for their promotion emails and use a $10 or $20 off coupon. I've pulled 300#s and squatted 300#s and the bar hasn't bent yet. Yes, the knurling could be better, and it won't last a lifetime, but until my lifts are consistently over 300#s or the bar does start to bend, buying a "good' bar can wait. It does the job and I could think of several things I'd rather buy first for my home gym. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait until I'm forced to buy a new bar and can get something badass, but if you're on a budget and the 300lb weight set bar works for what you need, I wouldn't rush into getting a better bar.

u/netlo · 3 pointsr/homegym

You should be fine then. I've been looking around at a setup for myself and this is what I'm seeing (just some choices, not necessarily the right ones).

If you're interested in a platform you can build your own:
https://www.reddit.com/r/homegym/comments/3xylb2/1_car_garage_home_gym_platform/
https://www.reddit.com/r/homegym/comments/5apsti/diy_lifting_platform_is_plywood_really_this/
https://www.reddit.com/r/homegym/comments/5frfij/if_you_could_do_one_thing_differently_with_your/

For a rack you might as well do a full cage, it is more safe. I used to own a squat rack with safety arms and it was fine. But a full cage allows you a bigger safety net.

Buget cage: http://www.titan.fitness/cages-and-racks/t-3-racks/titan-t-3-series-hd-power-rack-36-deep.html or something like a T-2 from Titan. The T-3 or X3 will be going on sale tomorrow (4/4/2017).

Midline cage: https://www.bellsofsteel.com/product/commercial-power-rack-light/

More expensive cage: http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-rml-490-power-rack

For the bar I think starting in the mid 200-300 range will be sufficient for a long time. http://www.roguefitness.com/the-ohio-bar and https://www.fringesport.com/collections/barbells/products/bomba-bar-v2-black-20kg-oly-bar seem to be good choices. http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-28-5-mm-boneyard-bars are slightly cheaper, slightly defective (scratch, paint, etc.) if you go with Rogue.

For a bench if you go flat you will find a lot of decent ones for $100-200. It seems all of the sites selling the flat benches around $115 are currently out of stock.

https://www.amazon.com/adidas-Performance-Flat-Training-Bench/dp/B00WHIG6X8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491262179&sr=8-1&keywords=adidas+bench in stock (600 lbs rated)

http://www.titan.fitness/strength-equipment/weightlifting-plates-and-bars/benches/flat-bench-1-000-lb-capacity.html (1,000 lbs rated) out of stock

http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-bt-bench in stock (1,000 lbs rated).

For plates you can buy used locally. There it seems $0.50/lb is good for steel plates, and around $1/lb for bumper plates. New you can try a local sports store for steel plates. For bumper plates you can get them from a lot of sources https://www.repfitness.com/bars-plates/olympic-plates/bumper-plates/rep-black-bumper-plates

http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-hg-2-0-bumper-plates

http://www.vulcanstrength.com/Vulcan-Alpha-Bumper-Plates-Set-p/alphbsets.htm (fancy).

u/OiledPelicanEgg · 4 pointsr/homegym

I got my attachments off of Amazon /u/_kc_mo_nster . Any 2x2 rack attachment should work. I got these padded j hooks They work well, but not a fan of the glue holding the pads on.

Also, got these Titan Fitness weight holders. Got 4 of those and use a set for dips as well. Works very well highly recommend if in need of plate storage

You can also try out Valor Fitness BD-7 attachment since those are all 2x2's too.

About 500lbs of random plates I got cheap. Most of it was bought used but in good condition. Took me a while because I was really patient so I’d find what I wanted.

I’m pretty happy with all of it. I was most concerned with saving space and getting stuff that had high enough weight capacities. I’m not lifting really heavy weights, so it’s all good for me but might not work for everyone.

I’m considering getting a stand or some matts, or maybe a few kettlebells.

u/Yobby · 2 pointsr/homegym

If you're not looking to purchase second hand, I would recommend this rack:

http://www.xtcfitness.ca/strength-equipment/power-racks-smith-machines/x-series-econ-power-rack-xsep-power-cage-weight-rack-squat-rack-crossfit-rack-xtc-gear.html

It's probably the cheapest rack with acceptable gauge steel among the crap being sold in Canada right now and the configuration of it being a Rogue clone is superb. $550+tax.

If you don't plan on doing olympic lifts, I would recommend the CAP OB-86B. Great beginner bar and probably the only one worth getting in the price range. Placed in high regards among many home-gymers. Otherwise, drop $300+ for a higher end bar that will last you a long time. This bar will be good up til 500lbs.

I have something like this tucked under one of the legs of my rack (not a T-2, but pretty similar) and it works fine. The Fitness Reality one has bolts over the top of the post to hold it down better if you want it more secure or don't want the knob sticking out. Mine doesn't move, though I sometimes catch bands or cables on the knob.

u/NotChristina · 1 pointr/homegym

Since I have my home gym in a second bedroom, I have issues with height and overall footprint (small room). I bought one of these earlier this year and have been quite happy with it. Natively takes 1” plates but bought adapters and it’s all good.

It’s definitely on the shorter side so I do a lot of exercises seated to get better ROM, but it’s been perfect for the limited amount of vertical (and horizontal) space I have.

u/Jamieson22 · 2 pointsr/homegym

I have this one, which looks very similar but without the spotter, etc:
https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-Commercial-Developer-Attachment/dp/B01N23F38A

While bench itself is good quality, it is > 21" high from floor to top of pad. Makes it hard to get feet down where I want them for bench (I am 5'11"). I bought a Titan Fitness flat bench recently as it is only 17" tall.

I use mine with the Fitness Reality 810XLT Power Cage that has been great:
https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-810XLT-Capacity-Weight/dp/B01NBOVAIJ

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/homegym

I picked up a 300lb oly set with a 7' bar for $150 on sale at Academy Sports about 6-8 weeks back. Normal price is $189 (well, site says $199 now). A decent bar will run you $100+ anyway and expect to spend nearly $0.80-1.00 per pound for individual plates, so this is an incredible steal of a deal. This is a starter set to be sure, but it's great for what it is. If you get it just make sure all the plates fit on the bar properly once you get it home. One of mine didn't and I had to take it back and have them swap it out -- there was a glob of metal in the hole that kept it from going on the bar.

To be honest, spend $200 on this set, then spend $300 (total shipped) on this power rack and you are golden for years. I just got that rack about 2 weeks ago and love the hell out of it.

u/playingwithdice · 2 pointsr/homegym

I don't have a homegym yet but I have my eye on this rack. From the few I've talked to on this thread who have it, it seems like a solid rack. I do like doing most of my workouts inside the rack so I do like a deeper rack though. Good luck in your search.

u/spbx · 1 pointr/homegym

Thanks! I heard the same thing about deadlifting with this bar. A rogue Ohio is on the list for sure! And probably another pair of 45 plate that are standard height.

I wouldn't be opposed to a new rack, either - do you have any cost efficient recommendations that would do the trick?

edit: https://www.amazon.com/Valor-Fitness-BD-7-Power-Attachment/dp/B002EJC990

Here's one I saved a while ago. I'm assuming this would be viable for face pulls as well, yes?

u/Pseudo_Stratified · 3 pointsr/homegym

Sometimes the PowerLine PPR200X goes on sale on Amazon for about $377. With this you also get a pull up bar built into it and the ability to add a great pulley system further down the road.

I mulled around getting a half rack for a little while and I am so glad that I opted for a full rack instead. It is very quick to adjust, sturdy, and I love the small foot print it takes up, yet with the pulley system there are so many exercises that you can do. If lifting weights really grabs hold of you, you'll be glad you went with a full rack instead.

u/amras3 · 1 pointr/homegym

Looks like a nice space! It might be worth looking into some inexpensive LED tube lighting on Amazon to brighten it up a bit. Check these bad boys out! Super affordable and easy to install and makes a world of a difference on dark winter days.

Valor cable rack . For the price (~$270 with free shipping on amazon) I had low expectations but it actually works really well! Pulls smoothly and can take a fair amount of weight. Has a small footprint as well. Hope this works for you!

u/deiselaewireless · 2 pointsr/homegym

I don't like how the bench is attached to the rack.

You might like something like this that adds the possibility of doing squats:

http://www.amazon.com/Golds-Gym-XRS-Olympic-Bench/dp/B009PA1KJG/

I have one of these for my home gym:

http://www.amazon.com/Power-Squat-Deadlift-Chrome-Safety/dp/B004UMM4QC/

I like it a lot since I can do pretty much any compound exercise and having the safety pins is a huge plus. Im not sure how I would feel benching heavy weight with the adidas bench when there is no safety mechanism.

u/beowulf_71 · 1 pointr/homegym

The CAP bar is $166 with free shipping on amazon. As far as I could tell from many other threads, this was the best affordable bar to get. I got this as a second bar to do cleans, dead lifts, etc. Though I am reading the replies here and seeing a different CAP bar (which costs more, but doesnt hold as much weight.. and doesnt show on sale..so not sure it is a better bar).

I dont quite know why center knurling is needed.. and let it be known that I am just getting back in to weights, so if I can clean the bar alone I would be happy at this point!

u/_kc_mo_nster · 1 pointr/homegym

does anyone else have this power cage? I recently picked it up and really like it but would enjoy more options on the pull up bar like what's available for the Titan cages. just wondering if anyone has seen or know of options out there i can look into that'll fit properly.

u/blamblampow · 1 pointr/homegym

I have this one @ 107 from amazon prime.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CR4XFIK/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_qFGRzbM3QM3HT

It's... ok. Not bad. I bought it to get started. It's narrow through the shoulders, but it works ok. Doesn't wobble, easy to move around. My next bench will certainly be nicer, I have my eye on the rep fitness FID, but it's a bit more than 100$.

u/HighSpeed556 · 1 pointr/homegym

On Amazon. After tax, it cost me $99 to have this thing shipped right to my door.

http://www.amazon.com/Barbell-Power-Rack-Exercise-Stand/dp/B00HYQP72O?ie=UTF8&keywords=cap%20power%20rack&qid=1465311729&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

And, I'm not gonna lie. It's not the sturdiest rack in the world. I can easily make it sway side to side (albeit not much; it still feels decently solid enough). And I can do chinups and pull ups, but I wouldn't be trying to fucking swing from the pull up bar. But...for $94, you're not going to beat it! I've racked up to 250 lb on it, and it seems to have been fine. It's rated at a 300lb max, and I'm sure if I actually get to the point where I can consistently bench/squat that much damn weight, I'll actually invest in something more robust. For my current fat out of shape ass, I'm benching 110 5x5, so I have nothing to worry about for a little while.

Also, for what it's worth, it has holes that allow you to bolt it down to a platform if you wanted to.

I'm happy with the purchase, for $94!

u/thirdmanin · 1 pointr/homegym

I just bought this CAP bar that comes highly rated and at a fair price if you don't feel like dropping $250 or beyond on a bar. CAP makes some gear many people would scoff at, but this is a quality piece. You can fit a power rack under an 8' tall ceiling, you'll just have to shop around. Do some research, read a bunch of reviews, check out the Workout Equipment forum at Bodybuilding.com. As some others have said, you get for what you pay for, so if this is something you are serious about, don't be afraid to invest a little money upfront for quality equipment. I'm in the process of upgrading a lot of my stuff and I wish I just did it the right way from the get go. That being said, Craigslist is a great resource, you just have to know what you are looking for.

u/Gym-gineer · 2 pointsr/homegym

Hi. Thanks for the effort of sending a picture. BUT I'm sad to say that is a FITNESS GEAR bench. The bench I worked on is under the FITNESS REALITY Brand, which is not the same company as the FITNESS GEAR bench.

I can see what you going for with your modification. That back rest on the FITNESS GEAR bench is tapered, and you wanted the wider part for your shoulders. That pictures does give me and idea for making a bench accommodate the needs of different users for a new bench I am working on.

For your reference, this is the bench I thought you had: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01CR4XFIK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483859569&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=fitness+reality+bench&dpPl=1&dpID=41vzSDbCOxL&ref=plSrch

Check out this post I wrote up
and this

and This for a bench if needed. Cheap combo IMO, but I can't bench 500 lbs yet, so I can't tell u max weight on this bench.

I bought this mat from Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/ProSource-fs-1908-pzzl-Puzzle-Exercise-Interlocking/dp/B00B4IHXRU?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00

I probably would end up buying 2 if I did it again, but honestly the horse stall mats are probably going to work best. The tiles keep coming out when I do some aggressive lifts or HIIT. I'm yet to get a rack, but I'm certain I'll be getting a Titan 21.5" rack for my garage since I can put it back into the wall when not in use and can park my car.

u/JayVeeDi · 2 pointsr/homegym

This is the bench I picked up for bench pressing. $150.

I built a lifting stand set based from End of Three Fitness' plans. The cost was less than $75.

As for a bar and weights. I picked up an olympic bar and plates from a local Salvation Army for about $90. I lucked out and saved myself $300. Check your local thrifts, used sports equipment stores and Sports Authorities.

Forgot to mention, I don't use mats, and control my deadlfts when putting them down and haven't had any complaints from my downstairs neighbors.

Good luck to you!

Otherwise if you can find the CAP OB-86PBCK for around $110 - $130 you're good to go (Walmart | Amazon). I own this and for $112 (the price I paid) I am MORE than happy with the finish / knurling, etc. for doing SS (I'm only 9 weeks in). It will do it's job just fine for a long time.

Just make sure you get a bar with Center Knurling (like the Ohio Power Bar, Chan Bar, the CAP one listed) if you're getting this for SS / SL.

before I read your review I ordered Rep Adjustable Bench – AB-3000 FID

I think I will love this one as there are many positive reviews on amazon/youtube, returning that bench thru UPS pick up lol

u/Jteague101 · 2 pointsr/homegym

That power rack is a really solid choice. It should be compatible with most of Rogue's accessories/attachments because it has the same dimensions as a certain Rogue rack. I would stay away from that bench and purchase a used one from a better brand (Body Solid, Parabody, Parabody Serious Steel, Body Masters, etc.) on craigslist for the same price or way cheaper. I'd also recommend purchasing all your plates used through craigslist for 50-60 cents/lb. The CAP OB-86B is a good choice for a barbell.

u/thejoefletch · 2 pointsr/homegym

This is my main barbell. It doesn't have the knurling in the center, but it still works for me. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001K4OPY2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This one showed up on SlickDeals the other day for just over $100. It's much higher in price now, but it may come back down. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006R4EOXM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?tag=slickappfp-20&ascsubtag=804135fa590311e7b4ca324be198f5910INT&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

For mobility take a look at Got ROM and Alan Thralls YouTube channels.

Farmers bars are great for grip strength. My shoulders were consistently giving my troubles and I tried a ton of different things. One thing that appears to have helped me big time is to strictly use an overhand grip when deadlifting. So I continue up with deadlifting weight until I cannot hold it anymore. Right now I'm at a 2-3 reps with 290. Then move over to straps. The hook grip is also an option.

u/WatermelonRhyne · 2 pointsr/homegym

Just wanted to add on, if he can't find a good used rack this one often goes on sale for $180, but is $250 outside of sale times. It's pretty well liked as a starter cage.

I have a rack of the same design, commonly called the "Atlas" rack.
Amazon Link - Bonanza Link

I just bought this on Bonanza a week or two ago. I believe that this is the best power rack deal on the net right now, and that many of these brands are getting the same overall design manufactured. There is a bit of variation, however, and my rack didn't match their pics exactly:

  • Some versions have J-hooks, others have pegs. Mine has chrome pegs.
  • Some have pegs on the safety bars, others have rounded handles. Mine has chrome safety bars with rounded handles.
  • Some variants have the pull-up bar attach to the front posts, others just behind them. Mine is just behind.
  • Other superficial differences like paint color and hole markings. Mine is a dark, blueish grey finish with no markings.

The rack is solid, I recommend it. The only downside for me is that I'm too tall to overhead press inside of it. No biggie, I just move the bar out and the pegs forward to press.

I also bougt this dip attachment:

Works great with this rack even though it wasn't designed for it. Not going to lie, though, I did put a couple bags of cement on the back "feet" of the rack to reduce the shakiness when using the dip attachment.

> ...which I guess is kinda useful for a rack with multiple users

And single users. I imagine most people bench and squat with the safeties at different heights.

You might also want to consider the Atlas:

http://www.amazon.com/Power-Squat-Deadlift-Chrome-Safety/dp/B004UMM4QC

It's a bit between the two you listed. Nicer finish and a little heavier than the Titan. A little lighter than the NYBB. It has weird hooks though.

If you can swing it I'd save a little more for the HD though:

http://www.titandistributorsinc.com/default/hd-titan-power-rack-with-2-x3-tubes.html

u/PlaceboDefect · 2 pointsr/homegym

Bang for your buck, Titan makes a really nice rack.

Pulley system there's a lot of options. If you're handy, you could even go DIY on this route. Here's a popular one for reference.

Or you could go for an all in one rack, something like the Valor BD-7. I don't know much about it personally.

GHD is a glute hamstring developer. It's the icing on the cake on leg day. There's solo machine, rack attachements, and DIY options on these as well.

u/zarakand · 2 pointsr/homegym

I did the Dick's 300lb weight set, this squat rack and bench from Amazon (watch it on camelcamelcamel) Fitness Reality 810XLT Super Max Power Cage with The 800 lb Capacity Super Max 1000 Weight Bench Combo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NBOVAIJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RANaAb1P2QYMD, and the horse stall mat.

Total came to right around $600.

u/BaggedMerc · 8 pointsr/homegym

Sounds like you're Powerlifting, and not Olympic lifting.

I prefer center knurling for squats, while others don't mind if it's missing. If you're Oly lifting you may not want it.

I would recommend a 1000LBS bar over a 500LBS bar. Not only for the weight rating (keep in mind static weight is not the same as dropped weight), but also for the fact its a higher quality steel.

Many lower end bars are 32mm diameter and much less comfortable. Also quality of bushings etc is well, lower.

EDIT: It seems as if you may be looking for "Bang for the buck", and nothing too fancy. If thats the case, I would highly recommend taking a look at the CAP OB-86B. Its on sale for $109 shipped. I have the Valor Fitness BD-62 Wall Mount Cable Station
https://www.amazon.com/Valor-Fitness-BD-62-Mount-Station/dp/B01LOX2PPO

I like it a lot. It is about a 2 foot square footprint so it doesn't take up much space at all. It comes with 2 individual handles, but I ordered a rope, a curl bar, and a wide lat bar as well. The only 2 issues I had with it was

  1. When repositioning the height of the cable, you can't use the highest settings or the pulleys bump into each other. This hasn't been an issue for me. 2) I had to bolt the base to the floor with a small angle bracket from Lowes. The top bolts to the wall, but the bottom doesn't and when doing exercises like curls that lift up on the cable, the base wanted to slide around.
u/deeetsss · 1 pointr/homegym

The standard recommendation here is usually this bar its the best bang for your buck bar. A lot of people start out with it and if you outgrow it it makes a great beater bar.

u/TheMadPeterson · 3 pointsr/homegym

If you want to save money, go the Craigslist route.

For new stuff?

The best "cheap" barbell is the CAP Barbell's OB-86B. Anything cheaper and you run the risk of getting a shitty, rusted out bar that will fall apart as soon as you put more than 100lbs on it.

As for weights? The cheapest are CAP's 300 lb Olympic weight sets. They weights are crappy, and you may have to file down the holes so it doesn't scrape you bar, but it's the cheapest you'll find brand new. Take the shitty bar that comes with it and sell it on Craigslist for like $50 (if it doesn't arrive already broken).

I've heard mixed things about the Titan rack, but it's probably the best of the budget racks. Supposedly, the quality is improving.

u/WolfHawkfield · 1 pointr/homegym

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if the assembly instructions are unclear? Here's some of the other reviews saying the safety bars don't fit:

https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-X-Class-Commercial-Capacity/product-reviews/B01N7Z2GGN/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_viewpnt_rgt?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=critical&reviewerType=all_reviews

https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R496ERP075QSY/ref=cm_cr_othr_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B01N7Z2GGN

As I looked into this more, I see that actually most reviews aren't about the safety bars not fitting -- most reviews are about the safety bars being difficult/time consuming to adjust.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/ROGJXZOJGULYW/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B01N7Z2GGN

It’s an inexpensive foam (not rubber) puzzle piece mat that I ordered off amazon . This is 3 sets shown.

It’s actually very warm to stand/lay on, even on the cold basement floor. If you leave weights on it (like overnight), it will leave an indentation, but it’s always popped back up. I’m happy with it so far, but it’s too early to give a proper review of its durability.

I’ll upgrade to a plywood platform with rubber mats once I’m in the new house and have a rack, but I’ll likely keep this for floor work (stretching, yoga, etc.).

https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-810XLT-Super-Power/dp/B01N4I8FOY?th=1

Are their comparable ones of less price? For example, I don't need 800# capacity, and I actually don't need a pullup bar. In fact one that high in my basement, I would not be able to get my head above the bar (I have 85" of room - this one goes to 83.5" apparently).

$400? for $200 you can get a full sized squat rack on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4I8FOY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used to have one of those benches in the CL ad and on the highest setting I'd still have to do a 1/2" squat to get started with squats, plus there's no safety bars to catch if you fail and that goes for bench press too on the lack of safety.

Another hundred bucks and you've got a good quality bench:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OHQALU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have these laid on on my garage gym where I don't have plywood or horse stall mats. They're a great value for what you get (6 large tiles).

u/peginus · 3 pointsr/homegym

Here's what the garage looked like last week.

The only decent gym in my area charges $50 per month and it's always packed, so I figured i'd try building a gym for the price of roughly a one year membership (~$600).

Here's the rundown:

  • Standard weights (220 lbs), dumbbells, ez bar and standard bar on CL - $100
  • Olympic weights (400 lbs), olympic bar and pair of 35 lb hex dumbbells on CL - $200
  • Olympic bar from Amazon - $70
  • Power Rack from Amazon - $200
  • Bench from Amazon - $100
  • Floor mats - $80
  • Weight stand from play it again sports - $25
  • 5 54x24 mirrors on CL - $40

    Total - $815

I went a bit over my budget, but I might still end up selling some of those Olympic plates. I justified the extra I spent by telling myself I can always just sell most of this stuff on CL and still end up with a relatively minimal loss compared to what I originally bought the stuff for.

I'm also probably going to buy a pair of dip handles and something to tag onto the side of the cage to hold the rest of the weights i've got stacked in the corner.
u/soundbytegfx · 1 pointr/homegym

What bench did you get? I'm contemplating between that rack and this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004UMM4QC/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1373255264&sr=8-2&pi=SL75

Trying to decide what to go with budget wise, as I'd also need a decent bench, preferably FID. The IM Superbench looks awesome, but a little pricey for me since I don't want to drop more than $350 for a rack. In the meantime, my CL searches continue...

Copying and pasting a comment from a previous thread -

I did a DIY setup, with everything coming from Amazon except the carabiners, which you can pretty much find anywhere. Here's the links for the parts:

Steel Cable: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YDK49M/

Wire Rope Clips: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00III7IP6/

Pulleys: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BD6BSQ/

Thimbles: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038YY3LW/

Tie-down Straps (for hanging pulleys from the rack): https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AS5QC1C/

Loading Pin: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IRY5U14/

Assuming you have some tools around, this should be everything you would need. I recommend a bolt cutter if you don't already have one. I thought I would be able to cut the steel cable with the wire cutters built into my pliers and it was not happening. Ended up having to make a trip to the tool shop this morning to get that.

I literally just bought the Titan Rack w/ dip bar - very happy with it and with free shipping you can't beat the price.

You can skip the spotter arms since the rack comes with safety pins - as long as you squat in the rack the pins will have your back.

I wouldn't get that bar from Dick's due to the low weight limit. I bought the $150 CAP bar from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001K4OPY2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00).

I sourced all of my weights from Craigslist as I didn't want to spend more than $1.25/lb for them and many places bumper weights go for $1.50-$1.75/lb. I spent $1.25/lb for a few bumper plates and < $1/lb for some steel weights.

I got four 4'x6'x3/4" horse mats from a local feed store for $40/each.

With weights and everything I'm in for $900 but I haven't gotten a bench yet.

I was looking at the fitness reality rack, seems to be good value given it has decent reviews. there's a bundle with a bench priced at 310 right now here, apparently rated to 1000 pounds

Walmart also works as well. there's this cheapass shitty gold's set that I was looking at.

If you want to look another route and if you have the room for it, I've heard great things about this cable crossover. If you don't have the room but do have a wall you can bolt into, there's also this one from Valor. Neither is much more expensive than the Rogue Pulley, and you might get more bang for your buck.

I don't own either, but I did a lot of research on these over the last few months. I was debating between one of these options for a while before I ended up scoring a half cage/smith on craigslist with a top crossover and top/bottom lat pulley system attached.

Just pulled the trigger on this guy: Fitness Reality 810XLT Super Max Power Cage. Anyone here have one?

u/TitaniuIVI · 3 pointsr/homegym

I would go for the rack since it's a lot more versatile than any individual piece of equipment. Also 8x8 isn't very big so you'll want to eliminate as many unitaskers as possible. With a budget of $600 you should try and look at used equipment on OfferUp or Craigslist to get better quality equipment, but new is not out of the question.

Here's a list of what you can get for a pretty decent setup at $600...

(Prices are sale prices. Sign up for CamelCamelCamel or Keepa and set alerts for the items on Amazon. The frequently go down to the prices listed)

Item | Price
---|---
Fitness Reality 810XLT Power Rack | $150
Fitness Reality Adjustable Bench | $85
CAP Barbell 300 lb. Olympic Grip Weight Set | $180
4 ft. x 6 ft. x 3/4 in. Thick Rubber Stall Mat | $40 x 3
Valor Fitness MB-A BD-7 Dip Handle Accessory Set | $35
CAP Barbell Olympic 2-Inch Plate and Bar Storage Rack | $30

That gets you to the $600 budget on the dot.

This should cover most of your needs. You can replace the plate tree with some Titan weight pegs to hang from the rack if you want that instead. You can also just throw some plywood on the floor instead of the floor mats or mix and match plywood and floor mats.

This is almost the same setup I have except I was able to pick up some dumbells and plates off OfferUp so it came out a little cheaper. So far my home gym setup is at $520 and all I'm missing is the stall mats so I should be hitting the $600 goal myself once I get those.

I guess it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish but I would get something like this and add on weights and a bar

u/HomegymFriend · 13 pointsr/homegym

As mentioned before I think squatting in this set up would be an issue as you are pretty tall. If I had a 600 budget heres what I would go for:

I was considering using the bar included in the Dick's set at first, as the reviews are decent and I'm a beginner so the weight wouldn't be too great. Then I thought I could get this CAP bar soon after (as I've read a lot of good comments about it), or just go all-in on a Rogue bar or something for $200-300. Do you have any suggestions for good bars in that range? I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the variety.

I got this bench off Amazon - can't remember if Titan didn't have their benches when I ordered it last fall or if I just went with this one since it was cheaper and had a higher weight capacity.

I've done 225 at ~190 bw on it and it felt fine - stores flat too just by removing one pin if you need that. I just roll mine up to a wall and store in vertical but not folded. Is a normal bench height too, sounds like the Titan ones are higher than normal.

Was about to invest in this myself until Amazon's price unexpectedly jumped $190 to 789. Not sure what's up, but neither Fitness Reality or Amazon was willing to help. Guess I'll wait and see if it drops again, as the previous price held for 6 months, practically the entire life of the product under the FR brand name...

Get this one. Those have iffy reviews. This bar is universally well liked. And in expensive

I got this one on sale for $75. It's not the fanciest bench ever, but it was inexpensive and it's sturdy and easy to handle.

u/panaceator · 2 pointsr/homegym

This rack is cheaper and amazing. I have it. The cost belies the quality. Check out the reviews.

u/Galotha · 7 pointsr/homegym

I got this off amazon for 28 dollars. Seems fine so far.

I'm still just starting up with the home gym. So I don't yet have much. But here is what I have:
Power Rack:
http://www.treadmillfactory.ca/fit505-power-rack -- got this for $229 though it is backordered at the moment.

Bar: https://www.amazon.ca/Barbell-1000-Pound-Solid-7-Feet/dp/B001K4OPY2 -- got for $165

3/4 inch Rubber mat from fitnessdepot for $50

I'm currently looking out for plates from kijiji and the likes. Hope this helps.

Edit: I also bought a 4' x 8' piece of plywood from home depot which I'll cut to size as the rubber mat and just lay it underneath the mat for additional cushioning

u/btothefifth · 3 pointsr/homegym

Can someone critique my plan for creating a home gym:

I am going to get 3 of these mats and get 18 2'x4' pieces of plywood. I'll lay the plywood 2 pieces thick in this formation and put the mats on top. I'll place a power rack in this formation such that the entrance is facing to the right. This will be done in a room on the second floor of my house--will this be enough to dampen the impact of deadlifts (up to at least 400 lbs)?

u/AppleTreeShadow · 2 pointsr/homegym

Is the rep bench this one? Where did you buy it? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00YNS7D9G/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523242338&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=rep+fitness+adjustable+bench&dpPl=1&dpID=41stcs3vI1L&ref=plSrch

I'll have to research Titan safety issues especially since that coincidentally coincides with all their cages being out of stock hmmmmmm.....

u/SleepEatLift · 2 pointsr/homegym

It's silly to spend extra for a beater bar with the Rogue name. Just get a regular beater bar.

The Cap OB-86B on Amazon is pretty reputable at $140.
