It's an EyeDro.

http://eyedro.com/home-electricity-monitors/

Basically, you install it in your load panel and then it gives you an estimate of how much power you use. It's not 100% accurate, maybe 95% or so (?), but it's good enough.

Don't get the wireless version, instead get the basic one and a wireless extender like this which is cheaper (although now you have two devices to plug in).

I now also have an Ecobee3 thermostat which has awesome reports, much better than my old Nest.

u/livestrongbelwas · 13 pointsr/homeowners

I went with these. I don't know enough to compare different types, but I can say for sure that metal contacts are extremely sensitive to water and since I bought them two years ago they've given me an early heads up about leaks on 4 occasions, easily the best cost:payoff investment I've made as a homeowner.

I don’t want anyone to think I’m making money off it or anything. But it’s the AirThings monitor from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Corentium-Detector-Airthings-223-Lightweight/dp/B00H2VOSP8

It’s not cheap but I feel better having it set up in my daughters’ bedroom and “knowing”. I also hope that I’ll be able to confirm my radon fan is working as the levels should drop down to less than the outdoor average of 0.4 (or so I’ve about others on /r/homeimprovement).

u/JacksonWarhol · 1 pointr/homeowners

Sorry. It's a wall sconce. It's to be hard wired but my wife and I want to use them as bed-side lighting so we want to be able to plug it in to the wall and use a dimmer adapter.

https://smile.amazon.com/GHB-Sconces-Lights-Aluminum-Design/dp/B019YWWSXG/ref=pd_sim_sbs_60_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4QVHZB3XN4261FFM6YSC

There are ones out there that already do what we want, but we like this style. Is it possible to convert?

thanks

I think it's very odd that your multi meter only goes up to 8v unless it's a dedicated 8v battery tester. Some multimeters have a fuse that prevents them from overloading so if you did try to test a 12v battery I would expect the needle to pin to the top for about half a second before that fuse blew and then it wouldn't read anything until you change the fuse. So it could be a bad fuse on your tester.

I recommend a smart charger like this: https://www.amazon.com/NOCO-G1100-UltraSafe-Battery-Charger/dp/B004LX3AXQ/ref=pd_sbs_263_12?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B004LX3AXQ&pd_rd_r=3be48e80-db93-11e8-8b2a-43f93729c796&pd_rd_w=yGlNN&pd_rd_wg=trGW4&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=7d5d9c3c-5e01-44ac-97fd-261afd40b865&pf_rd_r=JD2NDBVDGT98STE29GAZ&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=JD2NDBVDGT98STE29GAZ

They'll condition the battery and you can usually get a better life out of them. It'll tell me when the battery won't take a charge so that I know when to replace it.

I've been lurking on the r/diy and r/homeowners for a long time while I was going through my house hunting. [Settlement is August 21... so exciting].

I don't remember the post but this book came highly recommended from a few other redditors. I just bought it and at first glance it looks fantastic for the initial concept of 'what does this mean and what does it entail.

u/BoredITGuy · 6 pointsr/homeowners

lmao

However considering the "redneck meth head who owns a giant dog" detail, perhaps this could be helpful for OP...

Nature's Miracle was mediocre.

Rocco and Roxies has worked much better for us.

> The furnace has been turning on and off

Well, turn off the furnace until the house cools down. No sense in opening the windows if you are still generating heat.

> but we have radiators and I can't tell if they're actually putting out heat

Are the radiators hot? If not, then they aren't producing heat. Find a thermometer (meat thermometer, or even a cheap one from Walmart that you would use on the outside of your house or something like https://www.amazon.com/Habor-Hygrometer-Thermometer-Temperature-Greenhouse/dp/B072XHJLFD?ref_=ast_bbp_dp&th=1&psc=1 and place it near your radiator and watch it for a while.

Throw a box fan in the window to pull in cold air from outside.

u/MISTRESSshake · 1 pointr/homeowners

I was in a similar situation, I moved from a 900sqft apartment that was all carpet except for our tiny kitchen and even tinier bathroom swiffer was plenty. My new house is like 3x’s bigger and all tile this mop has been like a god send!

This might help: /r/anxiety

But seriously, it'll all be good, dude. I just closed on my first house two weeks ago. The inspection should've covered you on anything major. Your homeowners insurance will be there to protect you from bigger issues. And anything else that goes wrong will be small and fixable. My house is 80+ years old and I'm finding little things here and there that need fixing/tune ups. There are so many resources out there to help you. I bought this book. It's old, but still relevant and can teach you about how things work in your house. Highly recommend. And anything you're not comfortable fixing yourself, ask around for recommendations on local handymen.

magnets are a neat idea

I started buying these a few years ago and it's worked out ok for me

u/eurusdcny · 1 pointr/homeowners

Thank you, TheSingingKid! Seems I have spend a bit more (although I have already spent a lot to set things up) I found two types. One is conventional and cheap, like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UWP07LK/

The other is crawlspace specific and expensive, like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LW8WRUP/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

Do I need the 2nd one, powerful but almost 5 times pricier, to make things right?

I bought this mop and bucket set when I moved into my new house and it has been my most prized possession ever since!

u/ilovemacandcheese · 1 pointr/homeowners

Perhaps so. They're cheap and can save you lots of time and money. Here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QF19F9Z/

Get a radon detector from Amazon and find out how well it works .

Usually a sump piit needs a pump to mitigate water and a pump. Is part of that. Usually the weeping tile goes into the pit so water gets pumped. The whole thing could be encapsulated for radon mitigation.

I use this one in my basement:

Corentium Home Radon Detector by Airthings 223 Portable, Lightweight, Easy-to-Use, (3) AAA Battery Operated, USA Version, pCi/L

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H2VOSP8

u/Bonfire_ · 3 pointsr/homeowners

Oh, I hear you - I'm in Indiana. Keeping them open for a couple hours for the first week is to lower your current high level. Afterwards, you should only need to open a window briefly (I usually do 15m or so) every day or two to keep levels low.

I've got one of these meters: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H2VOSP8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I keep an eye on it and try to keep my levels below 3. Anytime it creeps up, I crack my window until it goes back down. It's a bit of a hefty initial investment of $200 for the meter, but it's so worth it when compared with the expensive systems.

u/jefferyphillips · 8 pointsr/homeowners

If it is from Pet stains from the previous owners or something use this

It works very well. A cat of mine was having some health problems and stopped using the litter box. We used this and you can't smell it at all now.
