SOME POINTERS WHICH MIGHT HELP:
Pick up a digital audio workstation (DAW). If you're doing everything live you might want to use Audacity. Beyond that, pretty much every digital audio workstation does the same thing beyond how their workflow is organised. They all have free trials so that you can get a sense of which one works best for you! I personally use FL Studio, but other DAWs that I could recommend are Cubase, which is really good especially for editing audio, Live, which is good for doing quick arrangements and mixes, even if you're playing music live, and Logic, which has some fantastic mixing tools out of the box, but is sadly Apple exclusive. As microphones go, pretty much anything can record audio decently once you get the hang of mixing, but for something comparatively quiet, I'd recommend a ribbon microphone like a Royer 121, which I've worked with before, and the quality is absolutely pristine. The only issues are ribbon mics tend to be pretty pricey, and they break if you expose them to loud noises or blow on them (I'm not joking about that, by the way). If they're a way out of your budget, pretty much any mic you can buy at a music store can still give professional results once you get the hang of how to use it, which isn't anywhere near as hard as it sounds. Astartus (who did this and this ) also recommended Melodyne, which, from what I can tell, is fantastic audio correction. As for the act of actually writing music, I'm sorry, I can't help you. I'm a total hack who does almost everything by mistake.

GarageBand is super easy, and more capable than you might think. It definitely has limitations (some of which I ran into making this track), but you can definitely put together interesting music with it. For making Homestuck/chiptune-sounding stuff, you'll want the magical 8bit plugin.

My biggest recommendation would be to use premade samples carefully. The GarageBand sample library is very high quality, but not very big, so a lot of the best samples are pretty overused and will immediately stand out to an experienced listener.

So yeah. I'd recommend picking up a cheap USB MIDI controller--something like this would work--and seeing what you can come up with. It's a lot of fun

This is probably the greatest advice!
I think one of the bigger complaints I've seen at anime cons about Homestuck cosplayers has to do with grey paint getting everywhere. :( Which is an easy thing to avoid (and makes your hotel staff a lot happier when they have to room clean later on!)

Ben Nye makes a pretty good product called Final Seal that works quite well after a translucent powder has been applied. After the fact, you'll probably want to invest in a pack of makeup removing wipes- I've used these to great success, but I am pretty sure any disposable remover will work just fine.

Have fun. :)

I personally prefer Tolstoy. I wasn't a huge fan of Crime and Punishment either though most Russians will [correctly] tell you that Crime and Punishment is not his best, and that you need to read The Idiot or Notes From the Underground before making a judgement on Dostoevsky. It also helps to find a good translation (Pevear & Volkhonsky are probably the best Russian>English literary translators ever to live), and to realize that Crime and Punishment was published in serial, while Dostoevsky was essentially broke, so he was stretching it a little as he was getting paid by the page.

I find that Tolstoy tends to make his characters feel a little more real, and that they tend to whinge at least slightly less about things. Probably the best place to start is to find a copy of Great Short Works of Leo Tolstoy, and to pick through it. The Death of Ivan Ilyich, and Hadji Murat are probably my favorites.

The thing a lot of people find rough about Tolstoy is that he has a pretty clear religious (though certainly not evangelical) and philosophical agenda is some of his works (he basically renounced worldly possessions and lived as a farm owner), and while it gives some of his characters great depth, the meta-physics can go on for a while. I find War and Peace is guilty of this in a few places (though still an amazing read, if you have the time).

Aw, sorry to hear about it :( Hopefully things start looking up soon though!

Heh, I guess there is a sort of pattern there :) And yep, Happyface did have a good ending!

Yeah, I'm pretty excited! And how'd you know? I guess if you've seen the other CS's, you'd know the amount of times I bought the color blue. Or maybe it's just a reflection of my personality, idk.

I'm glad you like them! :D And I chose the Zotz because it reminded me of [this other candy] (http://www.amazon.com/Roshen-Mr-Fizzy-Candy-Shipuchka/dp/B00QWOT23O) I tried (and enjoyed) with some friends once. I thought they were the same, but even though they weren't, I still liked them a lot!

Heh, thanks for indulging me for my little exposition-y thing :)

In the meantime, draw everything. Everything. EVERYTHING.

Keep a sketch book with you always! Draw people waiting for the bus, cars parked outside, city blocks, landscapes, trees, ideas, concepts, doodles, nonsense.

Take pictures of things and use them for reference. Constantly! Can't figure out how an arm looks like in a certain pose, get someone to pose the same way and take a shot with your phone. Its not "cheating" and most artists worth their salt will stare at you like you're insane if you told them to do a large scale project with no live or photo references.

Go to figure drawing meetups. There's usually some at art schools or in any big city. You will be terrible at first but drawing people is a good way to train your eye.

Copy your favorite artist. Not just draw from, but try to copy a whole piece of art, from start to finish, line for line, as closely as possible. Do this a lot! It will help you understand why they put this thing there, and put that thing here, and drew that thing like this.

Its the same reason musicians practice other people's work before they start composing their own!

Figure out who their influence are, and do the same thing with them.

If you're looking for books to get you started, here are some good ones.

Get Avast, it's significantly better than Norton, also it's free!

As for Windows, Windows 8 is about $100 right now, but I'd recommend it since 7 isn't much cheaper. You might be able to find a better deal if you look around though. Also, if you're a college student you might be able to get it free through your school.

My friend has a mohawk and cosplays Tavros. You'll want to get two black wire headbands. They might have rhinestones or other sparkly bits on them; just snap those off. Weave two of them partially together so you have one long headband that's doubled up in the middle. Bend the ends straight outward. You should end up with something that looks sort of like an arrow-through-the-head, sans arrowy bits. The wire that's sticking out can then be inserted into your horns; this works especially well with foam-core horns, which are by far the best for Tavros. (You don't want heavy horns.) If you want the horns to be more stable, make a second headband and use them in parallel. If the horns press uncomfortably against your head, hot glue a small patch of felt to the base of each horn, covering the wire.

Edit: You want something like this.

I can help!!!!!!

It sounds like your daughter is cosplaying Aradia Megido

Ok, I have a giant post on makeup [here] (http://www.reddit.com/r/homestuck/comments/1fb1df/cosplay_advice/ca8vwk8) that may help you (sorry about the profanity). But I'll try to condense it down to points for a younger cosplayer.

In your situation, I would 100% recommend Snazzaroo brand paint. It's a water-activated makeup that you apply with a damp makeup sponge.

To seal it, she will need a sealant. This is necessary for anyone wearing body paint. If not, the paint gets on everything, and other people get very, very angry about it. Seriously, if the sealant is unavailable, I would really highly suggest that she not wear the makeup at all, which is completely understandable/common for casual Homestuck Troll (the species of the character) cosplays.

EDIT: haha wow I wasn't expecting gold. Thank you to whoever that was!

Here this is a link to a cancer necklace on Amazon not the same but good enough in my book and for the homestuck seal of approval in the comments there's a person who says that their son loved it because of a specific Homestuck reason.

u/whereyatrulyare · 31 pointsr/homestuck

Thank you for this fine blessing.

First off, I find this really interesting. I think this is the earliest drawing Hussie did of the Beta Kids, before Homestuck was even conceptualized. I'm interested in the symbol on Jade Harley's shirt, it looks like an upside Leaf. It's weird how Jade's symbol was the one that took so long to eventually settle on. Also, I'm curious as to what that Jackhammer looking machine is, possibly something that would have belonged to the Phernalia Registry? Also, Hussie may have considered an isometric top-down style at some point, or was simply figuring out how John's design would work in three-dimensional space/from a different perspective.

There's this concept art for a Problem Sleuth game, though I'm not sure how far this dates back, I'm assuming pre-Homestuck/early Homestuck. Still, a crying shame it never came to fruition.

As a side-note, friendly reminder that there was a planned Midnight Crew walkaround that we never got.

Wizardy Herbert is an actual text, btw. It wasn't made up for Homestuck. I always found it interesting how Hussie reincorporated ideas from his older works into Homestuck in new and interesting ways, not just Wizardy Herbet, but And It Don't Stop, Whistles : The Starlight Calliope and a whole bunch of others.

Pre-Homestuck Hussie is a lot different to post-Homestuck Hussie, I think it's suffice to say.

I'm so jealous of Andrew Hussie's art capabilities. The simplified designs he's prone to using severely disguise his actual skill/talent.

I have never heard of "Eidophusikon" before this moment, so I looked it up. Apparently it was a book that Hussie did the illustrations for. I have no idea if it's good or not though.

Aw, I had forgotten about the Captcha Calculator. Friendly reminder that these still haven't been ported/adapted, and when Flash stops being supported in 2020, Homestuck is Homefucked

Final note : Friendly reminder that Dirk/Bro did absolutely nothing wrong. Look at this face. Does this look like the face of a villain?

u/Vriska-8 · 15 pointsr/homestuck

Thanks! I actually borrowed the facepaint from my friend so I'm not really sure which one it was, but I'm pretty sure it was this one. Thumbs up to you too!

u/TheGeorge · 4 pointsr/homestuck

I'd suggest going Deadmau5 technique, much comfier and lighter too. Buy a Acrylic Globe to start.

I'll try and find a link in a sec, oh and go and ask /r/cosplayers they're super helpful.

link (I like this one more)
and link

u/kroneland · 3 pointsr/homestuck

It's better than mine so far! Where did you get that wig? I have this Carol Brady type thing and I'm looking to upgrade.

Also I want to recommend something. I bought these for my cosplay. Now it can look like you're carry around booze without you having to spill anything.

u/Zemedelphos · 7 pointsr/homestuck

Here's a link to the same sealant on Amazon, though only in the 2oz spray bottle.
