This is a copy and paste for a guide I'm working on, but hopefully it'll help. Check out CocoUrth coals! If you don't want to read the massive amount of text below, then trust me and just go with a Shika hookah. Lifetime warranty on them :)

-----

Hello! This is my guide on what to look for while buying a hookah. While it'll be inherently subjective, I'll be doing my best to make it as objective as possible. The last guide (in sidebar) on Hookah By Price contained a lot of information I wanted to get out, but is too much trouble for me to try keeping it up to date. So instead of telling you what hookah I recommend, I want to go more in depth into what you look for when you're buying a hookah.

The Smoke is Not Dependent on the Hookah

  • The hookah itself has very little effect on smoke production
  • Think of your entire set-up as a car - the hookah itself is the body of the car, and the shisha/coals/bowls make up the engine.
    • You can spend a lot of money on a nice aesthetically pleasing hookah, but if you don't know how to pack a bowl, manage your heat, or if you don't have good shisha, the production of the hookah won't be any good. It'd be like putting the engine of a first gen Prius into the body of a Ferrari.
  • The Smoke and the Draw - Given the same heat and same pack, the bowl will produce the same amount of smoke - the gauge of the draw will determine how quickly you can intake the smoke. The volume of the smoke would not change and has nowhere to go when drawn into the hookah other than your lungs. Simply put, the size of your set up, the gauge of your set up, has no real impact on the clouds.
    • A wider gauge hookah will obviously be an easier draw (given that the airflow is consistent through the hose, bowl, and hose port), but it will not get you bigger clouds.
    • A narrow gauge hookah will be a tougher draw, but because it takes longer to intake the same amount of smoke, you'll "taste" it more since the smoke will pass through your mouth for a longer period of time.

      The Material

  • The material of a hookah usually won't effect your session, but it makes a difference in maintenance and longevity. The part of your hookah where the material is most important to is the downstem. The downstem is in water, and deals with a lot of moisture. If the stem of a hookah starts rusting, it's time to retire it. We're already inhaling smoke, no need to inhale rust particles.
    • Stainless Steel - There's good stainless steel and bad stainless steel. The vast majority of hookahs (if not all) that use stainless steel use steel in the 300 series. The main difference that's of concern to us is how resistant to corrosion the stainless steel is. Stainless steel has chromium in it, which forms protective layer on the steel to keep it from rusting. Damage to the steel can expose non-chromium covered areas to oxygen, and begin rusting the steel before another layer forms. It's more complicated than this, but good stainless steel is hard to damage and almost impossible to rust unintentionally and bad stainless steel rusts very easily.
      • Low Grade Stainless Steel
        • There's no regulation on saying what sort of stainless steel you use. A rule of thumb is that if they're not advertising high quality stainless steel, it's not high quality stainless steel.
      • High Quality Stainless Steel
        • Series 316 stainless steel is what's generally regarded as "surgical quality" stainless steel. It's very resistant to corrosion and is one of the best materials you could use for a hookah. Unfortunately, there's no regulation for what can be called "surgical stainless steel". They feel the same as their weaker (normal) 304/303 counterparts, and manufacturers don't usually advertise what steel they use. Your best bet if you're looking for a stainless steel hookah is to get one from a brand that advertises "aerospace/surgical stainless steel".

  • Copper
    • One of the safest choices for a hookah’s downstem. Copper has been used to transport drinking water for a long time in the States, and continues to be used because it’s not subject to corrosion like stainless steel. A copper pipe downstem is a downstem that’ll last longer than you’ll ever want to smoke. The one big downside to copper downstems is that while it doesn’t corrode, it’ll oxidize and change colors (e.g. Statue of Liberty). The green oxidation can be cleaned very easily, but you’ll feel the urge to clean this more than you would a stainless steel hookah. Most copper tends to be softer than steel too, but there shouldn’t be instances where you’re testing this.

  • Brass
    • Similar to copper, it’s a safe choice for a hookah downstem. It’s rare, but it’s a great choice. Won’t corrode, but harmlessly oxidizes like copper. Softer than steel, but there’s never a need to test that.

  • Aluminum
    • Great material for a hookah. It won’t corrode, and it won’t change color like brass and copper. Additionally, high grade aluminum is harder than most copper (2.-2.9 on Moh's Hardness Scale, compared to copper's 2.5-3 rating). There’s no real downside for aluminum usage. Also allomantically inert ^^^^that’s ^^^^a ^^^^joke.

  • Glass
    • Doesn’t ghost much, very easy to clean, but tends to be very expensive and fragile. High quality glass hookahs (a rising industry standard seems to be 7mm thick) go for hundreds of dollars and are much more expensive than their metal counterparts. In the linked picture, note how /u/gayhomophob3 put froyo in his base and can do so without worrying about residual froyo since it's glass.

      Price Range

  • $0-$50 - There aren't many high quality hookahs in this range (if any).
    • Mya Econo Line - Cheap stainless steel hookahs that tend to be a little bit higher quality than other hookahs in the same range. A big reason why these hookahs are recommended in this price range is that they're compatible with some great upgrades. Not all cheap hookahs work well with high quality upgrades like a Dream Hose or a Crown Cloud phunnel bowl, but they're good fits for the Mya Econo Line. Lastly, the base on the smaller Myas are very sturdy, and there's very low risk in knocking something over.
  • $50-$100 - This is where you'll see the potential for a jump in quality. There are many hookahs that fall within this price range, but a lot of them pale in comparison to two brands that stand out to me as clear choices above all the others.
    • Shika Hookahs - Shika hookahs have become a favorite (if not favorite) brand of hookahs for a variety of reasons - they're at a great cross section between affordability and quality. They have hookahs at under 100, and over 250.
The majority of their hookahs are completely made with brass and copper - unlike many other "brass/copper" hookahs, which are just shelled with brass and copper. Shika hookahs also often come with thick glass bases and washable hoses. Shika's are hand welded and engraved. While that almost always indicates a high level of craftsmanship, there are imperfections on occasion. Furthermore, Shika has a good reputation for great customer service when imperfections are found.
      • The Accessories - Shika stands above KM for beginner smokers or first time buyers in large part because of the quality accessories it comes with. Rather than an poorly made Egyptian bowl and a unwashable hose that is frequently made out of recycled newspaper (the handle), Shika comes with the Shika Typhoon/Mammoth hose and the Shika Oblivion/Sandstorm bowl. Not the absolute best, but extremely good for what comes with a hookah.
    • Khalil Mamoon - KM hookahs are an industry standard and for good reason. They're like Toyotas - Most of their stuff is good higher end entry level hookahs. They'll give you a lot of mileage and you'll rarely have any problems with them. But like how you can upgrade to a Lexus from a Toyota (same company), you can go from your "entry" level KM's to some "nicer" stuff as well. Something else to keep in mind is that not all KM's are made equally. KM's in this price range will tend not to be brass. Some, in this price range and above, are indeed mostly brass and copper and thus will probably never rust (though you have to watch for oxidation) but still have stainless steel downstems and bowl ports.

  • $100+ - After committing to spend more than 100 dollars on a hookah, you'll have enough options that it's about finding a material that you're comfortable with, and then finding a hookah that's aesthetically pleasing to you.

    My Top Picks by Category

  • Modern Brass - Sahara Smoke Executive Hookah
  • Aluminum - Shishabucks Cloud | One

I like to consider myself a Hookah enthusiast at this point, I love the gadgets that improve my experience, and I'll list you a few. I'd also like to point out that I get my supplies from two places:
www.amazon.com
www.hookah-shisha.com

If you haven't invested yet, there are some things that are basically a bare minimum in the hookah world(my opinion).. Coconut coals (I always recommend Coco nara, but Never X hale worked pretty well also. I've had some other ones that were.. well, bad... Avoid anything with paint on the outside, splurge and just get the coco nara.)
http://www.amazon.com/Hookah-Shisha-Natural-Charcoals-Pieces/dp/B001B38GG0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453620347&sr=8-1&keywords=coco+nara

It's also worth noting that The Mystique ice tips are probably the #1 largest improvement for your hookah-smoking experience. I'd recommend getting them off of amazon, if you smoke hookah for over 2 hours at a time, it's probably worth getting 3 of them:
http://www.amazon.com/Mystique-Ice-Hose-Chiller-Hookah/dp/B00BU925GC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453620325&sr=8-1&keywords=mystique+ice+tip

You'll also need a hose that can fit the Mystique tips. I repeatedly have been satisfied with Nammor hookah hoses, but never really bothered to look for another hose that can house a Mystique tip.

In my experience, the hookah doesn't really matter too much, the key thing is usually the ash tray, the basin hole size (cleaning), and optionally, if you pass it a lot, swivel bases.

The hookah I've been using for the last year has been very good to me, the only real downside is cleaning it is a pain. See here:
https://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-127-comet-one-hose-hookah.html

My favorite Tobacco has been for quite some time, Starbuzz, I also like Fantasia, I enjoyed Tangiers, but the majority of my friends don't, and you are pretty likely to get sick off of it if you're smoking with less than 3 people. You probably will anyways. These I'll pick up at local retailers, or hookah-shisha, my previous experience on Amazon has been pretty bad with tobacco quality, unfortunately.

I've been very satisfied with my (two) lotuses. I got an extra one for free thanks to Amazons carrier, I called them and they sent me an extra one, two days later a neighbor delivered my package saying it was left at their door.

Sorry if I rambled here, it's my first post and I wanted to (hopefully) be regarded as helpful. Best of luck!

Purge is when you blow out the smoke from the chamber to clear it. That is really weird about the hose... Amira maintains that it is a surgical grade silicone so it should not ghost (hold the flavors like you are saying)..

but a cleaning with baking soda and hot water followed by a through rise in cold water should wash all the flavors out. I clean my hookah and bowl after every session to get the fullest flavor possible.

The Amira has a very wide gauge downstem, so a shallower phunnel bowl might work better than a deep bowl. So to improve your setup, I'd definitely get a HMD, and a bowl that holds it well. You can make that a 2 hose hookah very easily, if you watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6lfhYd_y4U. You might not be able to get a KL in SA, but you can def get a chimney, that would be my goto in case I could not get access to a HMD. something like this. https://www.amazon.com/Silicone-Narghile-Charcoal-Narguile-Accessory/dp/B078SP1LF6. Ratings are BS. If you are enjoying your session and don't burn the tobacco, It's a 10/10.

edit: another example of a chimney: https://www.reddit.com/r/hookah/comments/cn0yjv/relaxing_night/

I've got a kaloud lotus on this phunnel bowl with this hookah and use Coco Nara coals...

Couple questions: what is the best brand of shisha to use with this setup? I've used starbuzz, currently own some al-fahker but havent smoked it yet, and have been smoking lately Fantasia Peach Fuzzy Navel because I really like the flavor - about 20 grams I would guess per bowl. I suspect possibly other brands / amounts of shisha might work better for this reason or that, I just don't know because I havent tried. Not 100% sure how packed I should be having my bowls.

With the Lotus, I see people saying to use 3 coco nara coals in it, but theres no way I think I can get those all to fit in there at once, ESPECIALLY not when their lit and hot?? So I normally cut one coal in half, and use 2 halves + 1 full coal... I don't know if this is normal or detrimental at all for the sesh. How even do you fit 3 coco nara's in there :O

Also in regards to the Lotus, does closed vents = more heat with it being contained and open vents = less heat since its escaping? Or is it, open vents = more heat because the coals are getting more oxygen? Never was really clear on this, which in turn has made me be unsure during seshes whether or not to open or close vents at times.

Is there a way to get the ash out of the lotus easily during a sesh when you switch up to fresh coals? or do you just leave it in there and push it out of the ways with fresh coals until you the sesh is over and its cooled off?

I sometimes find myself moving the coals around in the lotus because it hits kinda harsh sometimes, but I was under the impression that with the lotus you ought to be able to entirely control that with the vents, which makes me think I'm doing something a little bit wrong.

Sorry this is a really loaded comment, I just am still relatively inexperienced with hookah and want to make my seshes as efficient and pleasurable as i can lol. Might have more questions later Ill ask lol. Thanks y'all :)

I also usually smoke at home. I recently dropped 350 USD on the SBCarbine which is cool and looks like a storm trooper rifle. I also use this time to either play video games or turn on my ocean light and just listen to music and relax. If you have a room where you can just turn off all the lights and chill, I recommend getting https://www.amazon.com/Projector-Ohuhu-Changing-Undersea-Decoration/dp/B0716T17BV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1538290224&sr=8-1&keywords=ocean+light. It definitely makes for a nice relaxing atmosphere. Honestly, it's probably the best $20 I've ever spent lol.

I'm not sure about where to buy stuff online that will ship to Canada, but I can weigh in on the best way to light your coals.

I'm pretty sure you guys use the same power outlets as we do in the US. Is that right? If so, get yourself something like this. It gets natural coals going in about 10 minutes. Even if I'm out of nats and have to resort to quick lights, I still use my coil burner. I find that it helps to get rid of the nasty lighter fluid/gunpowder taste that improperly lit QLs can have.

That thread about lighting coals in a microwave did link to a YouTube video of someone doing it. I guess it's possible. I still wouldn't try. Especially with quick lights (the guy was using natural coals which aren't impregnated with gunpowder to assist with lighting), and especially when single coil burners are so cheap.

What kind of coals are you using, by the way?

u/Bossman1086 · 4 pointsr/hookah

Do yourself a favor and buy a box of coco nara coals. You'll never go back to quick lights. You'll need something to light them with, but you can get something fairly cheap at a drug store on here on Amazon. Just make sure they're fully lit (no dark/black spots) and flip them halfway through lighting. I promise you the difference is amazing.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

u/PvtWanker · 2 pointsr/hookah

While what others have said is true, I would recommend getting a Mya QT instead of the one you linked. I've used one similar to the one you linked and personally I don't like them. The QT however is probly the best tiny hookah I've used, especially for the price. Not quite as nice as a full size KM IMO but a great experience, and the build quality is way better and less prone to rust than the one you linked.

u/DaveWheeltalk · 2 pointsr/hookah

I keep my hookah in a hookah stand while it's set up.

https://www.amazon.com/Hookah-Protect-Breaking-Furniture-Accessories/dp/B019CW55JW

It works really well, and as an added bonus it turns any hookah into a rotator for when you have friends over. Sadly, I managed to break my base yesterday while I was cleaning it and it was obviously not in the stand, but it's always been super duper safe while still on the stand.

EDIT: also lighter or more flexible hoses.

u/momo88852 · 1 pointr/hookah

You need either to use your stove, or buy burner like the guys above mentioned. Plus where you live at? If USA that's expensive for coals xD but your name is Abd guessing middle eastern (or Arab)

Anyway look here on Amazon this burner is pretty sweet and I use it my self IMUSA USA GAU-80305 Electric Single Burner 1100-Watts, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005T0SN0K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_tkL6AbNSD6J8T

Haha save your fingers! I hope you were at least lighting quick lights with the lighter!

u/Jayc171 · 7 pointsr/hookah

For 5$ more you could get a MYA QT which is a decent starter hookah, change the hose to a washable one and you’ll be good till you can upgrade to something pricier.

u/borbosha · 1 pointr/hookah

You could get something like this. Easy to store and you can get the tanks for pretty cheap. Just make sure you get a strong mesh that won't melt from the heat to rest the coals on.

u/reznik_ · 1 pointr/hookah

Are they natural coals or quicklights? If they're natural, a coil burner like this would work perfectly well.

If they're quicklights, all you need is a lighter.

u/chucksosa · 7 pointsr/hookah

This one seems to be almost exactly the same one that we sell (just a lot cheaper). The slightly tighter coil works well to hold coals. Interestingly, Amazon suggested that I purchase Coco Nara coals and foil along with the burner, so I guess it is popular amongst hookah smokers. Or Amazon is just that great at recommending products that are appropriate for me, heh.

u/Justintime4hookah · 1 pointr/hookah

You could use the campfire, or you can use one of these too: http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-2000004124-PefectFlow-1-Burner-Stove/dp/B0009PUR5E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394047763&sr=8-1&keywords=coleman+single+burner

i have something very similar to that one, and its great, lights coals very fast, its small so it doesn't take up alot of space, and very easy to clean. i have had mine for around 2 years now

u/g0ldendomer · 2 pointsr/hookah

Like the title says, between my final semester of college, moving and starting a new job, I haven't had the time to give my KM a good cleaning. For those interested in the process, here goes:

I started by disassembling the entire thing. The coal tray, grommets and any other removable pieces got a bath in hot water and dish soap. The stem was scrubbed with a brush soaked in the soapy water, and left to soak for a few minutes. The soap worked to loosen any built up grease and other shit inside. If you've never done this, do it, its disgusting the stuff that comes out. After the good soak, I ran water down the stem and passed some paper towels through. If you've ever cleaned a gun, its basically the same thing. The base got a good soaking in plain old hot water and was scrubbed inside with a brush and wiped clean on the outside. I don't recommend the soap on the base as its a bitch to get out.

For the actual polishing, I used Eagle One Never Dull (http://amzn.com/B000CNBI1A). Lay down a towel, grab a wad and get to work. I like to rest the bottom of the stem on my foot and spin the whole stem while I hold the wadding to it. As you work, the wadding will turn gray as it removes the tarnishing. As it gets grayer or starts falling apart, just grab some more. Once you've hit the whole thing, repeat the process but with a dry microfiber towel. At this point, you're done, or you can continue repeating the process until you're satisfied! This stuff is fairly harsh, so don't use it in a poorly vented room and I recommend washing your hands thoroughly when you're done.

Enjoy!

Pretty much ONLY an electric coil burner. I use this one from amazon for $20. It works perfect and doesn't have an automatic shut-off like most.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SPRFZS/

u/sweetbeans2 · 1 pointr/hookah

Personally, i would recommend upgrading to coco naras. They're inexpensive ($8 for 108 of them) and most of /r/hookah seems to love them. I have personally used insta-lights and coco naras in the same night and there is a notable difference in the quality of the smoke, not just in the flavor but in the clouds as well. (Bonus: buying off smile.amazon.com instead of the normal amazon.com sends a portion of your purchase to a charity of your choosing).

Other than that, possibly a phunnel bowl and some tangiers, fumari or argelini shisha.

Also, there is a fairly detailed buyers guide here on /r/ hookah.

just need a long hose or connect multiple silicon hoses so that the delicious smoke can reach everyone

edit: also, you could make your own stand either from scratch or do some work on an end table or something of the sorts. just make a cutout for the hookah and some insert to hold it in place a little better if desired

Looks like it comes with essentials including tongs which I forgot to mention. I didn't see a grommet for the bowl or hose so make sure you grab some here.

I use Coco Nara flats, so this coil works very well. Heats up fast, and within five minutes, both sides of the coal are red hot after one "flip". The cord is a bit short and since it heats up so hot so fast, I set the burner outside when my friends and I sit inside and smoke.

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CFIKM2Q/?tag=hydsma-20&hvadid=50158611891&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8636694932600517108&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=m&ref=pd_sl_6wmx6kot0o_b

Perfect for cleaning any base, scrub every little spot with ease.

Sometimes if I'm at a friend's house and their base is nasty, I'll put a few small pebbles in there with some hot soapy water and shake, cleans it up real nice! Though I think I'm gonna give the salt a try next time.

This one is fantastic. It at most takes at most 10 minutes to heat up so you can prep everything while they're heating up.

If I am at home I use the electric range (Coco coals of course) but when We go camping I take alone a Coleman single burner such as...(http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-2000004124-PefectFlow-1-Burner-Stove/dp/B0009PUR5E)

Works great with some chicken wire around a square wood frame. I like it because I don't have to mind the coal constantly. Without the frame the coal can fall down by the burner and get it all dirty. Plus when your done, just remove the frame and you have a cooking stove.

u/PandaReich · 2 pointsr/hookah

I have one of these, it works really well. The one you linked should work as well.

I just recently bought a 1000W coil burner from Amazon because I was tired of my natural coconut coals taking so damn long on the stove. Lo and behold I was skeptical because I know those electric stoves can suck so I wasn't expecting much. Honestly, if you group these coals up close to each other, this coil gets so hot that that the coals sort of form a flame between each other that boosts its lighting time. All in all, the coil is fantastic and lights my coals up in no time. I set them up and in the time it lights I barely have time to clean my hookah and pack a bowl before the coals are done and ready to go.

Here is a link to the coil burner I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Toastess-THP-432-Electric-Single-Coil-Cooking/dp/B002SPRFZS

This is the one I use. It's cheap and very effective for coco naras.

u/WastedYears11 · 3 pointsr/hookah

I'd imagine this would help a lot. I use it to clean the inside of my boho after use. Never did me wrong yet.

u/ardilly · 1 pointr/hookah

Any old thing like this is fine.

This one is a lot cheaper, though.

u/FlaccidUnic0rn · 1 pointr/hookah

Something like this one?
Also I'm not too upset, I'm moving to a new apartment with an electric range stove VS the gas one I have right now. But I might consider an extra for parties/mobile.

u/AgentFlynn · 3 pointsr/hookah

I would personally rather use a single coil hotplate. It get's the job done quickly and is a hell of a lot cheaper to replace than a glass stove top, haha.

Sidenote: The "Frequently bought together" items for that hotplate makes me happy.

u/jimPTKFGS · 1 pointr/hookah

I have found them to be a lot better than the quick light coals. They last longer and can control the heat better. You don't have to worry about the nasty crap from the quick lights either. However you should invest in a single stove burner because they take awhile to light. [Something like this] (http://www.amazon.com/Continental-Electric-1100-Watt-Singler-Burner/dp/B002TOBFM2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1367959190&sr=8-2&keywords=single+stove+burner)

u/craznazn247 · 2 pointsr/hookah

Best polish product ever

Completely removes any stains and tarnishes, and leaves a sparkling shine with absolutely zero abrasion. This container has lasted me for over a year. Just rip a little off and rub away!

u/talldrseuss · 3 pointsr/hookah

To answer your question about natural coals (fellow apartment dweller here), i bought one of these guys and use it only for lighting natural coals. I just set it on top of the hot plate, and flip it after 5 minutes or so. Definitely takes a while, but, it's worth the longer lasting heat and the lack of chemical taste. Would highly advise you get one, usually very cheap in hardware stores and other places.

This is the one I use, I've never had any problem with it it lights up my coals just fine. It's the same one they sell on Hookah-shisha but at a discounted price.

What country are you in? If you're in the US, the plug-in coil burner units cost around $10-15 shipped: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005T0SN0K/

Amazon has same-day and next-day shipping for a few extra dollars if you can't wait a few days...

I accidentally bought one of these a while back as well. You need one with an actaul coil top. That one won't get near hot enough.

This is the one that I use and it works fine.

u/rubsitinyourface · 1 pointr/hookah

I use a scientific hot plate I got off amazon. Here. It will take longer than a blow torch but it gets the job done.

u/jkingaround · 1 pointr/hookah

it's a proctor silex 1000w single coil burner. if you can't find one locally:

Heba diffuser

108 coco naras

and now im trying to decide on what hose I want/works.

u/not_vulva · 1 pointr/hookah

Don't know about that one in particular, but I have this baby, and it's a fucking beast

u/Not_Plugged_In · 5 pointsr/hookah

I purchased this hot plate and its been doing me well. Plus its not breaking the bank at all.
Only fault is sides get hot so you cant move it bare hands midway through cooking but not an issue if you think about placement beforehand.

I bought this in 2012 and it's still chugging along:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TOBFM2/

There's no auto-off. After five years it's barely starting to give me some trouble heating up, but for $15 and five years, I can't complain.

u/zeshtorm · 2 pointsr/hookah

Here is the link.
I was wrong though, I thought it was $12 for 108, it's $14, putting them at about 1 cent more per coal.

This is the one I use. I use Titanium cubes and it lights the coal in about 10 mins. It probably has an auto shutoff as others have but I have never had it shut off on me as the coal were lit before then. I had one from walmart that wouldn't shut off but would take over 30 mins to light the coal and it was awful so I feel your pain. I will also mention that Fumari (I believe) makes an "official" coal lighter but I found this one by googling the same wattage as it had and this is about half the price and identical save for the logo on the front.
