Just a tip, but you also could try movies on Tubi.tv (free, but with some ads) and if you don't mind shelling out just a little money, Shudder is literally focused on horror movies and it's like $2.50/month (for 3 months, then it's $4.99 a month).

Possession (1981)

Coherence (on Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/Coherence-Emily-Foxler/dp/B00MFDZJAG )

Pet Semetary (the original one not the new one, on tubi)

The Witch (Netflix)

It Follows (free w/ ads through Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/Follows-Maika-Monroe/dp/B00VVXI6OM )

Frontier(s) (Tubi)

Rosemary's Baby (on hulu if you have that)

Frailty (on hulu)

The Babadook (on amazon but have to use free trial for IFC to watch it, if you do make sure you cancel it before it renews)

It's hard to recommend a lot of the great ones cause they sadly are either behind paywalls (Starz, Shudder, HBO, etc) or just not available to stream, like The Changeling, Session 9, The Ring (2002), etc.

Also I might also suggest The Haunting of Hill House series on netflix, it's great (though there are jump scares and things in it) and something she might enjoy.

That Taschen book on Horror Cinema is fantastic - lots of gorgeous photos. I love their film books...

If you haven't picked up John Landis' Monsters In The Movies, do so immediately. Great for browsing or reading straight through and tons of great photos that'll force you to make a massive list of films you need to see. A fun read too.

And Happy Birthday!

I totally recommend this collection. There’s a ton of great older movies, including my personal favorites The House On Haunted Hill (1958) & The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (1962)

Also recommend:

Black Sabbath (1964, super eerie)

King Dinosaur (1955, pretty hilarious sci-fi)

The Invisible Man (1933)

Black Christmas (1974, one of the first slasher films)

Night of The Demon (1957)

The Haunting (1963)

Burnt Offerings (1976)

London After Midnight (1927, hard to find, completed film doesn’t exist, but the remnants are worth the watch!)

Freaks (1932)

Honestly check out anything with Vincent Price, he’s in so many good older horror movies. I’ll probably add more to my list later today, older horror is my absolute favorite so I’m sure I’ll think of more!

Edit: for hard to find or just great movies generally: Diabolik DVD has a great selection!

I have the DVD box set of Guinea Pig that I'm considering selling. Alas, I did not know what the movie were about when I bought them 5+ years ago. I bought them because they were, for some strange reason, so hard to find on DC++ back then, and yet in such great demand. Then one day a couple of years back I decided to put one in my DVD player, strangely it was the first time that my now exgirlfriend visited my place. She likes Japanese stuff and they're Japanese movies, sooo.... My jaw dropped when the movie started. It was a little too violent and gory for me.
They're in excellent condition with just one of the discs having been played only twice. $123.45 is a fun number. Shipping cost will be determined later. If shipped within the US to an address UPS will deliver to, shipping is free.

Note: The second time was a few days ago shortly before I first posted this as a comment to another post. I wanted to see if it was the way I remembered it. It still was.

Something to remember is that it's ok if you don't like something that's "critically acclaimed". I recommend this book which would give you a lot to look into that you might find interesting. Also, just browse through Shudder or Prime Video and find something that sounds interesting to you without relying on what reviews say. Create your own opinion and you may find your favorite movie this way.

Every few years I get one of those big public domain DVD sets with a ton of old Hammer Horror, etc. movies on them and there's always at least a few movies I haven't seen or would love to own. This one is probably my favorite - there's an awesome blend of real classics and fun MST3k-style garbage (Beast of Yucca Flats!)

u/GradyHendrix · 57 pointsr/horror

It's great, way better than Netflix.

If you like giallo, it's got a ton of obscure treats:

Recently bought the Phantasm collectors box set. Not sure if this is world wide release or just European but it came with a replica Sphere with spikes (No stand - my only issue with this box set), a 152 page book with info on the films and photographs and each film comes in these good quality cardboard CD type cases with unique art work on the front of each. Also the box art it it comes in is awesome too. Here's a link

Used to be online in a kind of "blog" or journal format, but since been made into books (haven't really had a chance to read the sequels). If I had to guess, the author is either ex military or did a ton of research because he seems to know a lot about small arms and flying planes. Very detailed and methodical approach to surviving a zombie apocalypse. Loved every second of it!

I would love for you to message me when it's out.

As for books you should read, I would start with the three most commonly recomended books for writing. Believe me, these are gold printed on paper.

How To Write a Sentence

The Elements of Style

On Writing

and here's a great reference book: The Little, Brown Compact Handbook. Don't be turned off by the price, just search for a much cheaper older addition, it will have the same information.

The criterion collection has the best restoration of it by far. Barnes & Noble is currently having a 50% sale on all of their criterion movies so you can easily get for like $20. Night of the Living Dead (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077H8N7PP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Wd7iDbAQ2PZXY

The first 2 are pretty fun, been too long since I've seen the third and I'm not sure I ever actually watched the 4th. This set is really cheap if you want to see them again.

Penpal

It's super creepy, and the author actually posted on /r/nosleep before he made this into a book. I'd recommend getting the book though, because it's a smoother read.

Can I suggest to you, and anyone else, that it would be beneficial to read Stephen King's book 'On Writing'. If you click on the 'Look inside' sample pages, and scroll down to pages 285 and 286, it illustrates how to edit text with the notion that less is more.

Taking a piece of text from your line 10, as an example: "Maybe it's time we, became adults!" Due to her saying this to the boy it caused him to blush slightly.

Taking Stephen King's advice I'd imagine it would be more like:

"Maybe it's time we became adults!" she said.
He blushed.

Penpal was written by a Redditor based on some of his stories from /r/nosleep . It's good, check it out. I also recommend 77 Shadow Street by Dean Koontz.

u/immamoose · 1 pointr/horror

I really enjoyed The Monster Show by David J. Skal and Shock Value by Jason Zinoman. I've also heard good things about:

Men, Women, And Chainsaws by Carol J. Clover

Post 9/11 Horror in American Cinema by Kevin J. Wetmore Jr.

Nightmares in Red, White and Blue by Joseph Maddrey

Flower of Flesh and Blood is great, simply for the gags. He Never Dies is fucking hilarious. Mermaid in a Manhole could have been taken from an H.P. Lovecraft or Junji Ito story, it's strange and gross, the best kind. Devil Doctor Woman is pure cheese and I cant remember the other two. They are all available for purchase on Amazon US.

I'm working through Arrow Video's Phantasm blu-ray set so I'd be combining Phantasm 2 and 3 which seems a little silly.

So I'll go with Phantasm and Hereditary and use my best "back of the VHS box" copy instead. Ahem.

The Graham family are racked with two tragedies, the first when a beloved family member dies, the second, when their grave is dug up and defiled by the mysterious and murderous Tall Man! They'll need to solve the mystery of the golden orb to survive this tragedy, and with the Tall Man coming for them, their only hope may lie in the hands of a pair of drifters hot on the Tall Man's heels!

John Landis has a new Coffee Table book about monsters...Something like that? Monsters in the Movies

u/jedispyder · 2 pointsr/horror

Already hit up Walmart and Amazon, sadly I don't have a Costco account. I did score big time with Amazon having the Horror Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection for 66% off. I normally don't watch a lot of older horror movies but want to try that this year, so this will be a big help.

u/WangChi · 1 pointr/horror

Guinea Pig is a production company I believe, they have a box set of all their super fucked up films, here's the amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/The-Guinea-Pig-Box-Set/dp/B000679MJ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380779012&sr=8-1&keywords=guinea+pig+box+set

For anyone who hasn't pre-ordered yet, Amazon has the blu-ray for $18.31.

It was reading a chapter in Shock Value about Night of the Living Dead that made me think about it.

Movie Tropes

I'm in the same boat. I keep looking for scary books, but books just don't scary. That said, this one creeped me out quite a bit, and it's written by a redditor:
