There is a pretty large audiophile community that really obsesses over this stuff which is where I was able to find some answers.

I believe on the audiophile sites they explain the cord was modded for the show or something along those lines.

It's pretty cool finding radio forums that really get into the technology Howard has used over the years, he always seems to be on the cutting edge. Literally pages and pages of discussion on his equipment without one wig reference.

Thank you for your kind words. He was able to finish a book he was working on before he passed. His colleagues at the University of Tennessee were kind enough to give all book proceeds to his wife and daughter. It’s a collection of interviews and info of a Knoxville legend, Cas Walker.

She told a stranger, john popper, that she was Howard's secret girlfriend a year and a half before he publically separated from his wife which put his reputation at risk just so she could get special attention from a famous dude for a minute. That's a page from his bio talking about how she came up to him and told him on the letterman set. Superfans in this forum figured out when his letterman appearances were and deduced it had to be aug, 1998 at the latest. Here's the bio that came out in 2016

Though I have no idea if her team brought them for her or if the show's production team provided them for her. Seems like it might be a one-time use thing (as Arnold's earphones are different than hers) or both she and Arnold didn't want to use the standard studio headphones they use on the show and opted to bring their own earphones.
