I'm finding that having a routine is extremely helpful for letting the dog know when to be hype and when to be chill. We walk the same 2 mile path (almost) daily. And I don't use punishment, it always backfires. Instead I use encouragement to get him to behave. It's flipping hard though because he's so stubborn. I have an Aussie who reacts well to being told no, he doesn't take it personal, he just stops doing the negative thing. My husky is nothing like that, he gets an attitude and will throw a fit. So our walks are very special because I have to coax the husky to do what is needed, but I have to give the Aussie clear demands or he gets confused. We're doing well and they are 2.5 (Aussie) and 1.5 (husky).

Also, find toys that you can fill with apple chunks or other food. My dogs spent an hour digging apple chunks out of this while I prepared, ate, and cleaned up breakfast: Milk-Bone Active Biscuit Dispensing Ball, Interactive Dog Treat Dispensing Dog Toy, Small https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071NZN5LS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_v2jTDbEPK066R

I have dozens of similar toys to preoccupy them. Also, I can't say this enough but two is better than one for both Australian Shepherds and Siberian Huskies. if you don't have children who enjoy playing with the dogs or if you are not a very active person who likes to do hikes and that kind of thing (or weather makes it hard to be outside) I highly suggest getting another active dog as a friend for your dog. It does get rowdy, but they are active dogs that excel at rowdy.

We feed our husky Taste of the Wild, and she loves it. She didn't have any sensitivity to it and is always ready to eat her kibble. At 50 lbs, it is recommended by the brand and our vet to feed her three times a day.

Make sure you make time to give your new husky lots of exercise! We either take her on walks, or have her play with her puppy friends for an hour.

As for toys, I agree with the previous comments, toys that make noise are quickly dissected and destroyed. The toys with no stuffing are a good idea and if you're going to get tennis balls, make sure they have a rope through them. Long story short, we had a friend who's husky ate the tennis ball; not a pleasant vet visit.

You might want to consider getting your puppy a training collar; not a metal 'choking collar,' but a plastic like this one: http://www.amazon.com/StarMark-Training-Collar-Large-Blue/dp/B000A6BD5K They are meant to simulate an adult dog pinching their neck when they do something wrong. Our husky tends to go after deer on our evening walks, so having this training collar on her helps keep her in check.

Lastly, you might want to consider getting your dog a tracker for their collar. As you might know, husky's can be great escape artists and when they do manage to get out, they will go quite the distance. I'd recommend getting a Tagg (www.tagg.com). Even though we've done our best not to go off leash, she's managed to get away from us a couple times. This system helped us find her in less than 30 minutes.

I hope that helps!

Yeah no problem! Definitely do your research heh lots of info out there for sure about Huskies particularly. As for the dealing with the shedding, tbh the best way to "deal" with it is quite simply to maintain a regular brushing regiment for the dog. Also depending on the time of the year (big season changes mainly) and also weather/temperature conditions, Huskies usually blow their undercoat about twice a year but they do shed regularly! I brush my dog's coat about 2 to 3 times a week and that usually does the trick but like around summer time when they shed the most I brush about 4 times a week because that's how much she sheds Haha! Also husky coats vary from being really short to very fluffy, usually called "wooly" coats, so you have to take that into consideration too like for example my dog has a very lean build with a semi short coat (not as fluffy as the wooly coated Huskies) so when she sheds its usually pieces at a time but if I don't maintain her coat I will often times find tuffs of fur I can literally pull off of her hah. But yea that's the best way I feel to maintain their shedding and make sure to use the proper deshedding brushes/tools since their coats are unique considering they are double coated. I use a tool called the EZ Sleek brush and it works wonders since the brush is designed to lift up the fur from the undercoat and doesn't cut their fur like some brushes do (never shave a Huskies coat unless it's for medical reasons! It damages their overall coat). I recommend that one over the furminator, which is also a great tool to use but I've read mixed reviews and sentiments about it.

Great Toy My almost 2yr old husky loves this toy. Normally a plush toy lasts about 15 minutes this lasted about 5 days before the stuffing was pulled out but she still plays with it. Kong toys are great for chewers, but my pup only uses the kong when there are treats inside. Try new toys and see which your pup likes the most is going to be your best bet! Good luck!

Awesome!! I use this harness PetSafe https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071S2XZRW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share & clip leash to the chest loop. This helps guide my husky when they try to pull. I’ve tried the easy walk harness but I feel like that harness was really tight on their shoulder blades. This harness leaves a lot of space for her front legs to maneuver freely. You might have to try a few pending your husky’s frame.

These leashes have been great and good price BAAPET 2 Packs 5 FT Strong Dog... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R2JNDDV?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I'll put Miele's on a pedestal here as well. Got one for Christmas this year, our old Hoover Wintunnel ProPet thing could clean about ~20sq ft before I'd have to walk over to the garbage, empty the canister out (While getting dust/fur blowback in my face), walk back to the vacuum, start it back up, only to find out that the belt burnt itself out again on the combination of my girlfriends long hair and the two huskies (and two cats). Honestly, it was a nightmare to use.

New Miele can do about 2 rooms without even starting to break a sweat, and that was doing the initial "deep clean" of the house. Now that we've got it pretty cleaned up, I bet I could do the whole house 3-4 times before needing to replace a bag/filter. Haven't had a belt burn out yet, and clearing hair from the roller is a lot easier than on the old vacuum as well (Protip: Use a seam ripper (Edit: Better protip: just get a seam ripper blade for the utility knife you already probably have, like these ones)).

Will never look back.

To help with potty training, I would recommend getting a potty bell. You ring it every time you both go outside to potty at incremental times. Soon it'll be a signal for your dog to come running to go outside. If your dog is smart enough, they might learn to ring it themselves to get your attention.
https://www.amazon.com/Housetraining-Doorbells-Training-Housebreaking-Instructional/dp/B00T4XD0VK

I also recommend getting a clicker for training. You can start off by using the clicker every time you feed them to get them to associate it with treats. If you've managed to teach sit, then try to get them to sit and wait before each meal, try to incrementally push their patience. You can then replace the clicker with verbal signals like "good boy" or "go".

-Medically, you should try to administer a monthly flea protectant pill (ie. Nexgard) especially useful for an outdoor dog; and a monthly heartworm preventative pill (ie. Heartgard)
-Omega 3 supplements are also awesome for immune health and a shiny coat (I use ZestyPaws)
-Of course, make sure he has all 3 sets of puppy vaccines and rabies shot + tag to register to your county.

I have a 6 month husky, Juliette and I've been doing/researching all the new dog parent things and it can get a little overwhelming when you're trying to be the perfect parent. Some of this may be common sense but you'll get used to seeing how everyone has advice about Huskies🤔. Don't worry that he's not trained, 6 months is still a young, impressionable age to teach new things:)

...snrk....pppthhh......bwahahahahahahahaha! - Owner of 4.5 Huskies and a g-shep.

This comes with owning a husky.

As some others have mentioned get a robot vacuum, they are life savers when it comes to the fur, but you have to run them a couple of times a day. You may want to splurge on the new Roomba that self empties too - that'll be our next one when the current one gives up the ghost because you have to empty them pretty often and it's 99% fur. Frequent brushing can help as well, and we actually have a good groomers blower. That one is a bit overkill, but fur flies off them and it makes drying them after a bath super easy.

u/bistod · 2 pointsr/husky

9-12 months is when a lot of dogs can get a little out of hand, but it usually settles down after they grow up a bit. At that age, my husky liked chew stuff up, eat socks, and hump everything that sat still for more than a few seconds. After a couple months, it just stopped. So hold out hope that most of this behavior is just a phase.

In the mean time, definitely don't ever use the crate as punishment. I put my dogs in a spare bedroom when they are in trouble, so that their bed space and trouble space are in different parts of the house.

You could also try a different type of crate liner like this one: http://www.petsmart.com/dog/supplies-and-training/crates-gates-and-containment/mats-and-pads/kong-dog-crate-mat-18313.html?cgid=100087

or this one that has a "90-Day Chew Proof Guarantee":
https://www.amazon.com/K9-Ballistics-TUFF-Crate-Pad/dp/B00I8TAT10

I also keep a heavy blanket over the crate to make it more of an enclosed space. Your dog may respond well to being in a darker space when in the crate as it can sometimes make them feel safer and hopefully calm them down.

u/Stinky_nipple · 1 pointr/husky

Not sure what type of crate you have, but we had to get the [bolt lock](amazonbasics single-door folding metal dog crate - medium (36x23x25 inches) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QAVO29I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_8zrRAbS2GREVX) since ours figured out how to get out of the [lift door](midwest homes for pets ovation double door dog crate, 36-inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C1OREUW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_wCrRAbRRD3VNY) crate (even with a carabineer like yours).

Since we got the bolt lock no issues of escaping and ours are in the crate while at work. Even when I work from home they will crate themselves for naps and enjoy being in there. If you're worried about boredom you can drop in a rawhide/bone/toy to keep them busy. Our neighbors will leave the tv on for their pup since the noise and activity helps keep them calm. The bitter spray worked really well for our one sibe and luckily our other didn't need it.

Ultimately you'll have to figure out what works best for you and your sibe's personality

Hi! I got the harness from my mother in law but it is a Rabbitgoo No Pull Harness in a large! It's pretty nice! I think Bumi is about 45lbs (he's our lean boi) and there's still room for him to grow into it (he's 9mo). I like it a lot! I def recommend it.

u/OMGitsjessie · 1 pointr/husky

My husky puppy is ~5 months old, and she ruins every stuffed chew toy I can throw at her--she just loves tearing out the stuffing. The only two that have lasted a little over 2 months (and that is with confiscation of busted toys, followed by re-sewing and re-stuffing any tears in the fabric about once a week) are the ones that are manufactured to be tough for chewers. We like these two:

http://store.fluffandtuff.com/wally-mallard/
http://www.amazon.com/KONG-Shakers-Stuffed-Caterpillar-Dog/dp/B00H708PLC

She is terrible at fetch with tennis balls, but will fetch those toys most of the time. Also loves frozen peanut butter kongs, and bully sticks. Honestly right now, she's just playing with an empty gatorade bottle and it is the BEST THING EVER!

u/jkeiko · 3 pointsr/husky

Sure! It's made by ruffwear and it has a locking carabiner on the end. Our girly learned how to unclip her normal leash with her mouth and would take off running. The metal bit twists up so that the latch can't open anymore, unless of course it's twisted back down.

Ruffwear - Knot-a-Leash, Reflective Dog Leash with Secure Locking Carabiner, Blue Spring, Large https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R1UZLBA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DNw7yb2CZ0HWP

The harness she's wearing is an easy walker, which her leash clips to in the front of her chest, so it keeps her from pulling on the leash too much.

PetSafe Easy Walk Harness, Large, BLACK/SILVER for Dogs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009ZBKG4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_nTw7yb261F6HY

The harness is the best kind I can find for pulling. It distributes the pulling load properly on the dog's spine instead of wholely on the front shoulders.

The harness is actually made in Norway, but Amazon sells them so you should be able to get then anywhere. Pay special attention to the sizing instructions, they are not "one size fits all".

looked like a good one to get. I can't afford a furminator right now, but i need to get a grooming tool for my husky to help with keeping his hair from matting when he sheds a lot.
