Jesus, these people are fucking demoralizing.

If you're a chemistry major, then you are probably smart, you probably like the subject, and did pretty well in Gen Chem. The biggest problem with OChem is that there are so many different mechanism. Dozens of different types of reactions, with different catalysts, producing different products, with a variety of structural characteristics. You'll need to learn all the different structures of the reactants, products, intermediates, and track every single atom as it transitions through every step. It seems impossible to remember it all, which is why people hate it.

But you don't need to learn everything all at once. OChem, if nothing else, is the one class that teaches students how to properly study (and that it's impossible to learn all the material the night before the test).

Here is my advice:

Go to every single class. Take notes by hand (putting away the phone). Review said notes from the previous day for 30 minutes before bed. Do all the homework. Review said notes from the previous week for a couple hours each the weekend.

If you do those things, you will have learned the material five separate times before you even study for the exam for real. Once by hearing the prof, once by writing it down in your notebook, once by reviewing your notes later that night, once in the homework, and once in a weekly review. And if any of the material does not make sense after your weekend review session, go to the professor's office hours and ask.

If you do those things, in OChem and PChem, I guarantee you will do well in the class.

P.S. A molecular modelling kit can also be a very useful tool for visualizing organic structures and understanding the reactions.

For those of you who don’t know, this is a passage from A Confederacy of Dunces. Its protagonist, Ignatius J. Reilly is the original neckbeard. He is the perfect mix of /r/lewronggeneration, /r/justneckbeardthings, and /r/iamverysmart.

If you enjoy this subreddit, you will probably enjoy this book.

I have to say I get it. I tried to read listening to Yoyo Ma play Bach, and it was too distracting. I did once play a stringed instrument, so maybe I have an appreciation for the genre and what it takes to play well (as I do not.). But seriously, this song is amazing.

Or maybe it's just that iamverysmart and pretentious. (But seriously, the song is amazing.)

For a historical and theoretical overview that doesn't get too technical but is still comprehensive and fun to read, I highly recommend The Information by James Gleick. If you dig Zero, I think you'd dig this.

Being a millionaire isn't. Most people who are extraordinarily wealthy typically have average to slightly above average intellect. A large swath don't even complete college. This book does a pretty good job of exploring the idea. Here is another relatable article.

He has been reading books by Miles Cameron, and wants to be a hermeticist-type magic user of the books. The magic system in the books is based on a user's ability to create a "memory palace" and empower workings from within.

Goddammit. Every time I find a good series, some fucking douchenozzle has to come along and get their slime all over it. Now I feel dirty I'm on book 5, and am enjoying the pulpy fiction goodness.

Society still does that. It hasn't changed.

To anyone who is interested in learning more about how your physical appearance dramatically shapes all aspects of your life, I highly recommend checking out the book Looks: Why They Matter More Than You Ever Imagined. It's a great read.

This is from Frank Herbert's Dune series...

And if you haven't - read that shit right now. :D

The 1st book is required reading, the rest are varying levels of interesting. So yeah, buy online or checkout dune from your library and read it. Meet Leto, meet Paul, meet Jessica... meet The Baron. Have fun!

I'm a big supporter of that site. Really nice guy runs it.

Also, I just got this a few weeks ago. Great for sleeping and/or tinnitus.

Because it sounds so cool and modern, and now (sincerely) thanks to documentaries, every one has a vague idea that quantum seems to have all the answers about the Universe. Now that's a book, and even though it says "30 second", there will be some asterisk inside saying, "this is just a primer, here are the real details", or "look in these references for more".

But there are so many quacks out there appending quantum to every nonsense they want to sell, that the meaning of that word is made into a joke. Even some early pioneers of the subject in their later life gave into a little bit of mysticism and Eastern mythology, a part of the reason Quantum Mysticism prevails to this day, so there wasn't much time before every one else also ran away with wild ideas about the awesome "quantum".

I very clearly remember learning about this in a comm class freshman year of college.

http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Computer-Mediated-Communication-Functional/dp/0757598226

Chapter 7 covers this topic, 7 and 8 are all about relationships and interaction with others online. I don't have access to the textbook anymore but that's the best I can do

It already exists: The Thinker's Thesaurus: Sophisticated Alternatives to Common Words.

There was a thread about it on here not too long ago. Can't find it now. Anyway the book takes your normal intelligible English and shits out incomprehensible grandiloquent sesquipedaloquiaciousness. It's glorious.

u/Jadis4742 · 1 pointr/iamverysmart

Bolos! There's like eight books, some novels, some compilations, almost all of them awesome.

> supernatural romance for teen girls

Hey man, everyone can enjoy the work of Chuck Tingle.

u/itchytweed · 13 pointsr/iamverysmart

As it should be. Actors of violence shouldn't be given popularity, as it only succeeds in encouraging more like them (One thing I learned from The Gift of Fear)

u/kyndo · 1 pointr/iamverysmart

Why didn't you just ask me instead of being an asshole about it?

Einstein's quote is famous "Everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish by it's ability to climb a tree it will forever think it is stupid".

You should then buy this book

Then I think you should speak to a doctor about having that ginormous splinter removed from between your buttcheeks, it'll help.

u/Lisztian_ · 1 pointr/iamverysmart

That's only a very ignorant view of Liszt. Read Walker's definitive biography of Liszt. True, he could be flamboyant but there was MUCH more to him than Justin Bieber. He wrote essays on his visions for Art, taught piano masterclasses for free, supported dozens of struggling artists, and donated all of his concert earnings to charity. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Bieber had nothing close to that.
