I appreciate all the comments and ideas. They are all a bit above my pay grade however. But, I can learn. I am thinking of getting this 80 piece Particle Maker Kit from Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HZFS0PE?aaxitk=pneNT3rT3XhgMcS0LMxLmw&pd_rd_i=B01HZFS0PE&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=5582544217303223519&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_i=esp8266&hsa_cr_id=7664064650501#feature-bullets-btf
to get started learning about building IoT devices. It doesn’t say in the description that it is an ESP8266, but when I search that term, this comes up. I’m not sure if this will meet my original objective, but it sounds like fun. Any opinions or experiences with Particle?
As far as my original post - I failed to mention the track I was on that I thought was going to get me where I was going. I took a standard outdoor motion spot and covered the photocell so it always thought it was dark. I disconnected the parallel connection of motion sensor from the light. I was going to hook the motion detector in series to 1 channel on a 2 channel Sonoff, with that channel set to ON on power up with no output. When the motion detector closed the circuit and restored power to the Sonoff, I hoped that would trigger an IFTTT applet with the trigger ‘When Sonoff Channel 1 turns on’ and action ‘Send Notification’. Then connect the second channel to the light, power up state OFF on power up, and with a combination of IFTTT and Stringify, turn the light on only ‘if nighttime’ and off after 10 minute timer. As you can tell, I don’t want the light going on during the day. It’s a long story..
I really thought I had it figured out, but the Sonoff doesn’t seem to send a signal of Turned On after power up. All I really need is an IFTTT compatible device, (in place of Channel 1 on the Sonoff), that could trigger IFTTT on power up. Then I would have exactly what I want with a PIR that is meant to be outdoor. The only other possible flaw in that plan is the potential for false positives, etc. during daylight with a PIR that is designed for use in the dark. (As mentioned by @idetectanerd.)
Long post, and not sure if I explained it well. Thanks again for your input.
It was pretty easy. I have the D-Link motion sensor and the TP-Link Smart Bulbs.
On your phone/tablet, install the Kaza app for TP-Link and the mydlink Home app. I forget this step but basically add your devices to their apps and allow 3rd party usage. I wanna say I linked everything (including IFTTT) though my Google login.
Then, in IFTTT you search for "link" to find the dlink motion sensor and add that for motion detected. For the "that" look for tp-link and add their smart bulb and do a state change or whatever you want.
After that, configure how you like. Within the mydlink app I personally have it so the sensor turns on after 8 pm so that it only triggers the lights at night.
Been running the setup since December and the trigger time seems to be about 5 seconds or less consistently.
Is this the motion sensor you have? If so, I got one a couple of weeks ago and it works really well with IFTTT (triggers IFTTT pretty quickly)… when it works. Try just triggering a notification instead of your lights. That would at least tell you help you figure out whether the slow down is in the trigger or the action.
I have Phillips Hue lights and I haven’t seen any significant delays through either IFTTT or Stringify to get them turned on.
. IFTTT’s Smart Life stuff stopped working for me a few days ago and is now at least triggering again.

You'd need window and door sensors, like these, a hub to interpret (I recommend hass.io or SmartThings) and an IFTTT recipe to interact with your thermostat.
You'd be better off asking this question in /r/HomeAutomation.
So I am just starting out in this wonderful world Home Automation and have kind of an obscure idea, but don't quite know how to get this to work.
I just purchased a SmartThings Hub, a 240v switch, an Ecobee 4 thermostat, and some window contact sensors. I unfortunately don't have Central AC, but there is a rather large window unit upstairs that I want to turn on if the windows are closed and the the indoor temperature is above 74.
Is it possible to build an applet within the IFTTT Platform that will look at SmartThings to see if the windows are closed AND check the indoor temperature before turning on the 240v switch?
If I'm not asking in the correct place please point me to where I should be asking this. Any help is appreciated!
these are the best https://www.amazon.com/Bionaire-BW2300-N-Reversible-Airflow-Control/dp/B000065DKJ/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=window+temp+controlled+fan&qid=1573622378&sr=8-1
a Logitech Harmony Hub will do this in a single step.
"Firestick" would be a Harmony 'activity" that can be called by Alexa.
This doesn't help with your question but, if this thing goes on sale this week (Amazon Prime Days), then replace the MYQ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L5DPK8P
The idea that Chamberlain will charge to use something free like IFTTT is just ridiculous.

Samsung smartthings hub is on sale on amazon for a great price, and then you can get a GE zwave dimmer to go with it. Perhaps this is controversial to say in the IFTTT sub but i would add the switch to google home directly from the smartthings hub, which allows you to talk more naturally about your lights and avoids having to hard code a bunch of variations in IFTTT.
i have that built into the pad that mounts on the wall - it defaults to about a minute and beeps beforehand. I am out of the country or else I would send a picture of the keypad. very similar to the one in the middle of this main picture - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Chamberlain-1-1-4-HP-Equivalent-Ultra-Quiet-Belt-Drive-Smart-Garage-Door-Opener-with-Battery-Backup-B970/301951467?MERCH=REC-_-NavPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-301951467-_-N

edit - found it - this is what i have - https://www.amazon.ca/LiftMaster-888LM-828LM-Retrofit-Package/dp/B00IPKPVCE/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=myq&qid=1559023256&s=gateway&sr=8-11
If you have the solar charging bit worked out you can buy 12v to 5v converters (example https://www.amazon.com/SMAKN-Converter-Power-Supply-Module/dp/B00CXKBJI2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1501760134&sr=8-3&keywords=12v+to+5v+converter or theres lots of others). Otherwise you can buy the complete solar usb powerbank kind of thing. Be warned though- I bought one to power my Wemos project but the current drain from the Wemos is not sufficient to keep the powerbank activated so it runs for a minute or so then shuts off :-(
