Honestly, just buy the real thing. I love ikea and I love idea hacks. But if you want something super solid that won't tip and can handle two large kids (and sometimes 3), the original learning tower can't be beat.

Not ikea-specific, but a coat rack was one of the best things I had in my dorm (the dorm door was too fat/oddly shaped to fit over-door hooks on). I put my towels/robe on one side and coat/book bag on the other.
I agree with what someone else said about chairs for when your friends come over too. I had one nice chair and some of those little padded storage cubes (eg https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010UP71QU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_PWkoxbSZDHAPZ) to serve double duty.
I like the design, one suggestions why not switch over to the OLOV Leg just in case your floor or carpet is not level. I've had great luck with 6 of these legs making my desk rock solid.
 
Also I had used a similar shelf design to support my monitors but eventually went to a pole mount setup, The shelf limited the height of the items I could put under it and I really like having the open space

These are VERY strong and inexpensive as well.
If you want the dividers adjustable, use a bookshelf pin jig to make the holes.
If you want to use nice thin dividers, you could instead slot the top and bottom of the shelves using a router. This would work great, but comes with two big caveats: It will be more involved, and it will weaken the shelves quite a bit.
If your dividers are stiff they will overcome the latter to a large degree, but be sure to have at least one or two dividers per shelf depending on the weight on the shelves above it. If you are only storing light items, this is probably not even an issue.
To slot the shelves, you will need a router and a jig like this one (you can DIY a jig for less, search youtube for "router fluting jig" for ideas), and a bit sized appropriately for your desired slot width. It isn't a simple endeavor if you don't have woodworking skills, but it might look better, depending on the look you are trying to achieve.
took about a month, but it came together nicely. 4 Billy bookcases (plus 4 of the single-cubby extensions because I have 10 foot ceilings). add baseboard and shoe moulding, make vertical trim pieces between the bookshelves, add some vertical height, and crown moulding - just as classy as a true solid wood built-in!
for the picture lights, i actually bought some on amazon, disassembled them and cut them down to size with a hacksaw, and then mounted just the head part through the fascia board.

These!! I tried plain white stickers and plugs, but these are like very thin dots of melamine. I used them to cover up a few hundred holes and they look great!
I'm really happy with the monitor arm. It can be mounted with either a clamp or bolted with a thru hole, which is how I did it. It has an excellent range of motion, easy to instal, and has a channel for running cables.
