>If you could learn any Bahasa Daerah, what would it be and why? I'm learning Kawi for the poetry.

I'm part Javanese and I went to Yogya for university, so I speak and understand some Javanese. Enough to get by. Learning proper Javanese for understanding Wayang and classical poetry would be cool, but it's too tough for me. I'd focus on my Mandarin instead.

>What's are your favorite books, fic/non-fic on Indonesia in Indonesian/English/Spanish. I love Indonesian history, but moved to the U.S. before SMA, so everything since then has only been self study.

To start, I'd recommend Nusantara by Vlekke. It's not perfect, it's not complete, but it's a good start. Afterwards, perhaps you could read Indonesia, Etc. by Elisabeth Pisani to know modern-day Indonesia.

If you want to get historical, read The Indianised States of Southeast Asia by Coedes and A History of Java by Raffles. Those are very academic, so be warned.

>If YOU had carte blanche to write the most interesting book ever on Indonesian history, what's the title/subject and why?

I'd write about the pre-Islamic period and the interaction between the Indonesian kingdoms with the rest of Asian countries such as China and India. I feel like nobody knows much about this crucial period. Heck, we even had Majapahit ambassadors go to Japan and Korea ffs, yet nobody knows this.

>Can we be buddies? I'm on twitter and instagram and stuff.

Only on reddit. I want to remain anonymous.

if you don't mind sexual exploration, I suggest you to read Ayu Utami's work, Saman.

If you want something political, read Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk.

Tuan Direktur is a critical novel about materialism that I also suggest.

And Robohnya Surau Kami is a nice anthology of short stories by AA Navis.

Iblis Ngambek is a nice anthology published by Kompas.

Anak Bajang Menggiring Angin is also good novel :)

kalau mau tahu tentang intelijen indonesia, baca tulisannya Ken Conboy, INTEL: Inside Indonesia's Intelligence Service

Happy reading :D

edit: too many edit.

  1. The last time I needed to buy something, I bought it online. It was so cheap. 14" stainless steel food tongs for only Rp. 7000? Yes, please. You get what you pay though, the tongs were pretty thin, but more than enough for my needs. I've seen similar quality products for more than twice the price in physical stores. If I buy offline, I usually buy from ACE or from some stores in ITC Mangga Dua.

  2. House warming gifts, maybe. Weddings, no, we usually give money.

  3. Gifts for someone you know likes to cook, I suppose. I bought a Victorinox kitchen knife for my mom once haha.

  4. It really depends on the person.

Anyways, I'm still looking for a place that sells Bar Keepers Friend. If anyone here knows where to buy one, please let me know :D Cheers.

i dunno much about this kind of thing but probably this can help from what i just read

There is a risk that one of the borrower among you choose to default. It's not may be a good option because even if that X person choose to default and your team can simply use the money from his percentage of profit to pay his percentage of interest, it may not be enough (well you are the one who know the amount of money there). as its consequence, the debt goes up due to the unpaid interest, and everybody else have to pay extra money than they should have. and also it's so much troublesome (ridiculous amount of time and money) if you guys have to go to court to get the defaulter pay the money.

There is some possible way to make sure that everybody pay, it's just a lesson from a book i just read (poor's economics) but hey, probably it can work.

Have a weekly/biweekly/monthly meet up between you guys, this is what the microfinance company use to ensure the borrower to pay the money. so basically, if someone want to borrow money from microfinance moneylender, they have to borrow it as a group. and then they have to held some weekly meet up in the company group. there they make sure each other they all can pay the debt, using some kind of peer pressure (not in bad way ofc) and some peer-support to encourage each other. it's effective (at least in microfinance case) to lower the rate of default (only 4%, it's considered as very low and it' much better than other option). It's also a good way to push other to pay without having to resort to physical/court path (just what Loan shark and bank do)

this may be troublesome, but well, it's better than default option. you guys do need some protection from default.

http://www.amazon.com/Poor-Economics-Radical-Rethinking-Poverty/dp/1610390938 if you're interested. the microfinance part in the book. nice reading though

To OP, another excellent source is Pretext for Mass Murder by Roosa. It's quite well researched and gives balance to the claims of different political parties with respect to what happened.

How respectable is Orient as a brand? I've never heard of it lol. I found this whilst browsing for watches and it looks tidy, I'm kinda wondering if I should go for that instead or is there any other options that offer better value out there.

Hm, been addicted to English-translated Wuxia novel (Wuxia novel: novel silat. Think Return of Condor Heroes, To Liong To, etc.) lately. Not books per se, because it's not printed offline... Anyway, things that I've read lately:

Xun Qin Ji (A Step into the Past) by Huang Yi, translated into english in SPC forum: A 21st century spec-ops guy got transported into the Warring States period of China. Using his knowledge from the future, he tried to survive in this ancient period, while trying to put the future emperor Qin Shi Huangdi to the throne. Apparently this story was made into TV series, with Louis Khoo as the main actor.

Martial Odyssey: a fanfiction written by a member of the SPC forum, it reads like a complete Wuxia novel. Power-ups, love, betrayal, all the things you find in a Wuxia novel, really. Fun read.

Trafalgar Gambit, by Christopher Nuttall: Last book in Ark Royal trilogy. Space sci-fi, with space battles and stuffs.

The Saviour, the latest books in the General series from David Drake and co-author. I would classify this series as "humanity trying to return to spacefaring civilization, after a great catastrophic war that left them stuck in Gunpowder Age".

To-read list:

  • Patrick Rothfuss' The Slow Regard of Silent Things
  • Larry Correia's Monster Hunter Nemesis

Training == infer the parameters for the model, given the data. That's the learning bit basically. The idea isn't new, the stats people have been doing this for ages. It's just that in the recent two decades, computer science has somehow stumbled onto the same direction too after we realise that constructing AI by formal rules don't work well. Since you already know how to construct econometric models, you already have a headstart compared to most CS people who want to learn this stuff :P

One of the 'bible' in the field is Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, which can be quite dense for many people. I prefer this book: Machine Learning: A Probabilistic Perspective, which is much friendlier for self-study. You can also find both books online as PDF after some searching hehe. But really the best way is doing by practice. Grab some public data and just do stuff with them. Also join this sub /r/machinelearning and /r/dataisbeautiful.

Edit: grammar

so 5" (or max 6")

i have my hands on similar to blu-joy. it is quite good for non touch screen and big simple smartphone. not quite sure any model is sold here in indonesia.

so next possibility is using normal android smartphone and using costum launcher to help your dad (example here).

i suggest samsung galaxy s5 if you can add more budget (4.45 jt here). add good smartphone case and screen protector

Philips earphones are pretty good, but I forgot the name.

EDIT: Here's the link from Amazon.. Aku ketemunya di Hypermarket sih dan harganya kurang dari Rp200.000-an, tapi garansi kayaknya gak jamin. Sound quality is good though.

  • I just downloaded Dragon Ball Z movies, I have no idea why, but I decided to play in on the background. Why are there 3 movies about Broly? I've never watched or read the comics about Broly, kinda interested in knowing how he came to.

  • Dunno why I bought a pack of cigarette again, considering that I've quit smoking for more than 6 months.

  • Probably will continue coding again tonight, but I'm having hard time understanding the existing code out there about Bundle Adjustment.

  • Will probably sneak some Freedom Wars or Binding of Isaac in between breaks.

  • Also I just bought this wok-pan due to cyber monday sale. Around 40 percent off.

  • Will practice guitar again tonight.

    I'm a pretty boring guy.
