What kind of martial art do you do? Standing or ground? Insanity will definitely help with endurance. It won't be 1:1, but you'll see improvement. One other program you might be interested in looking into is the Bas Rutten Training CDs. I'm addicted to Insanity and am always looking for a workout that comes close in intensity, and these CDs are some of the few that accomplish that. You need a foundation in martial arts, this is an actual training program, but it sounds like you have that. In each CD (Boxing, Kickboxing and MMA) Bas calls out combos, and you throw them with 100% intensity. Boxing is just punches, kickboxing has a few kicks and you're also supposed to end each combo with a kick or knee, and MMA is the same as kickboxing except there's some ground exercises and burpees mixed in to simulate ground work. I'm addicted, and even when I'm doing Insanity I still make sure to do a Bas CD at least once per week. Each disc has a 30-minute workout of 10 2-minute rounds and 7 3-minute rounds, each with 1 minute in between. If you're looking to improve martial arts endurance, this is probably your best option, though I'd still recommend Max 30 in addition.

I've found that thicker exercise mats are better for two reasons: (1) they muffle noise better, which is because (2) they reduce more impact and save your knees a lot. There are several kinds of exercise mats, some that are yoga-mat thickness (which don't reduce impact as much, I didn't like mine for insanity at all because it just helps you grip the floor but not cushion jumps) and puzzle-mat thicker ones like this here that I've found help me a lot. I'm only 24 and fairly light (125lb female, 5'5") but my knees are awful so I've found those are the best for me.

I know a lot of people that do Insanity on carpet just fine (I have hardwood), so it's really what you're most comfortable with but especially for the noise factor I'd use something on the floor. :)

Hi! I've done Insanity a few times and I'm starting again after several years. In the past, I had a lot of joint pain with the program - knees and ankles, mostly. I was working out on my wood floors, and though they're better than concrete, these floor mats were absolutely necessary to my success with the program:

Anti-Fatigue Interlocking Flooring Set, 6 Counts https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012KUDPE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_VXPGwb5C1FW7X

They are thick enough to offset some of the impact of jumping, but not so thick that your balance is compromised. I highly recommend getting these! Save your joints! Good luck.

I just went through two H7 BTLE straps trying to get them to pair with my Android phone, which is listed on Polar's site as compatible. I tested the battery and it was fine, but neither strap would pair.

I just returned it to Amazon and bought this one > http://amzn.com/B007XCXOEC

I suppose if that one doesn't work I'll just give up and go back to a watch style setup. I'd really like the ability to track data with my phone.

Regardless of shoes, I recommend removing the flimsy insert that comes in shoes and replacing it with these: http://www.amazon.com/Sof-Sole-Orthotic-Performance-Insole/dp/B004VF5QJK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457979401&sr=8-1&keywords=Sof+Sole+insoles if you're a woman search for the woman's. I'm a woman, I do insanity barefoot, but I converted to a standing desk at work, and my feet were dying. Of all my running or athletic shoes, putting these in helped more than anything. I love them. They are pricey but worth it. I walk in place at my desk and couldn't imagine it without these!

Get an extra wide and extra long yoga mat - it will provide some cushion and grip on running, jumping and floor exercises. I have to do all my workouts outside on concrete as well.

I'd also recommend the adiPure Trainer shoes... they are light and the best athletic shoe I have ever owned.

Might I suggest this one? http://www.amazon.com/Polar-Heart-Monitor-Watch-Silver/dp/B001U0OFDC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381634129&sr=8-1&keywords=polar+ft7 I just purchased it myself and Polar is a great company for workout equipment. Plus it has a lot of really good reviews.

My journey so far is:

  • Power 90
  • Power 90 Master Series
  • P90X
  • Insanity
  • P90X/Insanity Hybrid

I moved into Asylum from there. My impressions after two weeks is that it's insanely hard. Jumping into the Asylum feels like the difference between month 1 and month 2 of Insanity, given how I came to it. BUT! It's a lot more fun. I never once forget that I am in the middle of an Insanity workout during an Insanity workout. But it never fails that I forget that I'm working out during an Asylum workout because I'm actually having fun.

Of all the workouts I've done, Asylum Vol. 1 is at once the hardest and most fun. Rock on.

This is the same as BeachBody's pull-up bar, and far cheaper. You'll want dumbbells, any kind will do; just go for lighter weights. I hurt my wrist recently doing the Strength routine, so be careful. The exercises are very crossfit, and you can hurt yourself if your core isn't in great shape.

    Rock on! Enjoy it. :)

I use the polar h7. Its bluetooth, and had a phone app, so i leave my phone in front of me (below the tv) and then can see my heart rate easily in real time.

I purchased this: HemingWeigh Extra Thick Foam Exercise Mat

I have wood laminate flooring, this has been a lifesaver. BUt you need to be barefoot or wearing just socks because it rips/scratches with shoes.

Edit: I just reread your post about it being constantly on the floor, my post wouldn't help you there oops! I'll keep it up though in case anyone else is interested.

A couple years ago I got "duped" into signing up as a coach, not to sell beachbody products, but to get discounts on them. I did the Shakeology thing for a few months, but decided to cancel. It tastes great and is dense nutritionally. It was way too expensive though. If you don't eat enough fruits/veggies and are looking for a recovery/meal replacement it's a decent, albeit expensive option. Now I eat like 70% paleo, stay away from dairy and wheat, and use Sun Warrior's protein powder with added chia and flax seeds. I've seen equal if not better benefits by doing this than when I was drinking Shakeology.

If it's just to do your workout on, you're probably better off getting a rubber mat from Walmart or a sporting goods store. Look for the kind that you put underneath a treadmill because they're at least 5x8. That'll catch a lot of your sweat and you won't be falling off it like if you were using a yoga mat. Plus they're really thin and can be rolled up and out of the way between workouts.

The main thing is not to get the foam mats or anti-fatigue mats at Home Depot. With all the explosive movements in Insanity, those options are an easy way to roll an ankle.

Small one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/21672521

Large: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003JMI2F6

If you think you may want to use weights (barbell/dumbbells), you may want to opt for a stall mat, available almost anywhere livestock feed is sold. Don't want to damage the floors.

u/DolphT · 2 pointsr/insanity

I haven't tried them, but the square36 mats have great reviews. They're expensive, but large, and unlike a yoga mat made for things like Insanity. My cheap yoga mat was too small and all over the place.

I wear five fingers and hop around on this mat: http://www.amazon.com/We-Sell-Mats-Interlocking-Anti-Fatigue/dp/B001EJPGG4/ref=sr_1_3?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1380733908&sr=1-3.

It slides around on the floor a little bit, but it's worth it so that I don't pound the ground so hard.

u/Run_NYC · 2 pointsr/insanity

I do Insanity on a carpeted floor, but it's a shitty carpet, so I don't mind roughing it up. That said, it doesn't do any damage to it. I would never attempt it w.o shoes...

If you're worried about ruining the carpet, you may need to invest in something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HJC0FSY/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_nAUBCbEJGYK4W
