Like everything, it depends. That looks like a just fine piece of hardware in general, but in your environment it just might not be cutting it.

To really know if its the right piece of gear or not you need to have some questions answered first:

  • Is your wifi signal strong or weak? You can use your smart phone and download an app called WiEye - it will tell you your signal strength in your given location.. You'll see your network name and then a minus (like "-73dbm") followed by a value. That's your signal strength. I'd say a good rule of thumb is 35 to 65 is just fine, 75 to 85 is alright, but you may see issues, 85 or more and I'd be surprised if you're NOT having problems.

  • Second thing is, what kind of environment are you in? Residential? Lots of other networks in the area(WiEye will show you how many are around)? How far away from your wireless router are you? What types of walls are in the middle? Any water (think fish tanks) inbetween you and it?

  • Third, this is a bit more advanced I'll try to keep this short, but there are two "bands": 2.4ghz and 5ghz. 2.4ghz is highly conjested in most areas and is highly susceptible to NON-wifi interference like microwaves, Bluetooth devices and cordless phones. Most home devices use the 2.4ghz, it does "go further" (300 feet in an open field) compared to 5ghz's 90feet...but in a home that's less an issue unless you're in a mansion. My advice is almost always to switch to 5ghz when possible! For that I'd recommend a 802.11ac router like this TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 and then a compatable wireless card if you're laptop doesn't have one like this D-Link Dual Band

That's quite a bit of info, but it only barely scratches the surface of what could be the issue and its solutions. If you'd like more advice, feel free to PM me anytime! Glad to help!

If you want to explore a little bit, I recommend stopping by us in /r/flashlight.

If you don't feel like going down the rabbit hole of spending thousands of dollars on lights and having to go to the rehab because of it, here are a few tips:

1) Fucking Nitecore Tube. The best everyday carry light you can ask for. Probably brighter than your multi-LED light (Always go for single LED, unless you buy a light for like $400).

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8z4ln2IaYw

Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/NiteCore-Keychain-Light-Pocket-Flashlight/dp/B00OZJ79R4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484735093&sr=8-1&keywords=nitecore+tube

2) Olight S1/S1R/S mini. These are the smallest flashlights that use a CR123 or RCR123 batteries. Now you are entering the world of big boy lights. The batteries are lithium based, the max output is around 500 lumes, and you can get them in various materials, like titanium, copper or stainless steel.

Video for the S1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KW_76H7NRk

Amazon for the S1: https://www.amazon.com/Olight-Baton-Lumen-Compact-Flashlight/dp/B013JEJBNK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1484735419&sr=8-3&keywords=olight+s1

PS: The S mini is more powerful and smaller than the S1, but also more expensive. The S1R can be charged by a USB cable.

3) ARMYTEK WIZARD PRO. Many consider this light as one of the best for normal use. It uses 18650 class batteries which are the most popular among quality flashlights (The same as the ecig vaporizers use). A cheaper variant would be Olight H1 nova, a more expensive variant would be a ZebraLight H600F MKII.

4) CHARGER! If you want to use any of these light just for everyday/hiking/emergency use (Not hobby). You will need just one charger. Either a Nitecore F1 if you don't want to charge your standard NiMh batteries. Or Nitecore i2, which charges almost anything, lol.

Nitecore F1: https://www.amazon.com/Bundle-Nitecore-Battery-Charger-Compatible/dp/B01FM9UQDE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484735901&sr=8-1&keywords=nitecore+F1

Nitecore i2: https://www.amazon.com/NiteCore-i2-V2014-Universal-Intelligent-Batteries-Compatible/dp/B009JMDD9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484735922&sr=8-1&keywords=nitecore+i2

5) Batteries. There are lots of manufacturers, but if you stick to the big ones like panasonic or sanyo, you are OK. Also brands that make lights like Nitecore, Olight, etc. are always a safe bet.

Happy light hunting!

It sort of depends really. They have specific needs, but they aren't too difficult to care for. I have a python water changer and it takes most work out of fishkeeping.

Once your tank is established (fishless cycling is the best way to do this) you only need to do a 20% water change weekly. I hook up the python, turn on the water (this creates a syphon/vacuum), then vacuum the gravel (using the python) while removing 20% of the water. Next you set the tap water temperature to the same as your tank. Put chlorine/chloramine remover into your tank, then you turn the end on the python, it makes the water go through the hose and into the tank. Once it's full, you shut it off and your all done.

It sounds kind of like a long process, but to clean and water change a 20 gallon tank, it takes about 3-5 minutes or less a week.

Really the key is to not overstock your tank and have good filtration. Good filtration makes for easy maintenance and happy healthy fish.

If you want a simple design that doesn't require cutting, the "hornet" is pretty well known and generally a great flyer.

You need The World Record Paper Airplane Book. That thing was yeaaaars of entertainment when I was about 8 years old. I believe I got it from a book fair at school, but I don't remember.

The Hornet will forever be my favorite. I built one of those out of some thicker construction paper with a few friends in middle school, and it flew for tens of miles. I launched it straight upward as hard as I could right near a blacktop on a windy day. We always flew over the blacktop because it offers great thermals (which we learned about from the book) and you could see some crazy stuff happen. On this particular day, it was enough to get the plane up somewhere around 100ft in the air. We stood there in disbelief as the plane climbed and climbed until it was eventually caught by the wind. It flew, perfectly stable, over the trees and out of our apartment complex. We all hopped on our bikes (as an '80s kid, we had bikes), and followed it as far as we could, but eventually had to stop as it flew over a large river.

I like to think it's still flying around Boston somewhere.

You can start out with a nice, budget keyboard like the magicforce 68 or tomoko 87. the magicforce has a weird name but it's a really neat 68 key layout and is available with Gateron switches which are arguably some of the best out there.

I would also recommend picking up a switch tester to see which switch type you like the best (red=light linear, brown=light tactile, blue=light clicky, black=heavy linear, clear=heavy tactile, green=heavy clicky).

Then you can surrender completely and shell out $500 on a korean custom with GMK hyperfuse and a cable nicer than most people's living rooms.

Yes! /r/arduino

I highly reccomend if you want to get into the world of programing to just go and purchase an Arduino uno for 20ish bucks. These little guys are cheap but extremely powerful. You can basicly hook anything you can dream of up to it and is designed to teach you how to program. The programing software is free and starts you out with beginer programs that slowly get more advanced. The first program "blink" has you insert a single LED, and then change the speed it flashes using the program.

I dont remember the syntax off hand but it looks like something as easy as:

LED State = 1; //Turns the led ON

Wait 500; //Waits x amount of milliseconds in this case 500 so 1/2 a second

LED STATE = 0; //Turns the led OFF

Wait 500; //Waits x amount of milliseconds in this case 500 so 1/2 a second

When i started with the blink program I had zero knowledge of programming. Withing a week I built a 3x3x3 LED cube. After another week my program would do different things with the led for about 10mins before restarting.

Now I just use them for silly ass projects liking making my beard glow when I DJ or go to dubstep raves.

This particular pen looks like a dip pen; check out your local art store or hunt around online. They start pretty cheap like this; you then put the nib into a holder, dip it in ink, and make a huge fucking mess everywhere. Then you keep practicing until you can make lovely calligraphy.

You can also get flexible fountain pens. /r/fountainpens for all the fountain pen advice you will every need. Non-flex fountain pens start very cheaply (I love the Jinhao 599 which is under $2 delivered from alixepress and a Platinum Preppry for super fine writing which was AU$7) with flex pens starting out a bit more expensive for a basic modern one and then a few more for a vintage flex nib or custom made flex nib.

Basically, you can choose the price point you want a pen for and there will be something in that range for you, though after a certain point you'd paying for cosmetic design and random diamonds being shoved in and exclusivity rather than a better pen.

I have a book that's nothing but these kinds of illustrations (I'm actually pretty certain this image is from the same book). Every one in it is the same case where the artist had never seen the animal and was working off a basic description.

I can't remember the name of it, but when I get home I'll find it and edit it in here if anyone is interested. It's a pretty entertaining book to flip through.

Edit: Not home yet, but I found the book in my Amazon history

Its surprising how what is basically just a cheap, tiny magnifying glass can help produce such remarkable pictures on a phone. I captured this image of a caterpillar that had water droplets on it with my iPhone 5 and a cheap macro lens.

EDIT: Here is the lens for those curious. It also comes with wide angle and fisheye.

u/PerspectiveDesigns · 5 pointsr/interestingasfuck

For those curious, this is a Pogonomyrmex Badius (Florida Harvester Ant, http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/urban/ants/harvester_ant.htm http://www.antweb.org/description.do?genus=pogonomyrmex&species=badius&rank=species&project=allantwebants) ant colony. The photograph is by Charles F. Badland. Walter Tschinkel made the cast and is standing next to it in the picture. You can find more pictures like these, and lots of awesome information about ants in the book The Superorganism by Bert Holldobler and Edward O. Wilson.

u/exxocet · 1 pointr/interestingasfuck

Yeah the superorganism idea is pretty cool, there is a must read book if you are interested in that kind of thing.

u/Regis_Fillbutt · 5 pointsr/interestingasfuck

I bought it from amazon, it was like $6. Kinda a crappy bottle opener but its great for shooting your buddy from the other side of the couch while he's looking at his phone.

Carlos Hathcock is one of the greatest American soldiers to ever put on a uniform. The man is a legend in all military circles.

I read the book about him, Marine Sniper, when I was a teenager and was completely blown away by it.

They need to make a movie about him, considering they don't have to embellish ANYTHING to make it nearly unbelievable.

u/skazito · 1 pointr/interestingasfuck

check out Amazon FR You can play darts with bottlecaps. Also, I want that beer poster now, preferably pocket friendly.

u/cigr · 368 pointsr/interestingasfuck

When I was a kid they sold this stuff as a toy in a little genie bottle. It was a lot of fun to play with.

You can apparently get it on amazon.

u/puphenstuff · 1 pointr/interestingasfuck

Thank you, I bought mine for $489, I think, cheaper than a Nikon DSLR with the standard lenses! Here it is on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B00U2W4JEY

u/lowpass · 1 pointr/interestingasfuck

It's nothing particularly fancy. Some nib (hard to tell because it's covered in ink but one possibility is a Zebra G Nib) and an oblique pen holder (his looks something like this but there are cheaper ones).

u/SomeRandomMax · 9 pointsr/interestingasfuck

Seriously. And in defense of those zoom pics, they have a fucking 83x OPTICAL zoom. That is an impressive technical achievement.

u/kevlore · 2 pointsr/interestingasfuck

I remember picking Marine Sniper about Hathcock for a book report in High School.

/u/Leftest is not exaggerating. It's an unbelievable story about a very honorable and humble Marine doing some completely insane things.
