Of course! :)

Here are a few of my favorite youtube channels that cover our universe.

These guys do a good job of giving excellent and creditable facts while keeping the video short and sweet.

https://www.youtube.com/user/scishowspace

This channel covers more than just space, but again they give good facts while still keeping the videos not too lengthy.

https://www.youtube.com/user/Kurzgesagt

And of course, nothing gets more credibility than the big guys themselves, NASA. These videos are a bit long, but are just loaded with a ton of real world space Q&A's.

The few magazines I have lying around my house right now are all related to space, and they are a great read for any of my guests! Heres a link for the planetary society (main source of my reading material)
http://planetary.org/

and here are a few books that every curious mind should take a good long glance at when it comes to our universe.

The main podcast I listen to is Star Talk with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. He has a plethora of different guests on at all times talking about new and fascinating topics. Here's a link for his show

And when it comes to articles, most of them come from Reddit! I am subscribed to a ton of different space related subreddits which post countless numbers of interesting articles all the time. Here is a small list just to name a few

r/space r/astronomy r/astrophysics r/astrophotography r/science r/spaceporn

I hope this helps!

I dunno, man. I guess I was giving my 2 cents on the next best thing from a "theater experience" aside from some of the users here that have home theater setups. I understand that not everyone can afford a good set of cans, but it's really a wise investment if you take care of them.

I'm not sure what the audio quality is like on digital releases, I bought the blu ray and ripped it keeping the 7.1 Master Audio and 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks.

[if you're curious, any 'ol SATA Blu-Ray reader is capable of ripping with MakeMKV - There's a free trial but afterwards it's $50, I've ripped well more than that amount in borrowed/rented/owned blu-rays so it's already paid for itself. No I will not upload anything i've ripped]

My brother has these and they're awesome

The ones I have

Compare them to the Sonys that all the sound engineers I know use and you'll get a better perspective

Hope this helps

Celestron 21035 70mm Travel Scope:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TI9Y2M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I probably could have spent more time researching one, but it had good reviews, travels easily, isn't too complicated to set up and it's a great price. I decided I'd rather start here and work my way up to something more advanced later on than buy one now that's too advanced for me and more expensive.

Plus it has 70mm in the name, and I saw Interstellar on IMAX 70mm so the Murphy in me told me it was fate. :)

I wish I had snippets of him talking about exactly that, but he seems to ramble for long periods around the subject. I can definitely point you in the direction of some Morrison rants regarding the 5th dimension.

http://smodcast.com/episodes/grant-morrison-bat-bard/

http://www.amazon.com/Invisibles-Book-One-Deluxe/dp/1401245021/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1416181375&sr=8-3&keywords=invisibles

http://www.amazon.com/Supergods-Vigilantes-Miraculous-Mutants-Smallville/dp/0812981383/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416181390&sr=8-1&keywords=supergods&pebp=1416181392529

The basic gist of Morrison and his writing is that he believes he was kidnapped (or just borrowed) by 5th Dimensional Beings after completing a mystical challenge in Kathmandu. He was shown our world from a 5th dimensional perspective. He compared it to watching black and white television... what seems real to us now is just a television show... in reality there is brightness and vividness beyond all comparison, but we have to collectively as a species be prepared to make the jump to get there.

In Supergods and the Fatman on Batman podcast, he goes in depth about his Kathmandu experience and how it shapes his thought processes. In Invisibles, that experience is put on paper in comic book form. It is the story of a group of "good guys" that realize from a 5th dimension perspective that there is no good and evil... It is all just a group of people trying to make the jump to hyperspace. From Invisibles: this is what a fourth dimensional being able to traverse time and space would see in people:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k72hbxx5F8M/T8fqJpSOEPI/AAAAAAAAAbE/2eXmfuEmzvs/s1600/invis012322.jpg

The trail is every instance of a person in their lives.

Little bit of a rant, but I find his writing amazing, and as hokey as his "experiences" sound, there is definitely part of me that believes that something happened.

This is an older system, but the speakers are absolutely great for the price. SLS is a pro-audio company that dabbled in consumer audio with Best Buy and made this system several years ago.

It's what I'd reccomend: http://www.amazon.com/SLS-Q-Line-Surround-Theater-System/dp/B000JZSYZO

Kip Thorne discussed this a little in The Science of Interstellar. All the effects of the wormhole and blackhole were rendered using scientifically accurate relativistic equations and the wormhole that's portrayed in the movie actually has a very short length to minimize the distortion and reflection of the light coming from the far side of the wormhole, Nolan wanted to avoid confusing the audience. The problem was that traveling through this wormhole was too quick and uninteresting, similar to the wormhole animation you mentioned.

They tried varying the parameters of the wormhole to make traveling through it more interesting, but weren't able to produce anything really fresh and interesting. Longer wormholes looked like a long tunnel whizzing past, which looked too much like things we've seen in movies before. In the end they went with a look that was influenced greatly by General Relativity, but made more abstract and with some artistic license.

You loved interstellar? Get to know the physics behind it. I would say, read Science of Interstellar by Kip Thorne himself who decided to bring a great movie based on science fiction in Hollywood and inspire Astronomy in people.

u/ArmyDude956 · 2 pointsr/interstellar

Here's some, I'm probably going to be getting the first one.

First one

Second one

Third one

Fourth one

Fifth one

Here's a frame that should fit them perfectly

As I said, I'm probably going to be getting the first one, since it shows the characters, the ship, and a beautiful shot of a sky full of stars. I love all the other ones though, and I might eventually end up getting multiple.

u/Theopholus · 2 pointsr/interstellar

Consider this. We can move anywhere in the three dimensions. We are three dimensional creatures, which are restrained in the 4th dimension. We can move forward and backward, up and down, provided the technology we can physically go anywhere in the 3D universe. But we can't do that with time.

Time isn't not real, it's just not well understood. It's a singular direction.

Another helpful way of thinking is, ironically, in black holes. Most people think that a black hole is a strong gravitational thing that is so strong that light can't escape. But that's just a layman's explanation. In fact, a black hole is spacetime that is warped so much that there is only one direction to go - inward. Well, much like a light beam in a black hole, time only goes one direction for us. Heck, new research seems to think we could be living inside a black hole!

Check out a couple resources: The youtube channel PBS Spacetime. Also, Kip Thorne's The Science of Interstellar if you're interested in knowing more.

Interstellar (Blu-ray / DVD) (Collectible Gift Set) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DP6YWVK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_97C1DbNYHQ6ED

Bought it myself a few weeks ago. Everything came out great. It even came with an actual IMAX film cell. (I got a frame of Matt Damon on Mann's planet, pretty cool stuff)

The kip thorne novel is rather interesting to read through. You might require a bit of a background in physics for it to be interesting. The math is left out but having a few college courses will help with understanding the basic underlying concepts. Throne touches on when artistic license was used and lists plenty of further reading if you become interested.

More things make sense than you'd first believe. I've been reading Kip Thorne's book The Science of Interstellar and it's really great at breaking down the events and science in the movie, explaining what is absolutely true, what is more speculation based on true science etc.

u/PrancingPeach · 2 pointsr/interstellar

I can't really answer that. The movie might just be inconsistent with itself or Nolan may have departed from what Thorne intended in showing that scene. The handshake always felt like an extreme stretch to me anyway.

It's pretty clear what Thorne had intended, though, from his book. Cooper is scooped out of the black hole into "the bulk" (hyperspace) by the tesseract. See page 255 or so. The Amazon link looks like it has some of these pages available for viewing:

OP here. I said sci fi writer to clarify that I'm not an authority. I spent two years of my free time reading up on the subject before writing my first book, so while I'm not an authority I do have creative perspective that I wanted to share.

Sorry if that was confusing. Kip Thorne, the physicist who helped make the movie, is an actual authority and he actually wrote a book, "The Science of Interstellar", which I haven't read but is apparently really good.

It is from the book "The Science of Interstellar" written by Kip Thorne, who is the scientific consultant and executive producer of the movie.

Interstellar – Building A Black Hole

It is a good book and it goes well with the movie if you are interested in the physics and smaller details of Interstellar.

Any chance you could link the bundle you’re talking about? Only thing I can find on amazon is this:

https://www.amazon.com/Interstellar-Blu-ray-Ellen-Burstyn/dp/B0767FCYDW

But that link doesn’t specify anywhere that it’s in 4K, so I’m hesitant to order.

Thanks!

i love reading these "rants".. such an epic film. still recovering from seeing it.

"There needs to be a book that expands on this universe because I can't get enough."

go buy Kip Thornes "the science of interstellar"

You should also pick up the Future of Spacetime. It's a wonderful collection of essays from the likes of Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne. As for the no science background thing, I'm in high school and still managed to understand it in its entirety.

u/Stef100111 · 1 pointr/interstellar

He has a chapter devoted to the basics of the science gone over in the book, I wouldn't worry. Take a look at the table of contents by using the "Look inside" feature Amazon has. Link to book here.

Thanks for informing us. Where do we buy this? Obviously it's easy to just re-order the mp3's, but I'm trying at least have all 24 of these songs.

Edit: Is this the best I can do? If so, I'm going to buy this one. Thanks for the pointers!

Dude, I think you need to see the film again, or read Kip Thorne's accompanying book (an excellent read). None of the explanation you posted is required for the physics they used to present the film.

u/hackiavelli · 12 pointsr/interstellar

Three times. I'd like to pretend I'm smart enough to have memorized the dialog that well but I really just looked it up in the novelization.

Came here to say this. We do actually know shit about the science of interstellar travel, and it's all in The Science of Interstellar.
