If you want to get fancy they sell Muslin Bags on Amazon.
These were perfect for Kava Kava and Kratom tea.

Only with micronized kava. And not capsules...

Use these, and thank me later. Far better alternative to stuffing dozens of capsules: https://www.amazon.com/Oblate-Discs-Japanese-Edible-200pcs/dp/B000FQOFLE

They are all natural, and made completely out of tapioca starch.

Here's how to use them (skip to 0:10): https://youtu.be/90Vyxil7WBw

Cheers!

Buy real kava from a vendor here. The Savusavu waka from KavaTime has been getting rave reviews and it's mild taste makes it a good beginner kava.

For prep, you will need either:

A bag for kneading/straining... something like this will do the job.

Or:

The aluball

Whichever you choose, watch a few videos online to see how to use those tools to properly prepare kava. If you don't extract the kava well enough, you'll not feel the effects you desire.

On my phone, sorry if the link is wonky. But it's prime!

My sweet spot is 15 caps. Don't expect to get a buzz like kratom, I would consider kratom a high but kava is just a mellow well being. Also kratom can cause liver issues, so be careful.

can i use regular tea bags like this to strain the kava in? i'm interested in making an herbal mixture in tea bags like this.

Did you buy it as is or in a bag? It looks a lot like this kava product https://www.amazon.com/Kava-Extract-Powder-Kavalactones-NON-GMO/dp/B018K0SDKU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1535768484&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=kava+extract&psc=1, which I’ve tried. If it is the same product, it worked really well and I didn’t have any bad side effects from taking the extract. Usually I would put it in the blender with a little milk and ice cream, which made it easy to consume. You can also just stir it in some milk

It's something you can get at any Asian market and many grocery stores, but here is an example https://www.amazon.com/Chao-Thai-Coconut-Powder-Large/dp/B008BFYXDG

Really no reason why canned wouldn't work as well. I do a lot of Thai cooking and I like the powder because the flavor is a little more concentrated :)

A few recommendations:

  1. Double strain, i.e., put your prepared kava through another strainer bag (doubled up if need be)

  2. Get a finer filter bag, such as a 10 Micron Size bag

  3. Chase your kava with lots of ginger tea. Throw 3-4oz of coarsely chopped fresh ginger in a pot with 3 cups water and simmer for 20 minutes. Add honey and drink during your kava session.

  4. Take some high quality probiotics. This will help break down the resistant starch in the Kava which is likely the major culprit.

  5. Get a strain that is low in both DHK (Chemotype Number: 2) and DHM (Chemotype Number: 5), such as Mo'i from Gourmet Hawaiin Kava. These two constituents tend to be more correlated with nausea. See more about Chemotypes here.

no, never had a problem. I always use a medium grind Kava though, maybe you are using a finder grind or your blender is more powerful than mine?

I use these types of strainer bags

I’m relatively new to kava but this type is supposed to be the more heavy variety. https://www.amazon.com/Borongoru-Vanuatu-Kava-Root-Kava-Kava/dp/B00PA1QDGE

For what it’s worth if you’re dead set on doing a benzo withdrawal at home instead of medically you might want to have alcohol on hand in case things get dicey. I’m sure you know benzo withdrawal can cause seizures and sometimes a beer taper can be needed for at home detoxing. I’m a recovering alcoholic myself and had to do the reverse and use klonopin to come off alcohol to stave off the delirium tremens.

I’m not sure kava will necessarily get rid of gaba withdrawal symptoms but it might knock them back slightly. Also I would highly suggest against caffeine during withdrawal as it may lower the convulsive threshold.

Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Kava-250-120-Capsules/dp/B0013OSNA6/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=kava+kava+capsules&qid=1558892680&s=gateway&sprefix=kava+&sr=8-5
Btw it says 250 mg but that means 250 mg of the kava extract which is composed of 30% kavalactones. And 30% of 250 is 75, so there is 75 mg of kavalactones per capsule.

The only label I can see online is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Kava-King-Vanuatu-Blend/dp/B00A7ANUKU This is supposed to be their unflavoured product, which I assumed is the "pure" one. As per label it contains fillers. I cannot remember if I've tried the lateral root one and I cannot find any pics of the list of ingredients online. In any it's no longer available, apparently.

I dont recommending t&w with kava... but you can use oblate discs, which keeps you from getting the powder everywhere.

Oblate Discs - Japanese Edible Film, 200pcs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FQOFLE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_OU4-BbFBXA6H0

Edit: if you're going to go this route do so only with micronized kava bc regular grind kava will be horrible on your stomach. Thanks for the response, I feel bad giving terrible advice!
