So depending on what you're looking for I'll make some suggestions within/around your range.

Redragon K552W: https://www.amazon.com/Redragon-K552W-Mechanical-Keyboard-Equivalent/dp/B07D3FJW3S/ref=pd_sbs_147_10?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07D3FJW3S&pd_rd_r=a93b2b07-fcf4-43ec-86c5-c474bb362350&pd_rd_w=Atdgs&pd_rd_wg=5OGnu&pf_rd_p=1c11b7ff-9ffb-4ba6-8036-be1b0afa79bb&pf_rd_r=YQ8TT3G39M0JDPQBXNPD&psc=1&refRID=YQ8TT3G39M0JDPQBXNPD
One of my go to keyboard suggestions for anyone looking to get into mechanicals or for people on a tight budget.
I stand by this board period. It has Outemu Blues which are clickier than Cherry MX Blues but more tactile. Solid choice, if lighting doesn't matter to you there's also a black model, LED free mode, & a full size.

MagicForce Qisan: https://www.amazon.com/Qisan-Mechanical-Keyboard-GATERON-Magicforce/dp/B01E57PXKA
Probably one of my favorite Gateron Red switch boards for its price. There are some sacrifices made though, you're getting exposed switches, this shouldn't matter as long as you're not a messy person however.
If you want a smooth switch that's not going to be terribly loud and clicky I do suggest this. Gateron Reds have to be my favorite out of all of the red switches I've tried, they're just smooth and provide a nice typing experience.

iKBC CD87: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BNX56H1/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzNzBUWkEyQ0hEMk5YJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzgxNTk5MzMxRzA2MDROQVA2RSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMDQxNjIzUlNXVjUyWFhJVjNTJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsMiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
If you don't mind spending a little extra here's one of my personal favorite boards that comes in several different switches all being authentic Cherry's.
Very desk space friendly, nice design, & portable if that's important to you.
This board is versatile, it takes any keycaps thrown at it and just feel comfortable to type on, if you wanna go a little bit premium and have a nice keyboard I'd suggest this for sure.

Motospeed 61 RGB: https://www.amazon.com/MOTOSPEED-Portable-Mechanical-Keyboard-Backlit/dp/B07HH8ZTDD/ref=sr_1_5?crid=3LXKO6G1Z5EQQ&keywords=kailh+white+switch+keyboard&qid=1566725961&s=gateway&sprefix=kailh+white%2Caps%2C164&sr=8-5#customerReviews
You did mention that illuminating lights is one thing you'd like, this is my last suggestion and definitely something different if you're new to mechanicals as this isn't a board I'd normally suggest to anyone new.
Motospeed 61 uses Kailh BOX White switches, it's a switch that's more comparable to the Cherry MX Blue so it's a tactile switch.
I'd argue that they're not near as loud but provide the tactile click that some people prefer but I find these to be a better switch for gaming in my opinion.

These are some of the suggestions I can make within your search range that I find to be worth for the price.
Hopefully this will help you make a decision!

in terms of brand reputation, filco is highly recommended by many keyboard enthusiasts. the TKL version and the one with TK both are cherry mx browns, excellent build quality, but also a bit pricey. The Filcos also come in a style where the the key lettering is printed on the front of the keys instead of the top (TK/TKL).

Another brand that has solid build quality is leopold. simple design, build quality that rivals the filco, mx browns and a removable USB cable.

another popular brand on reddit and in general are the das keyboards. Also not backlit, but like the filco, the build quality's great, though some people don't care for the glossy finish (looks great, but attracts fingerprints like crazy).

if backlighting is important to you, the razer blackwidow has features more suited towards gamers (macro keys, backlighting, earphone/mic jacks, usb port) though the build quality would be arguably better on the first 3.

u/blackice4 · 1 pointr/keyboards

Do you like linear switches? For the most common switches the noise level goes from softest to loudest. Black, red, brown, then blue. Im not a keyboard expert but I know Tesoro is a pretty good budgetish keyboard option

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074C9QKXH/ref=twister_B07BTD11KM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. Its about $100

Corsair has some special edition white keyboards. https://www.amazon.com/CORSAIR-Mechanical-RAPIDFIRE-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B07D5S24BP/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1542083689&sr=8-7&keywords=white+mechanical+keyboard&dpID=41hmy8JQAlL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch. $175

And so does Razer, however they are the loud switches: https://www.amazon.com/Razer-BlackWidow-Chroma-Construction-Keystrokes/dp/B072JWR7Y5/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1542083689&sr=8-5&keywords=white+mechanical+keyboard $150.

Off the top of my head, thats what i can think of. There are also a lot of other cheap like $30-$50 white mechanical keyboards.

I dont really know a whole lot about the custom keyboard realm. But those keyboards are super nice. However they can get expensive.

u/GoingIntoOverdrive · 3 pointsr/keyboards

I've had a look at the devastator combo and it definitely looks interesting at that pricepoint. However, I would offer the following:

  1. What do you want from your keyboard? Do you want to improve your typing experience or looking to enhance your gaming? Either way, shelling out more money will get you better ergonomics (reduced strain, increased longevity, etc.) and in most cases a big increase in how long a board can stay with you.
  2. Have you considered mechanical switches? I switched a little while back and now I can't imagine buying rubber dome again. It's not because of elitism, it's simply a better experience for me all round and I now live in the knowledge that the board I have will be with me for some time.

There are some really decent boards at reasonable pricepoints scattered all about. The immediate ones that come to mind are:

  3. Corsair K65
  4. CM Storm Quickfire Rapid
  5. Rosewill RK-6000

Granted, these are above the pricepoint mentioned for the devastator but if you're willing, the ergonomics and quality of these boards should vastly outweigh it.

As mentioned, have a look at /r/mechanicalkeyboards once you have a feel for what you want in a keyboard. If you spend significant amount of time behind a computer in the first place (gaming + work can easily soak up dozens of hours a week) then investing in quality kit seems like a good idea.

If you think the Devastator set looks awesome and fits your needs, by all means go for it. Be sure to post pics and your experience when you get it!

EDIT: For reference, have a quick look at the reviews being posted on Amazon. Though not the most reputable source, they do seem to highlight a number of concerns for this combo with build quality and polish. Most notably the fact that the scroll lock key is used to turn the LEDs on and off on the keyboard but simultaneously also turns that function on. This may be a problem if you use programs that respond to that key being on. In addition, it appears that a) the keys are not particularly well-finished and may have some chips in them and b) when the LEDs are off you can't see the writing on the keys. Not a problem if you're a touch typist but if you tend to look at the board while typing you may have issues.

The Cooler Master Quickfire TK is a great backlit option for less than $100, although it doesn't have macros if you care about that kind of thing.

The keyboard is available in a variety of different mechanical switches, so it might be a bit daunting trying to figure out which one suits you best.

Personally, I find the RED switch perfect for first person shooters, as it's very light (seriously, it requires very little force to press down compared to most membrane switches). It's also not tactile, which means that you can't feel a bump when you press it down. Another thing to note is that, like most other mechanical switches, it actuates before you press it all the way down.

The downside is that you might have some trouble typing with it, as the light weight could cause you to mistype. You also might not be sure if you pressed a key down enough for it to be actuated, as there's no bump or click sound to confirm it. Of course, this is something that I have gotten used to over about a week or so, but it can be very strange at first.

Here is a great overview of the other switches.

I can certainly say that mechanical keyboards have improved my typing, but I'm not so sure about gaming. To me, mechanical keyboards are more about comfort. The solid build quality, precision and consistency of the switches just feels more natural to me, which is enough for me to justify spending $150+ on a keyboard, but that might not be true for other people.

EDIT: Spelling.

Yep, old school Microsoft Natural Keyboard. That generation came in three flavors - The Natural Keyboard, the Natural Keyboard Pro, and the Natural Keyboard Elite. The only difference between the models was that the one you've got is like the base model. The Pro added a row of media keys above the function keys as well as a passive two-port USB hub in the back. The Elite model had no media keys and squashed the mid-block of keys to a two-column, three-row, configuration in order to save an inch or two of space.

The current iteration of this keyboard is the Microsoft Surface Ergonomic Keyboard. You can still find the Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard and Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 pretty easily. The newer / flatter keyboards have gone to a chiclet / scissor switch / laptop style key, while the 4000 and older are the more classic stem-based rubber domes.

u/_Panda · 5 pointsr/keyboards

"Gaming keyboards" are generally just mediocre quality keyboards dressed up with pretty lights and some extra buttons. None of them are really any good.

If you want a great keyboard, look at filco. My current keyboard is a filco majestouch-2 ninja tenkeyless with brown keys, though it unfortunately seems to be out of stock on amazon right now. There are still a lot of filcos in stock on Amazon though, and if you're willing to shell out the cash I highly recommend taking a look at the best keyboard I've ever used.

For cheaper high-quality keyboards you can take a look at leopolds or Coolermasters. If you have to have backlighting, the best options are the soon-to-be-released ducky shine 2 or the ducky year of the dragon edition.

Also, if you want a good mechanical keyboard, you should take a look into the different switch types. The common ones are blues (loud and very tactile), browns (quieter and tactile), reds (linear, so no tactile bump), and blacks (same as reds but stiffer). The standard recommendation is blues for pure typists and people who love loud clicks, browns as a good middle-ground and softer, and blacks/reds for FPS/some other games that use a lot of double tapping.

u/RyanPax707 · 1 pointr/keyboards

Ok, I'm going to go with the RED's and see if I can avoid bottoming out. Amazon has the easiest return policy so I can test one out from there and fall back on the Brown's if need be. But I could use some feedback on the brands I've found. There is one by HyperX Alloy, Corsair, and Cool Master, which I'm leaning towards:

HyperX Alloy:
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B074F5L8GQ/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I3019CKXYTT217&colid=2SP7WUOPZKFVJ&psc=0

Corsair:
https://www.amazon.ca/Corsair-Gaming-Mechanical-Keyboard-Cherry/dp/B06XC1WNPT/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1518336343&sr=1-6&keywords=cherry%2Bmx%2Bred%2Bkeyboard&th=1

Cooler Master
https://www.amazon.ca/MasterKeys-Tenkeyless-Mechanical-Keyboard-Switches/dp/B072JBFJB4/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1518336343&sr=1-8&keywords=cherry+mx+red+keyboard

All three are billed as gaming keyboards but I'm mainly trying them out for typing. The Cool Master doesn't look very fancy but I don't need the lights and it says I can switch the keys around for Dorvak and Workman layouts for making typing even easier (I'm just learning about this now). Unless those other two are supposed to be way better?

I know the switch itself should be the same across boadrs but these 'PBT' keys on the Cool Master, the thicker keys, that doesn't affect force required? A review of a CoolMaster said "PBT keycaps feel a lot more substantial than ABS keycaps, and Cooler Master has made them feel even more solid by making them 1.5mm thick." I'm just wondering if by 'more' substantial he means a bit heavier to press down or not. If so I'll go with the HyperX Alloy.

Anyone have any experience with these?

u/spectre256 · 1 pointr/keyboards

I personally prefer the Ninja Tenkeyless, but if you want a fullsize 104 keyboard then that's a good choice. It's tenkeyless but everything else is the same. The front printed keys give the both an absolutely awesome feel and look. I actually previously owned a Das, and after buying a Filco I returned my Das: the quality is that much better (the Das is not bad in any way, but the Filco is just that awesome).

As for the USB-PS2 adapter any of the little purple guys that look like this will work. There's nothing special about them for filco or Das as far as I know. Definitely use the PS2 port if your computer has one.

u/Roshambo-RunnerUp · 2 pointsr/keyboards

A full keyboard (with number pad) is what I'm looking for primarily. That being said, if an exceptional alternative was available that did not have the number pad, I would consider it. It cannot exceed 18.5" wide because it must fit on a keyboard tray with room for the mouse.

I want uniform, single color illumination. Like how the Logitech k800 has. If a keyboard only has rainbow backlit keys, then it's out.

  1. Logitech option (with mouse):

    https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Performance-Premium-Backlit-Keyboard/dp/B07C6JCFY5/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=k800+logitech+wireless+keyboard&qid=1569902056&s=gateway&sprefix=K8&sr=8-5

If I go with Logitech, which is my top choice right now, I'm going to get A logitech mouse too, so I can free up a USB port on the PC.

There is a Corsair k68 that seemed like a possibility:

    https://www.amazon.com/CORSAIR-Mechanical-Keyboard-Backlit-Resistant/dp/B079H7N61M/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=k68%2Brgb%2Bmechanical%2Bgaming%2Bkeyboard&qid=1569903197&s=gateway&sprefix=K68&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1

It's bigger cousin k55 seemed good too but I don't know much about the switches (cherry MX red/blue/brown/silent red??) , but had programmable keys on the left side that are unnecessary and add to width.

Logitech k810 (no number pad) also looked good but it appears to be discontinued and is not in stock on the Logitech website.

I'd like to spend less than $150 if possible (which is why I was asking about the cheaper keyboards) but I'm willing to spend more to be completely happy with it. That's why the Logitech w/mouse is #1 right now.
u/treefrog221 · 1 pointr/keyboards

Have you tried the Microsoft Sculpt ($60 - I feel I've seen it for a bit cheaper than this) ? It is very similar, but wireless with a split space bar and very shallow keys that are easy to press. My big issue with it was it seemed to flex a bit when I typed, especially when I pressed buttons high on the keyboard. However, I type fairly hard sometimes. They are often on display at large electronics stores, so you should try it before you consider it.

I also found this and this.

I would also recommend you look at r/ErgoMechKeyboards/.

If you have money to burn, I would consider looking into two-piece split keyboards like the Kinesis Feestyle2. I feel like those might allow a more natural wrist position.

u/Spearra · 1 pointr/keyboards

What I'm about to recommend is everything BUT being Tenkeyless. However it's case is still in slim territory so its your call if it is worth it or not.

The "Perixx PX-1900" is backlit, wired, utilizes scissor switches, and the overall profile is compact despite being a standard layout full sized keyboard.

Its build quality is severely underestimated. Despite going in knowing that those who bought it before me told me that it was great, I was still skeptical. They weren't joking around, it's build quality is intense!

Pro tip, if you put one of these on top of it, it will be even quieter! I recommend the clear version. It fits the Perixx PX-1900 pretty much perfectly as well.

Tenkeyless is usually mechanical keyboard territory and most rubber-dome membrane keyboards usually stick with regular full sized layouts. A tenkeyless membrane rubber-dome keyboard is quite the unicorn indeed.

u/kwaaaa · 1 pointr/keyboards

My buddy has this, which I've used a few times. From using a Filco blue switch keyboard the red switch is incredibly light to touch with a very responsive pick up. Do a lot of research into which kind of switch you want before you buy, trust me I've gone through 3 mechanical keyboards in the last 10 months to figure out which switch I liked most, because I didn't research before hand.

Just for the love of god, don't buy Razer D:!

u/ratsroloc · 1 pointr/keyboards

Honestly given the range of your budget it might be a better idea to save up a bit more for a Filco Majestouch TKL or a Leopold FC750R. Both boards seem to be really well received on this sub in terms of build quality, they aren't that much more than $100, and they come in a variety of switch types.

But if you're just looking for something as cheap as possible to replace your current board you might want to look into something like this. You could also look on /r/mechmarket to try to find a used Quickfire TK to replace the one you have.

u/unhingedracer · 1 pointr/keyboards

I mean, do you want a mechanical or membrane keyboard? I just bought a Razer Cynosa chroma RGB membrane keyboard for $64 dollars on Amazon. Right now it's $44.99. I love this keyboard, it serves me well and doesn't make much noise.

https://www.amazon.com/RAZER-CYNOSA-CHROMA-Spill-Resistant-Individually/dp/B075KMZ4MX/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1543222095&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=razer+cynosa+chroma&dpPl=1&dpID=41l-b-zrpOL&ref=plSrch

If you would like a mechanical keyboard with switches, my friend likes is a rosewill rgb k85 brown switch. I've personally never used one though. This one is about $53 but that may increase to $60 to include shipping

I bought a CM Storm Quickfire Rapid and love it. I find myself typing things for shits and giggles. It was pretty cheap on amazon, I think I paid $60ish dollars for it. It's build like a tank and you can pick whichever switches you like the most.

Absolutely. I'll add a few here:

u/Silchas_Ruine · 1 pointr/keyboards

I was going to get it for my mom, but apparently there are issues with the solder holding the mini usb. It's not very well done, and comes apart very easily according to the reviews. I'm probably going to go with this one . It's the cheapest one, it seems to be the best bang for buck.

u/rodriguezlrichard · 3 pointsr/keyboards

Mechanical Keyboards, I like CM and Ducky. Pop out the keys, vaccum/compressed air, boom.

Bigger initial investment but the QoL changes with a mechanical keyboard are huge, along with the simplicity of cleaning. I would say its easy, just time consuming to pop out all the keys.

u/OG_Clayster · 2 pointsr/keyboards

I have a redragon k552 red backlit keyboard with cherry mx blue equivalent switches, been using it for a year and it works great for me, if you don't mind the clickyness that is :) https://www.amazon.com/Redragon-K552-Mechanical-Keyboard-Equivalent/dp/B016MAK38U/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?keywords=redragon+keyboard+mechanical&qid=1564198860&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1

u/Kevinflo · 1 pointr/keyboards

First off try doing the o-ring modification with these. I found that it cut down on the sound of my mech keyboard and made the keyboard a bit nicer to type on.

If you really want to bail on mechanical though I use this for coding at work and I really like it for that. Otherwise I actually really like apple's usb keyboard with the numpad.

u/youngbull · 1 pointr/keyboards

I guess if you must have a non-mechanical keyboard you could go for the bland hp keyboard

If you want something even smaller have a look at the Microsoft Arc

In any case I would recommend you reconsider a mechanical keyboard. You can get a Filco Majestouch Minila for about 100$. More than double the price of the regular keyboards but it does have better longevity (not that it matters too much with a keyboard, they last almost forever anyways) and quality.

few questions:

1: what keyboard size (full, tenkeyless, other)

2: if it is mechanical can we raise the budget by 5-10 $?'

3: if it is mechanical is there a switch you preffer?( ask r/mechanical keyboards if you want a switch recomended to you)

The Corsair K65 LUX has RGB, the tkl design (aka doesn’t have a numpad), has volume and media controls, and USB passthrough. I can’t tell you much about it since I’ve never used it myself, but on Amazon it avg. about 4 stars. It’s going for about $120 on amazon. It also has Red switches, so you won’t get the click clack but you’ll get a linear, “fast” feeling If that’s within your budget, I think it should work for you since it seems to meet all of your requirements.

So I've been looking at this what do you think? This will be my first gaming keyboard so I'm not sure how good it is. Also i know there is a lot of differences between blue and brown switches. Obviously i'm trying to save a little money, is the brown switch worth the extra $15 dollars?

u/trompiston · 2 pointsr/keyboards

I found a similar keyboard on Amazon made by HP and I used that to base measurements off of. I do not know what you use your computer for but unfortunately most backlit keyboards are geared to gamers. I've never used any of these keyboards but they are from respected manufactures. If I were you I'd read through a couple reviews on each to get a better understanding of what to expect from the keyboard.

Cooler Master Storm Devastator w/ mouse $29.99

This one is .2" longer, .4" narrower, .4" taller than your current keyboard

Corsair Raptor k30 $39.99

This one is .9" longer, .9" wider, .4" taller.

If you were to up your budget $10.

SteelSeries Apex Raw $49.99

2.97" longer, 2.5" wider, 1.05" taller.

I have used this one and I can say that I didn't care for the keys but I do use a mechanical board so take that with a grain of salt.

If you were to up your budget $25-30. (At this point it might be better to start looking at low end mechanicals.)

Corsair Raptor k40 $59.99

1.8" longer, 2.5" wider, .8" taller

Logitech Illuminated Ultrathin $59.99

I don't think the dimensions for this one are right because Amazon says it's 3 inches tall but it's sold as an ultrathin keyboard?

Microsoft SideWinder x4 $68.80

2.1" longer, 2.4" wider, 1.4" taller

Corsair Vengeance K60 meets some of those specs and is listed there for $70 (with mail in rebate). Cherry Reds (quiet, linear feedback, light force required for press)

Cooler Master CM Storm Quickfire. About $65. Dirt simple, no special features. No numpad. Good build quality, excessive branding turns some people off. Cherry Blues. (clicky feel in a bump to the feedback as well as a audible click, medium force required for a press, absolute joy to type with)

Backlight mechanicals are out of your price range for the most part, unfortunately. You might want to look at the Razer Blackwidow but it has a pretty bad reputation around here, so make sure you research thoroughly before deciding.

You could try the CM Storm Quickfire TK. It fits all your requirements. I think.

I like the Qisan Magicforce as decent low-cost mechanical keyabord. The "60%" style version, (68 keys, no num-pad or separate F1-F12 row), which I am linking is exactly $60. If you want the larger full-size version, it's $70.

The EagleTech KG010 and the Redragon K552 KUMARA are both around $40 on Amazon and have many positive reviews, but I have no personal experience with them. All three of these keyboards use Cherry MX clone switches, so they have the same dimensions as Cherry MX switches, but the resistances of the keys are not exactly the same as official Cherry MX switches.

Amazon has this. Not sure about the quality though.

lack of a numpad really kills it for me, since I use them a lot for various games and as a way to quickly input numbers. I did see this, though, so I might splurge a little later on to get that version.
